I've just spent few hours trying to build android-msm-2.6.32 Linux kernel for Dell Streak.
It turns out that it is impossible, without device specific board files.
These files are in the Linux kernel source tree Dell used to build kernel for Streak and Dell is obliged under the terms of GPL, to give this source to any owner of Streak requesting it.
So,
- If you want Froyo on your Streak, build by modders,
- If you want CyanogenMod on your Streak
- If you want Ubuntu, Debian, MeeGo, Maemo on your Streak
Write, mail, call, tweet Dell demanding the source you have the (GPL) right to have.
Post a blog entry. Notify your favorite news service that Dell is violating GPL. Post a Facebook/Twitter/etc. status. Make some buzz.
If we create enough pressure for Dell, they will finally stop violating GPL and give us the kernel source.
Dell technical support details are here: http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor..._support?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=anavml
Call them and demand the Streak kernel source, you have the right to have.
You can message @Direct2Dell and/or @LionelatDell on Twitter asking where you can get the Streak kernel source.
You may request the source at Dell Support for Facebook Fans too: http://apps.facebook.com/dellfeedback/
Dell Press Office email: [email protected]
Phone number to the head office in Bracknall: 01344 860456
If you know any other channer to reach Dell, please post it here and I will update the list.
see post 8 and 9 in the copy of this thread at modaco .. i still cant post link .. what a **** ..
there is an answer at modaco and i think also we should wait and let them spent their ressources for new firmware, then ask for kernel sources ..

We have the right to have this source and I'm fed up with excuses.
This just in from Lionelatdell's twitter
We're reviewing concerns re: the #dellstreak source code. We intend to comply with all applicable requirements. More details soon.

Your first order of bussiness should be to get dell to ship the dam things!
And tell them we are very displeased.
By the way, congrats!
glad to hear it. couldnt think of anyone better. any chance you could merge all the dup threads. theres at least 5 threads about unlocking the streak. lock em and lets move on
Now that the USA release is NOT going to be the end of July --- when is it ?? Anyone know ?

I asked if they could release the CORRECT code, and this is the response I got:
Thank you for your continuous interest on our product.
We would like to know about your issue.
You mean that you cann''t even build the source?
Please send full details of your problem for Kernel source. (ex: build error log, build Environment)
We will provide the response ASAP, but this week is our Thanksgiving Day.
so we get 4 days off to celebrate (2010/09/21 ~ 2010/09/24)
We ask for your understanding regarding this matter.
Thank you.

Dean Sir,
There is only one "n" in "can".
I am happy to hear that you are interested in my problem. My problem is I don't have what I want. Thanksgiving, whatever iteration of it you are having, is comprised of two parts, the second of which is "giving". With you giving me what I want now, you will in turn earn my thanks.
This should make everything okay.
Sincerely,
X

Samsung is a Korean company, so I would assume it's Korean.
Don't bother Koush with that, he hasn't been focusing on getting the fascinate kernel to compile, you'll just be forcing him to hit the delete button one more time on his PM box.
Angel or myself will discuss this with hc, jt, noobnl, Lil, a few others and figure out how best to describe our problems to them.
Thanks for posting your response, as of now we hadn't hear anything back.

yes... i've been dealing with a lot of korean companies, but all the e-mail responses are not made by any sort of technical engineers or have at least the knowledge of providing the proper answers.
These ppl just take the keywords out of the question and simply replies with the best matching response from their 'pre-made' messages...
so... not really helpful unless you really call them or go up to them...

Guys this is just the canned response you get for emailing them. When we requested the source in the first place we got this, then another email that told us source was released. It's not that simple. Samsung use binaries they are simply not allowed to release source for, due to IP rights and stuff of their respective owners.
These hardware designers have no duty nor intention to release source for their IP just because they're used in conjunction with an open source OS.

Signed because this is important. And I don't think it's a bad idea to have a separate topic for this because not everyone lurks on the CM discussion/dev threads
NOT signed because this is really NOT important!
Samsung, will, I am sure, release what source code they can (for legal reasons, such as IP licensing) ONCE THEY RELEASE ICS for the SGS2.
They WON'T release the source code before that, as they are still changing the code and working on the features / bugs etc. to make ICS work on the SGS2.
No amount of b*tching from anyone will make a large multi-national like Samsung drastically change their development / release cycles *JUST* to keep a very small number of users happy.
... remember they're under NO OBLIGATION to release this source code in full... although I'm sure they will...

What you don't seem to grasp is that Samsung DOES release its code within the month of releasing an official ROM (Update1, 2 and 3 of the Gingerbread source being the prime example of this). They release the source they CAN release. The petition is to put pressure on them for the rest of the source code, which I agree with stuclark, is quite possible will not happen. I signed the petition just in case to give an extra number to a petition I don't believe will matter.
stuclark is entitled to his opinion, as you are, so let him post what he wants. He did not do it in a cruel manner or with horrible intentions. He is in his right to not sign if he does not believe. This is just like a friend of mine who got bullied by students because she didn't wanna sign a petition.
And he is right you know, 5200 users as opposed to the millions of phones that were sold... Is a VERY small portion of the SGS2 community.

I have no problems when someone is entitled to his/her opinion.
BUT (s)he said that "it isn't important".
However, as there are people who sign this petition (or would, if they knew that it exists) it's BS.
(S)he should have said that it's not important in her/his opinion. That's quite a difference.
Your "argument" is nice too. The typical "you can't change anything anyway" argument.
Congratulations, if you think that way.
