Anyone else notice their phone runs hotter with Froyo? - EVO 4G General

Just something I've noticed with all the froyo roms...my phone seems to be warm all the time, even if no apps are keeping it awake.
Oh, and I still can't get past 6 hours of battery life, no matter what I do.

That just doesn't sound right. I managed to get 54 hours battery life out of my Evo, granted most of it was standby but I did use the phone too no 4g though. I can get around 6 hours if I don't put it down at all.

Froyo tends to run the CPU a bit more, because unlike Eclair, it's actually taking advantage of all that Snapdragon POWUH!

I don't know about custom roms coz I'm running stock but my phone is actually much cooler with froyo except when I'm tethering watching Hulu or Netflix. Then it gets so hot that it quits charging.
I can't tell my battery life coz I have it on charger almost all the time. Considering I'm running navigation, weatherbug and playing music (streaming or not) at the same time and for the most of the day, I'm guessing battery wouldn't last too long. lol

Sounds like a problem with the phone if you can't get past 6 hours of battery life and it's always warm even after turning everything off.

Kernels on Froyo

So I get terrible battery life with .33.4 kernels (925 or 800) but got phenomenal battery on Ravens 800mv from 5/03. Are there any .33.3 kernels that will have the right drivers? How hard would it be to mod?
Thanks
Have you considered just sticking with the stock kernel? I'm getting phenomenal battery life with the stock Froyo kernel. Last I checked, i was at 46% after 28 hours unplugged (pretty heavy usage too - streaming music over 3G, several phone calls, tons of texting, youtube, web browsing)

all kernels are going to depend on how much you play with it, and what you have running. if you don't have a load of widgets, background data, bluetooth, etc running, you should get decent battery life.
the more crap you run, the more energy it takes. common sense.

This!
And I am getting pretty good battery life off the stock Froyo kernel. Actually, I am only draining at 2.2% an hour, and have had my screen on for 1hr 57 minutes, and the device off the charger for 14 hours. I have also made about 45 minutes of phone calls, and let it download with the screen off a bit.
Personally I have similar battery life to what I was getting on cm with uv/oc kernal. It does appear like it might be a little worse but I need time to be sure. Regardless I have gained small but real improvements with battery life on both cm and enom using the custom kernals and I have no reason to expect another result with froyo. Since battery life isnt exactly something I would describe as gratuitous on the N1 I will be kernaling up as soon as one looks like it actually works without issues. Right now thats not exactly the situation as I read down in development. There are a few usb mounting issues going one way and no cam going the other. Hopefully there will be a more hashed out kernal soon as the guys get more time to play with it. So getting back to the begining you ought to have something to work with shortly.
So no one will ever get the old kernels working with Froyo, huh?
If only I could find one that worked well without the USB dismount issue or the wifi issue, everything I've tried has failed. IMO 2.6.34 so far has worked best for me but has the dismount issue. I've tried four so far and none of them work well. I did get pretty proficient at moving zip files from dropbox to the sd card though.
Battery life seems to be so across the board dependent on so many variables that it sometimes seems like it's not even worth trying to gauge other people's experiences. I've tried numerous ROM/Kernal/Usage/Setting combinations and have never gotten what I'd consider to be 'good' battery life. 2.2's no exception.
I just ended up buying this 2 battery and external charger pack off of eBay for 20 bucks and admitting defeat. Our superphones are luck of the draw it seems when it comes to battery life. I'd follow someone's set up to the letter and get nowhere near the battery life they claim to get. I can turn off syncing, keep the screen dim, run a kernel that's supposed to get great battery life, and still get around 3%-5% drain per hour on standby.
My morning routine has me use bluetooth stereo headphones for about 25 minutes on the metro while I look at a couple of webpages. From out the door fully charged I'll be down to around 82% when I get into the office. To me, that's laughably terrible, but it's the only life I've ever known with my Nexus One.

It is terrible and I was in the same boat as you. I found the kernel from 4/29 800mv and 5/03 800mv to be the big winners for me. Any other kernels and my battery drops like dead weight.

Ya. The two kernels I mentioned are the ones that had me going 1.5-3 days depending on usage.
In right there with you guys. I unplugged at 8am and now its 10am and I'm at 78% this is how its always been.
I downloaded the 5/03 one and I'm trying that one out now, thanks. Maybe we'll see some improvement. It sucks to lose the ability to record video for a chance at battery life on par with what I'd get on a RAZR, but that's the world we live in.

True enough, but phones in the same category perform much better than ours in terms of battery life, and they never made the claim to be 'superphones'. And AMOLEDs are designed to not use a lot of juice, but HTC somehow botched that idea, from my research.

I agree... Hopefully the "final" release of Froyo will have an updated kernel addressing the battery life. To be, it's not a big deal because I am always near a charger but it would be nice to be able to get through an ENTIRE day of heavy usage without worrying about the battery dying.
I havent had a smartphone recently that could didn't need to be charged every night. I would love better battery life as I jmake it through weaker usage days at about 40% moderate usage at about 25% and with heavy use I have to find a way to get plugged in to get through. Still, reading how other similar phones (large screen 1 ghz etc) are doing leads me to believe that the N1 is roughly comparable. I'm not sure how you can compare a modern smartphone to a far less power hungry (and capable) feature phone that a person almost certainly did less with over the course of a day?

I'm having great battery life

Hey guys I got my EVO in the mail on Thursday, and do I love the thing! I have been reading about battery life and was a little concerned at first, but that was then. Last night I unplugged my phone at 7pm and it had a 95% charge. I played with it a bit and texted until around 12am. I did not charge it and started texting and using it for a while this morning around 10am. It is now 4pm and I have 49% battery. If this is what everyone is complaining about, im happy with it haha.
Basically, it's people leaving 4G / Wifi / Bluetooth / GPS all on at the same time that kills the battery life of the Evo. My launch-day Evo has routinely done 20+ hours of usage with no problems.
The only times I've ever seen a marked decrease in battery performance, I could find that some app was hung up in the background draining the juice.
Rooted or just stock non root?

Come back after you try using data for an extended time (texts don't need data connections most of the time), having your mail sync for even every 3 hours or so and facebook, news, weather or any other auto sync feature enabled. Watch your battery die as quick as a witch under water.
My email syncs every 10 minutes, and my weather syncs as soon as it can. (not sure how many minutes). My facebook updates pretty often. And I have news updating as well.
My phone is also NOT rooted.
I get fine battery life, with WiFi connected I get much better standby than when using mobile data. Turn mobile data off when I'm out and about and the battery basically doesn't move. But I still can get 20 hours of use if I'm not on my phone constantly. I only turn off mobile data if I think I need my phone to last more than a day. Like camping or something. I have gmail pushed and weather and all that good stuff synced every hour. Been playing with juice defender which does increase battery life pretty good but you can get the same effect by toggling your mobile data with the widget. Juice defender does turn on data every 15 mins for a minute to sync which is nice but it causes a little lag when you unlock your screen because it turns on data as soon as you unlock, a little annoying.

I highly doubt this is possible especially on the stock battey. I personally know there is no way to have all those apps syncing at those frequencies on the stock battery and still get MORE than 9 hours of use. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783364
Unless you turned off your phone somewhere in that timeline and are not telling that bit of info. With the sync frequency you just gave, I seriously doubt your battery numbers are even the correct ones you're giving.

According to that, it says your phone has been powered on for 48 minutes and used for 15 minutes. Go back and check the link I gave in my first response and look at the screenshot most people would want to see.
EDIT: Saw your edit and your phone has been in standby most of the time. I personally am not impressed by standby times. But if that's what floats your boat then so be it. I personally have gotten 10 hours of CONSTANT use on the stock battery with apps syncing every hour and get 1.5 days normal use on my extended batteries.

I know that people talk about losing the first 10% in like 10 minutes, but has anyone ever noticed how long it takes to lose the last 10% of the battery? That sht is frustrating, going from 90 to 70 for me takes only about an hour, but the last 10% for me can carry me another 3 hours or so. My battery is teasing me.

Anyone else getting poor battery life with EC05?

I have the device on auto-brightness settings. I will say that the auto-brightness IS pretty bright with EC05. MUCH brighter than other versions. Anyone else noticing this?
I came from EB13 and I got excellent battery life. So far, today, while getting full bars:
Time on: 7 Hours 21 minutes since unplugged
Time on display: 56 minutes (86%)
Voice calls: 8 minutes
Total battery left: 32%. That's a far cry from what I was getting with EB13.
Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with this version! Although, EB13 was awesome as well. I just had a bit more force closes here and there on EB13.
Took mine off the charger around 8am with moderate use mine tanked around 6. I also live in an excellent 3G/4G area.

Any reason why?
Its probably the brightness broham. Try turning it on manual and keep it as low as possible. The screen is the biggest stress on the battery. The brighter the background the worse the battery life as well.
re: waiting a while... the battery gets 'conditioned'... look up one of the MANY threads on that subject on here... some you have to be an astrophysicist to understand, but interesting nonetheless. Re: brightness, yeah, turn it on manual, set it on lowest poss setting, indoors most of the time its plenty bright, and if your ROM didnt disable it (idunno why they would) hold down your status bar and a little drop thingy comes down, slide L or R for brightness, like for outside, or if you really wanna make an EVO user sad and show off the AMOLED mmmmm..... contrast ratio and black levels....
This is some of the best battery life I have gotten out of this phone period. Its so good I dont even want to flash a custom ROM. I have brightness turned down. F that auto brightness..I hate that feature. I unplugged today at 6 in the morning...Played on it before work....Played while at work.....Some more after work...A little while driving...(dont judge me) ....... And now Im on it playing poker online. I love it. Im so serious about not flashing a custom ROM. I am loving this new update and its battery life.

This is EXACTLY my usage patterns and battery for the last 2 days. The only way I'm getting 14 hours out of this thing is if I don't turn it on once. And fixing the brightness isn't going to help me too much if it loses 80% just sitting there idle is it? I'm pretty close to just flashing it back to DI18, declining updates (or flashing the Syndicate rom from that era) and just living with it. For the record, I also had miserable battery with everything DK28 and EB13. Perhaps my phone just doesn't like Froyo?

I keep hearing about not all batteries are equal I wonder how true that is. I just flashed the ACS SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0.2 and I am curious to see how my battery life is on the road tomorrow..errr...today at this point.
I know if I am using it off and on pretty constantly I get no more than 6hours with moderate activity (email, web, occasional phone call) we will see what happens now that I am on this ROM.
I told myself I wouldn't go to a non-factory ROM but this is stable, runs the processor with less power @1GHz and with the click of a button you have on-demand 1.2GHz.
A few other things I noticed is the interface is MUCH snappier even though I am using the TouchWiz launcher and the "Fully Loaded" Version I can't wait to see how it goes.
After 2 days on EC05 my battery life is ok, but not as good as when I used a custom undervolting kernel. After 12 hours I'm at about 40%. Today I'm going to try using setCPU to run a different profile and see if it works or makes a difference.
i havent seen good battery life since 2.1 :/ i used to get 24 hours of use with epic experience and the phoenix kernel.
no way im going back to 2.1 just for battery life. although it is the most important thing to me

I have bad battery life with EC05. Tested today with only 3 texts, and two 10 minute phone calls.
8 hours of standby time and I've burned 5.25% of battery per hour.
Wifi on 99% of the time and within range. Policy = never sleep
Same usage for the weekend on DI18 I'd be around ~85% rather than my current 57%.
My battery life is even worse for work days when I have Lotus Notes Traveler sync scheduling every 15 minutes.
DI18 end % of 8 hours of work = ~70-75%
EC05 end % of 8 hours of work = ~43%

Take it in and tell the sprint rep. Maybe you could get a new battery for free. if not you may want to buy one.
Automatic Brightness says that it will hurt your battery more then manually setting your brightness. Gosh, no wonder why so many people complain about battery life. No one can read anymore. Seriously, my battery life is the exact same as DI18 as it is on EC05. Learn how to use your phone efficiently.
Also take into account EC05 is Froyo, and DI18 is Eclair. A big difference in how they have to be treated. You will hurt your battery more doing certain things in Froyo then you did in Eclair, one example is Task Killing.
And if you dare to have the nerve to disagree with me, I'll redirect you to "Poor Battery Life" threads from EVERY SINGLE DEVICE on XDA. I doubt every carrier and company is making the battery life horrible, nah just the users.
Does that mean we should NOT kill tasks on froyo?
hold down your status bar and a little drop thingy comes down, slide L or R for brightness, [/QUOTE]
See, thanks for that info. I thought that feature was disabled on froyo builds. Even with you saying it works, its very rare that it works for me. On 2.1 it was so easy to swipe and adjust it....

I flashed myns synergy rom a couple of weeks ago and have been getting decent battery life. Today my battery life is blowing me away. Going on 11 1/2 hours since being unplugged with my normal usage and still have 22% battery left. Not heavy use by any means but moderate at least. There's a great battery guide in the Q/A section, all kinds of tricks. Might find the guide to kernels there too, another way to drastically improve battery life. The new GB kernel sprint released is garbage, try netarcy-toast "brand" kernels
No where near CM7's battery life, but still very much a daily driver. I usually plugged up at around 40% battery after at least 12 hours usage.
Pretty decent for a Sense rom.
I've had my Evo unplugged for the last 2 days and still sitting at 43%. This is with sending about 60 texts, facebooked, got on frostwire for a bit, made like 12 calls, played a couple of rounds of Angry Birds and been on wifi about 95 percent of the time. Never has this happened with other roms. And I have tried a lot. Only thing disabled was 4G(none in my area)
Unplugged Sunday at about 2pm, it's now Tues at noon, I'm still at 49%.
Light to moderate usage since then, about 200 texts, a few short phone calls, and about two hours combined of facebook and twitter. VERY good life for 2 days worth of usage.
I just recently switched over from CM7 to Synergy RC1... I loved when I went away from Sense to AOSP and was reluctant to switch back. But very pleased and battery life I can confirm is excellent for me as well. My only gripe now is that I'm getting the darn unread email count showing up on my home screen icons even though there is no unread emails. I have found online that it is a known issue and mostly seen in 2.3.3? Can anyone confirm that?
Thanks!
I have tried several sense 2.1+3.0 roms, Virus Kingdom revolution, and mik g I have never been more happy than once I began using Synergy. Heck I even devoted a whole post on Google+ about it. Very stable and my battery is ridiculous. I took my phone off the charger at 6:30 am cdt its now 12:15 pm and I'm at 78%. That's with heavy usage. Great job devs.

When I first flashed I was goeeting okay battery life, the past few days has blown me away. I am used to seeing my battery drop like mad...but it does not do that anymore. I did nothing that I have not done on other ROMs, it just seems to work better after being on the phone a couple of weeks. This will be my ROM for quite some time now!
I'm really trying to get to the bottom of this display usage issue. My display usage stays extremely high compared to everything else. The more I use the phone, the higher it goes. Say if I use the phone a lot, it will be around 90%. If I barely touch the phone, it will go down to 50% but it's still a LOT higher than everything else. And it drains the hell out of my battery. If I barely use it I can get maybe 12 hours at most. If I do use it, I'll be lucky to get 7-8 hours.
It starting happening to me on MikFroyo but it didn't use to do it before. And now I'm noticing the same thing with Synergy. This is driving me nuts because it's keeping me from using my two favorite roms as a daily. I'll post three pictures. One is what my battery life/usage used to look like, one on MikFroyo 4.62, and one on Synergy RC1. I would really appreciate any insight to this.
Edit: It's only these two roms (that I've tried at least) that gives me this issue, and I think MikG if I can remember correctly. CM, Salvage-Mod, and a few other older Sense roms do not cause it.
This is with MikG 1.5, with my usual fairly heavy use.
AMAZING battery life, and 100% stable in my experience.
I have tried many, many ROMs and this one beats all.
no idea how people get battery life like that. i'm lucky to make it a 14 hours~ with similar usage

I was getting maybe 14-16 hours, then I removed the check mark from Always On Data, and the battery life doubled. (again, this is with MikG only.)

let me start by saying that i used to think the same way your thinking untill one of the guys on the synergy post broke it down for me. it's simple, you keep thinking that the display% is an issue but it's only a number and it doesnt represent your actual battery drain. if you hardly use your phone, lets say u make a couple of calls, check some mail and browse the web. well the percentage is correct, your display was on longer than any other application. so it's going to be higher no question. the real question is are you getting good battery life or not? i'm on synergy RLC1 and after some suggestions that i upgrade my PRL, PRi, and wimax. which i did, now im getting great battery life even though my display percentage is still the highest application.

That is only the case if it's maybe a little higher than the rest of the things. It's a percentage of what has used the battery. When the display is at 90% and everything else is at 3% or less, there is a problem. And no, I am getting HORRIBLE battery life. Like I explained, on ROMs that don't have the extremely high display usage I can get 20-30 hours on one charge. The way the battery drains when I'm using it is extremely noticeable. The picture I posted that has been on for 14 hours with 48% left, that's how my battery usage should look. Granted I hadn't used the phone as much as normal that day, it still would be around the range of everything else.

ok, may i suggest that you upgrade all PRI, PRL, wimax etc.. you know all that stuff and give it 2 days to see if that helps. it made a major difference for me..

4.2.2 stock battery life worse?

I'm noticing that battery life is worse in 4.2.2 - I was on cm10.1 nightlies w. Cm10.1 kernel and was getting about 10 hours screen-on time before I needed to charge, but I'm getting 7 hours at best on 4.2.2 stock (rooted, bootlader locked).
I have the usual culprits turned off - Google now, location services, currents background updates etc. So I hoped I would at least get the same.
Anyone else?

Put the latest cm10.1 build on. They merged in 4.2.2.

I have never gotten more than 8 hours of battery life with 4.2.1, but so far on 4.2.2 I'm down to 73 with 3:30 screen time, so I guess it got better for me

Yes! I just read that. I am just about to do it now.
I can't comment on battery life, but did notice something a little alarming with regard to battery drain. Was on the couch for an hour talking to someone using viber, just plain text. No video or audio. Tablet was plugged into the wall, and after about an hour i noticed that the battery had gone from 100% to 98%. Should not be possible for a simple messaging app to cause the battery to drain faster than it can charge. screen was on auto brightness as well.

Did you look at your battery information to see what was using the most energy? Display is always far and away the highest for me, and if it was on Auto Brightness, depending on the lighting around you, it could have been running at full brightness...which would be a pretty massive drain on battery.

Once the device reaches a full charge it cuts off the power draw to avoid damaging the battery. It's normal for it to hover between 97% and 100% while still plugged in.
I barely get 6 hours of use now.

I did not look at battery usage, but the screen was generally dimmed, where as normally i have it manually set to full brightness, and nothing was running in the background that would not normally be running, that is to say nothing other than android stuff, it's basically a tablet for internet, email and skype/viber while i watch films etc on my computer

Indeed, but this has never happened before and i typically run the device with screen on maximum brightness. on 4.2.1 it would always show 100% when plugged in, i never once saw it drop to 99% or below.
So without further analysis of the issue, it could either be that something is sucking more power, which would seem odd, or that the update has brought about changes to the way the device charges, or changes to the way the device displays the battery level.
Damn guys, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I'm jumping around in happiness when I manage to get over 6 hours of screen time lol.
I've been on battery for the past 12+ hours with about 6 hours 15 minutes screen time and still have 36% battery left. Battery seems at least as good as on 4.2.1.

if you are rooted change your processor speed to 1.5gHz, it really helped me get better battery life
so far at 6 hours of youtube with 50% left to go

Thanks, I've done this now, and get about 5~6 hours of screen time now with around 50% left.
My battery life has gotten considerably better after updating to 4.2.2. The biggest improvement is how little the battery life drains on standby...it's nearly nonexistent.

Standby has always been great for me. With stock rooted 4.2.2 I'm getting great battery life. Loses maybe 2% after 8-10 hours idle. In constant use I'm averaging 11 hours on screen. I have everything on and synced but as I'm indoors I stick to 30% brightness. Also, I'm mostly just browsing. With games the life would be less for sure. Totally satisfied with the battery life of this tablet. If yours is getting truly bad battery life I suggest you try searching for rogue apps. After that, try a complete reflash of the stock image which deletes everything. Another thing I've found that helps performance is setting the WiFi band manually. As I have a pretty good router that utilizes both the 5 and 2.4ghz bands I set mine to 5ghz only. I live in a town house and 2.4ghz can be pretty congested even after turning my antenna power up to 150mv or greater. The 5ghz band is pretty open. I'm getting load times on webpages comparable to my i5 2500k sandy at 4.5ghz and ssd with its 5ghz WiFi n wireless card. This is the quickest rendering tablet I've ever used.
As an aside, the complete re image to stock 4.2.2 from Google might fix reboot problems as well. It seems to do wonders for people with battery and other issues on early n4s. My screen on mine is new but the hardware is from launch day.

My battery life is significantly worse after the update. I flashed back to stock 4.2.2. It seems that the problem with mine is my tablet isn't sleeping. Android os is the highest battery user. Maps is taking a lot too. I have Google now and location services turned on so I'll try disabling those again... No rebooting though
