Dunno if this is a common occurrence, I havent seen anyone mention anything similar to this not that its an amazingly unique and spectacular problem, but I just didnt think I would be experiencing this while only having the phone for less than 5 days. First of all, I believe this phone was a return from the store that I bought it from, but I couldnt tell until today when I figured out what was actually supposed to come in the box. Besides that, all of a sudden today it died on me and I didnt think it was the battery since it had 40% left the last time I saw it. Shrugged it off until I plugged it in, at which point it didnt turn on so I decided to pop out the battery and stick it back in and I had a bit of a sigh of relief.
Its been a while since Ive actually had a phone worth caring for, is this something I should return it for and get a new one while I still can? Even if its not a huge problem now, does it have the potential to get worse and worse? *sigh* out of all of the phones Ive had, Ive liked this the most since it was problem free.
I've never had to do this.. But hard freezes are possible.
But if it happens a lot, it might be a doa.. Either way, in most countries you have 10 working days at least for DOA, which allows you to return and get your money back or new unit. Given the complaints about GPS though, it is possible they have tried to resell some returned units as "brand new"
Whats a hard freeze? Its only happened once, but then I dont know when the next time it may happen. My phone has a way of turning off in my pocket multiple times a day due to the case that I use for it, which Im probably going to stop using once I find a suitable pouch. I dont know, maybe that had an effect on it for some ridiculous reason? It mighta turned off and just not turned back on?
Actually..... Come to notice it right now, I cant even turn the phone off without going through the unlock pattern. So, does that mean my phones been intermittently shutting down on its own or something? Ffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu**********************
My phone did this a few times. I had to re-install battery to get it going again. It happened on the 1st, 2nd, and 5th day,...but hasn't happened for about 1 week now. 2 reasons it may have stopped:
1) I got a new battery. My friend was going to return his SGS because of multiple problems, and swapped me batteries before returning it.
2) Did the firmware update (Bell Mobility - canada)
If i were you, i would exchange it for a new one. You don't want to sleep in on an important appointment because your phone turned itself off in the middle of the night! You are paying big bucks for this phone, and deserve a phone that works great.

After I installed Faria 3.3 rom last week I started getting random shutdowns on my 8125. Today I plugged it in to my computer, walked away, came back and my phone was shut down. For good. I had it clocked between 192mhz and 240 mhz, but it was 192mhz when it died on me.
I bought the phone February 17, 2006, so my warranty is now over Do you guys think Cingular will help me out if I call their handset support tomorrow? But even then, this thing is unlocked and flashed a with a hacked ROM...am I in a bit of a predicament here? I can't really afford to buy a new phone (of this stature) right now.
Trying my best to keep my composure....but this ****ing sucks!!!!
Give us some more info so that we can help you: Please confirm if you have tried the following:
1) Has the battery got any charge in it - sounds a bit lame but just confirm it please.
2) Have you tried to force it into bootloader mode [4 coloured bars on screen] (Hold in camera button - push reset -release reset but continue to hold camera button)
Thank you for your help, the battery is charged 100%. My father has the same phone and I was able to boot it up fine with my battery.
I tried doing this boot you described and nothing happens.
Me too...
the same thing happened on my mda it turned on after that its completely dead. i think mine is bricked too, cant seem to turn it on
Doesn't look good I'm afraid. I did a quick search on the forum and not a lot came up. Maybe it is worth a try with Cingular if it is big time broke I doubt if they will be able to detect that it was a cooked ROM that was on it.
I did have it running at 276mhz for a couple of days last week, but I saw nothing wrong with it. I just wanted to save my battery life so I went back to 192mhz and then 2 days ago it started doing this. The first time it happened, I just switched the batteries and turned it on and it worked. Now this time, it won't turn on at all.
I'm gonna try calling them tomorrow, I just hope they even honor it considering it's been over a year. This is the second 8125 I've gone through though, last August I had a problem with my screen and Cingular sent me another me this one.
Not Under Warranty
I really don't think you're going to have any luck with Cingular. First of all, if it's been over a year since the initial purchase, you're already out of warranty. Your replacement phone that you got in August doesn't carry a full one year warranty -- it's only warranteed until the 1 year anniversary date of the ORIGINAL phone purchased.
Secondly, even if it was within the warranty period, there are ways they can tell that it was NOT running an Official ROM. Oh, Cingular won't be able to tell when you turn it in, but they ship them to HTC for reconditioning, and HTC can tell.
It's because of people turning in their bricked phones under a warranty -- and the resulting financial losses from exchaning them -- that caused the carriers and manufacturers to turn up the heat to make Microsoft finally issue their edict of "cease and desist." Now, the ROMs are gone from the ftp and we have to "go underground" to tinker and hope that the file we download isn't corrupted or full of viruses.
What the carriers SHOULD have done, instead, was return those phones to their owners with a bill for the replacement cost. Maybe then people would have thought twice about making their phone carriers' responsible for damage the user had done to their phones.
Do you think there'd be any thing at all they could do for me? Maybe get me a refurbished one at a discounted rate since I've been a longtime customer? I pretty much just threw away $300 for 1 year of use...this is disgusting...
I just wish I had the resources and friends on the inside that other people do. Hell, my uncle is getting 3G on his 8525 through the MediaNet plan instead of Data Connect because of a friend he has over there.
Well it looks like T-Mobile will be getting a call from me today for a return. For absolutely no reason my rear speaker decided it no longer wants to work. Which means no ringer. I will admit I'm normally rough on phones and I know to get insurance when I got this one I didn't. How ever since this is clearly a hardware failure over the phone being abused I should have no problem. Just makes it a pain. I guess I can use the Fuze for a few days or just have no ringer till the new one comes in.
Ugh now the job of returning it back to stock form,LOL
i got mine early from walmart and the speaker died the next day. luckily was able to go back and get their last one.
Well since I had gone through WireFly I had to go through them for a replacement. That made it a bit rough but with a bit of *****ing I was able to get a reasonable deal with getting the replacement shipped out. They wanted the phone to be shipped to them for inspection first and then ship a new phone all the while I would be without service. Or I could have one shipped one day air if I payed for the phone again plus a 250 shipping guaranty and they would give me the 250 back when they received the old phone and keep the 99. What?!?!?!?!? I'm not buying the phone twice! I quick talking to and I get them to do 99 shipping guaranty and recredit once the old phone is returned.
i also had this problem this weekend. i had my phone for two weeks and the loud speaker just gave out for no reason. my phone performed like a charm thought i was one of the lucky ones with no lags or freezes ever! even after i installed quite a few apps. had to go to local tmobile store luckily they had them in stock but had to pay again for the phone while they reimbursed me for the first one. just takes about three days to see it back in my bank account. kinda sucks but im hoping this issue doesnt come back again. is this happening alot from other users?
My replacement hasn't had the same issue. KNOCK ON WOOD,lol.
i had the same prob after i did the update...this might sound a lil crazy but all i had to do was push the reset button under the battery cover
god wish i would of tried that before taking it back. i havent done the upgrade to rom 2.13 just yet kinda waiting it out. also, would that be considered a hard reset?

Pushing that tiny (red or yellow) button under the battery cover is just one of the ways to do a soft reset. Doing a hard reset would wipe the device completely and return it to the most recent "stock" state (last time a ROM was placed on the phone, stock or custom)....and that takes different steps than a soft-reset
Ya well that wasn't my issue. I did soft and hard resets. New ROM, old ROM, stock ROM. Nothing did the trick. Also when you smack the phone and you get sound then a second later it stops for good is a pretty good indication that it's hardware.
Mine went out all of the sudden too. It was out, then it worked again, then went out again. I took mine into T Mobile and my dude there checked it out and determined it, in fact, didn't work. They were out of stock so they ordered me one... Didn't have to pay a dime. Got it in 3 days. I had to live without a speaker for 3 days but it wasn't too bad.
I get my phone on march 24th(1), Get home and the screen is jacked up, return it. Thats 2 . Two weeks later the phone wont charge, now the phone is sold out and i have to use a crappy flip phone. 3 days later i get a new one. Thats 3. Two weeks or so later the phone keeps shutting off and no matter what i do wont stay on for more then 1 hour at a time. Return that one and now since im out of my remorse period i have to go thru Tmobile and no longer the store. New phone sent to me in a day... Thats 4. A few days after getting me 4rd HD2 i dropped it and cracked the screen called the insurance company and again phone was on back order so i had to wait 4 days to get it. This is the 5th one now. Now today i wake up and my phone is doing what the 2nd one was doing and would charge. I can plug the phone in with my charger or my girls, with my stock battery or my extended. and i get the same blinking orange and green led like i got when my 2nd phone was messing up. I about over this phone and i dont think i would still have one if it wasnt for you guys on this website with at the hacks and roms you make....
Anyone else have any issues like me hahahahahaha
very strange, I literally have had zero problems with my phone.
get a Samsung Vibrant when it comes out soon from tmobile.
No problems with my HD2 either. Now, T-Mobile's coverage, that's another story.

Honestly its you, there is no way some one could have that many problems with phones. Make sure you are using the charger that comes in the box and don't charge it on the computer.

Agree. You either have really bad luck (doubtful), or you're not charging it right. This is a great phone, if you take some time to read instructions; especially if it's your first smart phone (or ppc if you prefer).
I only had 1 replacement, and that was because my HD2 has a blown speaker.
I bought mine when they came out, and have only charged it on my computer, and in my car via t-mobile mini usb charger.
I too have had ZERO problems with the phone, other than the problems we all know related to SENCE and WINMO.
Zero problems. I charge on the computer as well as using the wall charger. No battery issues.
Zero hardware problems here;
Got mine on release day;
Flashed more than 200 times now ; sometimes 10 times a day building ROM's; so it's either bad luck or something you are doing differently; besides drop checking it.
I haven't had any hardware issues with mine that weren't caused by me. The blinking LED is due to battery overheating... Honestly, like others have said... it's you, not the phone.
nardone, are you using any charger other than the stock one that comes with the phone?
I have had mine for 3 weeks and havent had any problems, except today. Just outside of Phoenix it was 115 degrees today and my phone was hot. Battery was at 30% and i plugged my charger and it would blink from green to orange. Turned AC to full blast and cooled it down and it worked again no problem.

Just like a few other people in this thread. Your first phone may have not worked, but I doubt all 5 did not. It's technically possible, but statistically, highly unlikely.
I had a feeling you guys weren't gonna believe me...
As far as it being my fault yes i take full responsibility for the cracked one.
not the others tho. I can also show proof for the other returned phones...
No i don't use anything but the hd2 charger and never charge on my comp.
and as far as the overheating battery i cant say your not right(cuz i would just take your word for it) but i can say that phone 2 and 5 didn't have an "overheating" problem. as i stated before i tried different batteries and chargers only to find out the phone itself... Not to mention when i called the insurance company and T-mobile they both said they have had issues with charging Maybe i have bad luck or maybe my area got a ****ty shipment. I mean there's nothing anyone can really do wrong to this cell phone as far as having hardware issues so people saying "its you" That's just letting me know how ignorant they are
A buddy of mine at work is on number 3 already
Maybe we are just the ones who aren't afraid to say how god damn ****ty this phone really is
Oh and no this is not my first smart phone and definitely not my last
that's how i was with the tp2. i went through about 10.
Same problem...

I got the blinking orange and green led and wouldn't charge when one of the battery connector pins was bent. I bent it back and worked fine after that. That could have been the problem.
why is it so bad to charge the HD2 via computer? I mean when I hook it to my computer to copy CAB, its already automatically charging so whats so bad about it?
I dont see anything wrong with charging on the comp. I have had over 100 cell phones probly more and all have charged on the comp. I think there are just people out there looking to answer my problem with what ever they can think of...
As far as the connector for the battery being bent, It wasnt!
My phone turned on and all just didnt charge i looked up the orange blinking light and have seen both people saying either battery over heating or the Mini USB port being faulty.
I do want to thank everyone for there replies tho. With out this site my phone would flat out suck....
Hello everyone,
My hd2 was running fine for the past (when did it come out?) and all of a sudden after putting it into sleep mode (clicking the red button) the screen became unresponsive after turning it on again.
Before, the screen would only be unresponsive only after putting the phone in sleep mode, but now the screen is not responding wherever I am in the phone.
I did task 29 5 times with different roms/radios and no such luck.
I've read in other posts that it's a hardware AND a software problem, and there certainly ISN'T any solutions to the problem.
My question is that has anyone had an partial victories over this problem?
I'm currently in the middle east working and I'll be returning to Texas in a month.
I have a backup phone, the n97... what a wreck, I really hate that phone. If I see another "memory is full" warning, I'll blow my head off.
I guess karma is a *****, last month I was complaining hard about the HD2 (made a huge post... actually) and now it struck out on me, on the worst time.
A tip to anyone who's having a similar problem, use "MyMobiler" to control your phone via your computer, it saved me from losing my new contacts
Also, for the people who replaced their phones, do I need to call ahead of time to get a replacement or would I be able to simply walk into a T-mobile store and get a replacement? (I currently have an ongoing account with them)
Fun Fact: they sell the unbranded HD2 here for 1000 USD
mine started getting the "s.o.d." and requires a battery pull...never happened before and i'm on stock..a hard reset or replacement is in my future!
The battery pull used to worked, but not anymore. I feel that the body glove case might actually have something to do with this, since whenever there is a force pushed on the phone, that force will end up all around the screen and under the buttons.
I'm planning on selling the phone, so I guess it's a good thing. I'll get a brand new one.

You're planning on selling a touch phone, on which the touch screen doesn't work? Will you tell that to the buyer?
You should be able to exchange it for a new one under warranty.
anyone find a solution to this? I have now bought 2 hd2's that have done the exact same thing, I am on att network so I obviolsuy have no warranty, but this is rediculous, i love the phone when it works, just cant keep buying new phones that fail after 2 months, i now have 2 to send for repair to htc

what makes you think its not under warranty? its not illegal to unlock and use on another network. if tmous refuse to fix it,(though by rights they should, if you hav e proof of purchase), its still got its manufacturers warranty, it is after all less than a year old. contact htc, the most that should cost is the cost of returning it to them.
Hello All, I just found out this info and felt the need to pass it along even if the fact that this is most probably a rare issue.
One day my hero just quit booting into android. Could not use adb (didn't get that far into booting android/wouldnt boot at all). Could not get into recovery, and it only showed the very first white HTC screen with green letters.
Luckily I could boot into hboot, which I used to wipe the phone thinking my recovery/bootloader borked on me. No deal. It wiped/flashed HERCIMG.zip, however STILL wouldn't boot into android.
Took it to the store, and got a replacement. First, they just tried booting the old phone.. same issue, so they got me a replacement hero out, and put in the old battery. Didn't boot.. I thought hmm... Maybe just the battery? So they put a new battery in my old hero. Still wouldn't boot. So they put the new battery into the new hero. Booted! Ok, so they were both borked... but no!
Today I get a text message stating that the carrier is charging me $54 for replacement out of warranty... I thought to myself that is really odd because if they found it was rooted/custom rom/etc (which I wiped from hboot) then they would charge me full price (up to $150). I figured it was spam but decided to call the carrier.
Carrier told me it WAS from them (or rather the warranty company), but it was because they found NO FAULT in the phone, and that price was to rebuild the phone to resell as a refurb?!
They don't send the batteries in with broken phones for warranty. So here is what must have happened:
Battery was shot.
New phone wouldn't boot with old battery
Old phone wouldn't boot with old battery
New phone does boot (and is working fine btw) with new battery(well rather used but different battery because they don't give new batteries with replacement phones.. F*ked up I know..)
Old phone WAS booting with new battery, however since I wiped it, it was building dalvik cache so it looked like it wasnt booting!
I am now disputing the claim because the fault would lie with the store clerk who warrantied the phone and not me. It was his decision not mine.
So bottom line, if your phone is having these same issues, go get a friend's hero, use the battery to see if it works, and if so then that's the issue.
WoW! I can see a charge of a replacement done through a phone call. But the tech made that call not you. I sent one back through a phone call that I had dropped, phone worked but I told them it wouldnt connect to internet. Before I sent it back I downloaded a TON of apps to the point it wouldnt run very well due to memory being full, I am lucky they didnt charge me!
How long before they charged you, its been almost 2 months and no charge for me, yet. lol
btw - the old battery might be 'fine' now as well...
i lost my phone for a couple months, battery dead, put on charger, green light (charged), so tried to boot - nogo...
had replacement phone/battery, put this 'good' battery into old phone - it, eventually, DID boot (you kinda screwed cuz didnt know that no-os=no-boot)...
now, i WAS able to get the old-battery that supposedly was 'full' to start charging on new-phone - but it (battery) was nowhere near full...
eventually both batteries and both phones are now back-to-normal, but if battery dies - i think something gets reset in the phone-that-had-battery-death that wont get fixed immed...
hth, h.
btw - yes, your case is the sprint-techs-fault... but, to-be-fair, he could not have known that there was no-os on your phone... thus, your-fault for taking a not-warrantable (???) phone in for repair ? idk, gl...

Interesting... In many ways.
Actually I take back the comment on the in store tech. He actually did his part, and was very nice about it. We both felt it was the phone and the battery. It was just one of those mishaps where it looked like a duck, walked like a duck but was actually a goose.
And there was an os on the phone, not rooted and the HERCIMG.zip I flashed from hboot was the carrier's RUU not a custom rom btw. Therefore making it fully warrantable ry.. heh.
Sheesh this is crazy, I've had 4 herocs none of mine ever had problems but I called and made some random junk up to get new ones cause I'm picky about little scratches and etc lol I know its bad but hey I pay for insurance and my monthly bill is 150 so they can kiss my a$$ . Every time I would fine a scratch that bothered me I would just send it back and say something random, they didn't care and just sent one out 4 different times. I never felt bad I've been with sprint for 4 years never late on my bill and their customer service always treats me like crap or maybe my luck is bad. But my point is nothing was ever wrong with my phones and they never charged me.

Lol! Well, I guess it's just which way you look at it. I wish I still had my old hero cause I knew exactly every blemish on it (which had VERY few btw) so if I ever had to identify it I could do so easily.
Also, I don't like doing returns unless I have to. But at the same time, I don't pay extra on phone insurance, and your bill is $150/mo?! Damn! What plan do you have? I pay $120 for unlimited EVERYTHING for two phones per month, and the only thing I don't have is mms ($10 extra, but I don't do mms anyways so I could care less).
If your in the south eastern region of the U.S. you should consider checking out Cellular South man, cause no one can beat their plans, and even though you have to sign 2yr contract (they do not have 1yr contracts) you way less in the longrun, and their service is actually quite good (well... depending) but not as bad as what I have heard about sprint at least.
