just wondering are developers able to port meego to our lovely htc hd2 devices...since it's lighter, more stable and eye candy...I think this gonna replace the ubuntu...Ubuntu is more for desktop or laptop...however, meego is available to handheld more devices, like nokia n900 with ARM processor...finger crossed and wait our most respect developers to do it...I definitely will appreaciate and donate when that day came...the purpose of open this thread just to collect the ideas and thoughts of hd2 users...BTW we are Linux and android lovers as well....

Meego or maemo would be great on the HD2... there are a lot of people interested in this.... i don't know why you would have a problem with this being developed. It's actually more of a true linux distro than android is.
Anyways.... I know a while back that dcordes was talking about releasing a maemo or meego build when he got a chance to. I'm sure that he's a very busy man, so we'll probably have to be patient for this.... but hopefully at some point we will see a build from somebody.
port it by youself, if nobody interested.

Hi..yeah...happy to see some positive respond...and thanks for your information,i not even know that...
Meego on HD2 makes a lot more sense than ubuntu, though I do want ubunutu as well haha.
Meego really is starting to look fairly impressive, open source, a true linux distro and Intel/Nokia are really putting money into it. Would be awesome if we could run Winmo, ubuntu, android and meego. lol, I can dream right?
Having so many OSes and choices really makes the HD2 a badass phone, what other high end phone can do the same?

Meego on our HD2's would be brilliant! IMO Not only a great alternative to Ubuntu but to Android aswell.

Complete nonsense. Meego is the main OS for all of nokia's nextgen line of high end smartphone. It is also the target OS for all of the upcoming Intel cpu based smartphones. There is a reason why there is so much investment in meego from Intel and Nokia.
Here is an old pre-alpha video of the tablet version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqeeQd-YNL0
You have to admit it looks fairly impressive, and its just a pre-alpha video.
The linux foundation also announced that meego would become the prime OS to fuel in vehicle entertainment for companies such as BMW, GM, etc.
Meego is no ATM or vending machine OS. It has lots of support and momentum behind it and I'm quite sure it will be a major upcoming mobile OS.

Indeed.
Anyway, just to make it clear, im not hating on android by any means. I absolutely love android, awesome OS. But having Meego as well would be very interesting.

but that was before a lot works.

There have recently been some fake videos of maemo 5 running on the HTC HD2.
This operating system has a very much supportive community which develops apps and ports for the n900 similar to this one.
If these two communities could be bought together it would create an insane phone. I personally feel that having maemo on the HTC HD2 would make this phone deadly and rip other devices to pieces by giving users not only windows mobile 6.5 and android, but also extending the device to the beautiful maemo.
What do you think about this?
Would you like to see maemo on your HD2?
If there are any developers out there or people who know what they are doing could you please try to port this OS over as it would be greatly appreciated by many!
Thank you.
I think it might be possible after the developers have more time away from the Android efforts. Maemo is also Linux based, so it hopefully shouldn't be too difficult after they get Android working smoothly.
Just because it is possible doesn't mean it will happen it depends of the demand on this OS from the HD2 users i love this OS and think it would be awesome on the HD2 screen and hardware.
I am sure there are many HD2 users who would love to use this on there devcie.
I think there is no hardware similar to the HD2 running Maemo, this means no proper drivers to build a port.

wrong...
as it is based on linux kernel the drivers from android should work...
Maemo would give the HD2 a new level of decisions for the owners, a new level of customisabillity. i wish i knew how and wish i had the knowledge to enable myself to do such a thing but cannot as i haven't.
Maemo WOULD beable to work on the HD2 with some effort put in by the right person.
If android can, android is linux, maemo can, maemo is linux.
But the question is will it?
I would love to see another option for the hd2. The more options the more people are attracted to the phone. More people should bring more development.

I completely agree with you.
If people had the option to choose the OS on a phone that could attract so many people to the phone. Because i know of many people who don't like windows, but would buy a windows phone if they could get more than one OS on it.
I would be like a master phone suited to everybody.
oh I wish to see this... i like Maemo very much, I had a N900 as second phone, it was amazing, maybe cooler than android, but what can I say... it didnt have a chance, too short life-time.

I agree with you
this thread should be moved onto the android/linux on hd2 thread.
And by the way, I totally side with you on this. I "hate" android. Why? It's by google, and it's not really linux. On the other side I'd love to have meego on my hd2, but think about it, not even nokia has released a single device with meego on it, and at this rate if they don't hurry when they will do that, noone will care about it anymore.
Even if I favour meego over android, like, a lot, I realistically cannot see how those who spent their blood in porting android to the hd2, and those others who develop for that platform, will invest their time and energy in another linux based mobile OS... if that OS keeps delaying itself.
I did not see news of this posted, but I'm not sure how credible the sources are because I cannot find HD2 info on the links posted, maybe you guys can understand this better.

anyway my opinion that MEEGO future is unknown now.
Looks like Nokia plans to release first phone with X86 inside, it can means that ARM versions won't be developed at all (or won't be so cool, like X86)
As well I heard nokia plans to use own programs, which will replace MEEGO standard. It can result in bad quality of this internal programs, because all will use Nokia's own versions.
As well I don't think other manufactures will support MEEGO a lot - they have Android for choose, which is more preferable from market point of view.
Anyway, time will show the truth

Since webOS runs on the Linux kernel, it is open source. The source code must be released (and has been) per the GPL and anyone can port it if they want to, minus any proprietary apps and stuff I guess.

Well, Nokia is now siding with Windows Phone 7, which makes alot of sense from a buisness standpoint, but that leaves MeeGo is a strange situation. Nokia still have plans to release a MeeGo phone, but nothing seems clear after that. Theres no word if another phone manufacturer will pick it up for themselves. Right now MeeGo is in between a rock and a hard place.

iOS. Not me.. Spare HD2 from it.
Ain't nobody here want to run a kiddie iOS on HD2. HTC HD2 can run iOS, but need to make a code in order to make it run, just like they did with Android, Ubuntu, Meego, WP7, so on...

1) HD2 cannot run iOS, it would take a significant effort to port and Apple would slap anyone who tried with a C&D so fast their head would spin. Android is open source so the you can view the source code and port things lawyer free.
2) The CPU in the A4 is manufactured by Samsung and is the same CPU in the Galaxy S (hummingbird) which is actually "even more better" than the QSD chip in our HD2s.
nice!
Regarding iOS - would be nice only to annoy I-phone users ;-)
So, any plans to bring WebOS to the HD2, now that it's opensource?
webOS is a good OS, but i hope devs will continue on meego first
What has WebOS got to do with Ubuntu?
What has WebOS got to do with Android or WM?)
WebOS isn't yet open-sourced, HP just said it will do that. No sources are available as of now, and it's silly to ask when it'll be ported to HD2 if we even don't know when sources will be available. But, it might me easier to port than meego, as meego's most interesting version (from nokia n9) is closed-source, and opensource meego is, according to devs, not much usable.

This one looks like kernel (and possibly some other GPL-ed components) sources. And it is there probably since a long time. So no, WebOS isn't open source yet.
Sorry for posting the question here. I thought , as nobody really looks at the meego board anymore, I should ask it here as the guys'n'gals that are into porting Ubuntu to the HD2 are a little more hardcore and thus apt to give an honest perspective on whether or not this could happen. I read on the Verge that someone had it running on the Evo 3D so maybe it isn't that far fetched.
As I have understood some of the UI/UX stuff is not open source yet.
We shall come back to this discussion when it's time for that.
WebOS? I'm still waitng for further development of Ubuntu! Sound? Calls? Magldr?
Bumping for interest and the sake of prosperity for our mighty HD2...
Face it Meego is going nowhere slow, if anywhere at all... With the announcements of nokia going to wp. Ubuntu is making very small but slow baby steps...
So why not stir up a craze that'd baffle the internet media once again with the viral power of what the HD2 can do?
It's been ported to many other HTC devices so why not our HD2? We can't just let it die with millions of android and wp builds and lack of interest in other projects such as linux and meego, so I only see one other hurdle to jump that being WebOS.
Well, we'd have to find someone, who could port it... If I wasn't a total failure when it comes to programming and stuff, maybe I could do it :x
The difference between Android and other OSes is Android is popular and it's rather easy to cook a ROM... But here, we'd have to work from scratch. And nobody wants that. Shame on you, community, shame!
The only thing I see possibly coming next for the HD2 is WP8 (Maybe, if it's possible or at WP7.8) I rather hate WP and still love my huge variety of apps and customability with WM... I'm doing Win95 on it, Boxmax SD XDAndroid Sense and Ubuntu...
I don't see why or how it'd be so hard if so many other HTC's have it running already, get the closest build with matching spec's between the HTC HD2 and whatever HTC is remotely similar to our in hardware, edit it for Android maybe and change the drivers of the HTC (In question) to the HTC HD2 in code by similarity of Android builds for HD2. On a side note, I read that the HTC Evo 4G is the same phone as the HD2 on XDA, so if we could find a WebOS Build for that we'd be off to a good start. Then onto the debugging and next step is glory.
If I knew anything about coding and cooking I'd give it a whack, but I don't know much about it.

Windows 8 is Windows 7 and we did that already, we'd just be spinning our wheels or going backwards then instead of moving forward with bootable os'es.
If you want Windows 8 so bad on your HD2 hunt around for a 7.8 rom, closest you'll prolly get. Anyways you could get in a whole lot more trouble cooking an OS/Rom onto an unsupported phone that hasn't even been released yet to normal consumer users yet.
WebOS would be great those who aren't ready for Android or don't want it and those who don't like WP, but desire something other than WinMo 6.5.
WebOS is dead...
