Suggest Mods! - Droid 2 General

Now that we have our recovery files and root would anyone have any mods to suggest? For one thing I would love to go to Android stock 2.2 and get rid of all the Motorola stuff. I would also love to snatch up the Samsung dialer app. Besides new mods does anyone know how to do this?
If you tried a new mod or have been able to get rid of blur please enlighten us.

If it's possible I'd like to at least go to the stock Android 2.2 theme because the Blur theme makes some apps display incorrectly that are expecting a stock theme:

Cyanogenmod or bust.

i too would love to get rid of MotoBlur and run stock 2.2 or a fast mod

Yeah, I'd just like to get a vanilla version built from source. Although I wouldnt mind being able to have a few of the moto tools already installed on the device.

I know we are somewhat limited by the bootloader, but I too would like to get back to stock android, I just don't care for the moto stuff at all.

I'd love to get rid of the moto crap... I'm new to the android scene and I feel like I bought a name brand PC loaded with ****. Can we revert to a stock android OS?

I for one would love to see MIUI portedto the Droid 2. Where's the Team-D2 MIUI???
Bump +1 on CyanogenMod too. I miss CM from my old D2 :'(

Wanting to buy a Vibrant. Have questions

Ok so I would like to get a vibrant soon but there are a few things that bother me that I would like to get resolved.
#1 how are the custom ROMS? Can i use Galaxy S and Captivate ROMS or is it specific to the vibrant only?
#2 I really dont like the UI they put on there. I like the stock android OR sense UI. I know sense will probably never make it to the vibrant but how about the stock android? Are there any ROMS right now that offer that? I know how to theme but that would be a lot of changing.
#3 development... I feel like since the Galaxy S will be across the world and many carriers development would be fairly good right? How is it now? What do you think it will be like in the future?
Hey NC!
#1 how are the custom ROMS? Can i use Galaxy S and Captivate ROMS or is it specific to the vibrant only?
There are no ROMs right now. CM6 has two developers working on porting to the Galaxy though.

Use ADW or LauncherPro (amazing on this phone)

It will eventually be very good. With the volume sold and ability of this phone, it will eventually have great development. Right now, a lot of developers, especially on here are used to HTC and getting used to Samsung and the differences.
You have to remember, This phone Just came out and the other 2 still haven't.
Plus, this is not an HTC phone.
That being said, development is going strong.
Expect the Flood gates to open soon.
FYI: I use both ADW launcher and Launcher Pro (bothe give me the the stock android experience you seek.
i think the custom roms will start flowing.
about touchwiz, I thought that would be the first thing i removed, but i have actually liked some things about it, but like has already been mentioned, use ADW or whatever launcher you prefer.
I think development witll really start to take off in time.
Thanks for the quick replies. Great answers
I use:
Touch Calendar
ADW launcher
aContacts
stock News & Weather
Klaxon
cubed.
That pretty much gets me around the Yucky TouchFlow. I also rooted and installed Root Explorer to get rid of the bloatware easily.
I was really hesitant, and except for having to tap ever so accurately when correcting text because there's no dpad (I've put a request in to a dev that I like for a soft dpad), I'm very happy.
If you get too much lag because of the slow storage memory, there's a hack for that. I haven't use it yet.
Just took a chance and bought it. Loving the phone but just as I expected, touchwiz is quite annoying. Cant wait to see a 2.2 cyannogen rom

[Q] Sense

Hey I was wondering if there was any way that someone could make a sense rom for the droid 2 and if it would even run on it. Also why wouldn't it work it is just additions to the system/app and system/framework.
Please explain what a locked bootloader restricts. I know it means that you can't use un-official kernels but does that mean you can't change it to sense?\
I would love to have the new sense from the desire HD for the droid 2.
****BUMP****
from what i understand the big thing holding back alot of the dev work for stuff like that on the droid2 is the motorola locked bootloader.... so far i've seen themes and the like with alot of the motoblur taken out/turned off but nothing beyond that (not even an aosp) but i know that its being worked on by some good people and I am holding my breath for the goods to start flowing for both the 2 and the X.... in fact i would really like to have it by the big tx bbq.... kinda soon but i can dream

i adapted somehow htc sense to our Milestone (Droid 1 EU edition) , it works, but lacks speed due to the limited 256MB RAM available, secondly no-one has written a driver that emulated the bcm4329 hardware, so making bluetooth working ok is another major "not working".. even on older htc phones they had problems.
anyways i can say its possible is i did the reverse and put MotoBlur on Milestone, it works but somehow also lacks 512MB RAM here too.
to end this quick note,
HTC sense is not just an addition to the framework, its a different releas of the framework, every vendor does this, so like EU motorola did many updates on the milestone, but only first found now in droidx,droid2...
and porting it is not so simple, but i would think its possible, but i guess its too early for droid2 to have anything running as no real recovery exists, which loads before any os.
the one you got has a live /system when you open recovery, which means you can easily mess up your phone when you start modding to use sense, and pretty much make it unbootable, so a new sbf needs installed, which again means alot of testing before you actually get it working, and then backup? another problem to work with when you make small changes..
its not easy task without a real unlocked boot or a good recovery solution..
ok so technically what would I have to do to put sense on the droid 2?

It will never work 100% of even close enough to have the phone fully functional. People have been trying since the Original Droid. It's also tied into the RIL of phone.
Out of the blue question
What about just theming the home screen menubars to get the sense menubars only? Is that possible?
that should be possible, as a few themes available right now have already altered those files with success. Now you just have to grab a Sense based ROM form a Droid 1 and start copying and modding image files mostly i think. to make a deodexed hybrid of Sense and MotoBlur.
Is is possible to just to have the speed-dialer/contact app working the D2(that is the only real thing I will miss if I go with the D2)?
I'd move to the D2 right away if you can get the HTC keyboard mixed with the multitouch keyboard of the D2, and then add contact app(and all that comes with it), and music app. That all I really like out of my Eris.
If the D1 was able to get a sense port(from what i have seen) how come we cant get it on the D2?

Makes logical sens thanks

[Q] Porting BlurHome2.apk from D3/Bionic/Razr

I for one like MotoBlur, it looks and feels great and is appealing and easy to use. I love the enhancements included in BlurHome2, and I'd love to see it on the Droid X.
Now, my Android "developing" hasn't gone farther than theming, so I don't even know where to start if I wanted to port this over.
My question is, is this even possible? If so, how would I go about doing so?
As far as I've heard (I'm no developer) this isn't feasible because of the elements of the blur framework that need to be in place...that also can't be ported without causing the phone not to boot.
This MAY have potential in 2nd-init, however?
I've no idea.

Well I've heard the same thing. I figured it'd be easier to do this on a Droid X (rather that a non-moto phone) due to Blur already being present. BlurHome2 depends on updated frameworks found in newer Droids, so when/if I get this started, I'll have to start porting the newer frameworks to the DX (which may not even be possible).
Only one way to try
It is possible (although 2nd init would have to be used), but would be very difficult as the code for Blur isn't open source.

You have to go to the droid x 605 update deodexed and apply the droid 3 theme then you put the lib files for BlurHome2.apk to /system/lib after that you change the permissions of them, then you put the BlurHome2.apk to /system/app/BlurHome2.apk and change the permissions to rw-r-r- and if you want you can put the new blurcamera into the system

Pure Android on S4

Hi everyone,
I just switched from an iPhone 4 to an S4 and so far the experience has been great, however, I wanted to know if there's a way to run 'Pure Android' on it.
From what I THINK I know, Samsung's version of android has a bunch of pre-installed crap. Call me crazy but this bothers me, I just want a clean OS, and that's something I liked about iOS. I don't know if it has any other limitations, I haven't gotten that far into it yet, except from the home dock being locked.
Anyway, I'm a complete Android noob, but I can follow clear instructions.
Is it even possible to do what I'm after? Is there a clean, safe and fast way of doing it for somebody like me that doesn't know much about these things?
Also, I don't have access to a PC as I am a mac user.

If you can't wait for the Galaxy S4 Google Edition , why don't you just buy LG Google Nexus 4 instead of Galaxy S4 before that ?

The S4 is still pretty new so development is still picking up, but AOSP roms are supposed to give you that pure android experience. Cyanogenmod (CM), AOKP and others add some great tweaks and settings for further customizations. You can check the Original Android Development for Cyanogenmod and AOKP, but I would suggest you wait a while as things are still being improved. They should get more stable soon and have clean and clear installation methods.
Android differs from iOS in that you get a lot of customization options. Different people have different choices and android can be adapted for anyone. Some like the pure android experience and go for either a Nexus phone, which is pure android, or install an AOSP rom on their non-nexus phone.
Some people like Samsung's Touchwiz while others do not. Other roms add even further customizations, etc. Welcome to android..!

Newbie LG G2 owner who wants rid of the stock Rom

Hello
I have been a Nokia user for as long as I remember but I've got bored of the whole windows thing so I recently brought an LG G2 in the United Kingdom which is unlocked and running the stock 4.2.
It has now got to a stage where its really laggy and unreliable. Browsing is becoming hit and miss and everything is grinding to a halt. This is one of the most powerful phones out there and it is on par with the N5 which is basically the same phone underneath so it must be the software. I've seen a friends nexus 4 which is on KitKat and runs beautifully and a lot faster than mine.
So I was wondering where do I start? I just want stock 4.4 and I don't want to wait till march. Double tap is required and that it. I just want bare bones android and I want it to run fast.
There are so many mods out there but which one is closest to the stock experience with double tap? What will I need?
Thank you for your help!
Jay
You want to rid yourself of the stock rom, yet you ask for a rom that's close to the stock rom...
Sounds more like you got something slowing your phone down. And also sounds like you're upset that nexus 4 has 4.4 and you don't want to be left out till March.
Maybe use the term" vanilla ore stock android"
LG G2

Hello
I was saying that I wanted the stock ROM as in pure android and not the bloated G2 software. There is a lot of stuff that I really don't need and I want something cleaner.
I'm not going to lie I am a little upset about the phone not having 4.4 and the modder within me wants to root it and get 4.4 on there. I know it can be done bit seeing as this is my first android (apart from a galaxy ace that I had and promptly returned a few years back) I don't know where to start or which mod to use.
Thank you
Jay
CM11 is your best bet for Android 4.4. There are all sorts of guides online to guide you through it.

I agree, the stock ROM is a heaping pile of dung visually, but it's not slow. Some reviews said they saw occasional stuttering, which let's face it, Android does sometimes, regardless of ROM. The OP as described sounds like the phone was under water with something. I have yet to see my G2 do anything close to that and I tend to overload my phones.
So, I'm not sure a custom ROM would fix the exact situation the OP was in. But we'll probably never know why it happened either, so... Perhaps the OP should try to disable all apps they can in Settings->All that they aren't using and see where it goes from there. If they want to dive deeper, root it, pm disable the others that are safe. Of course a custom ROM is IMO easier and a better deal in the end, but that's up to them.
Root it and go to play store search "Disable Bloatware - Hide Apps" to disable/hide system apps that eats your battery. Then install stockMod kernel to remove the lagness with faux. And install nova launcher with kitkat theme to change lg ui to vanilla like rom. Install greenify to disable app temporary. If you are more adventurous install custom roms.
You don't like your G2.
You don't want 4.2.2.
You strongly demand 4.4
You strongly want stock ROM as close as AOSP.
The best bet is
1. Call Google, demand them to release 4.4 source code.
2. Call LG, demand them to release their on-top 4.4 source code.
3. Build yourself a ROM that close to stock ROM and AOSP (duhhh)
4. Read more threads under Development sub-section.
