Trouble flashing new ROM - Please Help! - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hello All,
I have been trying for the past few hours to root my HTC Magic 32B (Vodafone UK) and flash Cyanogen to get me some android 2.2!
The phone was on Android 1.6 before i started the process. I have since managed to roll it back to the vulnerable 1.5 version using a goldcard and sapping.zip
I have also managed to push RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H onto the phone.
Now every time i wipe and then flash any of the cyanogen ROMs using the recovery mode, it hangs at the Vodafone screen when booting. Now I had a look around and there were suggestions of trying a different ROM. I tried this and get the same result every time. I have installed 4 different versions of Cyanogen as well as numerous other ROMS.
An interesting point, I have a magic 32b and yet when trying to push the 'G' version of the recovery-RA file, the phone does not turn up under 'adb devices' but when pushing the H version, the phone responds as it should and loads the correct recovery file. I have tried both 32A and 32B ROMs to no avail they both still lock up at the Vodafone splash screen
I can restore to 1.5 without any problems, but I dont want to be stuck on this version of Android
A little info about the phone:
Firmware version: 1.5
Build Number: 2.16.151.1 146733 CL#31685 test-keys

Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

There is guide on wiki.cyanogen you must be ona 1.5 version just read whole guide and it will be a success

If you have RA -h recovery working use it to flash hboot 1.33.2009
Then boot into fastboot and issue
Code:
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
Here you can either boot onto recovery and flash the ebi1 version of cm. (Yes historical for 32a but seems your newer rom is using the 32a radio)
Or install a 2.x radio via fastboot (you must not flash it from recovery or you will brick your phone)
Last I checked cm wiki deals with 32a radios on 32b devices badly

1) You see the last "H" in the first line of your info?
That means you need to use H-recovery and not G-recovery!!!
First problem solved....
2) You see the radio version 3.22.20.17?
Thats is only for 32A boards.. be lucky that you did not brick your device..
You need this radio and only this radio: 2.22.19.26I
But there is something wrong with combination of the info you wrote..
All 32B devices have G as the last letter in the first line of thire spl..
Are you sure that what you wrote is correct?
To solve this, flash back your stock version... use RUU or whatever... No sappimg or goldcard...
Just bring back the phone to where is was when you got it from the shop.
Then follow this guide made by me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756942
it will root you device in 5 mins... and for 5 min extra you get custom recovery and engineer spl( <-optionel)... FULL CONTROL OF DEVICE, the right way!

This is FUD .. thats why its not bricked.
3.x = EBI1 (The -h recovery [magic] and -r recovery [dream*] is EBI1)
2.x = EBI0 (The -g recovery [magic] and default recovery [dream*] is EBI0)
* Please don't install the dream recovery on the magic it won't work its missing a config file for sapphire
both magic 32a/32b can run both
HOWEVER you must have the correct kernel to boot the device and if you have a 3.x radio and flash a radio from recovery you will brick since your current recovery can't boot after the flash.
Easiest is as I said install the engineering SPL that also supports both radios and fastboot yourself a stable system.
(the only reason its not booting with the EBI1 magic32a rom now is probably its not being properly wiped)
As far as using fastboot to restore a 2.x radio and -G recovery:
32A devices (ignoring the fender for the moment) will not be able to use all their memory on a 2.x radio
32B devices run the same on both radios; however more roms assume you have a 2.x radio.

If you go to cyanogens website, the EBI1 kernel should be available in the downloads. Just reflash the 5.0.8.zip, then flash the EBI1.zip, and then GAPPS.

Confusion of 32A or 32B while rooting HTC Magic

Dear users,
I wanted to root HTC Magic with the following helpful tutorial.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/
However, I faced a problem about the motherboard version. When I check the motherboard version as tutorial suggested, I saw that it is 32B. However, Recovery Flasher app claims that it is EBI1/32A and it does not allow to flash the recovery image of 32B.
On the other hand, when I checked /proc/meminfo file, it says that
MemTotal: 99708 kB
MemFree: 12068 kB
which is 32B as suggested by Amon_Ra
So, I am confused. Could you please tell me which recovery image should I use? A small background information, I bricked the phone before with rooting procedure by the same reason and gave it back and got it refurbished. So, I am not sure but the motherboard information recorded somewhere else may mislead the Recovery Flasher application.
Thank you,
Omer
Which version of the recovery you should use is dictated by the version of your radio, not motherboard.
2.xx.xx.xx - G version
3.22.xx.xx - H version
hope it helps!
Thank you for the reply. I checked the radio version and it was 3.22.xx.xx. So, I tried the HTC version. However; The recovery manager didn't let me flash with this image. I think, I have the same situation as this post has
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=680793
But, I didn't yet root my device.
Thank you,
Omer
What exactly spl do you have?
Turn off, then turn on by pressing Back + Power, post first 5 strings.
If you have 1.33.2010 S-OFF you can revert back to radio 2.22.XX.XX

Since you have s-off already, just download 1.33.2005 SPL and do

and
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Wrong forum by the way dude
But before flashing SPL, shouldn't I flash radio? Sorry to ask newbie questions but I am really lost and I don't want to brick the device.
By the way, My device is HTC Sapphire aka HTC Magic. That's why; I wrote in here. Is it wrong?
Thanks.

You have 2 methods to restore 32B radio and hboot and get ability to flash 32B-roms
Method 1.
As you wrote - you have S-OFF, so fastboot commands are allowed
You can simply run
Code:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot flash hboot hboot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot reboot-bootloader
where:
radio.img - radio 2.22.19.26I
http://member.america.htc.com/download/RomCode/ADP/GIO/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip?
Unpack it from archive

http://rapidshare.com/files/247838950/update.Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2005-signed.zip
Unpack it from archive
recovery.img - Amon_RA Sapphire recovery 1.6.2 G version
Important: flash radio then hboot. Don't reboot after flashing only radio.
Method 2. You can use rom.nbh from official update for 32B Magics:
create goldcard
unpack rom.nbh and rename to sappimg.nbh, copy it to goldcard
flash in hboot-mode (VolumeDown + Power)
You will get 1.33.0007 perfected SPL, so you must root device next
But one thing... you have S-OFF - may be you have engineering device - so you can use fastboot commans always - it makes flash-process very easy)
5 thank you for the instructions. This is what i was looking for. If any other experienced user confirms it might work, i would like to take the risks and do the instructions then share the results.
Experienced users, what do you think?

Go for it.
I took the encouragement and gave the first command and unfortunately got this error. I guess, this is not engineering device :/

S-OFF - it is hboot without security. It means, that everyone can use fastboot commands without any warnings.
Magics have S-OFF, if it developer or engineering device OR if hboot patched by someone
There are some patched (engineering) hboots for Magics, but not for [MT3G 1.2]
In manual to root patched hboot is using, but if you stay with it - touchscreen does not work. Don't know why.
Thanks 5. I believe I'm good now, just have to be patient and await the arrival of new ROMS for my MT3G 1.2
Appreciate all your assistance in helping understand better about my phone.

[Q] How to change my radio back without bricking

Evening all,
I have a magic 32b which i rooted last week (somehow? haha)
Now, the problem is, I have a 32a radio on my 32b. With this, I am struggling to change the rom outside of the cyanogenmod which i have on at the moment. I would like to, therefore, change my radio to a 32b version (2.22.x or whatever it is)
I have read that this will improve my phones performance too as mine is a little laggy atm
I was told i would need to load it from fastboot to save bricking it, is this true?
A little info about my phone:

Many thanks for any help provided
I forgot to mention, its a Vodafone UK HTC Magic
Thanks again
1) it will not do anything about lag**
2) it will improve compatibility with most g1 roms.. since sometimes the ebi1 kernel is harder to find.
3) yes you need an engineering spl and to use fastboot to flash both a 2.x radio and -g recovery
For the spl flash 1.33.2009 or 1.33.2010 from your current -h recovery
To get the radio download a 2.x radio update.zip, unzip it and use fastboot to flash the radio.img inside the zip file.
**some roms may have a better default configuration than cm thus may feel faster out of the box.. but if configured correctly to your needs cm is fast.
I think follow these steps, because full rom includes radio version on it
1. Create gold card.
2. Download original fw 1.5 for 32B (file saphm.img) and flash it with recovery mode.
3. Comeback to newer rom as you like by nandroid. Radio version will not be effected.
okay so i updated the SPL and flashed the new radio. Now, it will only boot to a G recovery, despite being with an H SPL. the H version will not boot, sticks on the vodafone splash screen.
I have this radio installed: 2.22.19.26I taken from /code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/Radio_Update
any advice?? please?
okay, got it working with the G recovery, just cant seem to get the newest version of cyanogenmod 6.0! just keep getting the cyanogenmod boot splash playing over and over. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

you probably just need to wipe..
enter fastboot and run either:
A Full wipe: (will remove you use data)
Code:
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
(optional if you had the same version of CM prior to re-flashing the radio restore the nandroid image now before re-flashing this will hopefully restore your userdata.. if you do this remember to wipe dalvik cache after restoring)
Then return to the -G recovery and flash the CM-6 update.zip and the correct version of the gapps
If this doesn't solve it we will need a logcat
Hi buddy,
that didnt work. where/when/how do you want me to use the logcat?
Thanks again
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone else had any advice?
Many Thanks

Flashed 32B radio on 32A, Now showing as 32B in Fastboot, No Recovery

I have a T-Mobile branded MT3G 1.2 that I flashed today's CM nightly onto and the screen got the green tint issue. I looked into it and read I need to flash pershoot's kernal to fix it, but i needed the new radio (I had the 2.22 and all the 32A kernels said they were for 3.22).
I tried to fastboot the 32A radio, but got an error because it was a perfected SPL (I think thats why, at least), so I tried to flash an ENG SPL for 32A, using the files for reverting back from 6.35.07 radio to 3.22 for the 32A from gadget-space.com I flashed the HBOOT.zip using RomManager, and when I rebooted, the phone did not get past the splash screen. Couldn't boot into recovery but fastboot works.
now it's showing this in the fastboot info:

No matter what HBOOT I flash, i can't get it to change back to showing 32A. Also I've tried reflashing Amon Ra's Recovery and still can't get back into there.
Any ideas on how to get this phone working again?
I did the same thing as you trying to install the official T-mobile Froyo OTA ported for the 32A. After flashing the radio and spl I could no longer get the phone to boot or go into recovery. The only thing I could do was fastboot. After trying half a dozen SAPPIMG.zip files I managed to find the correct one. All I had to do was put the SAPPIMG.zip onto the sd card, put it in my phone, fastboot to hboot and it should unzip the SAPPIMG and install on your phone. Not sure if this will work for you but it's worth a shot.
found the unrooted imgboot.zip, flashed it and re-rooted with androoter, now all is well.
Now that I have this back to a working phone, should i update the radio?
I have no idea but now that I'm back to stock 1.6 I think I'm just gonna wait for the T-Mobile official OTA Froyo for the 32A. It should be out fairly soon and it'll be better than any 2.2 rom you'll find online since it was designed specifically for the 32A and not ported over or anything.
Where did you find the unrooted img.zip i been looking all over the net?

Well... you need a compatible spl before you can change the spl/radio combo.
To do that, i need your software version... run this code:
Code:

We can take from there :0)
Just don't flash or mess around your OS... we may need it to flash a different misc partition to change the software version... more on that later

Are you actually flashing the recovery, or just booting it? Try fastboot flash instead of boot.
Also you have the 3.22 radio, so you have to either change it, or use an ebi1 kernel. I would recommended finding ezterrys guide to update to 2.22.28.25 radio and 1.33.0013d spl

Several issues there... your flashing an old version of ra for the 3.22 radio to the system partition. You need to do this:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
And you need the G version of amon_ra recovery.
and you need to get back to an eng spl to do that...
OK well it sounds like i'm am definitively doing this wrong.
There is so much information and so many threads of doing different things, how ever i did not find one that has a complete spoon fed step by step tutorial.

md5: 2e384ab42da375458fdb135063b7536b
This will verify your system can safely install the new radio and ask you to install it.
Note: please ensure you have a backup before flashing this radio sometimes is known for some wacky things on first boot until you can get into the system and verify the clock is set correctly.
HBOOT
The new 32b HBOOT is the one you have always been using 1.33.0013
I've more recently have made a hacked version 1.33.0013d primarily for the Dream to have a larger /system size; However currently I also recommend it for 32b magic/sapphire users due to its reduced restrictions on flashing NBH files, as well as access to fastboot erase.
Since I don't think there is any nbh file safe to flash on the fender/MT1.2 the benefits of installing 1.33.0013d seem minimal on your phone.. however for advanced users, it will unlock fastboot erase. (useful for swapping roms; however most people can just use Super Wipe)
If you do wish to update to this I have a special update.zip to migrate from 1.33.0013 -> 1.33.0013d
update-1_33_0013-to-1_33_0013d_S.zip

how do i flash these?
BTW i appreciate all you help and support and if i figure it out, I will put together a detailed set of instructions for others that encounter this specific issue.
You have to get an Eng spl. Probably by flashing a sappimg with one. I'm on my phone and am too lazy to find one for you.
After that just flash recovery, radio, and hboot like ezterrys thread says.
fastboot flash hboot hboot.img (1.33.0013 or 1.33.0013d hboot)
fastboot flash radio radio.img ( 2.22.27.08 or 2.22.28.25)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
I'm pretty sure those commands are right, but they are from memory and could be spelled wrong or be in the wrong order.

How does one tell if they have the ENG SPL?
Do i have to do it again or can i just flash the hboot and radio and recovery?
