Enable animated GIFs in stock browser - Droid X General

I notice that animated GIFs are still not enabled by default in the browser after the Froyo update. Does anyone know how to do this?

Sub'd for hopeful solution

my friends droid 1 has the froyo update and it has animated GIFs... this has been my biggest complaint about the OS. I go to spikedhumor.com and I enjoy my daily GIFs, but can only (semi) enjoy them because the wife is present
I hope this is in the final build of Froyo.
I have been posting on the google code site about this issue since early 2009.
one of the google reps on the page replied with a way to implement it, and I posted it on this site elsewhere a while back. I'll repost it here with a link to the source.
If you want to work around this with your own Android build, you'll need to modify C++ code, rebuild, and
reflash your phone. You'll need to make two fixes to the released sources.
1) edit the function should_use_animated_gif() in
external/webkit/WebCore/platform/graphics/android/ImageSourceAndroid.cpp (around line 217). Return true
to animate gifs.
2) Change setRGBA() in /WebCore/platform/image-decoders/ImageDecoder.h (around line 173) to call
*dest = SkPackARGB32(a, r, g, b);
instead of
*dest = (a << 24 | r << 16 | g << 8 | b);
With these changes, gifs will animated correctly on large memory devices like Droid and Nexus One.
There's no code path for animating gifs in arbitrary applications like Gallery, except by rewriting it to host a
WebView modded as described above.

Have you tired it with the latest build of Adobe Flash Player? Found here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=763584

Animated GIFs have nothing to do with flash. Nothing whatsoever.
Animated GIFs are several images (GIFs) contained within the single shell GIF.
They typically trigger browsers to play it which makes it look animated.
This is similar to how the boot animations and some live backgrounds are done on Android devices. Except they do it with PNG files.

i havent gone to any .gif sites but the forums that i visit regularly that have .gif avatars play just fine since the update to 2.2

that is where i usually see gifs as well, but not working for me. just shows the one picture.

Running unrooted 2.2 on my dX gives me Animated gifs. Default settings in stock browser, not sure if anything else i did may have enabled them but basically they just work.
Feel free to point me to look at some settings for you guys if you want to try to make it work on your phones, im new to android (Smart phones in general actually) so ill need some points.

it'll overwrite ur current opera
much much faster compared to previous version, imo, atleast on my diamond
Thanks. How do I keep this thing from starting up on boot? Its really annoying and I don't see it in the Windows startup folder.
using it now and there is a number of announces going on. I don't know it's the skin but:
1) if the page (in full screen) is loading and I scroll/pan it will jump out of full screen mode. however, if the page finished loading and I scroll/pan it stays in full screen mode.
2)screen/skin response is a bit laggy at times. I really feels it is skin related because if I click a link in my RSS reader to open in opera it would show that the page is loading but doesn't show that a new tab is open until after (roughly) 10 seconds (where as in earlier builds it is shown immediately). I think this is somehow related to the jumping out of full screen problem.
EDIT
3) when double tap to zoom in, the wait it to focus is a bit longer than usual. restarted and this problem went away.
4) I really prefer the zoom slider at the bottom of the page a) because it's much smoother and responsive, b) because I'm left handed so it's better access.
good things:
1) I like that as you type the text area follows along, even though I have a good size screen I know smaller screen users would appreciate this.
2)it seems faster but some of the discrepancies I mentioned above sort of made this improvement moot.
3) it uses sip that is set at default (tested with TouchPal)
4) got a 59/100 in acid3 test (I think the test is somewhat flawed because it seems network dependent, I ran the test 3 times, I got 59, 57, 60. so I took the middle value of the 3. if I should use the average of these 3 it would be 58.6666∞, technically 59)
5) scroll velocity is back. but it doesn't "refresh" the page as you scroll/pan, so you'll be seeing a lot of gray area even if your height and width buffers are set up to 1028 (although this size helps a lot while reducing velocity to 150).
all in all, I will be using it.
** for those who can't enter text/comment on xda after hitting the "post reply" button while using opera, all you have to do is set user agent spoof to 3 in the config. for the last 5 builds I had to do this to be able to post comments here. not everyone has this problem.
** can anyone post the "image.css" file that should be found in the folder "opera9\styles\"
Guys, if anyone of you used Opera 2520, how does this compare to it? Just wanted some insights that's all!
All the best!
What does "Full Flash support" mean? Youtube (and some other sites) only like in previous versions, or is it really FULL flash support now?
I really doubt it's full flash. It won't do CNN, Yahoo, ESPN, etc. videos. It does some of them at least on my 2520 version.
Yeah the flash addon just makes it really slow. Gonna disable it.
I cannot tell if it's flash that's making it slow, i know those darn stupid scripts make it slow! disabling it is real fast but only do it to websites that don't use those stupid scripts!

CyanogenMod MMS not resizing photos

I was told in the main CM thread that starting a new thread about this issue specifically is more likely to get attention, so here it is.
In the last 4 version of CM on my Nexus One (5.0.5-5.0.5.3), the MMS app is not resizing the photos taken with the camera app. When I go to get details on a photo that MMS is trying to send, it shows that it's anywhere between 600kb and 1000kb, clearly too large to send through AT&T. When I flash back to the stock rom, the MMS app resizes these same photos and they go through every time.
I tried sending an MMS earlier today with no luck, I'm on 5.0.5.2
I thought it was something i was doing wrong :/
I have the same problem
I guess we'll have to wait for 5.0.5.4...
I have the same issue. The only workaround I found was to use Handscent SMS instead of the built-in messaging app.

This is what I'm currently doing. Two things that suck about Handscent (from what I can tell). 1) It compresses the pictures to VERY small, so they actually look pretty lousy on a phone with a high resolution display. I think it compresses them down to 11kb. 2) Handscent doesn't send video.
This has been an issue with CM since the initial release. i switched to using Handcent as well.
Have you gone to the Settings menu in the Messaging App? From there go all the way to the bottom and Select Custom User Agent. Try selecting different ones and see if that changes anything.

I have tried all the user agents, none of these settings affect the size of the file being sent so it does nothing for this problem.
Any luck using chompsms?
i've had trouble with both reg message app and handcent....just reporting...HAHA
uh yep. same problem here. super annoying.
hopefully Steve has seen this and will look into it. I have played around with it a lot over last two days. It seems very random, works, then doesn't. I dunno....See if Steve mentions anything in next ROM update changelog, lets all hang tight, he's never let us down!!
chompsms has worked best in resizing mms and such
much prefer it to stock and handcent overall in use as well
I don't think this has anything to do with the CM ROM as I get the same on stock and from what I've read everyone seems to have the same issue.
There are other posts on here about this as well as on Googles Nexus help forum.
I struggled with the same issue. Firstly, as already pointed out, this is not an issue with Cyanogen, its the stock SMS app that is the culprit.
The solution is to edit your Mms.apk and hopefully Cyanogen will implement this fix in a new version.
Just use whatever binary editor on your OS to edit mms_config.xml which is in mms.apk. The limits are clearly visible as ASCII text in there. As the limit is 1048576, you need to make that 0307200 to be on the safe side. I also edited the resolution, 1024x768 would seem plenty for an MMS. The result is that out going messages here are around 100kb when resized and it never hits that 300KB limitation.
So start with unzipping the Mms.apk, then edit the file called mms_config.xml, and just zip it back up again.
Again, hopefully this fix can be implemented in the next Cyanogen version
cyanogen said that hes thinking about making the messaging app be configurable so we can choose which size the app does.
thanks for the tip Untouchab1e, but when i tried to unrar the file opened the xml file, edit with dreamweaver, changed the file size and the resolution (i did 800x600 though), but i rar it back up and rename to apk. Doesnt work. Am i doing something wrong?
EDIT
Well my current workaround for now is, download picsay (free) from the market, open picsay, tap get picture, open the picture you want, hit normal, hit menu button when the picutre is showing (menu on the 4 keys at the bottom) hit export, tap on save to sd card. after the picture has saved, open messaging app, attach a picture, open the picsay folder, select the picture and send. delete the picture from picsay if needed.
Any kind developers willing to recompile the Mms.apk with the edited xml file? I changed the file myself with the recommended settings, but I haven't the programming background to even begin to understand the process of putting the apk back together (everything I read about it gave me a headache).
Here's the zip file that contains everything, which technically just needs to be converted into an apk.
+1 here.
This is the biggest Problem for me with CM-Rom...
Its impossible to take a Picture and send it via MMS.
Iam 100% sure that the Picture-Resizing is working on Stock-Rom.
Please dont get me wrong, iam really happy with CM's Rom but iam wondering why Cyanogen didnt fixed this since the first release because its something like a "Basic-Feature" but it seems to be more important to have fancy color LED-Notifications...
Cyanogen, please fix this soon
It appears this is fixed in the upcoming 5.0.6 ROM, or at least it is in the test version.
You can also push the older 5.0.4.x version to get it working in 5.0.5.x, instructions are here.
I have a feeling that these settings only affect those using the Nexus One on AT&T, and since CM's ROM's are used by people in numerous countroes and various networks, it would make sense to keep it open for those carriers to allow larger pictures. That's just my guess though.
I tried 5.0.5.6 briefly just to test this and the results seemed to be the same. I'm going to try pushing the older version, but I don't want to lose the black background. I think it's slick.
Edit: Just reverted to the 5.0.5.4 MMS file as posted above without theme options and it's still not working. I also forgot that the old and stock version of this app have that inconsistent behavior when pressing the back button (sometimes you load all threads, sometimes you get kicked back to the home screen). Nandroid restoring now...

xxJPY Froyo 2.2.1 general internet rendering issues

Update:
Some headway is being made on this. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907659&page=8
Ok, here's the damage report.
Serendipity ROM: animated GIF broken AND checkerboards
Phoenix ROM: animated GIF broken AND checkerboards
Firefly ROM: animated GIF broken AND DOES NOT checkerboard (with latest version ONLY)
Cognition 3.0x: animated GIF WORKS AND DOES NOT checkerboard
ROM Kitchen: animated GIF broken AND DOES NOT checkerboard (with XWJS3 w/2.2 browser ONLY)
Perception 10.x: animated GIF broken AND DOES NOT checkerboard
di11igaf ROM: animated GIF broken AND DOES NOT checkerboard
Ultimate ROM: animated GIF broken AND checkerboards
I have tested all ROMs released that were developed based on JPY Froyo 2.2.1. This includes the latest Phoenix, Perception, Serendipity, Doc Gingerborg, and others. I spent 2 entire sleepless nights doing complete flashes from scratch, without any data on the phone, and came up with this out of all of them.
While in general they are good, fast, and stable, there are a number of issues they are having that I believe are inherent to the base firmware. Some are fixable, such as the Wifi battery drain bug; others, I'm not sure. The main one, in my opinion, are general issues with the internet/browser rendering of Froyo.
The problems are as follows:
1. Animated GIFs do not render properly. They are very random and sometimes to not work at all. You should try it and see for yourself.
2. Trying to type into fields are VERY hit and miss. For example, when browsing to a forum, such as this one, when responding to a thread, try clicking in the field where you type the response; what happens is that the cursor goes WAY up the screen, while you are left staring at the bottom of the blank white space. This happens in any forum. Some forums do not have apps developed for mobile, so it renders it useless.
3. Tapping and holding (moving) the page around in general is very iffy. Most of the time you can see a checkered background when this happens, instead of it being seamless, like it is in Froyo 2.2 ROMs. It's easy to see this on the Google homepage when it opens.
We all know that Android OSes use a cut down version of the Dolphin browser. So I installed Dolphin HD. Same problems. Only when I installed mobile Firefox as well as mobile Opera, do the problems disappear. It seems that if you open these browsers, go to a page that has animated GIFs, it sort of "kick starts" the rendering engine, from which point animated GIFs start working in the Dolphin based browser. However, the moment you close mobile Firefox or Opera, the animated GIF problem returns. Also, the issue is that using those browsers are not a solution, since they are not fully featured, underperform, slow, and are in general underdeveloped, and not suitable for daily use. I also tried taking the browser from the older versions and putting it in the new ones, but it didn't help.
That's basically all I came up with for now. That made the experience a break-it deal for me, so I simply moved back, in this case, to Perception 9.5, which works flawlessly. Any of the ROMs based on the older 2.2 Froyo firmware work perfectly.
If anyone has anything to add to this thread, that's great. This is mainly to see whether or not the ROM devs here can actually fix such a thing, or if it's something lower level. Some input from the ROM devs would be great.
If mods do not think this is the proper place for this topic, please feel free to move it.

OK...I see what you talking about now...it's the embedded re-direct adds that aren't showing up for you...correct ?

No. If you reload the page, or back out of that one and go to another, it will randomly not work. Not the top GIF one, but all the small GIFs that are supposed to be animated.
Some other people were complaining of this same issue. It's hit/miss and very random.
I have to agree. When scrolling around a large image in the browser, it starts resizing randomly. I also have not been able to get any animated gifs to work in the browser.
i noticed that when scrolling up/down a page with large images, the stock browser reformats the text & breaks up images so part of the text & image looks smaller while the rest is original size. when i finish scrolling, the text & images are reformatted correctly. it's not a big deal to me. animated gifs that don't animate aren't a big loss to me either, i find them annoying

I'm confused. As soon as I load up a reply page and click in the area to type, the "cursor" goes way up the page and is basically impossible for me to type. I have to scroll up and as soon as I enter one letter, the screen goes way back down the blank area, and I have to rinse/repeat. For each letter.

[Q] Editing a flipclock?

Hey, I was wanting to edit an application posted by a member here on XDA. It is a flip clock that is actually animated, but isn't designed to look like the flipclock found in Sense UI. I stumbled upon an application called "Better alarm clock pro" which has a flipclock built into it, which looks exactly like the one from sense. Upon decompiling the .apk files, I went to the /res/drawable folder and found all of the images contain in both applications, however they weren't what I was looking for, I could only find the numbers of the clocks, and the white background of the clock, no flipping animations were there. Could anyone help me out here? Could it be that the animations are contained in .xml files? will post a screenshot of the inside of the apks in the second post.
EDIT: i thought maybe it was an issue with the flip clock in better alarm clcok pro not being an actual widget, just part of the app, so I downloaded the Desire Flip Clock port and checked out res/drawable/ but still no dice, just the nuimbers and the clock background. please, I need some help asap

If I'm following you on this, you want to hack animation routines out of one app and add them to another that never had them? I don't think it's going to happen unless you've got the source code to both, and even then, it'd be tough.
Yep animations arent files per say but code defining how something has a 2d or 3d transformation applied. The algorithm used to do these transformations can be edited but you will need to decompile or have the src

Google Now background as dynamic wallpaper?

I just though the Google Now backgrounds might make a nice dynamic background for my N7.
Does anyone know if anyone has done this?
I use paperland but I find animated backgrounds to be a bit laggy on the N7 so the GNow one might be a nice compromise.
I know blackbear has a gnex and has done this. Not sure if it was dynamic. I think so. I came across his g+ page and saw that he did it a few weeks ago.
I found this site, which appears to have everything I need to make it happen
http://mycolorscreen.com/2012/08/10/google-now-live-2/
I went there and downloaded the wallpapers and they aren't very clear they look upscaled. I really hope someone can vector those images and turn that into a functional live wallpaper, that would be outstanding. I'd rather not have to install some other apps to manage my wallpapers.
I was in London at the weekend and the top of the google now page was London themed.
