Galaxy S i9000 in United States - Galaxy S I9000 General

I have a European version Galaxy S i9000 that I am using in the US on AT&T. I have flashed JM5 firmware and then HACKECLAIR. I have been noticing that I don't get very good 3G reception. Occasionally it will say '3G', but most of the time it switches between 'H' and 'E'. Is anyone else using a SGS on AT&T in the US seeing this? Is it possible to flash a better radio?
Thanks for any comments.

H is quicker than 3G, I think it stands for HSPDA

Listed slowest to fastest
E = EDGE
3G = 3G
H = HSPDA
so if you're mostly getting H you're not doing to badly.

isn't 3G "UMTS"?
and like enigmameusa said, it's HSDPA, not HSPDA

you can not flash better radio
SGS is hardware radio, not software
if you have a Euro/Asia version then you are running 900/1900/2100 for 3G and HSPDA
if you have the American / Canadian models then you have 850/1900/2100 for 3G and HSPDA

The AT&T 3G band is 850. European model does not have this band as mentioned.

AT&T also uses 1900 for 3G.
The OP is just in an area with more 850 and 1900 3G coverage. You would fare better selling the European one and picking up an unlocked Vibrant which is identical to your model from Canada or getting the Captivate from AT&T.

Beware the captivate has 3g upload speeds locked as in u will only get up to around 300 k upload speed

Great, so even 3G has different standards in different country?
Why is it so difficult to have a common standard around the globe? This is why we can't have nice things...

The standard is the same globally, it's the frequency in which it operates that veries. It's due to spectrum that may be used in Europe being used for other services here. It goes back to a time before there were mobile phones.
Even in the US, T-Mobile and AT&T operate at different frequencies for 3G.

The Vibrant is not identical to the Canadian one, I really wish Bell hadn't insisted on calling theirs the "Galaxy S Vibrant" as this creates unnecessary confusion as it is very different from the T-Mobile vibrant. The Canadian Model is essentially the Euro one but with 850/1900/2100 3g instead of 900/1900/2100. The T-Mobile Vibrant uses 1700/2100, has a different button configuration and lacks a front facing cam.
You would really be best buying a captivate from AT&T since you are with them lol, unless you really really want the Canadian design and front facing cam, in which cause you'd have to buy a Bell one and unlock it.

Galaxy S I9000 in CANADA with Rogers/Fido

Will Samsung Galaxy S work on 3G fido/Rogers
Hello,
I live in Toronto, Canada and I have phone with Fido. The 3G frequency for fido/rogers are 850/1900. I have found the phone on ebay unlocked that supports HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100.
I heard many posts here about that. I just want to confirm If rogers/fido support 850/1900, however the phone only supports HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100.
Will I still get 3G network or not?
No 850 MHZ available yet. You'd get 2g, but not 3g. I'm sure the 850 Mhz version will be popping up soon.
Yes, but The phone support 1900 and rogers list 1900 as one of the two band frequencies for 3G, so it's should get 3G using 1900 frequency in some areas, right?
Re: Will Samsung Galaxy S work on 3G fido/Rogers
It should work on the 1900 band. You just need to make sure that you have strong 1900 band coverage for 3g in your area. Check gsmworld. Com for the maps.
Sent from my Nexus One
1900 is the secondary band. you'll only get it in certain areas.
and by certain, i mean very few.
even then, would you want a phone that can't connect when you're in one part of town to another
Okay so I was just reading this older article on IntoMobile: http://www.intomobile.com/2009/02/24/att-3g-network-going-850mhz-nationwide-by-2010.html
Here is an excerpt:
The news that AT&T is aiming to complete their 3G network migration to the more capable 850Mhz GSM ban came straight from de la Vega, so it’s a fairly reliable goal-line to look towards. Unfortunately for folks with 2G-limited (EDGE) devices, AT&T’s decision to co-opt the higher-frequency band for 3G services will means that 2G services will now rely on the more finicky and shorter-range 1900Mhz band. In fact, you may have already started noticing a drop in 2G performance in your area. Still, the push to migrate 3G services to the 850Mhz band highlights AT&T’s ongoing effort to improve their 3G network.
So basically by getting a phone that works on the less reliable portion of at&ts network we are definitely asking for trouble. So as much as I hate hate hate waiting. I think that I will have to wait for an official us version.

Good call.
I think that if we don't get an 850 mhz US one right away they'll probably get one in australia or somewhere else where 850 is used. Same deal with people who want the HD2 on AT&T.

I can comment from personal experience here.. I'm going to hedge a bet that there will not be an 850Mhz Galaxy S... If there were going to be, it would have been submitted to FCC by now, but I could be wrong.
I bought an OmniaHD last June, which is also 900/1900/2100 and it's never hooked up to 3G in Canada.
I can scan UMTS (using service menus) but cannot connect. I always get an unauthorized access message.
The real issue is that Canadian Carriers are making THE CORRECT business decision by using UMTS on 850Mhz.
850 gives you a larger coverage area, with the trade off of less subscribers per radio. this fits Canada's geographic demographic to the tee.. vast area, not many people.
It could be argued that 1900 should be enabled in metro areas, but Rogers is reserving the 1900 for additional voice capacity (is what I've come to learn).
I guess 1900 would be enabled if 850 became flooded.. so here's to iPad causing conjestion on the 850... iPad being pure data.. Hopefully this will be the case and 1900 will be enabled.
FYI there is an approved 'Tmobile' version of the Galaxy S. Tmobile uses 1700/2100.. and so does WIND

From Engadget, you can click on the fcc image to get the the fcc application. This link: (rf exposure info)
fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=1263518&native_or_pdf=pdf
page 4 indicates that the application is for WCDMA 1900Mhz.. GSM will operate both 850 and 1900, however 3G is 1900. (also 2.4Ghz application for BT and WIFI..
So you're out of luck if your carrier has enabled 3G on 850 only....
Hope Rogers enables 1900, because I WANT THIS PHONE!
ps. Page 12 is neat-it looks like they radiate Brain and Muscle tissue equivalents to see the effects of rf The details on test configurations and results are there as well.. I wonder if they'll come out with a corded version....

Why is it that they're not using 900 instead of 850? How much of an "incorrect" business decision would that be?

@bigbuffalo, thanks for the tip about the guy in Markham, I met up with him yesterday and bought the Samsung Galaxy S. Man What a device!!! I replaced my Motorola Milestone as I had enough of the Motorola BS. Don't get me wrong, I still think its one of the best 2.1 devices in Canada but if you read the Motorola forums you can see what my frustrations have been all about.
I can confirm that the Galaxy S does indeed have 3G coverage all over the GTA (South Eastern Ontario, Canada) including Milton on the 1900 MHz band but if you drive 5 minutes west of Milton it goes down to EDGE. Oh forgot to mention that the 3G is 3.5G as I see an H (HSDPA, HSUPA) more often then I see 3G. I hope this helps.
The device is a work of art, smooth, thin, light, sexy and packs a punch. I would recommend this device to anyone over the Nexus One, Milestone and the Sony X10. The Samsung blows them out of the water in every way.
Also if anyone is interested here is the company I bought the Samsung Galaxy S from:
NCI Sales Support Team
Neway Communication International
newayci.com
1-888-839-5639
Now if I can only find some accessories..
Thanks again guys..

Glad you were able to get one. It is one superb piece of software. Not sure if your device has the Singtel firmware on it (Asia), but mine did and I found it to lag quite a bit. When I did my research, apparently that firmware really slows down the device. I since updated to JF2 firmware, and rooted, and now it runs fantastic. I would highly recommend to get rid of the Singtel firmware. Enjoy your device.

hmm...i'm pretty much sold on this phone. Just gonna wait until Tuesday to see what they officially unveil in terms of US carriers (AT&T in particular). The (possible) removal of the front facing camera on the Captivate really ticked me off..but apparently they added a 6 axis sensor for gaming etc. Hoping they root the Captivate soonish after launch in the event I opt to go that route and save some $$. Decisions...decisions.....
Any one use this phone in CANADA with Rogers / Fido...
i'm use with Rogers...some time show at 3G mode or HSPA mode...but seem this phone is not support Rogers 3G network...can someone explain it.......also when i use Fido i can in roaming mode...the date is not working until i check the roaming date box........

Bell's Vibrant is tri-band HSDPA!

Alright, I saw it on the box, so I can confirm with certainty: Bell's Vibrant is tri-band HSDPA 850/1900/2100. I think I'm gonna get me one right away. (Might it be smarter to wait for deals from FS?)
Before seeing it on the box, noone could confirm that: I had called Bell tech support (highest tier), Samsung Canada tech. support, noone! I just can't believe how incompetent these guys (and gals) can be! Samsung tech support didn't even know what HSDPA is! Go figure! Who pays these guys?
yes 3 band data as mentioned above
and quad band voice 850/900/1800/1900
who cares about the voice, the 850/1900/2100 range is what we wanted anyways
now i can go to Brazil visit my >beeep< or go to europe and still have good data reception (using local sim cards of course)

Yes, it's a full-on I9000 complete with FFC and physical Home button.
confused about Bell's Vibrant 2G and 3G networks
For reference the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S has:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1900 / 2100
What about Bell's Samsung GT-I9000M Galaxy S Vibrant? Which 2G Network? Which 3G Network?
I'm asking that because I'm confused:

Is it like AT&T's (and supposedly Rogers') Samsung i897 Captivate:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100
Does that means Bell's SGS has GSM quad band built-in? But Bell's network is CDMA, not GSM?!
It's a pretty big deal if it has 2G GSM network compatibility, because as you said that means it's possible to use it with both European and Canadian cell phone carriers (once unlocked).
The 3G 850 / 1900 is necessary for Canada, and 2100 for France but that's assuming you stay in big cities where 3G networks are deployed. But what about going to the countryside? In that case we need to rely on the GSM 2G networks to get voice and data connection, am I right?

The 3G 900 in the specs must be wrong. Only Australia, New Zealand and maybe Iran use that band (src). And Future Shop is a sub-division of Best Buy so maybe that why they both have the same error?

So 3G 850 and 1900 are enough to cover cities and countryside for voice+data in Canada? There is no CDMA technology in the Bell Vibrant?
And we have a good 3G coverage for worldwide use thanks to the popularity of the 2100MHz band.
Some part of the countryside in France (including where my family lives) doesn't have 3G coverage. So I would like to know the 2G Network capabilities of the Bell Vibrant.
if it has Quad-band GSM then its only difference with the I9000 is the 850 3G band instead of the 900 3G band?! and the difference with the Samsung i897 Captivate is the external design and the front camera?
After additional google-ing I found an official news from Samsung (June 30th) that says:
The first Samsung Galaxy S™ device to launch in Canada will be the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant™ and it is scheduled to launch this summer on Bell Mobility’s state-of-the-art HSPA+ network – the fastest and largest wireless high-speed network in Canada.
Canadian consumers can anticipate the release of additional Galaxy S™ smartphones throughout the rest of 2010.

So that means the Bell Vibrant doesn't relies on Bell's CDMA network, only on its HSPA+ network.
I see no point in waiting for Rogers to release the Captivate, unless we don't mind the lack of Front Facing Camera and prefer the other external design...
the Canada version of Vibrant operates at all those bands on both 2G and 3G also for Voice, so you got it all covered.
the only thing left is to get it unlocked after you buy it.
it is also compatible with the i9000 firmware upgrades without any changes

I'm from Spain (GSM) but I want a Fascinate (CDMA)

Please, I want a camera with LED flash! Is there any model like the Fascinate with GSM support?
Thanks a lot and, please, forgive my ignorance.
Sorry, I think you are screwed
There's a whole family of Galaxy S phones(the line that the Fascinate belongs to). Very few of them AREN'T GSM. I believe your best bet would probably be to get an I9000 Galaxy S(The international model). If the table of international GSM band listings I found is to be believed, this should be supported.

If you're just staying in Europe, you should just get a Galaxy S i9000. It's basically the same phone as the Vibrant with some minor differences.
Here are the differences:
Galaxy S i9000
+i9000 has a physical home button
+Has front facing Camera
-When traveling to the Americas, it's mostly Edge speeds since its 3g antenna doesn't support 850.
Galaxy S Vibrant (USA/T-Mobile)
-No physical home button
-No Front Facing Camera
+3g will work in the USA (AWS 1700/2100 T-Mobile), Canada (AWS 1700/2100 Wind Mobile), and Europe (any since the phone itself supports 1900/2100 for 3g)
-3g will not work in most countries in the Americas since the antenna doesn't support 850 for 3g.
There's also the Canadian Vibrant that's a Galaxy S i9000 but with an antenna that supports 850/1900/2100 for 3g, so it should give you the best 3g compatibility out of all the Galaxy S phones if that's what you are looking for.

USA AT&T Galaxy Tab questions answered here

I created this thread because there seems to be some confusion as to the differences between the T-Mobile, Euro, and (soon to arrive) AT&T branded versions of the Galaxy Tab. I'm sure at some point enough information will exist for a proper XDA wiki entry, but for now, we need a thread for each variant with specs, and where possible, hack/flash options, including phone and data connections.
So this will be the US AT&T thread, where we can get the facts straight for those who wish to use AT&T as their carrier with a Galaxy Tab.
THIS THREAD IS FOR US AT&T GSM ONLY, DISCUSSIONS ABOUT CDMA (SPRINT, VERIZON, ETC) SHOULD BE IN ANOTHER THREAD!
Other carrier-specific threads:
US Tmobile Galaxy Tab flashed to make phone calls (currently phone works only, no 3G data)
(I would suggest to moderators that other non-AT&T and CDMA-related posts be removed or moved to a more appropriate thread.)
Alright, for starters, let me post the US AT&T frequency information, so that n00bs can be up to speed.
850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
850 MHz UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA 3G
1900 MHz UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA 3G
This should be helpful when we discuss the Galaxy Tab specs. I will be re-editing this post as new information comes in.
[future verified information can be placed here]
[reserved for FAQ]
[reserved for links as needed]
Actually, the SGH-I987 version that AT&T is getting has already launched. In Canada. On two carriers.
The Bell version has two model numbers on the back, the GT-P1000M (firmware is different, and presumably less crippled than what AT&T will release, hello sideloading), and the FCC model number of SGH-I987 on the back cover, so the internals are identical to the AT&T unit.
And you missed a few bands, any Galaxy Tab with a SIM card will work on 2100 UMTS as well as 900 and 2100 GSM/GPRS/EDGE.
AT&T should be releasing their branded version of the Galaxy Tab on the 21st (just a few days from this posting). If I understand right (this is where the value of this thread will come into play), the specs for the T-Mobile version are different in terms of the 3G radio frequencies.
IF this is true, then it would mean that if you plan to use AT&T as your US carrier:
You must run an AT&T branded Galaxy Tab
You must run a Euro-spec Galaxy Tab*
*specific procedure for this to work is unverified at this time
Price
At this time, the price for an AT&T branded Galaxy Tab will be $650 from AT&T. It will have two pay as you go plans--$14.99 for 30 days and up to 250MB of storage or $25 for 30 days of up to 2GB. This is similar to how they currently handle the iPad plans.
HOWEVER, as many people here on XDA-devs know, it has always been possible to take a GSM SIM and move from phone to phone, and provided that the frequencies are compatible, the services should carry over and the device change remains largely in the control of the owner. Of course, they can detect the IMEI at the carrier, but in most cases they are not blocking IMEI's. If your device has the right radios and frequencies, it should work. In the past, this has been the case with most devices.
So the question is: Does the Euro-spec Galaxy Tab have the same frequencies as the AT&T branded Galaxy Tab? It should, considering that the specs for the Euro version seem to reflect the same frequencies that AT&T uses.
In theory, getting the software right on the Euro-spec Galaxy Tab should be a matter of flashing a working cooked ROM to enable phone and 3G connectivity.
As of the time of this post, one or two people have managed to get a Galaxy Tab phone service working with AT&T, although I am unsure about 3G.
Again, the purpose of this thread is to clear up these questions, and keep it focused on getting a fully-functional Galaxy Tab on the AT&T carrier. Meaning both phone and 3G working as normal with any other device.
I can confirm that the European Tab works fine on at&t with full 3G and Voice dialing.
It is model GT-P1000
FCC ID: A3LGTP1000
I have been using it for the past few weeks and it seems to support all the required frequencies. It has operated in every mode including (G)PRS, (E)DGE, (3G) and (H)SPA
Stupid question then. Doesn't Canadian Rogers use the same frequencies as AT&T?
They sell Galaxy Tab too right? Does their Galaxy Tab have voice call capability?
I am interested in buying Galaxy Tab that could do 3G on AT&T and can make voice calls so I could use it as my phone ;-)

No voice calling on any of the North American Tabs. The Rogers and Bell units are the same units AT&T will be getting next week.
Can someone post att apn settings

However, keep in mond, the EUR does NOT support the 850 3G band, only 1900.

Actually, the SGH-I987 version that AT&T is getting has already launched. In Canada. On two carriers.

Not to be mistaken with SGH-I897, which is an Eclair (Android 2.1) -based device as far as I can tell:

Interesting news... I bought an unlocked device in Kuwait City and it matches that FCC id number, but it had some Arabic apps loaded onto it, does this mean the euro and middle east versions are the same?
Also, how much of AT&T's network is is 850?? I didnt think the 3G would work back in the states... btw, my home is in the DC area is that helps.. Thanks!
the FCC says the GT-P1000 models support 850 3G

The FCC docs actually say that the GT-P1000L, N, T models do support 850GSM and 850WCDMA(3G):
Type the device's FCC ID info in, (A3L is the manufacturer code for Samsung). Look at the documents in the 824.20 (GSM "850") and 826.40 (WCDMA "850") lower frequency ranges.
The actual test report docs list GT-P1000L and GT-P1000N and a clarification doc from Samsung says the GT-P1000T model is just a renamed L one.
This is great, it's exactly why I wanted to start this thread. SO, one person at least has a Euro-spec (GT-P1000) machine wortking with voice and 3G data on a US AT&T network.
Someone needs to post specs on the GT-P1000. Because right now, it would seem that the P1000 is the best bet for those who want to use FULL functionality on a US AT&T network.
My personal motivation for this thread is to get solid information on what model Galaxy Tab will have full US AT&T functionality (voice and good 3G data connect), and HOW to achieve that (choosing the right Galaxy Tab and flashing the right ROM). Once this is nailed down, I'll buy one. I just need to know which to buy and what to do to it.

Not FULLY working on at&t's 3g network. The 850 band for 3g is still missing and 850 is their primary 3g band and it's slowly replacing the 1900 3g band. The reason they changed was because the 850 3g band can cut thru walls better and give you a better 3g signal. I remember when my area had only 1900. My 3g sucked. Very spotty unless I was outside. I instantly noticed when the 850 upgrade took place. Solid 3g even in the darkest areas of my basement @ work. There will be an unlocked 850/1900 3g band version on the tab but it looks like it was pushed off until early 2011. Probably because they knew they would never sell any of the current north american models with the 850/1900 3g bands (bell, rogers & at&t) For what it's worth, you can pre-order that version here:

Who said at&t's primary 3G is 850Mhz?
That is just false information.
Their primary is actually 1900Mhz and they are beefing it up with new 850Mhz towers, not instead of current 1900Mhz existing in infrastructure.
Places who only recently got 3G service might be on 850Mhz but all those who got 3G up until 2 years ago are all 1900Mhz with the addition of 850Mhz.

I need to find the artical that says they are slowly changing over the entire 3g network to the 850 band. Stay tuned.

Yea this article and all the others stating the same are copying the same wrong source.
At&t never said they will be replacing 1900mhz with 850mhz...they said they will be ADDING towers and expending their network on 850mhz.
Here in the sf bay area the netwrok is mainly 1900mhz but they are ADDING new 850mhz towers so now we get mixed frequencies in places where signal was bad. They are certainly not removing 1900mhz towers.

This thread encapsulates my concerns exactly. I want to use my tab as a phone, and am on ATT, so will wait to see how to best implement this agenda before purchasing anything. I have a couple of concerns:
1) I think that the Galaxy Tab forum should be split amongst various carriers, since future roms and such will likely be device specific.
2) Now that more information is coming out with regards to the Nexus s and Galaxy 2, I am wondering whether I should hold out. I do want a large screen, but the development community/google support for the next Nexus phone is hard to pass up... maybe I will buy both!
Regarding splitting up the forums, I don't think that's a good idea. We tried it for the Galaxy S models and it is something of a clusterfuck, and not as much knowledge is being shared IMHO.

[Q] MT4G on AT&T - anyone doing this??

Just curious if anyone is using the MT4G on AT&T and how well that's working? I know we can unlock it for use with any carrier but wanted some feedback before I spend the money to get my gf (now using iphone 3gs) an MT4G to use on AT&T.
I already know that 4G won't work. I got her a Captivate for Christmas but she really likes Sense and AT&T's phones are so locked down it's stupid. Can't use custom ringtones, can't sideload apps, etc.
Can anyone help out?
So I'm doing some research and it looks like there's minial wcdma overlap which means spotty 3g coverage? Is that right? I really don't know how to interpret what I'm seeing though so I would be really appreciative for the input of someone more informed than I.

Why not just grab her an att nexus one and flash sense into it? Evil D's ports are really good!

3G won't work either. My question is why on earth would you want to take a MT4G over to the [IMO] worst network of all time?
Only bands 1& 4 right?
Although the captivate supports 2100, at&t only operates 850 & 1900 in the us. Some phones have 2100 for global roaming because that's what most others use.
While at&t does have a larger footprint, I just paid them $180 to get out of my contract and I'm much happier with tmobile. Texts actually send and web pages actually load.

It works just fine, just slower, obviously.
And yes, it is 3G.
Let me be super clear about this... 3G WILL NOT WORK on AT&T. The MT4G just doesn't have the right radio. However, the Vibrant (surprisingly) does have the 850 band on its 3G radio, and does sort of work for AT&T.
If you want an Android phone on AT&T, I recommend buying something unlocked from Canada. Rogers and Bell both share AT&T's 3G bands (850 & 1900), and have a better selection than AT&T itself.
Really great comments here. She's got a year left on her contract, that's why. She's gonna find out her termination fee tomorrow cuz she loves my mt4g, lol.
I always knew that an N1 is definitely her best bet but can't find one used and have an mt4g in the works for $260.
We're talking slightly different things here as well. HSPDA on ATT won't work.
However, "EDGE" describes a family of service classes, not a single speed. Depending on your location and the service speeds there, EDGE may in fact be qualified to be called 3G according to the ITU (the international body that certifies this nomenclature).
As the radio in this phone most certainly does support EDGE, whether or not you can get 3G speeds on AT&T will depend on your location. For most of us this will still be a "no," but if the OP is in one of the special markets (LA, NYC, ATL) you can see it. Since OP is in Oakland, I figured he might get lucky.
I swap cards a bit on mine (one SIMM or work, and one for personal use) and have been in areas where the EDGE network was nearly as fast as the supposed 4G on the other card.
I should probably start using the that bandwith meter app and record my results. It could be interesting.

EDGE is not generally considered a 3G technology, although it is a significant improvement over GPRS, and it offers speeds approaching true 3G speeds.
Calling EDGE "3G" is somewhat like T-Mobile calling HSPA+ "4G"; it's playing a little fast and loose with the definitions. I do agree that in ideal circumstances, EDGE speeds can be pretty good, but it really falters when it comes to streaming media or any other data-intensive task.
Please post questions in Q&A section.
