This has nothing to do with the Samsung Vibrant. Maybe you oughta post on T-Mobile's forum or better yet give them a call
Can't you just turn roaming off??
If you are roaming a ton... isnt that their network issue? I dont understand....
If you primarily use your phone in a geographic area that T-Mobile does not have service they may cancel your service. T-Mobile does not pass along costs for roaming to the end user, but it does cost T-Mobile a ton for roaming. If you just travel through an area without coverage no big deal, but if the bulk of your usage is on a roaming partners network they reserve the right to cancel your service.

^ I did not know that, I think when you enable roaming under the options there is a warning about "you may" incur fees costing you a lot of money.... I guess "may" being the key word. Good to know, thanks.

This may also work to get out of a contract. If you happened to be moving to someplace without T-Mobile service you can call them and let them know. I KNOW my brother got out of a contract doing this.
I understand why they are doing it, but that does suck.
I'll just list it as just another reason why I can not wait until my contract ends. Alot of people complain about AT&T, but honestly their service was much better than t-mobiles.

So you have a Vibrant, but don't like the service.. last I checked the ETF for T-Mobile is $200 or less, and I would be shocked if you got a Vibrant for less than the ETF on your existing contract: priorities, service before the phone!

There should be no way to bypass this. T-Mobile specifically restricts roaming in areas where there is sufficient T-Mobile coverage. This is done with the whitelist stored on the SIM card. This can be updated by the carrier, but its not something joe 6-pack can do easily.
Just send your SIM card to the OP, and let him leave it in his phone for a month. Contract terminated!
In all seriousness, taking the Vibrant to AT&T is probably a good bet for the OP. Too bad AT&T doesn't discount out of contract phones like T-Mobile does, though.
Haha. Just send me your sim and I am sure I can get it terminated. I use around 4000 text a month and maybe 1200 minutes a month and 90% of that is roaming on att.

Did anyone elses internet stop working today? I have had mine working for a few months fow, and this morning, boom, no internet. It said I needed to upgrade my plan.
did it occur to you to contact T-Mobile about this? Surely they can fix this for you.
not if there is a way around this. I don’t want a price increase for the same service, the price increase is dumb, and why do I need to pay more for the same service that I would get with my WinMo phone. I don’t even have 3g in my area.
I have no clue what you are saying . Customer support is free as far as I know? I don't have T-Mobile (I'm not from the US), but even if it were a paying number for support, you can always walk into a t-mobile store and ask there to check your subscription.
No with the G1 t mobile made a new service plan just for that phone, It give you nothing extra but text messages, and with the use of email, text is useless. But by using APN wap.voicestream.com you at least were able to by pass the new service plan. Up until last night.
*sigh* why do people always have to reply to threads that they don't have any clue about?
To answer your question, yes my wap.voicestream.com just quit working this morning as well! I have tried everything to get it up and running again, but to no avail. I am located in central florida if that matters.
It looks like T-Mobile might be wising up to us using the $9.99 plan... which I refuse to pay anymore since I only get gprs data here!!!
Yeah I even pay the $20 data plan. If I got 3g I could understand paying more. Well not understand, but I would except it. But to pay more for not getting more if crap.

Why do people complain about services they don't pay for anyway, heh.
Sigh and moan all you want. If you want service, you'll have to pay for it . If it's still not fine, contact T-Mobile support. Nobody here is going to swing a magic wand around and give you free internet.
Your only partly paying for messaging, edge/3g/gprs, mostly what your paying for is server usage to sync with google servers. Don't like this feature? Don't buy the phone.
I love these arguments... do you really think that $24.99 is a fair price for gprs which is less than 50kbps whereas 3g is pushing up to 1mbps? I would gladly pay $24.99 for 3g or possibly even edge, but definitely not for gprs! Not to mention the issue that when I purchased this phone they told me that I am in an edge capable area which is a lie. The T-Mobile kiosk in the mall has an edge signal that extends about 2-3 miles in each direction around it, but that's the only edge around which makes it even more dishonest.
Yeah they lied to me, I was told my internet was grandfathered in at 19.99 and would never go up. So I am fighting this with t-mobile support now. I am not trying to get a freebie I just want the service that I am paying for, and for a little corporate responsibility. Plus I am not under contract so they can lose out on $5 a month or $130 a month. And I have already requested a unlock code.
Mine crapped out this morning. I got an email at 6:55am EST, and I went to check Wunderground at about 7:05, and it was dead. Changed all my APNs to see if that was the problem, and it was a no-go.
Interesting thing is... Yesterday, I was playing with my boss' developer phone that he just got, and I was able to browse the web for a good half hour using the epc.tmobile.com APN. (Using my SIM card, which has Blackberry data on it)

Whether I think it is a fair price for gprs is immaterial. If the T-Mobile network were predominately GPRS only there would be few people using T-Mobile's data services. As it stands there is almost nowhere in T-Mobile coverage area that is GPRS only. Generally the only time you would fall to GPRS is if you are on the edges of service and the signal is not strong enough for Edge. Edge is a software upgrade from GPRS so it is unlikely there are towers that are still GPRS only.
But all of this is immaterial. You were aware when you got the G1 that T-Mobile U.S. required a $24.99 data plan. You were not coerced into geting a G1. You chose to get a G1 with this knowledge and for a time bypassed the requirement by "tricking" T-Mobile. You were aware then and now that T-Mobile had a requirement for the $24.99 data plan and would do all within their power to get you on it. So you made your choice with foreknowledge of the cost. T-Mobile did not sneak this in the contract on you.

I find it extremely unlikely if you are in a populated area that the predominate signal is GPRS. Towers in a region are not mixed, if the mall tower has edge the tower you are using very likely has edge, just your signal is not strong enough. Talk to T-Mobile support and see if it may be a problem with your tower otherwise. I am visiting my family on a farm where there was no cell phone service till two years ago and I have EDGE here. For that matter I have been on-site to oil fields where the trucks were equipped with cell repeaters to have any signal at all and even there I had EDGE. So by Occam's razor it is more likely your specific location than something representative of T-Mobile service.
There is no discount for crappy cell coverage, the answer is to go with a carrier that covers where you are likely to be.

I don't think you read all of my post. I pay $20 for unlimited internet, not t-zones. The plan is still up for winmo phones. In fact I was told on the phone the only difference between the 2 plans is a different APN name.
I was always under the impression that plan was called T-Zones.
From your apn wap.voicestream.com was called T-Zones, if you hacked it
Besides did i miss somewhere, where you called T-Mobile and asked why your plan no longer works for the G1?
the t-zone play is 9.99, the unlimited internet is 19.99 they just use the same access server for connection. And the first post on this page said I want talking with tmo support.

Hi to all the Tmobile users out there. Anyone have the nexus one on Tmobile network WITHOUT data plan? As far as I know all you have to do is buy the unlock nexus one and pop in a sim card right? (does Tmobile have the same system as ATT that automatically force you into a data plan?)

AFAIK, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but you can pop a SIM-card with an "data-less" associated T-Mobile account and the phone will work. Data won't, and I don't believe T-Mobile will force you to buy a data plan.
Cheers,
Kermee
Never mind.. Not thinking correctly.
If you buy the phone unlocked, there's nothing to activate. You just pop in your sim and go.
I bought the unlocked Att nexus, and i'm using my old data plan without a problem (so far). I haven't been contacted or forced into a more expensive data plan or anything like that, though I guess your experience may vary.

I pop my sim card the first time and try syncing it on a SIM WITHOUT data plan, it connected to 3G and edge to retrieve email and stuffs then I disconnected the Edge and 3G right after. They didn't charge me for the amount of data usage because it was under 600KB. Hope this help

You may feel it's not right, but they do it. Many people trying to use t-mobile nexus ones on at&t got hit with the automatic data plan addition. It looks like most people with at&t ones are getting away without it so far, oddly enough, but that may change at some point in the future.

It will change when Google releases the IMEI's for those handsets.
T-Mobile doesn't force a data plan on a customer supplied handset. Only when you buy it under a new 2 year agreement.. that's what AT&T, Sprint and Verizon does.
Yup. They'll even send you a text to warn you!
Not for everybody but since I live in CA there's no way I would ever change from T-Mo. Great coverage with good options on pricing.
Option A) T-Mo --- $40/mo data only plan I can make VOIP calls with
Option B) Verizon/ATT's --- $70/mo ripoff with cell phone minutes I dont even use?
I'd much rather take option a and save $720 a month over a 24 month period thank you very much.
Verizon and ATT might be the only option for some people coverage wise but that doesnt change the fact that they are terrible companies that force their customers to buy extra plan packages they dont want just so they can steal an extra $30 a month from people instead of giving them options on what they want and dont want.
Give me choices and I'm a happy customer.

With AT&T I think you can get the data plan only (no minutes) for $5 extra on top of the data plan price. So $35/mo for unlimited data, no voice service. That's what I've been told, but you may wanna check for yourself.

I'm looking online but does anyone have this that can confirm?
I have an G2 from T-Mobile, and i love the phone.. But i'm paying 175$ a month for two lines. That's outrageous! I'd rather pay cancellation fees and get rid of T-Mobile for good! But i love this phone, a lot. I'm very used to it.
Are there any SIM only carriers in the US that will suppose unlimited android data? T-Mobile boasts that they have unlimited data, which is honestly a con, big time. Since after 5GB is used, they limit your data to EDGE bandwidth, which is useless!
Are there ANY honestly UNLIMITED data carriers out there anymore?! Please, advise me in any way possible, i'm losing my mind! ..and my paycheck. ):
I think only unlimited one is sprint but its cdma I believe.. they wont cap you after 5gb
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
AT&T is the only other of the "big 4" carriers that is GSM (Sprint and Verizon are CDMA). And AT&T does not have unlimited data plans anymore, and the G2 is not compatible with AT&T's 3G network anyway.
There might be some small regional carrier that has a better deal. But remember that the G2 only has 1700/2100 and 2100 MHz UMTS (3G) bands. If the regional carrier does not use those bands, 3G won't work.

is your mms on simple mobile fully functional?
Simplemobile is cheap and offers coverage from the same towers as T-mobile. They do offer an unlimited plan as well. You sign up with no credit check and they send you a SIM in the mail. Pretty solid and I'm surprised more people on XDA don't use them because this is a dream for someone who is frequently changing phones and doesn't wanna deal with bullsh*t carrier stuff. They're just the same as T-mobile without the big-company support lines, etc. and they don't deal with handsets, only SIM cards, so they're going to be cheaper.
You can also stay with T-mobile for a no contract plan. I'm on an "Even More+" plan. No contract, $59.99 a month 500 minutes, unlimited texts, "unlimited" 3g/(4g) data (aka 5gb then throttled). T-mo's no-contract plans are generally $20/month cheaper than the contract plans oddly enough. I believe the $69.99 plan is 1000 minutes, and theres an unlimited minutes tier at $79.99. From what I've heard theyre starting to phase out Even More+ plans because they like to have people in contracts and buy phones from them, and they really don't advertise them anymore, but when I went to my T-mobile store I specifically asked for it and they offered it no problem.

They probably offer SIM's to people with T-mobile frequency phones, and other SIM's to people with AT&T frequency phones, and simply provide service to the set of towers your phone works with.

I agree. You can't blame OP for wanting a cheaper offering to run his phone. OP isn't looking for cheats to lower his bill or anything, he just wants a cheaper option. This is the main reason why a lot of people leave Verizon and AT&T for Sprint and T-Mobile.
I use a local carrier called cincinatti bell. Of course I live in....cincinatti,ohio! But it is free longdistance and unlimited data (no cap) but the "4g" speeds top out at 2.7 Mb in my area... they do have other store around the country and they say they use both T-mobile and att for roaming..... not sure if this helps as my bill is about the same as yours for two phones (1 with data) but at least it is unlimited for real! And the service is good. No contract.

Turns out, one of you posters helped me out greatly by suggesting Simple Mobile. I checked their website, and i can get Unlimited Everything for 60$, and the SIM was only 12$. It's coming in the mail, and should arrive soon! I shall update later on about it's service. I'm not sure if it has truly unlimited data, so if anyone does know the answer to this question, that would be awesome! But if not, I'll just call customer service and ask them.
Oh, and another little tidbit; They support almost EVERY phone here in XDA! I looked a the list and it's HUGE. I highly recommend that all of you check this out. It looks like a great deal, and they cover everywhere that T-Mobile does, too! So, go check out the site!

'Tis true - I use them. The first line is $45 for unlimited minutes/text, up to 4 additional for $25 ea. You need to purchase data via fill cards (~$40/gig) but they don't expire.
Best part is, tmo phones work without SIM unlocking. I'm getting 4G on my Galaxy S 4G, and all I had to do was stick the SIM in.

Wow. Just... wow. Seriously?
ATT sent me the nasty-gram that I need to get a data plan for my tab. I just need it as my phone, texting and wifi at home and work. I think someone mentioned somewhere that this is what Rotohammer ended up with since att got after his tab usage.
If I keep using it as my phone,
A. Will they shut off my phone, data or both? One csr told me they would cancel my account, somehow I doubt that.
B. If they kill data only, will I still be able to text?
Thanks folks,

if that is the case well great, but how long would it be before they force us to change plans, how long before they notice that we are using our tabs as phones and force us to switch to a "data only plan"? they are already doing this to their own customers. these are the things i am worried about and the fact of possible higher plans for less. And did i mention the loss of tether? not that i use it but why would i be forced to pay for it if i ever wanted to use it when i didnt with tmo. there are just a lot of negative things, i do not see a single positive.

You are aware we'll just be grandfathered into our plans, right? Just like when anyone else makes a change to various services on their networks.

Good luck with that. I guess that you have never dealt with att&t. I have the uverse service with them and they continuously change my plan.
What I got today
So after losing my glasses and now I'm waiting a week for replacements, I can't see the darn Android phone so I decided I'd try one more time to get ATT to let me use my tab as my phone. I got a younger sales rep. She said the reason they are hunting us down is because we were on the iphone plan, even though I never had an iphone. I had the iphone plan back when I had my Australian HTC HD2. She changed me to the tethering plan, checked my account and says that it reads that I'm using the HTC Inspire 4G.
She said, swap it over and if they harrass you about it, which she doubted they would, then just switch back to the Inspire 4G. She said, they aren't searching by IMEI, just by that plan.
I switched back, I'll keep you updated.
Hey guys, I wanted to know if you think this will work with waiving a early termination fee on at&t. I read that if you use a lot of roaming which uses a competitive service to your carriers network, your carrier will contact you and let you know that it's recommended to switch carriers. First I would just try calling them up and tell them I moved to a rural area and the service sucks. Let me know if any of you guys have had any information on this.
Why don't you just try to find somebody to take over your account?

How does that work, like over Craigslist? Wouldn't they just run up the bill because your the billing account.
No, you actually transfer your account over to them. They will be the account holder and you will have nothing to do with it anymore. Do a search here on XDA about transferring accounts. I'm sorry I have no more info on it as I haven't personally done it.
It's called assumption of liability and it's done rather often. I see people transferring contracts here on xda every so often. The carrier doesn't care as long as they get paid.
Oh ok, now I see what you guys are talking about. I only have about a month and a half left now though. I'm trying to get the new Htc One XL or X on a prepaid MVNO to get off these annoying 2 year contracts.
I know they do it on Sprint. When you roam on Sprint, you are using Verizon's service. There is an app called Roam Control which allows you to force roaming. If you roam too much for a several months, Sprint will tell you to go to a different carrier and waive the ETF.

Oh ok; I'm assuming the major 4 carriers offer free roaming (until it's abused) when available in the US? I just paid the ETF for my at&t contract because it was not worth it to go from one representative to the next that would have a different story. One guy told me it's not at&t's problem for having no coverage in my area. The ETF was $66, so not bad.
