Hi
Previously had all my contacts on the sim. Now that I have samsung galaxy s, and will probably stick with the same O.S. for the future, it would be nice to convert all my #s to google. Can't find any option on the phone to do this.
Thanks
Kiwi
Hi,
that is a good question..i searched for the same function but i did not find a proper option...i only managed to link my phone contacts with my facebook contacts, which is really cool
Thanks, if they are linked then where is the phone number stored, is it still only on the sim or does it go into the "facebook contact" which i imagine the facebook contact is stored on the phone.
I wish there was some sort of smart contacts manager application on the PC that you could merge sim <-> facebook <-> gmail contacts all into one set of gmail only contacts.
check this topic out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765081
it has several Contact managing tools i've been using to keep all my contacts in sync
I have yet to find an easier way
thanks to you.

Hi @ all
this is my first post here. Hooray!
I have recently purchased a Hero, so far everything is running nicely. I am using my old SIM-Card, on which all Phone Numbers are stored. The Numbers/Names are displayed and usable on the Hero as well as Google Mail Contacts (mostly email only), which I have edited online.
I am looking for a way to transfer/synchronize my SIM-numbers TO Google Mail, so I can merge Phone No. with the existing Contacts or at least use copy & paste to merge them. I simply do not want to type 200+ numbers into Google Mail Contacts manually. Google Mail synchronizes perfectly with the hero but not the "old" numbers from the SIM card.
Any ideas anyone?
Kind regards
Chris
Well, since there seems to be no other solution, I ended up installing the Nokia PC Suite, exporting my SIM-Contacts to Outlook Express, from there to GMail, sorting/merging them and then synchronization with the Hero. Long way round....but beats typing in a lot of Numbers.
C.
wow, that was unnecessary!
In the people application, press menu and then import.
select google from the list and it will import all your SIM contact into the google group that will then be synched to your Gmail and then you can edit them there.
that's what it is supposed to do....of course, if you weren't getting the google option, then it was not unnecessary and i just look like an idiot!!
Does any one have problem with sync contacts with gmail account?
I have contacts in my phone. How to synchronize them with gmail?
Mail is synchronizing ok, but contacts...
When i tryed new rom-s i must sync with my PC all time, but i want to back them in my phone from gmail. I's it possible?
TY
You first need to enable the contacts sync. -≥ Go to Settings - Data Synchronization - Google and put a checkmark on Contacts.
On your phone, if you go to contacts, you see on the right side of the contact's name the word phone(this means the contact is a phone contact) You have three types of contacts - phone, google and sim contacts. All of your contacts need to be google contacts, if you want to sync them with google. You can probably manually convert every single phone contact to google contact, but that would take a lot of time.
So to speed up things, you need to do this:
You need to transfer all your contacts to your computer, Outlook or such. Then delete all your contacts from the phone. From outlook you need to export all contacts to the .csv or .vcard file. Then go to Gmail and import all your contacts from .csv file. Connect your tattoo to the internet and again go to settings - data synchronization - Google, press menu and choose Sync now. It will then transfer all your contacts from gmail to your phone. Then all your contacts will become google contacts and you will be able to sync them with Gmail.
In the future, when you create a new contact on your phone, be sure to select google as type of the contact to be able to sync it with gmail.
But be very careful with this, make a backup of all your contacts before you do this.
Bye
My contact have letters: š, ć,.. and few more letters that show ? ? instead of š, ć when i'm export contacts from outlook.. I's there any other way to convert phone to google contacts? TY
I did a bit of research on this and there seems to be no other way to convert contacts from phone to google...i found this answer from htc on one of the forums:
HTC >>There is no default setting to always store a contact as google.
If you wish create a contact save it as google and create another one, if its set to google already then it does remember if not then you'll have to do this manually.
Unfortunately it is not possible to convert all contacts to google ones, it can only be done by re-adding each individual contact.

In phone or SIM?
Just make sure you enable the sync in Settings as noted above and enable background data; every contact should be then synced between server and phone (but I'm not sure about SIM contacts, probably not) when you go online with your phone.
Many of my contacts even have Serbian Cyrillic letters (абвгдђежзијклљ...) and everything works just fine, no matter if they were created in Google Contacts online (www.google.com/contacts) or in my phone.
However, I haven't try sync between phone and Outlook because I use Ubuntu and Google Contacts only
Dejan i have tried this...i created a phone contact and tried to sync it with google and it doesn't work for me....the contact needs to be a google contact. But for the ščćžđ letters, yes gmail supports them in contact names, sorry for misleading you.
I solve problem.
With program expcontacts export all people to sdcard in csv format.
Delete all contacts from phone.
Import csv file from sdcard to gmail contacts.
Sync contacts with gmail.
Great workaround Liderzre, skipping the whole outlook thing, for the people who don't use windows and outlook or for the people who don't want outlook to mess up letters čćžšđ in their contact names
Thanks for the great app. All in order now, but not syncing...oh well on to remedy another problem.

for some reason the app only add the contacts that i have on my Gmail account to the CSV file... anyone else having this problem?
update: ok i had to use another app but now my contacts are in my gmail account YAY the app name is UiA - Backup Contacts
I can not figure out how to just sync the 'My Contacts' group instead of ALL the gmail contacts. I have 3000 contacts and I don't want them all. I also can't figure out how to sync groups at all.
Anyone solve this problem yet?
the best I have seen is to check "only show contacts with phone numbers".
that's just not going to get it done....
I can't believe I am the only person who has this problem?
Nope, you're not the only one. I, too, have this issue and would love to get the original contacts app back (the one where I can select which group of contacts should be used from the list of contact groups defined on google)
I hate the new Contacts app..
I don't have a SGS, but if your rooted couldn't you remove the current contact.apk and grab the original one from a stock build an install it via ADB or such?
Just throwing out ideas to help.
You are not alone in missing this! I find this very annoying after creating a trim my contacts list in gmail and syncing that with the g1. Samsung better fix this oversight because I haaate scrolling through my hundreds of contacts!
Did you guys overlook, that you also cannot assign a ringtone to your contacts that were synced from G1 to Gmail to Vibrant? Cannot put your gmail contacts as groups. Also, the checkbock for send directly to voicemail is gone.
for now..
.. I installed aContacts from the market. It isn't great, but it makes life a bit easier.
Hi,
I'm a bit annoyed by the way the Galaxy S works with Contacts:
All contacts are synced to Gmail instead of My Contacts
Gmail Groups are not synced, all Gmail contacts are in one group
No easy way to convert phone contacts to Google contacts or to merge contacts into a google contact
Essentially, I want to use GMail exclusively to manage contacts and have all of them synced between GMail and the phone.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to achieve this, or maybe there is a better Contacts app out there?
This is not SGS issue, but the Android platform has been designed in the way that it's cloud computing centralised, in this case, Android phone is just the "client", you still need to maintain your contact in Gmail (web).
I tried delete a GMail contact in the phone, but that action will not delete the Gmail contact in Gmail server, sadly.
I've searched for solutions and found that the first two issues are solved on some phones, but that the Samsung Galaxy does not have the option to change the sync behaviour.
I want to maintain my contacts in GMail, but the problem is that the phone does not respect the GMail groups and it syncs "All contact", which means everyone I ever sent a mail. It should sync "My contacts", which only contains Contacts I created in GMail.
I hoped that there is maybe an alternative contacts app that does what I want.

I was also annoyed by that fact. But fortunately you can select to display only contacts with phone numbers associated in the contacts
application.
Just hit menu button while showing the list of contacts -> Display options -> only contacts with phones.
This at least solved my major issue with the google synching. Nice: typeahead in the gmail app still works for all people you ever sent a mail.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Try this , it did the trick for me

I have tried Contacts Evolved in the Market. It is a littly buggy, not even sure if it is actively supported. But it does display Gmail contact groups, segregated in tabs.
The actual syncing is still being done by the brain dead Samsung Contacts app, which cannot be uninstalled. It apparently does download the groups data element from Gmail contacts, but fails to do anything with it.
When I tried jp3 2.2 firmware the google groups showed, looks like it will be fixed in the 2.2 update.
Thanks for the answers. Displaying only contacts with phone numbers helps, and if the group thing is fixed in Froyo, thats alright for me.
Now I only need to convert my phone contacts to Google contacts, there should be an easy options like Phone to SIM and vice versa, but I could not find it. Looks like I may have to do it by hand.
This is like the only bad thing for me. Do more people confirm that it is fixed in Froyo?
How can I get contacts etc from Windows Live to Android? I have about 300 so typing them all in is really not an option.
use on market sim contact pro and you see sim and phone contact
I haven't got any contacts on SIM. Things might have changed but SIM contacts never used to support additional contact information so all contacts are in the phone memory.
Actually after starting this thread Outlook sync seems to have worked OK (without the problems of duplication I've had in the past) but it would be nice to transfer text message history to the Android handset.

This? You just gotta get your contacts imported in your Google account, and they will be synced to your phone automatically. If this guide isn't exactly what you need I'm sure a little googling will give you more than enough help.
