Any Questions? - Epic 4G General

I've got an Epic 4G waiting for me when I get home today. If anyone has any questions or requests Ill be more than happy to answer them!

...is it epic?

What color is the notification light on the phone? is it one color or can is do pretty much any color under the rainbow, or just a few? BGR is the only source I saw officially state that the notification light is in fact a notification light and they only said that it is red.

If you wouldn't mind loading some apps on SD card testing their open/close response.

I'm also interested in the notification light.

Wouldn't he need Froyo for that?

It looks like there is a system app called GPSSetup. Can you run that? What does it do?

Please post some videos of it in action. Doing some benchmark test from popular apps would be nice too

Will do. Two and a half hours from home!

natually you need to do some real world testing of the GPS to see if it actually works and is accurate. Take a drive somewhere with google maps loaded up and see how well and accurate the GPS please

Just driving around is a pretty unrevealing test. If you are going to field-test the GPS, please use a little more rigor than that: Install and use My Tracks to capture several tracks on complex driving courses with stops, turns, and fast curves. Also some walking courses. You can upload the results to Google My Maps and post the links for others to peruse.
Then use GPS Test and report the results being shown when getting an outdoor fix (number of satellites seen, used; reported accuracy; SNR levels for satellites used, time to first fix.)

Alright gang.
First tests:
1.) Notification light - red.
Can't test any other colors. Don't know if it can change.
2.) Quadrant benchmark - 960. I/O score improves, 3D, etc. Most improved by a little. I/O a lot.
Here's my benchmarks: http://briefmobile.com/samsung-epic-4g-benchmarked
3.) GPS -- worked well with initial test. Found me in my court outside. Will do more testing later.
4.) Speed of the phone - unrivaled. Possibly the fastest, baddest Android-powered device yet. I own a Captivate, and this thing BLOWS the Captivate out of the water.
When I apply the EXT2 lag fix on Captivate, it brings Captivate up to par with the Epic 4G. But, Epic is fast right out of the box. Boot up times are nice and fast. No ten minutes of loading crap.
Sidenote: Wish I had the Epic drivers. I have no way of connecting this thing to my PC. Of course the driver site isn't up yet. The phone's not out for ten more days!

FM Radio useable?
What version of BT?
Anyway you can try out vid out?

Any way you could post a link to a kernel dump?

Can't run this without any drivers to connect...
Bluetooth - 3.0 like all Galaxy S devices.
FM radio - no way to test... I'm assuming it's disabled like the Captivate. No radio application.
TV out - I'll see if I can test it later today... but I don't think I have the right cords.

You should be able to run this from connectbot and your pc should see the sd card without pc drivers.

Yes, the version of TouchWiz is slightly different. Not any better or worse necessarily. Just a different version.
Samsung has told me previously that the TouchWiz would be updated with the Android 2.2 rollout. But, all of the Galaxy S line devices will be receiving updated skins with 2.2. A few changes coming to every one.

I have a few questions. First I'd like to know if the Epic 4G has video out like on the other Galaxy S variants through composite cables via the 3.5mm jack, and HDMI through the micro USB port? Thanks in advance

I can still choose whether I get the Nexus S or the Atrix; a friend in the US buys it tomorrow for me. I was done & dusted on getting the Nexus S (coming from an un-rooted Nexus One) until I took a final look on those specs of the Atrix again. That phone just looks too good on paper to not be good!
Guys, more updates please! Help a guy make up his mind..

Apps opening? - Fastest phone I've own yet...
Lag? - yes. Going from an app like Angry birds to home screen, there's an initial lag. It's annoying. Must be Blurrrrr.
Camera? - Disappointed...iPhone 4 is definitely better.
Let's just say I'm ready to install a custom Rom without all the bloatware and lameBlur. Blur kills the phones IMO.
Not many phones can beat the iphone 4 camera appart from Nokia, but is the camera on the Atrix better than the HTC Desire or nexus s.
Cheers.

Go back to the Nexus S boards then rather than trolling here. You clearly don't have the phone, any anything you state is a matter of opinion, and clearly jealousy since you're on our boards and not yours.
My atrix is fast. I had someinitial lag in the app drawer while using Launcher Pro but it is gone now.

Came from Nexus One. Good upgrade.
Confirmed that with proper account provisioning, unlimited 4G data for $30, and the "phone" apn, upload is either capped by AT&T or HSUPA is disabled on the hardware by AT&T. Tethering plan may increase upload speed but I got no confirmation in this yet.
Otherwise it's an excellent upgrade from the N1.

The phone works great, haven't had any lag at all so far. Only been playing on it for 4 hours though! Launcher Pro works great, I have the 3D settings on and the animations don't lag whatsoever. No complaints with the screen. Only thing that sucks is my Worms game isn't working Something about being an unsupported device.
Man I see you trolling on a ton of threads here and as a Nexus S owner myself you really give us a bad name.
Sound like a jealous teenager hating the fact that someone else could have something better than you... drop it already. Go back to school, learn to read and write correctly.

Should note that if you look at the reviews out there, the N1 battery life is crap (compared to the Atrix). Also the Atrix (like most newer Android phones) has a proper multitouch screeen. So you'll notice way better typing input immediately.
I will admit.... it's nice that nucentury is at least starting to use SOME punctuation. Not enough, but it's still an improvement from the first post i've seen from him in his other thread.
Besides.... who would even take the advice of someone who thinks that a gyroscope makes a phone that much better than any other device when it comes to gaming? A gyroscope has the same exact flaw as Microsoft Kinect. It's only logical to be used for a certain genre of games. Anything outside those genres, and it's just a useless addition to the phone.
Everything for me is great thus far. Phone is very snappy using LauncherPro also using Beautiful widgets.
Typing is spot on. Nice screen resolution. I would say the phone is overall faster than the Captivate and Inspire.

Andy Rubin's Xoom prototype

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/14/...-posted?icid=sphere_blogsmith_inpage_engadget
I watched this video back in December when it was released, didn't think much of it recently but had a look at it again this morning to see if it was a Xoom prototype. From what I can tell, it is. What I found most interesting is the app tray fly-in smoothness.
Obviously, this was a development unit shown 4 months before the actual release, so it is not terribly relevant to compare my Xoom with his, but I can't help but wonder why the app tray fly-in looks so much smoother on an early device than it does on a production- ready model (albeit not fully polished). Couple of possibilities:
1. The smoothness is simply a result of the video quality, and a higher rez version on a larger screen may allow me to see the fly-in is as chopp as what I've noticed on production models.
2. Rubin's prototype is super-overclocked and thoroughly optimized to be as smooth as possible in order to not look clunky during its first public appearance.
3. This prototype is working in a non-mobile environment, without any added services used by carrier networks. No use by 3g chip and no background services to support data or voice connectivitt.
Thoughts?

Oh Christ Jesus that SO doesn't matter! Have you ever run "ps" or "logcat" while doing that?!
I have 96 apps loaded on my device. I suspect that as you run thru the screens, it's gotta render each icon in-place. I don't believe for a minute that's going to be fast every time.
I've had co-workers "rate" my Xoom by how quickly the icons swipe in the App Screen, and I look at them like they're ****in' crazy. NEVER MIND the fact that the tablet is fast as hell and does 95% of what I want it to well, they say "it doesn't swipe quickly".
WGAS?!!

And therin lays the reason apple is so sucsesful. They would by far reduce features and only include features that are refined and work than throw everything in, and even give the possibility to developers to affect the experiance.
So in Android you can change your keyboard, you can edit an MP3 with multiple software and then use it as a ring tone ...
in the iPhone ... you cant

You must be doing something wrong. Mine only gets slow when I'm developing over ADB (I think it is a bug, actually..) and when I'm using flash sometimes. A reboot fixes the temporary slowness without fail. I might just be lucky and have a nice unit, since my linpack score is in the top 50 after using the stock kernel OC'd to 1.5 GHz.
But I'm sick of seeing this M of yours attached to whiney posts all over these forums. Please, either figure out how to fix your DEVELOPER TABLET or go complain in some NON-DEVELOPER forums where some lucky CONSUMERS might actually get some value out of the dribble you type.
Better yet, return your Xoom, it is clearly not the right tablet for you.

1 - there's a lot of JS on certain sites' in their text boxes (presumably for advanced editing/composition features). You'll also notice on those "slow" sites that there's no keyboard autocorrect popups, either 'cause all input is character-at-a-time
2 - that's what you base "slow" on? You sound like my co-workers and their "it's slow 'cause the apps don't scroll as fast as an iPad" crapola.
(Damn, I fed the troll ...! )

What's funny is for the most part the Xoom browser scrolls faster than the iPad's browser. Even the iPad 2 has the checkerboarding everywhere when you scroll.

Just got my Nexus S ATT. My thoughts.

Coming from HTC Inspire btw.
Size-Build is awesome imo, perfect screen size, nice and lightweight and does not feel cheap imo.
Yea its superamoled but wtf at the yellowish tint....why did they do this?? My Captivate looked better and this is one of the main selling points for me, is there anything we can do to get it back to the other color temperature? Seriously....
Tried the camera a bit, not impressive at all, neither was the inspire so eh whatever.
Everything is FAST! I love it!
Stock Android!!! Woooh! No Blocking of Apps! Woooh!
Wifi seems a bit slow, it started doing a restore off the bat and downloading all my apps from the inspire and even the background! wow! Really cool feature that I had no Idea about, but some apps installed and then I kept getting a bunch of errors saying "insufficient memory" I guess I gotta do them one by one...
Thats pretty much it, Im satisfied but the screen tint is kinda leaving a bad taste in my mouth, the SuperLCD seemed more sharp and brighter then this and the whites were WHITE and the blacks werent too shabby either, dunno wtf is going on as the Screen on my old captivate was great and I loved it, this is eh...
Really hoping I didnt make the wrong choice here, the Xperia arc I had my eyes on and the only thing it didnt have was a FFC and I can live without it, beyond that I like the looks, bigger screen, lighter weight, on the arc better and sony unlocked the bootloader on their new devices so updates will come regardless, way better camera, I just dont know about this whole screen thing....
i just got mine today, so thought i'd chime in too.
build quality: not cheap imo, the ergonomics dept should pat themselves on the back. feels just right
doesn't feel laggy
sensors problem. compass seems a bit off, and the best gps lock i've had is 10m error after about 60s. i stood outside and waited, no lock. resorted to downloading gps status and downloaded the additional gps data. this seems to be the only way it's locked on. compared to a desire, this is hella slow and crappy for gps.
camera quality, i think for a phone it's good enough. for the ffc, so it's vga, but at what resolution does skype mobile use? what's that? it's not working? oh well. i think vga is fine for video calls. anything else is just additional cost.
about to test with music and haven't put a sim in yet to test the phone.
i bought it for development, so i'm now going to start messing about with it, but the phone feels nice and zippy, but disappointed with the sensors (will be testing outside tomorrow) as i'm looking to do a lot of augmented reality dev.

no, i don't have a tint at all - i have a 9020. and no tint. i manually upgraded to 2.3.2 - too scared to update to 2.3.3 yet. i don't have a sim in it, so the ota wasn't registering.

I think we should close this till it is released and leave the pre-reviews to the pros.

Anything you guys would like to be included in a video review of the retail unit? Please don't come up with ridiculous requests like drop test or hammer test.

Full details about everything in the settings menu and what they do?
I saw other videos breeze through the settings and there were dozens of interesting things that caught my eye.
Maybe the extras in the camera settings as well?

A proper test of S Voice. Please don't ask it for the weather in London
Show the total boot time for a hard/soft boot.
What's new in TouchWiz, and an overview of the software features on the phone for those who are new to TW
Testing the radio strength (3g/voice/gps/wifi) in various settings
How is the memory partitioned, how much is available

I'd love to know about the following
Boot time
About different colors in notification led
Data partition size
Smart stay at various lighting conditions
Launcher customization like grid size etc
Brief details of touch gestures
Headsets quality
Some info about how shaky is the recorded video
I know some of these will be already on your list

S voice already passed the woodchuck test, I would like to see some more of that kind and 780 mb is available user memory.

My List!
@Intratech: Do you already have a retail unit of GS3? Lucky guy
My list (maybe some options repeated in previous posts):
+ How does the phone feel in-hand? Any particular build issues? Some previews mentioned that the phone looks much better than in press photos. Example here
+ Browser performance, also how is Chrome performance.
+ TW performance. Any slowdown or issues?
+ Details on gestures. I know that there are a ton of gestures, do they work properly?
+ Screen comparison to GS2. Sunlight visibility.
+ Please upload photos in full resolution under various lighting conditions. Same for short video samples. Maybe you could upload that in google drive.
+ Social tag feature in camera/gallery. I am really interested to know how well this works. They can create wonderful commercial with this feature.
+ AllShare Play (I think it works like iCloud). Samsung uploaded a video about that feature here
+ Audio/Video player settings and performance. I noticed that the video gallery shows the previews of all videos stored. Does it impact the performance of the device while showing previews of multiple video at same time?
+ Check various codec it supports.
+ USB OTG and PS3 controller demo.
+ Camera settings. I think we need 2 devices to check buddy share.
+ S Beam will also need 2 devices. Does normal Android Beam work with GNex?
+ If you are getting the AllShare Cast dongle, please check if I can play a video on the TV while doing something else on the phone. How does pop-up play work with the AllShare dongle?
+ Try weird questions in the S Voice. Maybe also some geography/history questions. Shoot some trivia questions. Try launching applications with S Voice. Can it be used to type messages/email?
+ GPS/GLONASS performance. WiFi strength.
+ Difference between 4 colour/screen modes.
+ Gaming performance projected to a HDTV.
+ Background applications running after a fresh reboot.
No I don't have a retail unit as yet. I will get it once it's released to retail

First impressions

Having flashed and played around with Ubuntu on my N4 I have found that it looks good but, as you would expect from the sort of build, that it is barely usable.
The browser app only produces a white screen and most things are generally broken, to be honest, I'm not in the least bit surprised seeing as it's a dev build but it would be nice if things worked a bit better.
I also noticed there was no way of accessing settings of any sort, aside from network settings. This may well be an oversight on my part but I did dig quite a bit.
I have not had a chance to play with the SDK as I'm on windows and can't find anyway to install/use it (and I really can't be bothered) so I have no comments on that.
From what I could tell, performance was pretty good, but that may just be the N4, and I noticed no huge drain in battery when I restored my CM10 backup, aside from what you'd expect from a backup, flash and restore.
I couldn't figure out how to use the docking mode (nor do I know if it's even in this version) so I also cannot comment on that.
However, I think I will be sticking to CM10 for now and I'll wait for a more usable version to come out before I begin to use Ubuntu more often.
How has everyone else found it?

Looks good
I installed Ubuntu on my galaxy nexus and while it does look good, it is very laggy and slow to respond to touch commands. Browser works fine but very slowly. I too did not find any "settings" menu or options. The camera works just fine and so does the gallery. Power button does the usual lock/unlock action, but the volume buttons seem to do nothing. Haven't heard any sounds on the device either. Will keep exploring the OS but so far, it really does feel like a preview, as Canonical has described.
Calls and sms work, and so does wifi. When i plugged in the headset during a call however, it did not work at all.
It is available for the Verizon s3 on RootzWiki just Google it.

One other thing I noticed when I was on my commute to school was that I couldn't turn off wifi, which did not help my battery, I do still really like the ui and I'm sure that it will be really good when it is finished

is it really that hard to search for this info using Google before you waste space in a thread?

Yeah the browser work fine when I tried it, just really slowly.

Tried it on my nexus 7, the device was lagging almost constantly. I do like the UI itself though, it looks quite refined and easy on the eyes, much like desktop Ubuntu.

You should feel stupid as **** because it is out, I definitely had it on my GS3 earlier today. Calm down you asswipe and give people a break before making yourself look bad.

The browser worked for me, and I'm on a galaxy nexus.
You can access volume controls and brightness controls the same way you can network (note brightness is under battery indicator). There is no way to set date and time except from command line via adb or ssh. Out of curiosity what other settings would others like to access?
For the SDK, although I can't use QtCreator I am able to edit and compile code from a Windows 7 computer on the phone itself, using ssh with vim qmake, and even run some GUI programs using an X server, like gedit and meld.
Docking mode is unavailable, as far as I can tell. It probably will not be available until Mir is released, since I think the rootless X is being worked on for Mir.
I think Ubuntu Touch has a lot of potential.
Is this supported by all phone?
