Epic as thick as the touch pro 2 ? - Epic 4G General

My touch pro 2 was a big phone but I love it is the epic as big or smaller in size

google touch pro 2 dimension and epic 4g dimension.

Im being lazy but my guesstimate is its the same or slightly smaller. Its almost the same width as the EVO and I'm pretty sure thats a slim phone.
Youtube is your friend, alot of reviews and they all cover the width

Evo: .5" thick
Epic: .56" thick
Touch Pro 2: .71" thick

Oh wow, much slimmer than tp2 I wonder if my leather case will be too big for it
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

Have both in hand
I know there are dimensions out there to exact-ify this; but, I'll give you my in hand opinion.
The Epic is somewhat flatter but also slightly wider and taller. The Epic is also lighter by what "feels" like 20-30 percent. All in all, bulk factor is greater with the touch pro 2. They are in the same class of big phones but the Epic is a slight improvement.
Seeing people with the latest larger phones to their head though, and the touch pro 2 doesn't seem as obtrusive.
If you're thinking of switching out, I think size is a non-issue.

case size
The Epic does *squeeze* into the TP2 case from T-Mobile. It seems too tight to be a viable option. It also doesn't fit in the G1 case that I occasionally use for the TP2.

[Poll] Evo 4g vs iPhone 4 screen?

I'm curious to as to what everyone's preference is, between the massive 4.3" screen of the evo, and wickedly high resolution screen on the iphone 4.
I'm an evo owner, but I've had the opportunity to use the iphone at length, and the screen amazes me. In terms of sharpness, clarity, and white point, the iphone clearly beats the evo. But there is also something to be said for sheer screen real estate.
Personally, I prefer the larger screen size to higher resolution, but what does everyone think?
This is not a debate of which operating system or which phone you would rather have over all, this Is just about the screen
I find the Evo screen plenty sharp and clear and the iPhone screen is just too small for me now so I don't care how sharp it is it's not for me
Granted I haven't had at length sessions with it, but I didn't find the iPhone 4's screen to be better looking than the Evo's. I didn't perform any tests or anything but I did play around with one for a while. I find the Evo's so clear it looks fake sometimes. I couldn't go back to a smaller screen.
The iPhone 4 screen is nice. No one can deny that, but I would prefer the Evo screen due to size. Even going back to my Nexus or Droid the screen now seems tiny, and there's no way I could go back to the screen on my iPhone 3G now.
I would like to have that resolution on a screen this size though.
I can't look at any screen less than 4 inches now.
The larger screen eeks out a win from me, but I do looooove the iPhone 4s screen.
I prefer a larger screen like the evo with the higher resolution of the Iphone.
Unfortunately it doesn't exist. I'll take the larger screen though.
After using my supersonic and hd2 I got use to the 4.3 and couldn't go back to any other device.every other phone I held felt awkward to look at the screen.

I was an iphone user since day one, I am a mac user, from mac pros at home to macbook pros and so on.
I love mac products but I am telling you, they need to let the phone business period.
They just released the igimp and it already behind times.
Steve, if you want my business back, get your product on a better network, and give me a 4.5" or better full face screen.
I finally got the chance to use an iPhone 4 in person yesterday because my cousin has one. The iPhone 4's screen is DEFINITELY much sharper and crisper. The only problem is that it's so small that when held at a normal length away from your face, you really can't tell. You have to be looking at it up close to really see any difference.
That being said, as much as I applaud apple for trying to improve their resolution, it doesn't help much that the screen is so tiny. I prefer the EVO's larger screen because it makes reading and seeing so much easier. Even my cousin admitted that the EVO is easier to read and that he wishes the iPhone 4 was bigger. Super screen resolution doesn't help too much if the screen is already so small to begin with.

Thank you for saying that. I went in a whole description in another thread about ppi to distance relationship. A good example. Most print media is at 300 ppi or more. Internet images are usually 72 ppi and look like crap printed out. Billboards which look great are printed at 25 dpi. Since you're viewing them from so far you can't tell.

Well, after doing some pen and paper math, I've figured out that if the Evo wanted to have a display of the same resolution as the iPhone 4 at approximately 329ppi, with a 4.3" size, we would be looking at a resolution of approximately 1216x730.
No doubt at all that would be one sick display, but considering the battery-draining iPhone 4 screen, and then making it roughly 70% larger surface area, and you can see where the problem would be. We'd have to come up with a 3500mAh battery just for it to be usable.
Iphone 4 display has is roughly 5.65 square inches, while the evo 4g's is about 8.15.

Sgs2 screen size vs the evo 3d

Ok i looked on youtube and the side by side if the SGS2 and the Sensation shows the SGS2 screen size is smaller.I have the EVO 3D now but maybe want to return it if the SGS2 comes out with the same size screen 4.3 but as said side by side they look smaller anyone have facts?
SGS2 screen is actually 4.27".
Yes i know it is 4.27 and when you put it next to the evo 3d or sensation you can see it pretty good it is smaller (( everyone has there thing about a phone some camera some speed with me it is the screen size.I like the size of my evo 3d i do not want to go smaller owell.
Sensation screen is slightly longer, but the SGS2 is slightly wider. Holding both of them together the difference is negligible and coming from the DHD which is bigger than both them, you struggle to notice the difference.
At the end of the day the SAMOLED+ shines through regardless of the .03 inches!
Regards.

I agree. I liked the DHD width, but I didn't like the Sensation's width. I prefer a wider keyboard than a more narrow one. That's just me. But hey, I'm sure there are a lot of people who would prefer it the other way around . When I held the DHD wow, the screen size was PERFECT for typing ^^ hehe. The best is the dell streak though for screen size haha.

Samsung 5.3" superphone (engadget)

Notables:
5.3" super AMOLED
1.4 ghz dual-core
2500 mAh battery
Stylus
1280x800 resolution!!!
Until a few days ago we'd heard surprisingly little about the Galaxy Note, a handset rumored to be launching alongside the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Wave 3 at IFA. It's ironic, really, because of all the phones to have kept a low profile, this is a memorable one. Behold, a 5.3-inch handset with a stowaway pen for note-taking, drawing and grabbing screen captures. In other words, a Dell Streak-esque hunk of a device that blurs the lines between phone and tablet. You're looking at a Gingerbread-running HSPA+ handset with a 1280 x 800 Super AMOLED display, dual 8MP and 2MP cameras, a removable 2,500mAh battery and the same Samsung-made dual-core 1.4GHz processor you'll find in the just-announced Galaxy Tab 7.7. For a phone this gargantuan, it's actually quite thin at light, at 9.65mm (0.38 inches) thick and a reasonable 178 grams (6.3 ounces). We had a few minutes to handle the phone in advance of today's press conference, and found it surprisingly easy to grip, even in our small hands. As with the Infuse 4G --whose own 4.5-inch screen once seemed impossibly sprawling -- the thin shape makes it tenable, as does the lightweight, textured plastic lining the back.
As you'd expect, Android 2.3 comes layered with TouchWiz on top and, in this case, seven home screens and a touch-optimized interface dubbed "S Pen" designed to take advantage of that pen. These include S Planner, a native calendar and to-do list app, from which you can drag and drop appointments, changing time slots without having to open an entry. S Memo for note-taking, meanwhile, accepts voice, photo, text and handwritten input. We also got a quick glimpse of Virtual Whiteboard, a more collaborative form of note-taking. On top of that, Samsung says it's releasing the S Pen SDK to third-party developers, and the company's banking on more apps for organizing photos and drawing, among other things. For now, this is merely a global launch: Samsung says it's still in discussions with carriers worldwide, so depending on your neck of the woods it might be awhile before you hear anything definitive about pricing or availability. Find the some fancy press shots (and a promo vid) after the break, and stay tuned for our hands-on.

This is great news. I like my streak but there are so many reasons to be excited for the samasung note. It trumps the dell in every way technically, definitely a superphone! Any info on release date or retail price? Hopefully, this is on T-Mob and there is a contract discount ^_^.
Could that be an optical scroll pad? That is unusual.
Nuthin' beats square inches.....
178 grams - pretty impressive.
Much uglier than the Streak, but if there
won't be any Opus One, I might go for it.
It also about the same thickness. I'm super stoked about the 1280x800 screen.

I will never go for another Dell Mobile. In my point of view, Samsung the best ever mobile industry with their frequently support and updates.
This looks amazing!!! defo my next phone after the streak, think I might start saving for it now :-D
I'm really interested. Honestly, I'm pretty much checked out of ever owning another Dell product in general. I haven't seen quality from them in awhile, whether that be support (in most cases) or the actual device.
I'm setting my sights on getting a Samsung phone of one flavor or another very soon.
what really bothers me is the lack of LED notification lights. it's the thing I hate most on the streak and I'd hate alot to buy another phone with this very stupid flaw. and sammy is well known for this particular stupidity...
The only down side is the old pentile technology being used for the screen. Its dimension should be similar to streak due to the narrower edge.

Oh look samsung can do 850/900/1900/2100 on a single device, that's EU+US models combined on the streak. Why is it so uncommon?
It's only 3.9mm wider too, so 5.3 vs 5.0 isnt THAT bad.
Previously i wasnt interested in it as 5.0 is already large but 3.9mm doesnt sound that bad.
Might be a good full stop streak replacement, keep in mind hardware wise it's prob pretty similar to it's SGSII cousins and rom support >might< not be such an uphill struggle like with s5
Though the other specs isnt a fair comparison as it's a full year older, excluding your preference for samoled/pentile issues it's pretty much a straight upgrade to s5 it seems. basically what we expect from opus one without having dell screw it up (does having another manufactor design/build/release your phone for your count? )
1280x800 on 5.3"? that by itself sounds crazy, that's 284dpi, even with the wonkiness of amoled -> pixel count that's a lot
New Samsung Fanboy!
Never really got into the Samsung gear, BUT THIS!
They answered our prayers!
OK, I do wish it was LCD instead of AMOLED so I don't have to use black themes to save battery and avoid burn-ins. That's prolly one of my biggest problem wth Samsung, their fixation with the AMOLED screens.
this is slightly interesting, but what lcd density will they have to run on this thing 140? oww my eyes...!
So it's actually SHORTER than the streak? I have been hoping to get as close to the 5" screen as I could, but I never dreamed of getting bigger!
HTC better hurry, or this will be my Christmas present to myself!
If they market this thing half as well as the Galaxy Tab, it will be very popular! Then hopefully heads will roll @ Dell, cuz they invented the thing...

Keep in mind the streak tapers off near the top and bottom, the new samsung doesnt, or rather it's less pronounced.
Think on the streak where it starts to curve and chop off that curving part at both ends and it's about the same size.
The important part is it's not massively wider, it's 0.3 inchs larger screen with only 0.15 inches wider. Unless you have very long fingers the streak is already hard to use one handed reaching for the far end.
4.5 is about as large as you can easily use one handed depending on the size of the bezel. The streak is by no means hard, it simply could be easier.
It's also strangely lighter, the streak is already deceptively light for it's weight (i dont know if it ACTUALLY is light for it's weight, but it feels plenty light) they coulda crammed in more battery and made it fatter, both phones are really thin for being so large
How about the 2500 mAh battery! That's bigger than the EXTENDED battery on my streak that makes it as thick as a brick!
The stylus seems a little goofy, but the the Streak is the first phone I've had in a long time that didn't have one. I wonder if that means that the screen will react to any touch?
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
I also like that it's defaulted to portrait unlike the Streak.
The nicest phone I've ever seen!

6" sounds about right, as long as they can minimize dimension increases by using a smaller bezel. In bed at night when reading ebooks or browsing the web, I hold the phone between my thumb and middle finger, pinching from top to bottom (large hands), and can barely do it with the Note, so don't want any larger height. Also, the weight's about at the limit for tiring my fingers over extended reading periods.
I'd be inclined for it to go somewhat smaller at 5"
and also change the res to 1280x720, cutting 10% off the width.
Are you guys crazy? Here's the size of an 5,7". It's looks so much bigger than 5,3! :0

Huge bezels on that e-reader make a big difference, but on second thought holding my fingers up to my screen making it 6 inches loss pretty big. I think 5.5" is more reasonably possible without increasing outside dimensions too much.
Yeah, ANYTHING bigger than 5'' is too big and will not fit in the pockets, it's pointless.
The BIGGEST size phone I'd buy is 5.5'' as something larger will not fit in my pockets & is therefore useless to me.
I like a device similar to the Note which is a balance between a smart phone & a tablet both in one.
It MUST fit in my pocket. The Note just about fits so people that are happy with a 6'' device will find it difficult fitting it in MOST of their clothes!
I think the Note is physically about as big as you can get before crossing into the Tablet space.
The niche of the Note is pockatable phone tablet.
The line is very narrow.
The Note is probably pushing the limits already. I bet the largest demographic for the Note is men... Because we're comfortable with the size. Most women wont be.

+ 1 It fits in my pocket, but it's tight, and difficult to get out if I'm not standing up. Just a hair smaller would help, but still bigger than the nexus.
I would go 5.5 inches at the most. I am pretty happy with the screen size. I'd love a 5.5 inch version, the same physical size but with smaller Bezels, mated to a quad core CPU, LTE, NFC, and a 4000mah battery. Also, a notification light would rock.

I agree - if it was exact 720p it would be narrower - the LG Nitro HD is only 68 mm wide, barely wider than the Atrix 2.
Anything 70 mm wide or less would be much easier to handle one-handed. The 83 mm width of my Note is quite daunting. I love everything else about it, or I would switch to the Nitro HD. If SG II HD LTE would only come with S-Pen, it would be my dream device ATM.
So screen size of 4.5" to 5", with 1280x720, would be the sweet spot for me!
I am used to the HTC 4.3 phone for about 2 years and switching to Galaxy Note is not problematic for me at all. I love the beautiful screen and the size is also an upgrade and moving toward a small Tablet territory. I like to read and watch video and also surf the net. This size appear quite good for those. I would not mind having a slightly bigger screen up to 6 inches as long as it as thin and remain fairly portable.
This Galaxy Note is so good that it is a mini version of the Tablet. It serves my needs for the time being and remain portable and still function as a phone - 2 very big pluses for this device. I can skip getting a tablet now.
I like big screen & i think this is the biggest it should be for note. If too big, it will be pain in the ass to carry every way..haha..

The Galaxy Note confirms it: people want larger screens

A good article.
http://mobile.osnews.com/story.php/25750/The_Galaxy_Note_confirms_it_people_want_larger_screens
It jokes about the "optimal" iphone 3.5 incher.
YES. People like Galaxy Note.
Sent from the galaxy far far away.
This is so true. At first i thought "damit is that thing big, i should bring it back to store" but when i put it in my pocket it fits and i can walk run and jump with the note in my pocket. So for me its the best phone ever until now iv'e ever had. I love the scree size, if i compare it to the holy iphone i have to laugh everytime about the size..... Its so cute this little iphone thing. I could give it to childrens who can play with it in a sandbox.
Exactly. Those "tech bloggers" should be making fun of people trying to use their "revolutionary" smartphone's functions on a tiny, heavy and fragile 3.5 incher instead...
I hardly ever played any games on my EVO but thats all I do on my Note!!
It simply kicks ass!! Fun times!!
All the reviewers are Jabronis.....perfect size the note is ....especially if you have big hands like me ....cant stand anything else will never go back.....
On-screen controls in games always felt wrong on those small 3.5" phones.. on the S2 they felt better.. on the note they make sense..
sure smaller is sometimes better.. but when packing all this power into a device biggish is good
5.3" aint that big either, just a tad bigger then my wallet but alot thinner.
i followed some links in that blogg and came onto another planet where i was told the android UI makes us need larger screens cos else we wouldn't see anything if android got higher res.. font-size? bigger icons? felt like easy fixes...
kinda feels like iphonE lovers just digs deeper and deeper into something to hold on to.. to make them feel "i did the right choice, my phone is the best"
sad truth is my sister loves the Note but felt she couldn't buy it cos its to big.. she would feel looked at and laughed at.. so she settled with the S2.
i often tell ppl if they are not into computers, etc when they ask if they should buy an iphone or Note to buy an iphone, the safe no-one will laugh at your choice and no-one will question why. its kinda like putting on pants, no one will ask you why.
sorry for the rant..

Agreed, but only if the kept the same form factor as they have now, but getting the screen bigger by stretching it all the way to the edges, in other words, almost no bezel.
i remember a point when I said 5" is the most any phone should go to. well, now I do believe the limit is 6" since anything bigger than that is a tablet fully at that point.
man i want a 6" phone or a SAMOLED+ HD tablet with telephony
I have to admit - i bought the Note without trying it first. When it arrived, i unboxed it and was terrified...
My first impression ? Oh my god, what have i done...but it took two days of using - and now i don't even notice the size. What's more - i don't really mind the size anymore, it feels normal, and is very useful.
iPhone's 3,5" was nice - 3-4 years ago. After that i moved to 4,3" HD7 and now to 5,3" Note. Bigger IS better here, especially with superior AMOLED screen.

This is more a rant than an article.
The note does not confirm that "people want larger screens". What it confirms is that some people want larger screens.
The claim that "Android phones go for the larger screen" is also not correct. There are many Android phone manufacturers and many models, of all shapes and sizes. Search using gsmarena finds 185 Android models with sceeen of size 3.2" or smaller.
I've got the largest hands in the whole town so the NOTE feels average to me.
Sometimes I even think, maybe this should be a little larger like 5.5inches. But now I've equipped the NOTE with the TPU case. Its quite protective, has a very grippy sides and it has a KICKSTAND!!!
But with the case on, I have some trouble slipping it into some pockets (jeans mainly).
So after pondering a bit, I think Samsung should make the NOTE with a kickstand, and shave off the bezel from the top and bottom portions.
OR
Make it smaller (from 147 x 83mm; 5.3inch) to 145mm x 79mm (shorter, little less wide, 5.1inch). It needs to shave off some of the bezel, for the premium aspects.
Though my biggest problems is that:
-Back and Menu buttons should be physical (its too damn easy to accidentally press them; frustrating when you accidentally exit an App and have to start from scratch)
-They should position the volume rocker on the right side and make it clickier (like the Nexus S)
-They should position the power button on the top and make it larger and clikier (like the Nexus S)
-Trade the position of Back and Menu button; and hitting the Menu button should bring the contexual menu's on the bottom and the search bar on the top.
If Samsung hired me for a prototype, my device would outsell any competitors!
I'm also for shaving off the Bezels but to have instead a larger screen by keeping the same overall size.

---What are your thoughts on the kickstand?
Should it be on the device, or on the case?
(If its on the case, it means you need to use a case, meaning the overall size is increased and its harder to draw/place into pockets.)
---What are your thoughts on the Navigational Buttons?
On-screen? all physical? all capacitive? or have the Home physical and the rest capacitive?

I think the idea of 6 inches with the same form factor is great all they would then need to do is increase the resolution as the pixel density will not compete with the likes of Sony Arc S or some of the other 4-4.5 HD screens.
If they did both of these and then made even better stylus apps and support. Then I think it would be game over even for some of the tablet market.
One a separate NOTE, does anyone know if the Note2 is confirmed?

I had a kickstand on my HD7. Thought it was nice - at first. Later on...i never even used it. Phone would just fall down, and it was impossible to use it with any cable connected ( earphones ) cause it would - again - fall.
I like the idea of a kickstand, but i think it might be a bit hard to make it stable enough on such a large phone.
