Galaxy S is the fastest texting phone! - Galaxy S I9000 General

A British woman is feeling "GR8" after smashing the world record for typing the fastest text message, a mobile phone company said.
Melissa Thompson, 27, wrote "the razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human", in 25.94 seconds.
The official Guinness World Record is currently held by American Franklin Page, 24, who wrote the same passage in 35.54 seconds in March this year.
Ms Thompson, from Salford, Greater Manchester, was using Samsung's new Galaxy S smartphone when she shaved a huge 9.6 seconds off Mr Page's record, also achieved on a Samsung device.
The record, which remains subject to Guinness approval, was smashed by Ms Thompson using the Galaxy S's "SWYPE" key pad, which enables users to input text without their fingertip leaving the screen.
The company said it allows people to send text messages at speeds that were never before possible.
Ms Thompson, who works for an insurance company, was shopping with her boyfriend, Chris Davies, 23, when they visited a Samsung roadshow and she was invited to have a go at breaking the record.
She said: "I used to send a lot of text messages - 40 or 50-a-day to Chris alone so we both knew I could type fast.
"But since we moved in together and I started my job I haven't been texting as much and, you could say, my fingers were out of shape.
"It's a real shock to find out that I'm the fastest texter in the world. But using SWYPE helped. Everyone should give it a go and see how easy it is."

I personally don't get why so many people like Swype. i find it a huge PITA, because I am constantly correcting it. It always guesses the wrong words.

Replace the phone. Swype works great.

I don't like Swype, I'm more of a Swiftkey person
I just don't like Swype!

+1 for me on Swype.
No matter how you look at it, this is good news!

I like Swiftkey, but I get many more errors than Swype. The reason, I think, is because it's constantly trying to guess what you want, rather than what you have, so you have to pay close attention (if you use auto-accept, and IMHO there is little reason to use swiftkey without prediction and auto-accept). Sometimes, however, I'm paying attention to what I've just typed, rather than what it's suggesting. Also, I've seen it have my word that I want, but I'm in the flow and 1 letter away so I type the last letter to hit space and see that it's changed it's prediction! That's the most annoying, but whatever. So, what I try to do is use Swiftkey for texts (because it does learn, and learn well), but for my general purposes it's still not upto snuff, so I use Swype.
I want to like Swiftkey, I really, really do. I love the idea of having a sentence of 10 words approx planned out, typing the first word and only having to type 1-3 more during that process, but it's just not there for me (yet...hopefully).

You can turn down the correction popup frequency in the swype options. I'm a fan, it works fast and if you get used to it the errors become less frequent. However, it makes reading your sent texts from the night before (yes the one where you got blackout drunk) more fun

I like Swype. Good thing of it is that you can "swype" to write and/or tap the keys to write normally. Sometimes it´s very funny how good the recognition is. You even haven´t to move you finger over the right letters to get the right a word recognized.

I like swype. You really need to know what exactly you want to write and how to swipe...

I think my problem might be that I use my phone mainly not for texting, but work email. As such I want to write my emails concisely, but with proper grammar and usually longer, more technical words. Swype is always dumbing everything down and assuming I am typing gibberish. I prefer the stock Samsung keyboard, I find it very responsive and it doesn't try to guess what I want to type - I can type fast enough as it is.

Well I had a dash and I kinda miss it. I could stream video from anywhere on skyfire so I could watch anime and shows. I could watch ANY video file on TCPMP, and had Mobile Office etc etc etc. Since there are a million WM phones the programs that were availible were enormous but Android is pickin up steam and many companies are plannin on using the OS which means more and more apps
Best thing you can do is go the link already posted and get some info

I'm, surprised he came from the dash and not the sidekick - if you ever want to fear for the future of our species, check out the danger forums. If you can find three posts on it that have complete sentences and/or all words spelled properly, you've count at least one of them twice. It's ridiculous.
Since I am not smart enough to make fun of his grammar, I'd like to address his problem. OP needs to realize that WM has been out for years (and hasn't changed much in that time, I've had an ipaq 1945, MDA, Dash, Tilt). G1 just got paid apps when, 6 months ago? When Android is around for a few more years, then no matter what you are looking for, there will be "an app for that".
I have also had a Dash in the past. It was a rock solid phone and I loved it. Give the Android OS more time to develop. WM has been around for many years.

2 things...first, you misspelled ****** (lol). Second, I moved over to the g1 after having a Dash. I loved my dash, took it on deployment with me, had it for almost 2 years, but after using the g1 I can safely say that I am not going back. Learning the G1 took next to no time, but just going back to the Dash for a little bit (my wife uses it now) it seems like there is a learning curve (and it was my primary phone for 2 years). I know the thoughts going through your head and the questions. I've been there. Ultimately the only thing that I can say is try it. That is exactly why there is the 2 week return policy. Play with the G1 and if you don't like it return it, get your money back and go back to your dash while you wait for the Dash 3G to come out.

Actually, there are a large number of mistakes in your "sentence." First, as pointed out, you spelled "******" wrong. Second, when referring to yourself, "I" is capitalized. The method in which you used "it's" would require the apostrophe. Third, "alot" isn't even a word. It is actually two words "a lot." I won't even begin to go into the grammatical errors in the use of "it's just I text a lot" as I don't think you would be capable of understanding that.
I'm not trying to be a jackass, but when someone resorts to name calling and rude comments because they cannot take a joke, it seems warranted to put the person in their place. What Luca_Dream posted was funny. Why can't you just accept it and say, in net-speak, "LOLZ, you're right. I'm just so used to texting!" In that way you would have shown maturity and good humor without getting the "smack-down" from the community.

Grow up and take your ignorant self back to the Danger forum. I used a Dash for two years and and used a Sidekick for a year and a half. Between texting friends, bright kite and twitter I rack up about 4000 text messages a month - so yes.. it is possible to "text alot" and still manage to put together a sentence with complete words, punctuation and at least 3rd grade level grammar.
At least PRETEND that you respect yourself and maybe others will return the sentiment.
Plus, I don't suck ass. I'll lick it every now and then though.
Just got pointed here as the post some were above was reported,
Lost for words but that could be due to the one of the follwing facts
1) I can't spell
2) Was not aware of nolageek habits or are they "work ethics"
3) Can hardly read as I seem to be laughing to much.
Think some of the above was handled rather nicely in a politicaly incorrect manor maybe.

Else lets get back on topic

Well it was fun while it lasted..

Have finally decided to go back to using my Storm 2, with all the great features the HD2 has, I just cannot get the hang of the damn keyboard..tried all third party ones, none were accurate for speedy one handed typing. The registry fixes seemed to work sometimes and not other times - It was driving me insane.
Typing something like..."ok mate, see you in a minute.." turned into a game of Buckaroo, or minesweep!
I will miss the great screen and super web browsing - not to mention great customisability features of the device
...but to be honest, come to think of it, thats all I will miss.
Great forum here
Really I can't understand the problem is in the device or person?
I'm replying this from my device only, typed one handed without issues and without any patch installed. It just need some time to get use to the new device.
I actually find it way easier to type in my HD2 comparing to my iPhone with t9 support.
There is some difficulty with high sensitivity, but its compensated with the t9 error correction.
Anyways, best of luck with your another device.

Stumbling along using T9 is hardly a good test of whether a keyboard is up to the task now is it? It's cheating.
The fact remains that typing on the HD2 keyboard - and I mean properly typing with no kids' correction services* - is pretty damned hard work. I have to correct almost every word and it is extremely tedious. The keyboard seems to have regular funny turns too where it becomes super-sensitive and where some of the keys, mainly backspace, adopt a mind of their own. Anyone who defends this keyboard, let alone says it's good, is surely having a laugh. I can manage it better than most, a few friends have had a go and it put them off the handset instantly. They had at first loved the screen but the keyboard soon had them turning their noses up.
*T9 and the like were invented to make multi-tap keypads more useable for the masses. I never used it then so with a full QWERTY at my disposal I'm certainly not interested. I'm a very fast typist and can bang-out whole words faster than people can using T9. I should not have to go hunting for new keyboards or using T9 workarounds on a premium device. It's just not on and I fully appreciate why the OP has ditched his handset.

A fact? Just like it's fact that ALL HD2's have hardware faults?
What you think is a fact is in fact not a fact at all but nonsense. It's one of the best software keyboards ever. Really better than the iPhone's that, if you belive the common opinion, was previously the best (I had an iPhone, I know the HD2 has a better keyboard).
Now don't tell me about threads where people complain bout the keyboard. I told you before why that would be stupid (though I'm sure you didn't get it...):

You'd also realize that this is a forum where people come when they try to get solutions - people who don't have problems usually don't tell everyone about it. Your conclusion that just because you have two faulty devices all must be faulty is total nonsense - almost all devices are perfectly fine and even more important, are of much higher quality than most other phones (*cough* iPhone *cough*)

Along comes one of those people who is 'surely having a laugh'.
I really cannot imagine a worse keyboard. I'm sorry but whatever you're comparing it to is not worthy of any accolades if the HD2 keyboard beats it into submission. You cannot seriously tell me that inputting text on this device is anything but a tedious and frustrating experience.
Again, you show that you're unable to read.
As I said (and you couldn't read) I compared to the iPhone I had (and the Touch HD). The HD2 has a much better keyboard.
If it's true that the iPhone had the best keyboard (that's what people say), then now the HD2 has the best one.
You draw the conclusion that just because YOU are not able to type on it, it's bad? You're much more of a stupid troll than I thought.

Actually only stupid people return their devices because of small, easily fixable software flaws... and if they're not only stupid but also trolls and/or psychologically disturbed, they open threads to tell everyone that they've returned their devices.

I have just reviewed your entire history of posts on this forum; I am surprised that you had nothing ever to say except to bash & complain about the HD2, enflame others with your sordid commentary, and trying ever so ardently to persuade others that this is the worse phone in history, despite that we all know the opposite!
I believe that you are deliberately trying your very hardest to ruin our experience with the HD2, actively creating and perpetuating mirages of exaggerated hardware faults, causing unrest among the forum members, and continuously complaining about everything in the HD2. This is not a casual accusation, this is the result of a comprehensive review of what goes back to your first post.
Unless you are being paid for this, just sell your phone and buy an iPhone, or, roll over and die! See who cares about your mobile phone satisfaction

You wanted people to read your complaints and spread FUD, that's all.
I'm on my second one, the first went back. Went back to my iphone. Keyboard on iphone is way more accurate. Hd2 need a major overhaul typing is very hard.
Typing on my touch hd was way better and t9 sucks. I'm giving this thing a couple more days but its not looking good.
Just so you all know in the last two years ive had and loved an x7500, a touch, a touch hd, then iphone (which i dislike very much) and now the hd2. This according to the specs was THE!!! phone i was waiting for. Software wise its just not close to the hardware spec. It needs a lot of work. especially for the price. We will see what the next few days bring.
yeah for the love of god I wish this guy would leave, its annoying to log on.and find every otherpost a bash on the HD2 by this guy... can't wait until he gets bored and moseys on!

Interesting response to the whole "omg sms bugz"

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9392#c1350
What proves that you lie? The next:
1) thread was created on June 28 and even was in search results 1 or 2 times for me or even on one tech website, but it is 6 MONTHS AGO, no EFFECT was then and during this period! FOLKS! 6MONTHS you keep your silence waiting? and now are yelling like sheeps?
2) all complaints appeared in OLD THREAD simultaneously on December 31, but you say that it was for a long time;
3) you name your devices every time without any detailes, the name of Device alone says nothing for bug fixing; this is ordered by your owner, TROLLS, to name all Android devices here to demonstrate the scale of your 'problem'; this addresses your claims to usual consumers, buyers, not to developers; you just need an attention of consumers, which buy devices, not developers who should find your INVENTED bug in REINVENTED thread;
4) you post here almost identical useless 3-4 words messages. DO YOU KNOW THAT THIS IS a developer's forum? detailes? logs? screens? descriptions? or you don't have a good another place from where you could scream?
5) you use the same words in all 3 places where ****storm should been created to make a feeling that these words are so obvious, but they are written down in your file on computer.
6) bugs are usually a result of updating or installing or some intrusions, you don't connect your complaints with any of your actions with Android OS or OS's changes on your devices.
7) nobody here don't try to really find a solution for 'his problem', because you just need a ****STORM, yelling, scandal; it says a lot about true your goals here;
8) those 2 resources from whose you came here are perfect for starting ****storms. theey are big and different to target different users- one is more glamorous and another one is more geeky;
9) you use term 'switch' and competitor's phones. Folks who experience a problem will not start their messages from the words 'I think about breaking my contract' or 'I'm switching'. You talk to customers/ buyers, saying this, NOT DEVELOPERS;
10) the idea for ****storm was found excellent, must agree: SMS is a basic feature as dropped calls during an important call, everyone sends millions of messages every day, half of them are so sexual and zesty that will cause firing and misunderstanding everywhere, even EMBARASSMENT!;
11) old retired idea about Google's privacy concerns is a very good sauce for such stories;
12) a slap into the face of openness- 'Look, Google, what we can do with your openness and your Open Handset Alliance!';
13) exactly before CES 2011;
14) tremendous growth of Android that needs ****storm to be able to compete better and to shine brighter;
15) just to create a proof for the words that you repeat on the internet as zombies about Android.
16) this thread was old,but once established and almost forgotten due to its uselessness, it just needed reinvention on December 31; this fact gave to this thread so bad-needed maturity to show that nothing is fixed from the 1st report; which also help push the theme 'Google doesn't care'.
17) if this bug was existing you wouldn't act as you act now

I don't agree with everything he says but the bolded are good points. [I don't think the guy speaks English]
Not saying that the issue shouldn't be resolved as fast as possible..
Just kinda funny that, as he points out, if it's such a "serious issue" why was it barely-if ever- talked about until RIGHT before CES?
Also kinda funny that every time this bug happens...the text is of a sensitive nature....
I call BS on that.
As I have said before, Engadget is a lot like "sexy action news" with their "the world is ending" article titles.
This issue, while it does need to be fixed, is not as serious nor is it as excessively occurring as claimed.
If so, then it would have been reported more often in the last six months than ONCE.

It's simple: A lot of people don't get to use the AOSP message app - how many stock Android phones are there? But if you go on AOSP ROM threads you'll get see SMS complaints pop up occasional. I guess it's a story because it still hasn't been fixed after all this time plus a HUGE stock phone just dropped - the Nexus S. Reviewers have taken notice.

The "claim" by Engadget is that it is an issue in coding of Android and "will occur no matter what SMS program is used" [which is complete and utter bull****]
It DOES need to be fixed but the timing and "end all" nature of Engadget article screams attention whoring.

That seems to implicate that it is not SMS app specific.
But as I said, others have read this and made the claim.
This has happened to me numerous times on stock, custom sense, and MIUI ROMs. I'll send a text to someone, and both they and a random person that was already in my texting list (someone that I have texted before) will get the text. It has happened on all 3 of my EVOs. Also, sometimes when I click on a thread it takes me to a completely different thread. I have almost sent a text to the wrong person because of this many times.
I think I understand this. It has something to do with the way Android handles the "back" hard/softkey function. It's missremembering which tile is where in the stack. It seems to happen when the "stack" or remembered tiles is too large. Try spamming the back button sometime. Occasionally it will do some interesting things.
Fix may be as simple as a small routine that scrubs whatever cache is responsible for this behavior.

So is the bug is that it merges your text with other threads and makes you send to wrong person right?

No, say you open up your message app and click on the thread you have going with John, it will instead open the thread you have with Jane. So if youre not paying attention youll text the wrong person.

Oh I sees..... I had a sms problem in my hero where i would click my wifes thread, then type, then realize it went to some one else and merged the whole thing together...
The reason it was doing it was... Sms email text alerts from my bank of america.. The @.... Email text
Only fix was factory reset...until the next message came in... I fixed it by turning the bank alerts off...

Not gonna lie, pretty hilarious things have happened to me because of this bug. I either send lots of awful text messages, or my phone is trying to mess with me.
One time I accidentally sent an old school friend a text meant for my girlfriend that was pretty mushy. Woke up to a text back going.. "..um wut".
The second time was more terrible; some less-than-politically correct stereotypes questions meant for a close friend that ended up sent to a (thankfully trustworthy but still awkward) co-worker. :B
I only noticed after sending the text (and sending it IN THE THREAD for the person it was meant for) and then being redirected back to my list of conversation threads only to find that the completely incorrect contact was now at the top of my list and was in fact the newly chosen recipient for my text message.

LOL @sexting.....
Is someone from Microsoft going to have to develop a SMS recall function? We all know how well it works in outlook.

Recent frustrations

I recently had some severe frustrations with my Iconia A500.
First, it got stuck at the boot screen screen. It would only ever say ANDROID. Why did it do this? No idea. I just rebooted it one day and it would not come back up. After weeks of just sitting there, I decided to find out if there was more than just power +vol to trick it into some sort of recovery mode. There is, and a factory reset eventually got it fully booting again.
Second, the OTA update was downloaded eight or more times with the result being a claim of sort of corruption of the update file. Liars, the file was ot corrupted. I had just finished setting up my tab again and it appeared that I was going to have to do a factory reset. Again. I love redoing Angry Birds and setting up everything else just the way I like it it. Even worse, I had no guarantees that a factory reset would allow the update to work. Well, I bit the bullet. Again. A factory reset worked.
Third, I went to type a URL in the bar and lo and behold! It is impossible! You can not type a full URL in to the URL bar. You are forced to search for everything now. Yo did not notice? Tell me where the colon is. The : symbol. Ys, it is there for all operations except one: typing in to the URL bar. For some reason, they specifically remove the colon from the keyboard when the URL is in focus.
I have an ipad2 but it angers me. I can not move the cursor to the middle of any series of letters. This means that a single typo requires retyping the entire sequence of letters and symbols again. It can not be edited. I also do not like having to constantly fight to keep the hardware under my control. Why is Android moving in this direction? My boot loader is locked on my A500. They are taking away my ability to ...
Meh. Never mind. I am withdrawing from this garbage. It is like ingesting strychnine. Anyone want to buy a worthless A500 or garbage iPad 2? Both are in very good condition but neither are usable to me.
Well, first, you don't need to be typing the "http://" part of url's these days, y'know? just got from the www part (and even that is often spurious). Otherwise, perhaps it's the keyboard you're using? I have no problems typing a colon from the Thumb keyboard...
As for the bootloop, did you mod the tablet in anyway at all? That'd do it.
The download corruptions is known about and again, is usually down to people having done things to their tabs, but not always. I think the distribution servers Acer use are garbage...
Oh, and I'll give you $50 for your iPad2.
Since FloatingFatMan is taking your iPad I guess I'll have to settle for another Acer.
I'll give you 50$ for it since it's in the same price range and I wouldn't want to outbid FloatingFatMan.
Edit: I forgot to add.... We'll cover the postage so that you won't have any more expenses.

That is... an ODD thing to complain about. Can't you just type "www.whateveryouwant.com" instead of "http://www.whateveryouwant.com"? Is there some specific reason why you need to type "http://" at the beginning?
Besides, I personally love the fact that I can just type part of what I want and it shows me the most relevant guesses, it really speeds things up. But well, I guess each to their own..

Indeed, that I can understand, but for most cases one shouldn't need it.
Strange! Didn't notice the : thing...
Wait... Tried it out... My colon is just fine! Did you try a different keyboard?
Sorry, but when I see a rant like this, I have to ask myself:
Didn't mommy hold you enough when you were a baby?
Think outside the box
The only reason I could ever see needing the : key when manually browsing to a url is in the example you save, wanting to hit the https and not the http - use any type of basic notepad software (I use Gtasks personally), type the full URL in there, copy, paste into browser - set bookmark so you never have to do it again.
Or snag the "Hackers Keyboard" from the market: much more like a traditional keyboard complete with arrow keys (which i find usefull when posting here and not connected to my external keyboard) and you don't have to worry about vanishing keys depending on where you clicked.
As for your locked bootloader issue: we have figured that out a long time ago - clockwork mod is up and running great.
The thing I have discovered about tablets - you have to be willing to not get frustrated and put some work into it if the stock functionality is not enough for you.
Otherwise, I'll buy your a500 for $100, could use a second to trick out and give to the girlfriend as a gift
+1 for Hackers Keyboard. Been using it since it released and I'll never go back.
No colon issues here... everything flows nice and smooth. *har-har* See what I did there?
Poop jokes. awesome.

I got so lucky meeting my girlfriend - she is a digital art goddess and we both *love* gifts of tech She got me my Iconia for my birthday last month, next it's my turn to give the gift of tech geek gadgets
She actually got me into Android in the first place with my first Android phone - my first computer was a Sparc workstation in the early 1990's - so getting back to using a *nix based device makes me happy

It's official! The Note IS a tablet!!!

I have conclusive evidence, despite the fact that we kinda think that the Note is a phone that it is in fact a Tablet.
If you download, (for 49p) , SwiftKey X Keyboard and install it on your Note, you may think you have a bargain, and an interesting keyboard.
BUT....
When you try to use it it will say it is'nt downloaded properly and then suggest you get the tablet version for over £3 !!!!
So Swiftkey, apart from being a little sneaky, are quite certain we have all got ta tablet.
Luckily for me, as sweat poured from my brow , I managed to get to the refund button before losing my 49p phew!!!
It nearly cost me half a pound, just to discover that I had the misguided opinion that the note was a phone
So Samsung is wrong...
But...this is a phone...It's Swftkey X that has misunderstood that only the 10.1" Note is a tablet, the 5.3" is very much the "direktør mobil" (The CEO mobile).
Truly the one, to rule them all.
I have version 2.2.0.159 for phone and I have no problems.
Wtf ? This message is only informative, it won't prevent you from using Swiftkey... Once you get past the message, you install the language packages, you set swift up and voila. You have about 10mn left to try it. But for 49 cents, it's a deal.
I also installed swiftkey, the phone version without any problem ;-)

Och!!!
My mistake then....
I thought it was not going to work without the tablet version
Still I am glad it's a phone after all
ThX for the "old" info.
Whether its really a tablet, Samsung still decides it, or the customer...
For me its a Hybrid, its a Smartlet.
btw the latest SwiftKey (non tablet) works fine here in portrait and landscape mode but yes, you're right. After the install of Swiftkey, there is a message for an upgrade to the table ver.
Maybe the SwiftKey Devs needs more money?
however its not necessary to upgrade it!
(also fine here with 240dpi)
It's work nice, just hit continue.
Plz open your dictionary and look for the word "official".

you seriously concluded that the Note is a tablet because a developer decided to say so?? and Samsung is wrong???? seriously??? and is this worth a post? how old are you my son???
I would've thought the most compelling evidence that it is NOT A TABLET is that it started off running on Gingerbread and not Honeycomb like all other tablets and the leaks for Samsung's TouchWiz ICS implementation are all running in phone rather than tablet mode. Kinda tells me its a phone.
Oh there's also that thing where it makes phonecalls and sends SMS over GSM/CDMA. That's usually something I associate with phones not tablets.
what a pointless thread...
