[Q] SECONDARY CAMERA ON X10i - XPERIA X10 General

.,i want to access the secondary camera on my X10i ( R2BA026 ).. is there anyone whos has the application to access it.. if none, is there any trick!? i want to test it..

There is no second camera.

Sadly, there's no such thing as a secondary camera or video call camera on the X10. At first I couldn't believe it too, but trust me, that little black lens on the top right corner of your Rachael is a proximity sensor

there is a small square, camera look-alike on the top on my white X10i.. i think this is just the so called Proximity Sensor.. Anyways thanks ..

.,same here, so much sad for that.. i though at the first it's a camera..

give me 50$ i will split your phone in half. 10% chances it will work afterward and you can do video call with the screen and the camera facing you.

Lots of phones made now do not have that front camera - but what the heck - who was really using that video call at the time since it came out?? I really can't think of one time it was to any good! Only deaf people have a little use of it, since they can "talk" via sign language...
And now Apple has reinvented video calling with their facetime - oh well then the rest of the world (read: incl. USA) can have a go on that one...

I purchaised a lot of phone in previous years with secondary/video cam, but believe me I had never used it, not a single time :-o Have not even seen someone using it. Totally useless..

You would use it if you and your GF/WIFE is far away and require to fill that passion in the hole.
Of course, you also have to worry about whether your phone is being hacked and will share that video conference worldwide on youtube.

Well actually I have a gf in Thailand and at first I thought the X10 had a FF cam too. That was the deal breaker for me but when I found out that it doesn't have an FF cam, I got it anyways cuz I fell in love with the phone lol. Honestly, I don't think I would ever need that function on my X10 and plus...I keep all my secrets in my laptop XD

In Japan, all non-smartphones have secondary cameras.
In two years, how many video calls have I seen being made? One. How many times did I make a video call? None.
Video calls are more suited to laptops, not when you're walking around trying to get on a subway.

haha i agree. but i was planning to try it on x10 till i read this thread 0_0
i have my x10 for close to 4month and i didn't know is a Proximity Sensor. haha what a joke

I used video call once just to check how it actually works in my new phone. That was around three years ago. Never bother with it after that. It distract you when you're making a call...

Thanks for the post guys.. im little bit convinced now not to dream for a second camera, niether on my x10.. if all other smarphones that supports second/video call camera will work only with a wifu medium, tnen id rather use my loptap for video calling.. lol

Don't you guys check the specifications when you buy things?

Pure speculation.
You might have one but that doesn't mean you know everything about them. Guessing why HTC does certain things and then telling it as fact is just wrong.
I emailed about this and they said surveys said people didnt use video calling, i must admit, my phone has the feature, but its just so expensive to use.
Would have been nice though

I agree. It would've been nice. The only time I used video call was when I had free video calls. Besides being expensive, i don't see much benefit having video in a call.

Believe it or not, I use video call
My network operator (Telenor Serbia) applies same charge for both voice and video call, and also includes it in free traffic as a part of a contract. I myself am a frequent user of that feature because my job is 200km away from my hometown where my wife and kids are. Video call is the only way for me to see them almost every day. Apart from that (and occasional video surveillance by 3g cameras - our company has two of them installed) I almost never use video call. Main downside is a lag in conversation of approx. one second both ways which makes any serious conversation impossible. There's also a huge battery drain. So, it's quite understandable to me why most of people don't miss this feature on HD2.

YESSSSS

Yay guys, Our beloved HD2 beats the contenders in Gadget Show's test.

Considering how Apple biased these guys are, I think they must have been very impressed with the HD2. For me, the HD2 is the best phone available at the moment.

Also bearing in mind the review focused on two of the 'weaker' aspects of the HD2, the camera and text input, it just shows how good the HD2 really is (I personally think the camera is very good, up with my Ignito/Diamond if not better, and once I installed Swype - wow fantastic!)
I haven't had a single crash, no obvious issues with my 1.48 ROM + camera fix, totally happy so far

the region restricted video content has not been in place long. can't see the point of a site like others that restrict viewing to the UK where it airs anyway.
I always thought that the Gadget show was sponsored by Apple as they are so biased!
One thing though...Why didn't they include the Iphone as part of the tests?? surely that would have been a fair comparison....Well we all know that the Iphone would have been knocked off it's perch and they wouldn't want to show that!

The International version (Samsung Galaxy S) and Sprint Epic 4G has front cameras. The Captivate and Vibrant does not.
I honestly don't get all the hype about front cameras. Why? What's the point?
It's new, untouched technology. Just because Apple marketed it doesn't make it a good idea.
Give it a year. I'm sure the "Galaxy S 2" will have one. Doubt it'll be a standard by then anyways though.

Yeah, that's what I used to think until...
I have an iPhone 4 and an i9000 (both have front cameras). I was testing both phones at the same time. I was going to return the iPhone in my first 30 days because iOS4 just isn't up to Android standards in my book. I also have a Nexus One on T-Mo that I mostly use as a WiFi hotspot.
I'd played with FaceTime once with my only other friend to have an iPhone 4. He lives in Florida, I'm in California and we wanted to check it out. No big deal on the first test.
One day I was driving to work and got the clever idea to connect the iPhone to the WiFi hotspot on the Nexus One. I then called my friend in Florida with FaceTime on the iPhone 4 and it worked just great over 3G. (You can also jailbreak the iPhone and use 3G Unrestrictor to just do it directly over the phone).
I had the iPhone 4 in a dash mounted holder and it was so cool. My friend's face was there on the dash and we were like in the car together. I still focused on the road, of course, but I could glance and see his face like you would with someone in the car with you when appropriate.
At one point he even asked where I was and I just switched the camera from front to back with the onscreen button and he then saw out the road as if he were riding in the car with me. Then I switched back.
We both really thought the experience enhanced the quality of our conversation. I decided to keep the iPhone just because of that.
So, yes, it's a new idea, and not a lot of phones have it, but even though Apple's ahead of the curve on that one, once more phones make it that simple to be face to face when you want to, it's going to change everything.
Nothing wrong with wanting a front camera in my opinion; those who do just are a bit more visionary than those who don't care about it yet.

Btw, I don't really have any feelings about the need for a front-facing camera, but that anecdote about doing an iPhone "video-conference" on the road via N1 WiFi is pretty cool. That' be a great thing to do while traveling.
Great, texting while driving is bad enough, now having a video chat while driving, please God tell me you don't live anywhere near me.

Its not that new. I remember there was hard advertising in 2003 in UK when carrier 3 got the 3g. Apple is always "revolutionizing" technologies that already existed for a while.
For front camera would be great for occasional video over ip calls, such as skype, or what fring did before.

Its not new technology. Hell, landline phones had video capabilities 10+ years ago, it never took off because its a gimmic. Facetime is a gimmic. Sure its nice but you will use it a couple of times for the "cool factor" then it will wear off, just like the Wii did with so many people.

You hit the nail on the head androidmonkey. I don't think it will last long. Very gimmicky. Now when data speeds catch up that might be a different story.
For example, when phones began including really cheap-ass cameras I thought what a stupid idea. And still did until this last year or so when the quality finally caught up.
The hilarious thing to me is that King Steve in his ivory tower piously looks down upon the masses content that he is keeping them safe from porn not realizing that the#1 use of his new phone is probably NOT facetime but *****time... lol

Androidmonkey is correct. Video calling has been around for years. Japan (and I believe Europe) has been doing this way before iPhone4. Just because Apple says its revolutionary or magical doesn't mean they did it first. Apple is full of ****. Their marketing team is great at making people into believing what they say. People need to open their eyes. Apple-lovers = lemmings, automatons, etc. And another thing, Facetime over wi-fi is nothing more than video chat like on your pc. Good grief.
What are you guys talking about... I use video calling on my vibrant all of the time. you can clearly see a camera to the left of the speaker

It definitely is, pretty pathetic and one big reason why I'm still holding onto my X10. Sadly I think the the "average" consumer sees someone touching a screen and they just assume it's an iPhone, after all Apple is the only company who makes devices with touchscreens right?
P.S. Silly silly thread, but kinda true from my experience lol and fyi, to show the ladies you're a superuser just turn on Wifi tethering and you'll make them cream That's usually the feature that blows peoples minds (and loads) ...gross
...and I say, "no.. this is so much better than iphone.. Android, it's the future".. then just leave it at that - otherwise you run the risk of scaring them off!
nah..
i'm a girl so i don't enjoy explaining to other ppl (esp. girls) what the difference is..
but i just hate how i take out my phone and NOONE's asked me if it's an android or sony..
however... EVERYONE (anyone who cared enough to point it out) would say "ooohh is that the new iphone?"
damn it..
Were i live most young People have an Iphone now but actually a few asked me is this new from SE or is this the new Xperia.
LOL same thing happened to me in Canada, when i show my phone to make a text or something, this is what happends:
1- OMG IS THIS THE NEW IPHONE 4?
2- OMG THE SCREEN IS AWESOME
3- OMG YOUR XPERIA IS CRAZY!!! (after playing with it a bit... , instead of saying sony ericsson, they say xperia -_-")
4- IS THIS SIMILAR TO THE IPHONE?? WHATS BETTER???
5- DOES THIS HAVE GAMES LIKE THE IPHONE?
6- (then i lock my phone, and unlock again to change music); DAMN THE LOCKSCREEN IS SO AWESOME/CRAZY!!!! LET ME TRY!! (In my head: I ***** hate this lockscreen what's so awesome about it?)
and finally:
7- WOW HOW DOES THIS XPERIA UNLOCKS WITH THIS UNLOCK CODE (unlock pattern)

Was entering a gate to board a plane one day, before a security guy called..... and ask stuff about X10 just because he saw me putting it in the X-ray machine, he considered getting it and I gave a resounding NO.
Most of people around here use Blackberrys.. Though I felt being left out withut BBM, the sight of X10 made them drool (because iPhone is everywhere as well around here). A lot are tech-savvy so they recognized X10 immediately and.... silence (prolly jealousy (",))
Most thing girl/boy admire:
1. The arc lockscreen (it is annoying man....)
2. The 9-dot-unlock key
3. The sliding status bar from top / menu from bottom (because iPhone don't have one, BB as well)
4. The fact some iPhone games are ported to Android
5. The 8,1 MP camera

I have the lowest MP camera out of most of my friends with normal phones, but, they admire the phone. Unfortunately, the X10 just can't do a lot of the things that are common place on regular phones like TV, Electric Wallet, infrared, or IC. But, neither can any other smartphone on the market.
Apparently now Docomo will try their own handset design that incorporates Japanese market features. Sucks, because I'm stuck with the X10 for two years because I signed up for a discount plan... haha

Dunno if that suppose to be sarcasm, but that's exactly what I usually get..

The story of my X10

I bought the x10 as my first android.
I had very high intentions for it.
But after using it for a few days it was laggy, overheating..
So i figured i should update to the latest firmware and do a full reset.
Loading 2.1 made it only worse..
Then after a grueling 8 months, SE finally replaced the mother board.
You can clearly see by the slightly darkened tint and manufacturing process that this is gona be a good one.
By this point i figured that mabey i was insane and that the hardware was just that weak.
The i loaded CM.. and started applying tweaks i used on my old x10 to improve my phone speed.. "VM_heap = 32, max_actions_per_sec = 30.. you get the idea..
Supreme lord! i love my X10.
And for that i must thank XDA without the friendly help here and innovative idea's.
I must thank all the dev's for taking the initiative and showing SE that freedom shall prevail,
"We will not be bound by your rules, We stand tall we are FFA"
I'm no noob.. i might take a while to really catch on.
But what do you expect from a 27 year old with IQ of 179 and A.D.D.
I love the success and happy stories. I dont see many good ones. Thanks for sharing.
Sent from XDA Premium from my X10a rooted running 2.2.1 CM Rom from Rendeiro2005
Right..we should thanks all devs here..without them x10 won't become superb..I bought my x10 4 months ago and feel regret at the first time because lack of MT and update..But right now after some tweak and use CM6 as my rom..I love it so much..My friends who has Iphone always admire my x10 screen which has bright, wide screen and with bitsnacker theme..I hope after we got stable custom kernel our x10 become more superb..
It's a good thing you posted your IQ...
That isn't remotely pretentious or anything.
well someone could make a sappy movie out of your story, specially the ending when your IQ is revealed, leaving the audience in silence & awe
What alot of people these days don't get is that a phone is not phone... it's a tool. and when the singularity comes i will be ready.

TBH phone calls are the last thing I use my x10 for. If you bought your phone to just make calls then you should of went for an old Nokia.
*that's like saying, your car's a radio, it picks up radio signals

Not what i meant. Ie. My iphone dropped calls. It didnt do what a phone was meant for. If you didnt want a phone you shoild get a tablet or an itouch.
A smart phone is a phone not a tablet or computer thats a phone. Its a phone thats a computer (tool as he puts it)as advertised not technically speaking.
A car is not a radio. Cars can have radios installed and removed. My silvia doesnt have a radio. My x10 and iphone make calls and have plans. My itouch does not.
Point is...the x10 is a phone. A smart phone. If you want a tool that makes phone calls get a um..phone

well a phone can be more than a phone. just like putting a v6 in a ford escort.. do i want to carry 2000 devices in my pocket?.... psp, gps, phone, media player.
screw that.. one ring to rule them all.
p.s. ADD is a disorder... i have a small attention span.
the point was to thank every one o xda... so once again thank you.
may the source be with you.

That's fair enough, but I still only use my (phone) for maybe 10% of its use. If I had my way, it would no longer be called a phone or smartphone. Itouches or tablets are too big and don't make calls, therefore no use to me. All I'm saying is that there would be a huge list if things I use my (mobile) for before I'd get to "make phone calls"
but that's just my opinion.
Itouch is ipod touch it fits in yoir pocket and gets wifi.

It's a good thing you posted your IQ...
That isn't remotely pretentious or anything.

@fiscidtox, +1 once again we agree.
@OP, I guess higher isn't always better. My IQ certainly isn't that high, but I had the lag problem resolved a week after purchasing back in November with root, JIT, and junk apps removed. I guess I was dumb enough to look to others for help. ;-)
However, I do agree that Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 V05 and Z's Free X10 definitely took things to the next level. Really looking forward to trying custom Kernel ROMs shortly, and SE official 2.3.3 Gingerbread update in late June/early July.
