I have an idea that I think a lot of people would find useful. It is to create an app that stays on the bottom of the screen throughout Android that will utilize the various hardware keys. IE: Menu, Back, Power, Volume, etc. Ideally it would be customizable, like where to place them within the bottom "taskbar". This would enable users to utilize the touch screen for all aspects of Android, rather than relying on hardware keys. I'm not a programmer so I wouldn't even know where to start but would someone want to take that on? Sound like a good idea?

Hi All
I've been looking in to locking down an Athena and taking control / disabling all the hardware buttons. I can disable most of them in Start->Settings->Buttons. The ones I am having particular trouble with are the OK and Windows buttons to the left of the screen. I have trawled the registry and am yet to come up any answers on how to do this. Does anyone know where the registry keys may exist to do this?
Cheers

I'm curious why you would want to take away such a useful things away. Currently I use all the hardware button and wish there are more available. I use it for things such as changing SIP, rotate screen, start IGO, and control myp3 (such as volume up, volume down, next song, previous song, blank out screen, bring up the playlist, pause, unpause. This is while the device remains inside my belt pouch). The ok button is extremely useful in doing things such as hiding the phone application after use. Similarly if you're using program such as VITO fun contact, you could hide it after use without having to exit this extremely memory tiny application and able to instantly access your contact again anytime. Why would you want to disable all these useful features?
AEBPlus free version will disable all buttons
http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php
But I agree, unless you're developing an app that comandeers the buttons, why reduce functionality? You can lock the buttons while the unit is off. ???
Anybody know know to turn off the LED on the hardware buttion like Start, OK, and IE.
Any kind of registry setting that will turn off that light on those button?

I suppose he just wants to turn off the light of the buttons to gain some more battery time, not to disable their use. Though I doubt you would gain so much by disabling the leds.
I noticed a gain in battery time when I disabled the blinking LEDs, but they blink all the time unlike the button LEDs which are only on sporadically. So I agree that disabling the button LEDs won't gain you anything.
I just think that the LED or the light is annoying. I didn't mean to disable the function.
The light around the joystick is fine. So any solution ??

I don't think the keyboard has backlight. There is no light at all as I know....So this is not an option.
I've come across some situations where I'm at a loss on how to navigate without hardware keys. For example selecting bookmarks to edit on the Internet tab after displaying all bookmarks. Am I missing something?
I usually try one of the following:
Click and hold - depends on applications, you might see pop up window that lets you delete, or edit the item just selected.
Click, move away while keeping the finger in contact with the screen to avoid firing up that item. Depends on application, sometimes this start to highlight more than the item that I want. Then I move my finger back to the first item to result in the selection of only that item.
Lack of hardware keys especially the D-pad is the worst thing in Touch HD
Regards,
Carty..
I either use as said the click and hold option or bring up the keyboard as that has arrows built in. Not really had a prob so far.

I'm startig to nearly agree with this statement, i haven't missed the Dpad yet or any extra hardware keys but this device is living on the edge not having a dpad or hardware keys and also not supporting multi touch.
I think that a few months down the line the lack of multi touch support might become an issue!
Like i said before, so far i really haven't missed the Dpad, I think the HD does prove WM can be soley touch operated.
Been searching a little, but couldn't really find what I was looking for.
I'm looking for an app that would let me rebind the hardware buttons on my x8. A bit more specifically, something that would only remap buttons while screen is off, so I don't lose any functionality while screen is on.
The purpose of this would be to allow me to use hardware buttons to control music. Thinking menu/back keys for skipping tracks and camera key for pause. Not like the menu/back buttons do anything when screen is off anyways.
Optionally, long-press of volume keys for skipping tracks if menu/back is a no-go.
Not asking for anyone to write this app, just wondering if anyones been down the same street and found something usable
Other than creating your own app/hack, 'Tasker' may be able to help you out. I'm not sure if want you want to do is achievable with 'Tasker', but it's worth a shot.
Will you love the hardware keys or Virtual keys(Galaxy Nexus)
I love virtual Keys
Desition here was quite hard, because both have their pros and cons, for example oftware keys eat up your screen space and since SGSIII will use amoled screen signs on buttons would burn in to the screen and we would have burned in virtual buttons while playing games for example...on the other hand HW buttons make bottom bezel larger, and they are not suggested from google on ICS....
....if I pull line here, i dont actually care...Why not?
Since samsung already rumored that desition was very hard, i guess HW buttons will have same functionality as software buttons, so it seems that we wont have "cool" software buttons, but we will have more free space on screen
I love s/w keys than h/w keys
Actually when we watch videos and slideshow it will hide automatically
Very easier to use.
I love s/w keys in galaxy nexus
I like virtual keys on my tablet
When I flashed Gummy on my D2, i enabled the virtual keys and always ended up sliding and hitting the home button, so even though it doesn't bother me, i like both but used to hardware; i just like how you can edit the virtual keys
Definitely Software keys!
1. Allows for maximum screen size within a smaller phone shell
2. When the keys are not needed, we will get more screen real estate
3. With roms, we will be able to choose what buttons we want. Menu, search, recent apps, etc.
HW button more prefer for S3
Of coz hw button so that i may avoid accidentally push button like home button as ive ever experienced with gnex.....
I love the soft keys of my Galaxy Nexus. They change direction when the screen orientation changes. They eat up screen space, that's why I made them tiny and almost transparent with the Codename Android rom.
I love the extra screen space, I feel like I upgraded my device to one with a bigger screen. The Navigation Bar is now about the size of the status bar, and I almost never miss the buttons with my finger.
i hate virtual keys.eats inch from the display i dont want them at all

Same here. I really don't see the advantages to them aside from being customizable. But what can you really add aside from the standard 4 already being used on GB.

And the Nexus is what? Bezel-less? It has more than enough space below the screen for hardware buttons. They could even make the space smaller and there would still be room for hardware buttons.
The OONLY reason to go from Hardware buttons to Software ones (a la Gnex) is to cut down the bezel and overall phone size, which means you can have a larger screen-estate.
I know for a fact, this wont be happening.
So if Samsung chooses a Virtual or Hardware buttons the overall size will be the same.
But then, why give up the tactile satisfaction of hardware keys?
No reason !!
I've simply handed my device to many people, lets say after a Youtube clip loaded, and so many times they grab the Capacitive "Back" button which means the whole video must load all over again. This is particularly annoying when you have bad reception/slow connection.
So Samsung, make all 3 hardware buttons (stylish, slim, clicky etc) or Shave off that bezel so that the screen gets larger without the phone getting larger. Ball's in your court

You know the sides like the outer edge the smooth part on the outer edge or like on a watch the.ring surrounding the watfh none of that

I prefer capacitive keys if it include the dedicated menu key. Otherwise give me virtual keys so I can mod one in there.
I still don't trust that menu works right in all apps with ICS so I prefer to have one in all cases.
Definitely virtual keys. Don't really like the white glow of my SGSII's hardware keys.
No more hardware key, please! I couldn't stand the feedback of GS2 hw key. It's okay at first, but when time goes by the feedback got worse and eventually I was able to hear a tiny clicking sounds when pressing it. Such a fragile spot of an expensive device.
I like virtual keys. I can set up its count, color, etc. Small but nice feature.
if the phone doesnt have virtual buttons i will surely go for galaxy nexus
1. Get a phone with capacitive or virtual buttons
2. Install Temple Run
3. Play the game and swipe down
4. Accidentally hit home button
5. ???
6. Profit!
Or something like that. I absolutely hate my Huawei Ideos X5s capacitive home button. So I'd like to have capacitive multitask-button, hw home button and capacitive back-button. I'll buy it either way. I've been missing Samsung so much after I swapped my SGS2 to Omnia W and then ended up using my backup phone (Huawei) until SGS3 comes.
I had a huawei x3 with soft keys. Total crap! Too many accidental clicks.
Hardware home Button + menu key + back key

I have used SGS and SGS2. I am used to hardware keys so I would love to have it. I can make practical use of home key, like taking pictures or putting whatever shortcut I want. I am sure samsung will stick to the hardware keys.
