[Q] myTouch slide as a G1 successor - myTouch 3G Slide General

So I bricked my G1 and considering myTouch slide as a new phone
Any feedback on the phone is appreciated, are you happy with ?
The specs online isn't very detailed, does it have all the features of the G1, like GPS, compass ..etc.
Anything you don't like about it ?
Also I would be using it outside the US, anything to keep in mind, or I just need an unlock code and that's it ?
Feedback appreciated

I like 'em quite a bit... My concern was with the CPU being 600. I had the Intercept from sprint; it SUCKED. I had the Moment from sprint - it was okay but the data lockups on cdma from sprint are RETARDED.
Anyway... the CPU though; because of the MyTouch Slide's better GFX support it seems like the CPU actually didn't make any difference at all... The Slide actually performs better IMO
Also theres a kernel for 806mhz i think it was...

..
if you need one badly then yes if not wait until september 29th for the g2
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/08/and-just-like-that-the-g2-in-the-wild/

I upgraded to this phone from my G1 a couple of days ago. It's a lot more responsive and you can actually put widgets on the home screen and have fun with the OS without it running like poop. Had CM6 on both of them, the difference in performance is very noticeable.
Kind of a pain in the neck to root at the moment, but it's doable. The keyboard also takes some getting used to if you were typing before without looking, as the layout is set up a bit different - definitely prefer the G1 keyboard over the Slide.

Personally I do not like the keybaord layout
From what I read its going to be pretty hard for them to push out a 1ghz processor on the mytouch slide as well.
It is going to be the 528mhz and 5 mp camera w/flash.
im mad all these new phones keep coming out, I had the G1 and I loved it, then the mytouch came out and I got that..THEN they basically said **** YOU and brought out another mytouch with a headphone jack! FML FML FML!
4 row keyboard = fail
There will ALWAYS be another phone. Just like mom said, "there are more fish in the sea". Be patient and buy a new phone for the features, not because it's the new one. If you don't like this one, just wait a few months and there will be another one.
I think a lot of rumors and speculations are being tossed around here.
After using the White myTouch Slide for a good bit I can confirm that it is most likely not using the same 528mhz processor as previously used in the myTouch 3G. Running 2.1 and HTC Sense UI alone can be a chore on the first myTouch and G1 but on this phone it ran like a dream (no pun intended). Tried to see if I could find lag within the launcher and had widgets on ALL home screens with no problems at all jumping from app to app or opening the app drawer. Speeds were comparable to the N1 although I doubt it has a 1ghz. Although the whole time I was playing with it I didn't think to confirm the processor speeds with any apps so I'll have to do that Monday or something.
Beautiful phone though and the 4 row keyboard is one of the nicest I've seen. The spacing on keys makes it so nice for texting/emailing. It will take some adjustments as do all new phones.
Definitely going to be my next purchase moving from the G1. Glad I held off on the HD2 and N1 as I enjoy the luxury of CHOOSING my keyboard preference.

here you go. I posted the full specs. In the myTouch section since it is the myTouch slide!
This was taken from someone who posted on another site but seems legit:
I work for T-Mobile and am supposed to be getting one of these soon as part of a MyTouch Champion promotion. I was also a a meeting this evening a rep had already received his, and from everything I see, it flat out flies! I know the processor isnt much of an increase, but HTC has done something right because the multitouch seemed really responsive and the new Sense looks clean. I was also told at the meeting that the processor is actually 700 MHz, not 600, so take it for what it’s worth, but I’ll be more than happy to post again once I receive mine.

They've already sent them out to employees in Las Vegas. Maybe even as long as a week ago. I read it somewhere not too long ago. They said they were impressed - but most of those gadget sites always rate something "good." It may look pretty, but that doesn't mean its a good phone. I'll be waiting for Google's next phone. Or another good HTC phone. No more in store phones for me. MyTouch/G1 was good - but they don't carry the actual GOOD phones. As I've said before (somewhere, lol): If HTC had the best phone on the market and released it to T-Mobile and T-Mobile locks it to their network only... well, thats just bad business. Think about how many more G1s would have sold if they released it for EVERY carrier.
P.S.: Is that keyboard italic? That's just tacky.
Liked it till I saw the keyboard. Too much going on. And what's with the funky g button?
I'll pass thank you...

Why not?
The layout is *correct*, which is NOT the case on ANY OTHER android phone except the DREAM.
You will note that the typical INCORRECT layout has the Q button directly above the A button, which is directly over the Z button. This INCORRECT layout is virtually useless since the buttons are in the WRONG PLACES!!!
The lack of the 5th row does not make the layout bad. The layout can be either correct or incorrect, and in this case, it is correct.

You may be confused by the fact that "G1" is ***NOT THE PRODUCT'S REAL NAME***, but they are MOST DEFINITELY available for ALL carriers with compatible frequencies. *** The one sold as ANDROID DEVELOPER PHONE 1 *** is NOT bootloader or sim locked, or, for that matter, even sold via carriers. Good for EVERY carrier!

Thinking of trading my HD2 for a mytouch slide

just wanted to see your thoughts
i miss my g1 and some of the apps, played with a slide and loved it (i prefer the web browsing experience)
obviously this is personal preference, but what do you guys think
I would say that a MT slide would be a step down, but if you miss Android it is probably the best Android phone T-Mo has now. I think there are better Android phones coming to T-Mo in the near future.

While the slide is a great phone I would wait till the 15th and get the Vibrant.
Well, I still need to receive the 3rd and final phone, before I can have T-Mobile do a direct swap. Which (by their words) I should be able to choose from something similar, I'm not sure what the price point of the Vibrant is, Although I like the slide out keyboard on the myTouch
Also I don't really see how the Slide is a step down, I mean sure the HD2 has better specs but IMO the resources aren't used properly (wish tmo had the Supersonic). Ive tried multiple roms on the HD2 and the all end up freezing at some point or another.
I originally had a MyTouch and I can actually say the HD2 is light years ahead of it. And i wouldn't even think of upgrading to the plastic feel and bulky look and the horrible slide functionality of a hard keyboard. One the 600 MHZ processor is still to slow for sense and Genious is a joke.
I have not had any issues with freezing with the old ROM or the new 2.13 ROM. I may wait for the Android port for the devise. But i don't see any upgrading for me any time soon. TMobile is suppose to be getting 1 or 2 more HTC devices, so I will have to keep an eye out for an HD3 or similar!

SAY WHAT! incase you haven't notice, samsung hasn't done that good of a job on their Android phones, you should read all of the complaints they have.

[Q] What to buy after a G1 ?

So I bricked my G1 yesterday ( bad bad me )
Maybe it's time for a new phone, but I can't find a good alternative so far
If I can't I'll just buy another old one
The things I liked about the G1 ( beside android ofcourse )
1- Keyboard
Keyboard, I do alot of typing and remote shell connection, so a touch screen keyboard doesn't do it for me
The G1 keyboard was really ideal for this
2- Availability of Roms
3- GPS that would work even without network connection , not assisted gps
4- Compass
Things I didn't like but was surviving with
1- Speeeeeed
2- Memory size
3- Camera and Flash
Any suggestions on what phone to get after a good old G1 ?
My touch slide seems like a good alternative,
Has anyone tried it, any feedback ?
Any other suggestions ?
How about the G2? It seems like a fitting successor. The design is not so grand in my opinion, but it should be a top of the line handset. I am a keyboard only type of guy. I am in love with the Epic 4g styling. I like the Touch Pro 2 in terms of design. However the iffy state of Android on the TP2 is a put-off. Stay tuned for the G2. It's going to be a big phone in terms of technology and T-Mobiles hop into HSPA.
http://www.engadget.com/tag/g2/
Or if you want a G1, some fella started a thread in this forum selling his.
I love the G1 & just recently stopped using one, tmobs phone selection as far as to android devices is pretty mediocre in comparison to others, so when time came I dumped then & got an evo... I was a big stickler on the keyboard as well, but an onscreen keyboard on a 4.3 screen isn't so bad, but I do miss the feel of an actual keyboard, you kinda get to know it by touch. But gps, compass all that stuff is pretty much standard android, check out the epic if your looking to jump I think that's qwerty & should be a sweet phone & as far as roms, pretty much if they have rooted the device your gonna find a slew of roms to follow...but if your sticking with tmob then I would just browse there devices forums here to see which seem to have the most support, after having a G1 forever, I had to go get me a suped (?) Up android phone and tmob didn't cut it, I think that samsung phone is there only 1g phone & i don't believe that has a keyboard though... At any rate good luck, heh, if you stick with anything android after the G1 you can't really go wrong anyway.

Yeah, G2 looks very interesting, but it's not out yet, and frankly I'm not the 'latest and greatest' type, I prefer to wait untill a new product gets in the market for a few month and stabilizes in terms of price and performance
maxomus
Thanks for the epic tip, will look into it
hhmm, found out the Epic is not out yet as well, looks very interesting though
You'd be broke if you were always getting that latest and greatest.
But the G2 -- IMHO and I am a devout TMobile customer, Did the whole Sidekick line (moved to Android/G1 like 4 weeks before we found out TMobile was not working on a new Sidekick and 4 months before they announced the Sidekick was dead!) TMo knows has secured its immaculate position in Android history as the first carrier on Android. I recall analysts predicting Tmo would miserably fail if not go bankrupt/buyout with the Android platform. How wrong they were!
The HTC Dream is the first phone ever on Android. Its successor, the HTC Vision is quite fitting ---- you cannot really have a Vision without first having a Dream.... (actually its impossible to visualize something without first provoking a dream to correspond to said vision) TMO's pathetic compatitors, Verizon/Sprint and even ATT (yes even ATT!) have had glory days this year, but TMO is about to re-emerge with the next GREAT phone --- the HTC Vision/G2.
G2 probably will never end up being the third Android Developer Phone because the Nexus One probably will still be able to matriculate anything the G2 does.... but what the N1 cannot do, that the G2 may be able to do is dual core processor!!! Ive never ran WinMo before, (spend too much time on Windows anyway) but if the G2 is in fact capable, it will be fun to pwn Ballmer)
In short --- and with the big picture in mind, and the fact that the G2 is the first HDSPA phone which will also be a World Phone and that it has a keyboard adds up to something simple -- the G2 is going to be the BOMB!!!
What is really on my mind that I do not understand is... Danger's Sidekick.... which is now proprietary Microsoft, that was created by Andy Rubin (VP Engineering Android) and HTC are working on... something freaky... the rebirth of the SideDroid. A microsoft phone which can possibly intra-dual-core (both boots runnning simultaneously and in tandem, if not comprehensively and intermingly.... do we do Bing orr do we do Google? or Bing? Google?
Bring it.
androidcues
I agree, G2 will probably be a big hit
but I need a phone now
I think I might just settle for another used G1 for a few months untill G2, Epic are out there in a good price point
wanna send me one of the several one's you have as a birthday gift
It cool they are coming with the G2...I hope it has an 1GHZ Processor.
But if mobile carrier is not a prefernce, the Droid is a good smartphone/w a physical keyboard. The reason I won't get one b/c I don't particularly care for Verizon and I like GSM phones.

I loved the G1 because of its clean and simple design.
Do not like the look of the G2 at all.
The Motorola droid x is the best looking device out there at the moment, although apparently the packaged software is dire and motorola have added preventative measures to stop people flashing non-motorola-approved roms.
As a result I would be looking at the Nexus one if i had to choose today. Its restriction free, will have barely no carrier 'fluff' integrated into the rom, and will be supported for a long time.
Wait....Isn't G2 the Hero? I'm confused. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPkeXZbaw3Q&feature=related
[EDIT]
Never mind. I found Its nickname "Vision"
I agree with most of what you said. I got a text from T-Mobile this morning saying the G2 was coming. So I get on the net to check out their own website, it wasn't working. So I search the net to find out anything about it and doesn't appear to be much better. They've increased the megapixels on the camera but only to a 5 when a number of phone have an 8. Also disappointed that there's no flash. Impressed that the screen will be bigger and I'm okay to part with the keyboard as long as the on-screen keyboard is accurate. I've loved my G1 but have recently become very disappointed with the number of apps I'm UNable to download because I run out of memory. If that issue is fixed on the G2 I'll be happy. I've been contemplated ridding myself of T-Mobile only because of the lack of great phones. I have no complaint with service or customer service but would like to see some better phones. I was all about getting and HD2 until I realized it was not carrying the android market. I would like to see more from T-Mobile.

Dont get me wrong the phone is incredible, everything opens so quickly and smoothly all the time. Battery life is good for me too,and i love the design...but i want a phone that will lack support, which i feel this will have too.

What's it like to use a g1?

Hi guys,
I've been really itching to get a second phone with a good qwerty keypad and I am really considering a G1. I just tried one out and and the screen resolution and sensitivity is kinda disappointing but I still want one lol
Can anyone tell me whats it like to use the G1 as a daily driver? Is it painfully slow? What about mobile browsing compared to the n1? or the hero? how slow is the g1?
I've used the Hero before and mobile browsing experience was painfully slow. There were times wherein everything really slowed down and I had to reboot everything just to get things done.
Also, whats the best and fastest 2.1 sense rom for daily use? 1.5 sense? Are the froyo roms running well on the G1 or are they really just for novelty?
Thanks!
It's a decent phone, esp. If you get it rooted with the 2.1 Mod. But, it's starting to show it's age after 2 years, and many apps/programs on the phone will slow it down a bit.
Plus, the camera, while it takes good pictures, is lacking. No real Video (w/o the mod), no Flash and no Zoom (but you can do it after you take the pic, WTF).
But as one of the few GSM physical keyboard Smartphones, It's ok, but like I've said, it's age is starting to show, so in like a year you will probably wanna get another phone.

Please, No!..
Youll regret buying such a relic, youre better off buying a G2 when its released later this year...The G1 is the ancestor to all the other phones, you should NOT buy the G1, it struggles to handle 1.6+ w/o....But with a newer phone you can enjoy all features without giving up performance, i just got a slide and its the bomb...But im giving her up to save for the g2 instead...YOU WILL be disappoint...That's a promise.
LOL, thanks for the input guys!
Almost made the mistake of buying, I was kind of expecting performance similar to the Hero or Magic but I guess not. I also tried the touchpro2 and it is a total piece of crap ) Resistive screens does the phone no justice and the OS is just clunky.
Why are there still devs working on the G1 if it can't even handle 1.6 properly? For novelty?

Oh it can handle 1.6 just fine. but 2.1 sucked noodles for so long. Right now Froyo is not bad at all on the G1 though, i use HTC Clay's build off cyanogen and it works perfectly fine for me, it's been like 3 days since i first installed the rom and it's good. It is awesome for how long it's put out, but i bet every g1 owner including myself is just itching to buy their next smartphone asap!

If you try a stock rom then use one of the 2.1+ roms, the stock is much faster...I personally tried this experiment, my stock, nonrooted G1 was much faster than the one clocked all the way to 576...Thats a damn shame. Overclocking is supposed to help speed things by a lot. Dont get me wrong i appreciate their hard work, but the hardware just cant handle the OS correctly.
Whoa, I have the same question! I was looking at buying a G1, since I have simple needs and I enjoy annoying people who technolust over the newer phones.
But if it struggles during those simple needs (ordinary phone stuff and youtube quality video) then I guess I'll wait.

I dont use mobile youtube, but it can do stuff like call, text, web just fine...The froyo browser seems kind of jerky on the G1 for me. your better off getting a Galaxy S/Vibrant/Fas/Epic or the G2.
I have a plain vanilla g1. I have used text messaging a lot, make very few calls (just not that into talking on the phone) internet browsing mostly, google navigation, picture taking, reading e-books, etc. I would say it is an ok phone for those things, however, that said, I am definitely looking to see what comes out this fall. I have been reading about a lot of the cool things android can do past the 2.0 barrier and want to upgrade for those reasons. If you are considering the g1 and do not mind that the community has gone beyond the hardware, and are not all that interested in apps, it is a good solid workhorse. If you are app envious, wait. Just tossing in my .02 from someone who does not root and rom. Hope this helps your decision.
The only reason I can stand using the G1 is because I have an iPhone 3GS as my main phone. My G1 is just to mess around with Android. Works great for that.
Don't get the G1 if you want a new phone though. Wait for the G2. It looks awesome.
I agree. Don't get a G1. It is definitely showing its age.

RIP my beloved rooted G1

I need opinions on the Mytouch 3g slide

Hi everyone. I'm switching TMO and have decided on the Mytouch 4G. I'm having a hard time deciding which phone to get for my wife. She really wants a phone with a keyboard and likes my current phones capabilities (samsung captivate). I was thinking about the G2, but after seeing the hinge I'm thinking that's not the best idea since she tends to drop her phone and stuff. Although the Mytouch 3g slide is slightly older I'm considering getting that one.
What I want to know is if current users of the Mytouch 3g Slide think that it is a good phone for a first time android user who will mainly use it for texting, light web viewing, email and some Facebook posting.
I would appreciate any feedback you all can provide.

Yes, it's a great phone for a first timer (that's me).
I will say this though, I rarely use the physical keyboard any more. With Swype, SwiftKey and now the Gingerbread keyboard, there's just not much reason. I usually end up bumping the volume key with me finger when I use the physical keyboard.
Aside from that though, it's a great phone. It might not be the fastest or fanciest on the market, but it gets the job done.
My wife, on the other hand, is also a first time Android user and just got the MyTouch 4G. She absolutely loves it, it feels sturdier, and everyday it seems more likely she'll see a Gingerbread upgrade before I see Froyo.
Unless she's dead-set on the keyboard, I'd go with the 4G.
For its price, it is a great phone. Just root it and install CyanogenMod 6 on it, and it is really fast and stabe.
Thanks sandpaperback and UberMario. You have both given me confidence in getting this phone.
I've been trying to convince her to go with a keyboard-less phone, but she is set on it so I figure why argue. LOL. I'm thinking about just having her try it without the keyboard and only using touch screen and if she starts to like it then I will just take it back and exchange it for the Mytouch 4g.
Thanks again for the info.

just going to add what everyone else said that if your wife tends to drop phones, she's gonna need a protective skin/case. the shell knicks too easily. other than that, its a sturdy, reliable, good average user phone
Thanks for the suggestion on the shell/case. I will make sure I get her one.

The Slide is a good phone for a first time user. The keyboard is damn good and, even though it's all plastic, it's pretty sturdy. Hell, I've dropped mine a few times and the worst that happened besides a few scratches was the battery cover and battery fell out. But it doesn't have the greatest available storage at 145 MB before you put anything on it. Also the processor is outdated (ARMv6, the same as the G1!). But, if you're planning on buying it outright, then go ahead and get your wife a slide.
However, if you're planning on getting it on contract, I'd say either go with a G2 or try and convince your wife that she'll be able to text fine without a keyboard and get her a Mytouch 4G or get a Nexus S and give her your MT4G. They're all going to be more future-proof, having better processors, memory and storage and, especially with the NS being Google branded, you're more guaranteed updates.
HTC and T-Mobile have all but abandoned this phone and the developer support for the Slide has all but died, with only a few competent developers working on it. Now if you were to ask me this a few months ago, I would have said 'ya, get it. It's a great phone'. But now, I say it's an ok phone, but it has a short lifespan.
Those are my two cents.

Now if you were to ask me this a few months ago, I would have said 'ya, get it. It's a great phone'. But now, I say it's an ok phone, but it has a short lifespan.
Those are my two cents.

I agree, go with the G2 or MT4G, you'll be much happier with one of those instead..But with swype and the large screen-the MT4G is easy to use, the slide's kb isnt the best.Get something fast that you know can handle future updates, also the other phones have better resolutions, so it's good for watching stuff on.
Thanks guys, now I have more to think about. A little earlier I had my wife use my Captivate to send a long text. She did alright for not being used to it. I think I'm going to get her the Mytouch 4g and if she doesn't like it after a week or so then I will exchange it for a G2. The hinge on the G2 just has me worried cause it doesn't look very strong.

It's a terrible phone. It's slow, has a low resolution screen, and the CPU is ARM v6, so if you root it and put Cyangoenmod on it, you'll never have flash support.

I love my 3gs. I have rooted it and messed that up a few times when I was first learning and it never bricked. I have flashed it a few times and it keeps on ticking. It is easy typing and I love the slide out keys. Great phone ...
