Ok so further reading leads me to believe this is NOT for LEAK. Sorry for the Question. Just following links looking for some CURE for the 2.1 LEAK I landed here. In the QUest for searching endlessly for a cure, I got my hopes up. Keep up the Great Work. I will wait patiently, hoping someone will find a way to fix for use that Jumped on the LEAK too soon.
To date there is no root nor downgreade for those on the leak. We are working on it.
Besides the root and such, this will run as if i just bought the phone?

You could try FlashBack15 at the very bottom of the first post. This will unroot your phone. Then you could hope for the OTA upgrade and re-root (or is it just as easy to root from 1.5?).

The Eris Cupcake releases (1.5: 1.16.605.1 & 1.17.605.1) are susceptible to the "wag3slav3" symlink rooting exploit, so they can be rooted, for instance with the (Android Forums) "dummies" method. Jcase's "one click" rooting app for the Eris was built with Android 2.1 dependencies, so even though the rooting method works with 1.5, the rooting app does not).
I'm not sure why an MEID would ever needs to be "fixed", however. Smells kinda fishy to me.

I have an Eris running 2.1 OTA. I want to be able to overclock it, which obviously requires root, but I do not want to install a custom ROM. I want to continue running 2.1 OTA. Is this possible?
Based on what I've read, I figured it might be.
1) I thought I could follow the instructions in "I. Gaining root" at the Walkthrough thread on this site to root the phone. Simply rooting does not modify or wipe the 2.1 OTA ROM, correct? So I could be root but still running 2.1 OTA.
2) Flash the kernel-overclock-update-v3.zip found in the "Overclocking Patch and update.zip" thread on this site, which would modify the kernel so I can O/C.
3) Install and use setCPU.
Any reason this would not work or would be a bad idea? I'm generally computer savvy but have not rooted a phone before.
As mentioned above, I want to be running stock 2.1 OTA (or as close to it as possible, because I want the stability) simply with the ability to overclock.

Now someone here correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the way I understand the rooting process...
When you obtain root, you flash over your 2.1 OTA, and don't have that anymore. What you're flashing is a pre-rooted ROM with an old 2.1. You absolutely want to flash something else once you install the recovery image. If you want a ROM that's as close to stock OTA as possilble while still being able to overclock, I recommend this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=652044 (or, actually, this one is closer to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685581)
Also, ensure that you can root in the first place... check your HBOOT version.
If you were to only root, you'd no longer be running OTA, since the root is itself a leak.
jcase's Plain Jane is based on the OTA and is probably what you're looking for.
No, you cannot do that. Rooting isn't simply turning on a switch, it's replacing the entire ROM.

Ok, thanks for the information. I didn't realize that rooting itself replaced the stock ROM.
If you gave me your phone, I could root it and hand it back to you and with the "right" ROM, you'd be none the wiser.
Why are you afraid to use a custom ROM ? Ivan's, for example, is essentially a tweaked version of HTC/VZW's current Eris ROM.
I'm afraid to use a custom ROM because my instinct is that a custom ROM would be less stable than the default 2.1 OTA. This is my wife's phone, so stability is key.
But the ROMs that are essentially the same as the 2.1 OTA would presumably be essentially just as stable as the 2.1 OTA, so maybe I will give it a whirl.
so i just got a replcemnt htc eris and it came w/the 2.1 already on it...so is there a way for me to get a custom rom on it????and if so what do i have to do

You can't root because your phone has 2.1. Therefore you cannot use custom Rom or kernel. Sorry

Where have you been???? You can root 2.1 OTA, just not any of the leaks. The instructions are the same for 2.1 as for 1.5. Again, you can root 2.1 OTA just not the leaks.

Yes, the 2.1 OTA update is rootable. The 2.1 OTA update does not change the bootloader which allows for rooting.
However, those that got a refurbished device from Verizon with 2.1 may or may not be able to root. It has been said that some of the refurbished units have come back with the newer non-rootable bootloader.

I recently aquired the Vibrant and all I have to say is OMG this is a fnatastic phone. it blows my cliq, cliq xt, and g1 out of the water.
Anywho, the one question I have now that my phone is rooted and has the clockworkmod recovery is when the 2.2 update releases around september-ish, will this effect the phone being able to update like it did for the cliq, or will i be able to flash 2.2 from root and just lose root. i would be ok with it at that point because 2.2 takes care of all the issues that i have with 2.1 update1. the only reason i know this is because i have 2.2 on the g1 and its amazing. any thlughts on the matter?
once rooted on this phone, you have to wait for one of the devs to dump a 2.2 flashable rom to get the update. This is why I am gladly waiting to get the ota before considering rooting. I love the phone as it is.

yeah but I heard that if you just root only, you will be able to get the OTA update as you are still using the stock ROM. But if you are using a modified dev ROM, then yeah it will not auto update.
Can anyone confirm this?

Yes this is the case, if all you do is root the phone, you will still get Tmobile updates. You might lose root, but as was pointed out in a similar thread, Samsung doesn't seem to care about locking things up, so you should be able to root again easily.
ok so its more in line with what the g1 used to do if you didnt go onto a modified rom. with the cliq, even if you root and are on the stock rom, you still cant load the ota update because it fails when you try to load it once downloaded. i dont mind losing root once 2.2 comes out, i just want to make sure i can get it. i was thinking of going back to stock without root, but i'm having some trouble getting the phone in download mode

Alright chaps, I would appreciate your posting to this thread as soon as you hear about rooting after the update on the 27th.
I am stock all the way and wished I had rooted prior to update. Lesson learned.
I just want root on new stock update. Hopefully I'll have root soon.

vzwsupport says 2 weeks to a month to finish updates.
After the updates roll out, if I flashed an image of the full stock 2.1 would I still beable to download the update?
Or is there any hopes of somebody making a full image of the 2.2 stock?
I received my update Saturday morning at around 8:30 a. m.
I have never rooted, so the steps provided will work nonetheless. I can go back to 2.1 and then root to 2.2 rom. Is this correct, I am told on other forums this will not work.

Hey guys I've rooted a few phones for my friends since I rooted mines but that's when we were all running 2.2 froyo now I have a friend who wants me to root his phone too but he had the update 2.3 gb so can I still use unrevoked, the same method as froyo or do I have to wait for a different method for gb

As far as I know, there is no method available for rooting stock 2.3.
Got to wait. It will come.
Daaam, ok thanx I guess my buddy has to wait then, I told him to do it a few weeks back n he didn't want me to do it so now he'll have to wait...he should of done it when he had the chance
i thought i read a thread on here recently that said you could root by downgrading and then doing it. look around a lil n u will prob find it if u wanna try it out

You can only downgrade to 2.2 if you have s-off. The new 2.16 bootloader will not accept any known RUU, downgrade, or any other root method currently. I even tried to do the "old" GoldCard method, and of course, that didn't work either.

you can root it if your bootloader says s-off, just flash recovery in a pc36img file and flash superuser for 2.3

Well my friends phone has never been rooted so he wants to rooted so can I still go back to 2.2 using the methods y'all posted here
The new bootloader does not prevent recovery from launching. You can either turn off fastboot on settings-applications or instead of power off, choose reboot and start holding down vol-down when the screen goes black

If the phone has never been rooted before, then you are going to be S-on. Since you have the new bootloader, AND you have S-on, there is nothing you can do to root the phone at this time. You cannot downgrade to 2.2, you cannot downgrade the bootloader. The only thing you'll be able to do is wait until someone figures out how to get S off on the new bootloader, or if someone figures out a way to downgrade the bootloader. The only way you can downgrade back to 2.2, is if the bootloader is S off. Also, if the bootloader was S off, downgrading to froyo to 'reroot' is a complete waste of time. All you need to do is flash a PC36IMG of a recovery image, and then use that recovery to flash a new rom. That's it. Anything more than that is a total waste of time, and a bunch of steps that don't need to be taken.
So, unfortunately, all you can do is wait until someone figures out a way around the new bootloader.

Only option that I have found is to take it back to 2.2 and flash gingerbread rom, I personally only use z4root so ill have to wait

Yea man the phone has never been rooted, is for my buddy n I told him to come to my house to get it rooted before the update he was procrastinating n now he's stuck but thanx a lot for the info everybody

No need to be rude kid, I watched a buddy install a ruu that worked perfectly, took about 20 min he was back to 2.2, there is a few youtube vids on it, I didn't do the code for it but I did watch it work to my disbelief, I said the same thing you did that there was no way

Kid? I'm 41 years old. I wasn't being rude. The same question was asked several times, so I was just restating the obvious. My goal on here is not to be rude, unlike many others, but to actually help. And I am sorry if you perceived as such.
Also, sorry to burst your bubble, but there is NO way to root if you have 2.3 AND the new 2.16 bootloader. Either you have S=off and run an RUU to get back to Froyo, or you do not have the new 2.16 bootloader.
