Vote for Android in Gizmodo's "iPad Vs Android Tablet" Poll! - EVO 4G General

When I first got my iPad, and I voiced my protests to my wife over the typical Apple OS, she said "You got an Apple when you wanted an Android."
That's still true. I would ditch the iPad in a heartbeat if there was a semi-comparable Android device to switch to.
Now Gizmodo is asking the question:
Would you choose an Android tablet—something like the rumored Samsung Galaxy Tab—or would you go with an Apple iPad instead?

Yeah, Engadget had an unboxing video kind of showing off how bad those are. I would not recommend them to anyone.

60% / 40% in favor of Android now. Just voted.
Also if you're actually looking to buy a tablet 'right now', then I wouldn't suggest most of those random ones made in China. I bought an aPad when it first came out, and I've picked up a few of those random ones off eBay, and they're all junk. I've immediately returned them all.
The only Android Tablet that I'll run right now is my Archos 7 Home Tablet. It's not exactly meant to be the fastest, but it's meant to be at home. I'm waiting on the Archos 8th gen tablets to come out, then I'll be picking up a 10" tablet.

I just can't wait for the Notion Ink Adam to launch. I probably won't be able to pick it up when it launches, but it will probably be on my list shortly thereafter. Looks great. So far, it sounds like they might have it in the States by Christmas. And for a current estimated range of $400 and $600 depending on the model. I'll pay the extra for for the Pixel Qi display.

How not to be a real reporter... Gizmodo Dell Streak 7 shaft review

http://gizmodo.com/5748201/10-ways-to-not-make-an-android-tablet
After reading this "article" i have lost all interest in Gizmodo for good. I take more care pooping in a toilet then this rush job they call reporting.
The device looks pretty good.. but not sure what value i could have with it when i have my Streak 5.
Who cares..I am coming from a 3GS and I got sick of this control freak whose name's Steve Jobs.
Apple products are very good, fast, polished and very pricey....it is going to take a while for the iPhone users to get their devices jailbroken and unlocked. It is all about rumors when it comes to that, and lots cat and mouse...Apple keeps releasing new updates and the hackers keep trying to jailbreak with no much success in the last few weeks.
I got tired of a very stable system which does not allow you to download any file unless you purchase a downloader and if you download with it you can't move the files around, they have to stay with such app,you can't install any non-crapple store apps.If you want an unlocked iPhone 4 you might want to sell your car too.
Once again the rumors regarding jailbreak/unlock.....you can see all this online too.
I would much rather have more control of my devices, that's why I pay for them.
Wow way to fuel the apple fanboy retards who are continuously lyeing to themselves everyday believing that just because something has an apple logo on it, its better.
I really dislike gizmodo.
Jobs could slap an apple logo onto a piece of sh$t and you know that they would all happily pay almost $800 for it.
The streak 7 is honestly a solid android tablet. It may not be the "best", but atleast its not another $150 big POS that you can buy at walgreens. Lol.
IMO dell gave it a good shot and they should be proud of have made.
Any publicity is good publicity right.

I agree - not a good thing. With a ton of tablets coming down the pike, as much as I like my 5" Streak, I can't imagine that the 7" Streak will be that compelling given that screen.
So, what's wrong with the article. I think it's spot-on.
I think the article was well written and bang on point. The Streak 7 was a lazy effort and barely worth releasing.
This has nothing to do with apple.
The Streak 7 is lazy. I would say his points are all well taken.
And the Galaxy Tab is nice. I enjoyed my experiences with it.

Hate on Apple all you want, I do and I've had Android devices since January 2008. Bottom line, the iPad is a far better functioning device than any Android tablet currently available. I really think that Honeycomb and the Motorola Xoom will shift things in Android's favour though

Agreed. I thought the article was thrown togiether in 5 minutes and the video was done in 30 seconds... I don't care if the device sucks... but if your supposed to be reporting on gadgets that will influence people.. you should take the time to go over the pros and cons...
and recommending the galaxy tab really put it over the top. Like you will ever see an update on that device now that the tab 2 has been announced. Most people won't get burned again by samsung after the galaxy s fiasco.

Exactly, the person who made the decision seems to be completely having no sense. Why would I buy a 7" tablet if it has the same resolution as 5" Streak,
which is more portable, and light weight. This product is like a formality for the
7" inch tablet. Dell should just keep 5" inch size, and cut another $50 to get more sales(with new CPU and 4G chip).

Read the rest of the thread or don't bother bro
The review you posted was for the 5" Streak, this thread is discussing the 7" Streak.
The problem with the Gizmodo review, is that its not an actual review. They're using a $450 tablet as canon fodder saying its **** n all, but its only selling for $450 (outright)!
If it was priced sans $750 (outright) onwards like the Xoom and LG tablets are going to be priced, then fine, rip its ass out and fcuk it over.
Dell made it cheap (mind you, its just the screen thats rubbish) and is selling it cheap. There are far worse tablets out there right now around the same price, but with half the goodies of the Streak 7 - So sue Dell if they went for the low end of the scale... Take it or leave it - thats the bottom line...
Ive found most websites for example gizmodo, T3, engadget etc favour Apple products, its something ive come to live with. Softpedia is pretty good.
And another thing, everyone always compares mobile devices to iphones/ipads. A friend recently posted on facebook about the motorola xoom and another person commented 'is it an ipad killer tho'. I was like, why would anything need to kill the ipad?

Hate on Apple all you want but the iPhone and iPad are both excellent devices.
They have, in the past, favoured Apple because most of their products until very recently have had far better out of the box functionality and let's face it, that's what the vast majority of users want. Until recent times of Froyo and Snapdragons I longed to have my phone be as responsive, and have as fast a browser as the iPhone. The Dream and the iPhone 3G came out around the same time in Aus. My Dream, although I loved Android, was amazingly slow next to the iPhone. Furthermore, reviewers are STILL comparing Android phones to the iPhone and even though it has far inferior hardware, it STILL stacks up. How do you think an out of the box Dream would compare to the Desire? If a reviewer compared the two you would say, "yes the Desire is better, but the Dream is older hardware with older software!" Both of these limitations apply equally to the iPhone, yet for many it was the yardstick for the Desire when it was released.
I've never owned an iPhone, only played with mates, and I've owned Android phones since the Dream. I personally think that the iOS user experience is too limiting for me, that's not to say it's bad. I know some people who have as HTC Desire and have never customised the home screens in any way.

This has been another edition of my $0.02
those websites are in the business of page views. And nothing gets page views like apple does.

And without owning any of them and using them for a good 2-3 months, how can you justify yourself?
I own both devices, and after the "honeymoon" period of about a month, they're now sitting in my cupboard and about to hit ebay...
I think if you've never owned an Apple product, but get to use a friends for a few minutes, you do love them. But day in, day out, using Apple devices just makes you dumb, and they get boring very quickly with so many restrictions. To keep it interesting you have to continue to buy more apps because the free ones are just rubbish, or worst case, jailbreak to get the features you really want. But, this is rutt that Apple wants you to get into. Get bored, spend more $$. The iPhone & iPad line is all about the revenue, not about the user experience.
To be honest, I've owned every version of the iPhone since its inception in 2007, and its been the same **** but in a different body since then. There have been no Major leaps in software or tech, and the iPhone has almost always been behind in core features (eg, camera, 3G, etc) when you look at their competitors (except maybe for capacitive screens).
I will admit, where Apple products shine is in the looks. Their devices are top notch build (except for the 3G and 3GS plastic case cracks and yellow LCD screens) - but they look very nice, and feel good in the hand.
Its just a pitty that the rest is just rubbish though.
I'm so thankful for Google and Android. Theres loads of choice. And now the Hardware war is about to begin - the first time Apple will be a spectator watching dual core handsets and brilliant tablets bring fluid gaming and a brilliant user experience to all of us.
Theres my $0.02.

So the iPad 2 is suppose to compete with XOOM?

From what I have gathered (sources below), the iPad 2 doesn't look to be that good of a match to the XOOM. Here are a few highlights, for those of you (like me) were curious about the competition and/or were looking for confidence in our purchase.
Screen:
XOOM: 10.1 inch, 1280x800 at 150-ppi (720p)
iPad 2: 9.7 inch, 1024x768 at 132-ppi (720p) Note: No retina-display
For 3G Version:
XOOM: Upgradable to 4G (LTE)
iPad 2: Stuck with 3G apparently
Front Camera:
XOOM: 2MP
iPad 2: VGA.. really??
That's just a few specs that caught my eye and made me smile. That's not to say the iPad 2 is a bad choice, hell at approx 8.8mm thin (33% thinner than iPad), to pack all that power into that is impressive to say the least.
While Apple is a solid performer, and their software "works", I'm an Android fan, and am thankful now that I joined the XOOM club. More customizations and such make the OS unique. Despite all the riff-raff going on about the Bugs, issues, and disappointments of the XOOM - most of these will be fixed or improved most likely over time through software updates (Like the OG Droid).
None-the-less, just some more info to keep on top of the recent market of technology.

Without the apps (which I'm now finally realizing is so important) the Xoom will never "beat" the iPad. I've noticed everywhere, in all the reviews, all the people, blah.. that everyone needs apps. Without these apps Android tablets will never be true competitors.

Yes, but as an early adopter thats to be expected. the iPad didn't launch with 65,000 apps, that was built up over the past year. Time will fix that. Just like Android took over the phone market, it will take over the tablet market. Strength in numbers.
Yeah, the iPad launched with 2000 not 6 like the Xoom.

Yeah but as I recall there were a lot of duplicates, and I really came to dislike the 2x iPhone apps - couldn't wait to get rid of. One thing that I keep coming back to - the big selling point for the iPad was it offered a "new user experience" and even tho I was a longtime Apple hater I ended up getting iPad and had to admit I liked the new experience although I don't like the iTunes tether and got tired of IOS limitations. But nevertheless 15 million people ended up buying into the "experience" and now, for XOOM or any other competitor to succeed they have to offer a better experience. Earlier Android tablets weren't able to but I think the XOOM will.... when it finally gets finished .... and some real apps. But with the I pad 2 released the media hype is focused on it so Google and Adobe better move fast!

I was an early adopter of the first ipad. And it was just as weak with apps. There were almost no quality apps out of those 2000. Atleast there are already a few sweet games that take advantage of the system and plenty more to come. Mix that with the vector graphics of a lot of android apps and it isn't too shabby at all. Atleast we don't have to deal with that "2x" crap with ios.

To be honest with you, the pressure implied by Apple on Samsung's Tabs are making a serious blow to their reputation. You know that it might not be true but in consumers' eyes no one would generally opt for a product which has patent issues regardless of how good it is.
The reason TF being such a success is because it's a fresh, innovative idea which emerged into the market out of the blue with a solid spec sheet and an extremely attractive price tag for the mass.
Another example which illustrates that people just aren't look for android tablets. Especially not in the price range they are selling for.

Pre or post fire sale? Just about any major Android tablet selling for $99 would get such response. Transformer, Galaxy Tab, Iconia, etc.
So that's not really a valid comparison (at least in my opinion).
Even though the TF is an entirely fresh new idea with a very solid spec sheet, it's not making such a big splash in the media world. Most people don't know about it. Google isn't paying attention to it. Google's star product is the galaxy tab for whatever reason.
It's kinda sad, really, that such a fine product as is the TF is not being noticed that much.

Actually, I have to ask: where are you getting the information that HP sold more TouchPads than Asus has Transformers? I'd say HP sold a few hundred thousand TouchPads (say, 100K - 300K, MAYBE as many as 500K, but that's being really generous). There was the perception of really high sales, sure, but that comes from the hype generated by one of the stupidest decisions in modern marketing history.
Looking at Asus' shipping numbers and given that the Transformer is pretty much selling every bit of inventory they ship, I'd say they've sold at least 1 million Transformers. At a profitable price, I might add.
There's no way HP has sold more TouchPads.
Seems high to me but according to this article 800 to 900K Touchpads sold sold far. Another 100K in process.

There are MANY budget android tablets for under $150... their sales are terrible. People simply don't want android tablets - I'm talking "everyday people", not geeks. The sales of ipads should clearly illustate this as Apple can sell more ipads in a day than Android tablet manufacturers can sell in a quarter.

Certainly, the iPad is a phenomenon. I don't consider it a case of a technology selling, but rather some kind of consumer cultural craze. The hype that Apple gets certainly helps, along with the constant meme that the iPad is the only device that's selling.
The latest Android numbers show about 2.5 million Honeycomb devices in service. This really isn't that bad when you consider how new Honeycomb is and how poorly priced the earliest Honeycomb tablets were. The Transformer was really the first device that was both compelling and priced correctly, and I think its sales show that.
If the tablet market is viable at all, I think we'll see Android tablets follow phones fairly quickly. If the tablet market is just a flash in the pan, then the iPad will eventually fall off as well. But it's still too early to make any sweeping generalizations about this market, and it drives me crazy when people do so. It's like they can't remember how Android was a minor player 18 months ago, and everyone was saying then about the iPhone what they're saying now about the iPad.

Not true. I believe hp said that app downloads have increased 5x since the firesale, but you have to keep in mind that there was a survey done which apparently showed that most people download and use a very minimal amount of apps on their tablets... It was a crazy low number as far as I was concerned, but apparently, many people are happy just using stock apps. My wife has an android phone and she sticks to almost all stock apps... N00b! LOL

I have to strongly disagree with this. Have you seen, held or tried out these 100$-150$ android tablets?
No one wants one of these because they are ****. Like, ****.
Most, if not all have resistive touch screen with no multi touch, on-board memory from 128-256mb ram to maybe 2 gigs for storage, support for wifi b/g, 7-9 inch screen with a 800×380 to 800x480 res. 400hhz cpu's, many dont come with a expandable sd/micro sd slot, 1100mah batteries etc. The list goes on. Not to mention almost all of the 100$ tablets comes with 1.6
No one wants these things cause they all have the same specs as my HTC touch. The quality is sub par. It has nothing to do with them having the android OS on it.
I love android. I love my tablet, I love my phone. I wouldn't spend 99$ for one of those POS. Even "everyday people" have that much "know"
You take our tablet or a Samsung 10.1 and slap a 99$ price tag on it, and watch em fly off the shelves.

Why do you think those numbers are unrealistic? Remember that they got those numbers from the fact that everywhere was sold out and we know how much stock people had. Where else would they be if they didn't get sold?
Also, the reason we're not seeing hundreds of thousands of app downloads is because people are waiting to port android over to the touchpad.

Yes, I've owned a few of them. Do you know what ereaders are good for, like the kindle? Reading books... that's pretty much all they do and they've sold WAY more than android tablets, often at a higher price. These $150 android devices do more than kindles, but people don't want them. They certainly perform better than the kindle, but Android hasn't taken off for them.
Perhaps it's all down to marketing? Who knows? But if Android tablet makers think they are going to sell Honeycomb tablets for $499+, they are completely out to lunch. When people are looking for a tablet, they say "I'm looking for an iPad" - that's a fact. Something has to change with the way Android tablets are promoted - maybe they need to hire apple guys?

Certainly, the iPad is a phenomenon. I don't consider it a case of a technology selling, but rather some kind of consumer cultural craze. The hype that Apple gets certainly helps, along with the constant meme that the iPad is the only device that's selling.

3 weeks ago, I was sitting on the train playing with my tablet when a man sat down next to me. He asked me if what I had was an ipad and I said no. Then he said, and I quote, "oh, you have an imitation".
First of all, I did not have my tablet inside a case or anything. I was playing galaxy on fire 2, and this thing looks nothing like an ipad or ipad 2.
But what really surprised me was how rude this gentleman was. He actually said I had an imitation.
With the billions of dollars apple is pumping into their ad campaign, people tend to only think the only "real" tablet is the ipad and ipad 2 and that everything else is a fake. And this atittude makes people so confident that this man actually said to a total stranger on the train "you have an imitation".

Frankly, I'm surprised people aren't paying more attention to the transformer. It really is a solid device. The design is superb, if you ask me. And compared to the transformer, other android tablets (with the exception of the galaxy tab) feel like anchors.
The transformer really should get more attention than what it's getting now.

1.2m Transformers sold, ICS

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20111031PD219.html
ICS coming to Transformer and Slider "early december". Asus have sold 1.2m Transformers since it launched in April, and are ontrack for 1.8m for the 3/4 of a year of 2011...
Not too shabby at all. Whilst all the media have been talking about Xoom and Tab, it seems consumers were actually buying Transformers....
well. Im one of those people. Jurt bought one and im very happy with. And was looking into xoom and tab.........but transformer caught my eye
Me too
I bought 2 of them. First one was a B80 and I really wanted to root it so I bought another one that is rootable. This one has the dock, which I bought with the first one. USB ports and another MicroSD slot. Gotta love all that extra space and I love extra options. Then, updated right away so the support is there. So I switch from my IPad 2 to my Transformer but only when the transformer is recharging. With the dock, I'm not on the I Pad very much at all any more. Can't wait for the Prime!!

Interesting. The numbers I read were 3.2 million total Honeycomb tablets. So Asus has over a 1/3 of the market? That makes the 3.2 number seem low. What about Zoom and Samsung? I wondering if the other 600k were going to be Prime's or if they plan on fire sale-ing the TF1 when the prime comes out. I've been shopping for sub $300 tablets for my wife. Current candidates are Fire, 80 G9, Ideatab A1. I would love to throw a Transformer into the mix (or give her mine and get a Prime ).
Why would anyone else wanna get the other tablets? Sounds like their companies don't give a crap about their customers.. hmm.

This, and of course the screen is excellent as well...
Apple spends about a quarter of a billion each year on advertisement and public relations. If a company like asus wants to catch up, they really ought to spend more on ads and PR.

I don't think ASUS has any desire to "catch up with" Apple, nor any delusions that they could. In fact, that's what's stupid about the whole thing: no company NEEDS to sell as many tablets (or any other product, really) as the iPad 2--they only need to sell however many is necessary to get a return on their investment.
ASUS is clearly happy with the number of Transformers sold, or else they wouldn't be making such a huge push with the Transformer Prime. As long as they sell enough to keep making them, I'm happy.

+1 on that.
Here in Holland I see Samsung doing a lot of ads.
Asus could sell more if the general public would be more aware of the Transformer.

Bought one Slider for me, here in Brazil, asus doesn't make advertisement at all and it was really hard to find the tablet... found more often only iPads, Galaxy tabs 10.1 and 7 and xoom. Some time ago I found Transformer but didn't find the Keyboard, only in sites like "mercado livre" (Works like ebay)...
It's annoying that they don't advertise.
I use mine often for work and when traveling, and tech illiterates ask "hey, is that an iPad?". I explain mine is ASUS and runs Android, and they always reply "never heard of it", and look at me like I'm crazy for buying it. Then they tell me they're probably going to buy an iPad 2 for $700, despite not knowing what it does, what the differences are between tablets, and completely oblivious to $400-$500 tablets that are newer, more powerful, and expandable.
Not to mention, once ICS hits and merges Android phone and tablet software, Android devices will outsell Apple by the millions and devs will focus a lot more energy on Android tablet apps.
I just bought one too
The new prime's design isn't really to my liking. The price for a transformer now doesn't hurt too, it has dropped to a reasonable level. You prolly need to give prime some time to sort out the initial issues.

A word to the wise, there are pros and cons with the "waiting" thing. Generally the new tech is jumped on right away by the geniuses that frequent here like hungry wolves. Once they crack and root a device, they move on to development. When the company patches the exploit, the intensity of finding a root solution precipitously dips and continues to do so with each iteration of hardware and software. (The companies fix the original exploit making it exponentially harder if not impossible to beat). If you are in the front door when the device hits, you will undoubtedly be able to root it, and it will stay that way for the life of the product. Just something to think about.
There are those of us who jump right in and get the latest tech and enjoy it and enjoy our lives immensely, and there are those of us who wait and wait and always do without on the chance that something better or cheaper will come out.
Those are the types that usually have nothing new and nothing to enjoy.
In my book your a long time dead so i am going to get whatever i can as soon as i can and have the pleasure of using it.
A friend of mine is earning over 40k a year yet always goes for a cheap option.
Now he's moaning that his tablet is not good for movies etc etc etc.
Should have stopped being such a tight arse and gone for the asus.

That's only the tip of the iceberg, they can only talk about their legal/moral advertising.
Both Microsoft and Apple spend many more times that on less ethical forms of marketing, like:
Employing "gamers" to stand outside stores in midnight launches to "buy" consoles and games..
Employing armies of viral marketeers to monitor forums and blogs and praise/defend their employers products.
Holding blogs and news sites to ransom for good press with their advertising budgets
Inviting blogs and news sites to lavish launch parties, all expenses paid trips to Redmond/Cupertino, Free Xboxes at E3, free Acer Ferrari Laptop with Vista..

Agreed, 100%. If I'm hit by a bus tomorrow, I don't want to think about all the things I never tried because I was waiting for something cheaper to come along.

haha, I just smile and say "no, you wouldn't have heard of it" and happily continue using it(and fire up wifikill app and block every apple device on the network for lulz)
Apple sheep... too many to deal with.
Love my Transformer; the dock makes it a sweet netbook, when I'm writing articles, too; If only Polaris had more word processor tools like spell check and word count, I would say it's perfect for my needs. As it stands though, I have VERY few complaints.

Guess what, our tablet was just nominated for the '17th Annual Global Mobile Awards'

Nominated for the best tablet category, along with Ipad 2, Kindle Fire, Transformer and Galaxy tab 10.1
Talk about a tough decision for the judges. All those tablets are awesome for different reasons.
what does this bring me .?????
Does this mean we all get to go on tv.. be famous .. Get unlimited money to go shopping.Does it mean acer will share the money and fame with us all..

I love my A500, but I always thought it to be as mediocre as mediocre can get. This surprises me.
I guess I really couldn't care less where this tablet lies versus others with any awards or recognition per se.
I didn't get as good a price as most did especially over the Black Friday period but when I bought it a month ago, I didn't feel the need to go any further with what else was available on the market as the return period approached.
Regardless of the price, it has performed flawlessly so far and I'm happy with its features. That's a winner in my books!

what's considered non-mediocre to you? Ipad2 is the #1 selling tablet, yet its specs still come up short when compared to A500 (namely 512MB ram vs 1GB ram). Acer A500 has all the capabilities/features that other top selling tablets have if not more.
The full size USB port was a huge plus for me. I store most of my movies on my external drive. It essentially made my tablet 532gb
I didn't see other tablets with such high reviews, moderate price, and sufficient features to sway me otherwise.

Is there a link to the list of contestants? I found their site globalmobileawards.com but I couldn't find a list of the tabs.
Huh? It's linked on their site (Cat 6d of the nominations)?! Or am I seeing a different site here in Germany than you are?

I already love my A500 but if it won that would just be one more thing to rub in iPoo users' faces. Not that I seek out debate but I wouldn't mind having that bit of info in my arsenal.
There are some people who just don't listen to specs and say, "Yeah but it's an iPad so it's gonna be the best." and a "useless" award that says it's the best is what shuts those simple folk up.
Iconia gets the European award as well... thumbs up !!!

Sneakers...I would rather have the award.. They also must come in Boxes...That looks like the reject pile... NO DEAL.
watch those awards.. Then look at the adds on the web sites owned and sponsored by the people giving out the awards.. you will then see who will win.. Its all about Money... MY GUESS IS ipad . Thou i would never own one.......
I don't understand why people think less of this tablet compared to other "mainstream" tablets.
It rocks, It's Capable, Great screen (although slightly washed out compared to some i've seen, esp the iPad), AND it has a USB port.
With that said, It's heavy, Kinda ugly, thick, the build quality could be better, and the camera sucks. But i'm not complaining since it was so cheap, I can buy a new one next year with the savings over a xoom or GalaxyTab.
The I pad has never and will never sell on specs alone. They sell image and the Apple ecosystem Discussing specs and Apple is like discussing the new Toyota Camry with a sports car fan. It goes 0-60 in 6.something seconds, but nobody cares because it's a Camry. That's leaving out the whole OS requirements discussion.
FYI, I had the Transformer Prime in mind when I think non-mediocre.
