I would like to use K-9mail as my default client. What is the best way for me to disable the 2 email accounts I have coming into my phone through Android's GMail app?
Is it simply a matter of going into Setting---Accounts and turning off "Sync GMail" on each of the email accounts?
I gave up on K9... I couldn't get the alerts or refreshing of the inbox to work properly. I wish the stock email app had the option to delete from the server.

Basically, its annoying me, its like i have two seperate emails, whilst only using one.
I have the big mail widget as i like it, scrolling up and down emails without opening the app etc....
BUT
it seems to run seperate the android one, as when i get email notification, for 1 email sent to my gmail account, i get two notifications, one from htc widget one from android google mail. then when i load up htc, all the emails i have previously read, are set as not read because i read them on the android app!
anyone now a work around, ?
Unlink your gmail app from the gmail account. This is google's Gmail app that was written seperatley from the standard mail application, thus the notifications are seperate.
Use only the HTC Mail application and sign both your standard mail and gmail accounts on to them (activate POP3 or IMAP on your gmail account and set it up using the same details you would normally use in Outlook or some other program). There is a guide to setting up gmail accounts in external clients somewhere in the gmail help pages here: http://mail.google.com/support/
Once that is done, and assuming you've unlinked your gmail application completely, you should have it working the way you want.
Don't setup Gmail via IMAP or POP. Use Google's Exchange server. Instructions in the following link. They're for Windows Mobile but they work just the same.

Don't sign out of gmail, that would stop the market working as well, just go to home>menu>settings>accounts and sync>google
untick mail.
personally, i go the other way and refuse to use HTC's travesty of a mail program...but that's just my personal opinion. Hope you get it working how you want it...

Hi There!
I want to configure my wife's Defy so she can get email from her gmail account.
I don't want it to be pop3, as I don't want to remove any of the messages from her gmail account, as she also gets her email via pop3 on her Desktop Outlook?
I see 2 different gmail options on her phone, is it an option to get some form of sync'd account or perhaps is Imap the only other option?
Cheers
You might have to enable IMAP in your Gmail account preferences, but you can also use POP3 and configure it to not delete the messages on the server.
Also from my experience the default mail application works better than the gmail one which is slow and doesn't always show latest messages to me.

Yah I am finding it hard to believe there isn't some form of activesync syncing option.
When I receive an e-mail on my Nexus and delete it the same e-mail isn't deleted from Gmail when I access it through my desktop, it also comes up as unread even though i have read and deleted it through the Gmail app on my Nexus.
What mail app are you using? Gmail ? The Stock Mail Client?
Both have sync settings in them.

Using the stock Gmail app. I've checked in the settings and it is all set to sync so not sure what's going on.
When using the other stock e-mail app for my other e-mail accounts they sync fine.
That happens to me in k9 on my phone. I like Gmail better on my n7. Make sure you look in settings under your account and check that manage labels is set to sync the number of days you have it set for. And that sync is set for Gmail in general settings.
Hello,
I am very new to Android. I just received my Note 10.1 today. I am trying to configure my gmail and other mails on it. I want to use the mail app for all my emails instead of GMAIL app. How do I do that? When I initially booted the device, I used my gmail account and it automatically configured my gmail on the GMAIL app. I configured gmail on the native mail app as well. Now I have my gmail on both places, I want to use only the native mail app. Removing email sync under settings > accounts> is causing a sync error icon and it also cause the GMAIL app to crash.
Like I said I am very new to Android, this is my first android device. Can someone help me configure this? Hope I posted this on the right forum.
TIA

Hi, Thanks for reply. So you want me to use this new id to download apps etc on the play store, but use my main id for emails?
I don't use the Gmail app either. I use the Samsung stock e-mail client so my Exchange and other e-mail accounts are all in a unified inbox. Samsung's e-mail client can be set up on Gmail to receive "push" e-mail via Activesync. In the stock e-mail client set up a new e-mail account using your Gmail address and passord. On the first set-up page you'll see a "manual setup" option, select it.
Use these settings...
Under domain\user name enter...
google\"your e-mail address"@gmail.com
Under Exchange server enter...
m.google.com
Now you'll receive e-mails as they arrive in you Gmail inbox. This method is also less hard on the battery. Go in to Settings>Application manager and swipe three times to the left until "all" applications are showing. Scroll down to find the Gmail app. Open it and press "disable." Now all your Gmail will be routed through the stock e-mail client without being duplicated in Gmail.
P.S. - Gmail via Activesync is being discontinued to new users (legacy user's are protected) effective February 1, 2013.

Thanks for your reply. I have done the first part and it seems to be working. I see mails coming to the native mail app.
But I don't see an option to disable GMAIL app under app manager. All I have is force stop, uninstall updates, clear data, clear cache. NO other options. Am I missing something.

Oops. To disable an app you always have to uninstall any updates to it first. Once you do that you'll see the "disable" option.

Ok, I did it. It removed the gmail app. I guess I am good now. Thanks.
Guess you could call this a double question
First the issue I am having with the default Email App on the leaked kitkat rom
When I read one of my emails on my Desktop they don't get marked as read on the default email application. The K-9 Email application does not have this issue but if I could solve this via the default I won't have to use K-9
Second question is there a way to replace the default Email Client with K-9 so I don't get double email notifications on my notification tray? Aka I basically want to disable the default if I am unable to fix the issue I am having with it.

Sounds like a sync timing issue, if you go to your email settings you should be able to set the sync options, the push setting will be the one you want for immediate sync.
Turning off notifications in the email settings should fix the second issue you have, of course you could also uninstall the email app, but I'm not sure if K9 requires exchange services so you might choose to leave that part.
I already have set to push and the emails come in as soon as they do on my Desktop they just don't get marked as read if I read them on another device like the Desktop. K-9 mail has no such issue. I have just went ahead and deleted my email accdount from the samsung email app and am just using k-9 with the dark theme for now.
