This might be a rant, so I apologist up front but..........
When the dock costs 50 quid why does it only allow the video and audio to be outputted?
What I was hoping is that it could see the operating system and effectively act as a monitor and therefore a portable computer.

Maybe someone can write an app like they did for the DroidX that outputs everything you see on the screen.

This is what majority of owners want - to watch a movie on TV and play some music.
The ability to have desktop on TV is useless for them - you cannot touch TV screen to press a button anyway...
But you can touch the dell, therefore touch screen monitor not required.
I also have 3 devices for watching films on my tv (cable, ps3 and dvd player) why do I need another one. But if I could replace them with something better I would.
The present function is not better but in fact worse as I have remotes for my other players
Hdmi out for the full phone means you can browse the internet, check emails via the tv, this becomes a media center that could rival apples iTv. As you could watch hulu, most british tv, love film streams, amazon etc straight from the device. If it was done via wireless or then it would be a remote also, the perfect device.
Short sighted developers and a lack of understanding of what is possible is the only thing blocking it.

You don't have to convince me that it is nice use case.
I am only saying that from Dell point of view it is so rare, that it's not worth working on it. ROI is to low.
You may support my effort for porting Maemo/MeeGo to Streak, though.
Maemo/MeeGo offers everything you mentioned and more.
Ie. I already have a working setup with bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected to my Nokia N900, which is connected to TV for display.
it would be preferable if the screen stayed "on" the telly (or monitor?) for everything though - saves going back and forth between the two screens. Can understand why it's not a priority for Dell though, but I think they'd sell more docks if it DID do full output....i'd probably buy one then!
I presume it's not possible for someone to develop something?..............

Full HDMI support and BT Keyboard and Mouse! This combo will be the best! Just add a 42" flat tv and you've got a good everyday PC for multimedia, internet, email an so much more!
Has anyone tried to use tv out on the fascinate? Its the main reason I got the phone only to find out it may not have this function like the other galaxy s phones. Does anyone have a cord to try it with?

I would but damn, 50 bucks for the Micro USB to HDMI cable from samsung.
I'm more interested in the rca out from the headphone jack actually
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Tried earlier with a Zune video cable but no luck. May be the cable however, can't ring it out to confirm until Monday.
Any links to confirm pinout of the headphone connector on the Fascinate in the meantime?
I saw a video earlier today showing a prevew of the 3.5mm jack to rca on the international galaxy s, and it was enabled through settings > sound & display, but looking at my phone, I do not see tv out and sub menu that the person navigated in order to enable tv out.
Hmm.
sorry double post
I was looking for this function too and can confirm it is not listed under the settings. How likely is it that the hardware was changed to remove this feature?
It looks like there are still four contacts inside the 3.5mm jack on the phone. I'm hoping that means the hardware hasn't been changed and only the software so that someone can potentially get the tv out function working on the fascinate

I hope so, was really looking forward to playing NES/SNES via a bluetooth controller (Wii Remote, anyone?) on a TV from my Fascinate!
Itll work just swap the red n yellow cables

i ordered a 3.5mm jack to rca cable, will see if it works when it gets here.
It was tested on a captivate and worked, so we will see, it was cheap so no big deal.
All I have at my disposal right now is a 3.5mm Stereo Plug To Dual RCA Jack Adapter but all it has is red and white. Will testing that lead to anything while I wait for the other cable?
Plug the red where the yellow go n the white in its right place. Make sure you have tv out selected in settings first. It should show on your tv.

Some of you proabably already know this, but for those of you who don't, check this out. If you have a PS3, and it's connected to your home network, you can stream movies off your phone, through the PS, onto your TV, using the AllShare app. It's not the greatest quality, but certainly ups the wow factor of this phone when you demonstrate it for your friends. Also, if your TV is networked as well, you can use your phone as a remote to stream the movies on your computer to your TV, and these play in excellent quality.

Unless samsung removed that feature, it should be in. They claimed the galaxy S line did t.v. out. I know i tested on the vibrant and it worked for all but copy protected movies.

I think for whatever reason, some settings that come with other galaxy s phones, do not come with the fascinate. The obvious one is tv out, then I also read about being able to change the font to a few different preset options, but also cannot locate that feature. There are probably more left out features that I don't know about, due to never playing with any of the other galaxy s variants.

It is definetly not in the software options, however I would not be suprised if Samsung left it out (it is not on the Epic 4g either) until 2.2 so as to help promote the HDMI output option as well. (Why buy RCA for $10 when you can get HDMI for $50 mentality)
Just speculation on my part, I have no idea why the option does not appear. However I would really like to see someone compare the dumps from on of the other US models and compare to see if we can add it in

look in the sounds and display options. it's the last option in that menu on Vibrant.
As said previously the option is not there on the samsung fascinates menu.
I have the cable and it worked on my Captivate, but I dont have a Fascinate in front of me (yet). I would assume with no setting to turn on, you (we, since I have two on order) are out of luck. I know with my Captivates, it worked only when enabled. Mine should be here the 22nd and then I can check.

What do you use it for, has it replaced your netbook, do you use it With a dock or with the hdmi hack?
I use everyday, with lapdock and dock hd!
No I don't. I need my laptop, luckily it has clearwire LTE.
The hacked webtop is very cool, but not anything I need. I wish it could run google docs but it's too slow.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
pointless to me its way too slow and its missing way too many features to be used as a laptop
I've used it once or twice with the webtop hack and an HDMI monitor. But it hasnt replaced my laptop, nor do I see it doing so any time soon. Its a great idea but even with the full ubuntu feels rather crippled.
I use webtop dock occassionaly via HD multimedia dock. But mostly I use the wifi hotspot to give me internet access on my netbook.
i use it sometimes when i want to leave it on a hulu tv show, or youtube, or something...
I use webtop hack for hulu and streamings sites all the time. But I have $ 25 3mb/s internet service so I could "cut the cable" on cable tv and save money. I want full linux on webtop but waiting for an easier script hack hopefully.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
i use mines about every day. especially since the webtop hack came out.
I show people at work where the future is going. I don't actually use the webtop cos' I have a nice laptop!
I do however firmly believe that inside 5 years we will not be carting laptops around for work when travelling. A lot of hotel rooms have hi-def televisions already, and I think that inside 5 years we will be hauling a cellphone on trips along with a roll up bluetooth keyboard and wireless mini bluetooth mouse, using the televisions in hotel rooms as monitors while we work on Powerpoint, Excel, Word, and who knows what else. ****, there is even an AutoCAD application now.
So, in essence, I use webtop to show off and say "your iPhone can't do this"!
I've been playing with it using the hack to basically get full screen hdmi mirroring, but the refresh/redraw rate isn't good enough to pull it off.
I bought a$ 40 bluetooth keyboard and plug in my phone to my 52inch screen. Its great fun. Not so easy to navigate.

Never. I have a laptop and find it better than using my phone.
Dell Streak A/V dock...... Anyone have good/bad experiences? I have the opportunity to get one (in original Dell box), for $25.... I'm thinking that's a good deal for an original Dell dock (assuming it gives added functionality without any hassles).... Any thoughts? Thanks all
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
As a dock it's better then the slacker one in pretty much every way.
The HDMI out part is virtually useless though.
I managed to buy one for $20, i regret not buying more, for $25 it's definitely worth the money to buy at least one
Thanks Manll..... Does the HDMI out-port not work, or does it only work for the native video player (and not work when using, say "Rock Player", for example) ?
Thanks again for your input
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I dont believe hdmi video works at all anymore on 2.2 as the app that did video out wasnt ported when it went from 1.6 -> 2.2, or if it was i still dont know where it is, it's nowhere obvious.
the music app can do music (and only music with a black screen), but it hides all the music controls so you cant actually controll it with hdmi out, if you want to switch songs or something you have to turn hdmi off, switch the song, and turn hdmi out back on.
I dont believe that hdmi out from normal apps will work on the streak, but i havnt actually tried
Humm...... That sounds like Dell.... create an accessory for an all-but-unsupported device (our Streaks), then dont support the accessory... Typical! Now how will I watch porn on hotel's LCD while travelling? LOL
I think if I can get the price down to like $20 I may get it anyway to use as a charger / stand...
Thanks again
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
As a charger/stand it's great, much better then the slacker one,
you could always get live actors
Yeah, makes a lovely desk stand but I've never been able to make use of the HDMI output, not even back on 1.6
It is very well built & quality materials, just very expensive for a charger!
Hey Guys....
Thanks for the input. I got the price down to $20 so I bought it..... Even though I don't have a spare HDMI cable to test video output (it's buried inside the wall the TV is mounted on), I'm still happy with it because it's well made and has extra cables and another Dell Streak usb charger
Thanks again for your input.....

I recently have run into Droidmote. I have a good setup at home but wanted to use my Asus Transformer as the mouse and keyboard. Took me 2 weeks to really find something that worked. Not sure if anyone is interested but I thought this was a cool find. Definitely worth the $2. Just put this on your Motorola Photon (or other android device) I have been using it on my webtop for the passed 3 hours. pretty awesome

Also posted one of my worst videos of my life posted on youtube lol, due to me being too excited. This is also the same dock I purchased for $29.99 btw

I don't think I explained what exactly I was doing. Since I dont want 2 mice and 2 keyboards on my desk looking messy, I was looking for an app to use my Transformer as the mouse and keyboard to keep things clean. This is what I was looking for...
Nice setup! Im using my TF for something similar. Using Tablet Remote, I connect the TF to a projector and use my HTC Aria as a bluetooth mouse to change ppt slides (Polaris Office) for presentations. I love the questions afterwards about the setup. Always get the,"I didnt know Ipads could do all that!" My response," They can't, that's why I use an ANDROID!!!"
Back to your setup, I like that idea of using the tablet as your mouse and keyboard also. Very sound for hygeine freaks who dont like sharing keyboard & mouse with others!

I love my TF101, and I'm as far from an Apple fanboy as you can get, but unfortunately I have to correct some misinformation here. The iPad can control presentations as well. The CEO of my company has one and controls all his presentations with it. He makes a big deal of it too, and I'm always thinking "my Transformer does that as well, cost less, and isn't chained up in the walled garden of Apple."
Back on topic, this app is perfect for using as a BT keyboard and mouse. I'm planning on setting it up at home, so I can work without being restricted to my chair at my computer desk. It gets uncomfortable during long sessions.

I want correct you:
Tablet Remote not have mouse and not have a real gamepad only DroidMote have this futures.
ehh, TabletRemote does what I need it to do: Using my phone to control the TF via BT whilst presenting. Your right, it's just a touchpad not a mouse
Back to OP, can droidmote be used on TF to desktop w/o the need for a phone inbetween?
with droidmote you can remote control an android device (phone/tablet), a windows desktop or a linux desktop.
in all three situation with your phone you can simulate a real mouse, a real keyboard a real gamepad also with accelerometer functions.
all this input device are seen from the kernel as real devices.
DroidMote is a serious remote control not only because it was developed by me
wow! droidmote is soooo responsive! im loving it! its more responsive than my rocketfish bt keyboard and mouse. this is going to be awesome! im using the htc aria and the optic wheel works great over bt. only issue ive noticed is the voice commands dont register input. other than that, its great!

DroidMote is perfect for this really responsive and good lay out, but if your not rooted try Try Tablet Remote as a general android to android remote not got mouse control but has good interface and gamepad feature in the same style as Xperia Play. Tablet linked to TV via HDMI cable>>running tablet remote on both using gamepad to control a game on tablet and view on big screen ideal!
