I talked to my local sprint store representative about when they are going to have a Samsung Epic demonstration model available. After some digging he found that they are having a pair of Epics shipped to them by the 26th and will have them up for demonstration by the 27th of August.
I just thought I would share this with anyone who is interested in the phone, but wants a hands on with it. I am not sure if other areas will be putting up the phone for demo the same day, but this is what i was told in the sacramento area.
If your in NYC, go to the AOL Time Warner center on the 3rd floor. They have the Samsung Experience exhibition where all the latest Samsung products are demonstrated. You can have full access to everything in the "store". There are no sales representatives and thus absolutely no sales pressure. Its like going to a convention center, except its right in the city. There are people who can answer questions about the devices.
I'm sure the Epic 4G as well as the other Galaxy S devices will be demonstrated/featured in that place. Its a really nice place to go to just hang out as they have fun contests and giveaways from time to time. Sometimes even live bands go their and perform. Really cool.

Thanks for this info, I'm right up the block from them. I checked there site online and they have the Captivate and the Vibrant, but no Epic yet. The only sprint phone they have is the Moment, lol. Hopefully they'll have it early next week so I can stop by and play with it.
cool, im in sac too, i guess ill be hitting up the sprint store and checking out the epic. Only thing that sucks is i dont get my upgrade til oct 1st, ima try and ask the employees if i can upgrade early not sure if it will work though.
Very cool. I'm definitely interested but would like to see it first before I shell out the money. I'll have to call my local store

Is this the CNN/Time Warner place at Columbus Circle, Broadway @ 59th? If so, i'm so there...
Ugh. My local Sprint store had NO CLUE when they would get a demo phone in. Jesus. You'd think these stores would all be given the same info.

Went to sprint corporate store in sacramento and they said no model on display til launch day.

Hey I'm in sacramento area too!
Which sprint store had a display model to play with?
I don't think I honestly care enough to drive to a Sprint store just to play with it for a minute. Its less than 3 days away now.
I am a sprint store rep and the advocate for my stores epic and I can confirm no display models till close of biz on the 30th available to the public on the 31st

I was passing by the natomas store yesterday and no luck, ill probably go next week and check it out, I can't upgrade til sept 15 so I wanna play with it and see if I want it or the evo

They are, they're just not allowed to say. Cognitive is right though, we're putting out the demo models Monday night, after hours.
I apologize everyone, i realize that the demo models were not put out on the 27th, the sprint rep i spoke was misinformed and once he found out that they were going to get the Epic on the 26th he assumed they would set it up on the 27th. This was not the case, as i found out yesterday when i went to the store. Luckily, when i went in the sprint store manager was playing with one and said he wasn't supposed to show me the phone, but since i seemed enthusiastic he would anyway. I only toyed with it for about 5 minutes, but a few things i noticed were...
1) the keyboard is very comfortable and easy to type on, and in my opinion is about as good as the touch pro 2 in usability
2)the screen dwarfs in comparison to the evos
3)touchwiz is very smooth and had no lag in my use
4)the still pictures look fantastic as does the video recording
5)build quality and sturdiness seemed inferior to the evo, but then again the evo has no moving parts like the keyboard and we all know about the supposed glass separation, so idk
Anyway i know a lot of this has been covered, but these were just major things that i noticed.
On a final note, as much as i told the sprint manager i was interested in buying the Epic, he was very keen on trying to sell me the Evo right then and there. I wonder why?

Because a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.
Between the two, which one felt ergonomically better in your hand?
Epic is on limited release. Demos will be few and far in between. However, my Radioshack has had an Epic in stock since mid August hahaha

I found the epic to be more comfortable in my hand, however this is not to say the evo was uncomfortable, just that i prefer the epic.
My only problem with the Epic's keyboard is muscle memory. Coming from a TP2, the shift button is above the FN button. On the Epic the FN button is above the shift button.
Over the course of a few days, it's resulted in more than a few odd typos.
Given time I'll get used to it. Otherwise initial impressions of the keyboard are good.

do you think t-mobile will run out of the vibrant on launch day? the reason i'm asking is that i don't get off work til late afternoon and i hope they don't sell out.
you will get one tomorrow , there aren't many people mind vibrant

At my store we got a pretty good supply of them, unlike the HD2. Its doubtful it will sell out but you could call your local store and see if they are willing to hold one for you till end of day.
I called my local T-Mobile Store yesterday, and they are holding a Vibrant for me til the end of the day, and they only got 4 in

I talked to a clerk and she said they were getting 15. Which she considered a lot. Said they only got 5 HD2 when it was released.
Still I'm not taking chances and will be at the store before it opens.

I'm with you, I know that it's not like the iphone that people get crazy and stuff but I'll be there before they open just in case
I'll be heading out in about 10-15 minutes to go procure my vibrant. gonna show up a couple minutes early. I thought the HD2 launch was gonna be slow, and I was wrong on that, I showed up 10 minutes early then and there was already like 8 people waiting
I just called the one near me, he said they got about 60 of them. No need to try to have them hold one.
Gonna pick it up after work. New Android phone to play with! Yay!
Sadly I'm out of town and I'm not able to go roaming around for a T-mobile store so I ordered mine via CC service. They didn't seem to think there would be any shortages any time soon. I would be worried that they would run out of those screens since others like the Evo have been having issues.
When I get home mine should be waiting for me.
I was the only customer waiting at my store when I picked up my Vibrant. I was thankful I didn't have to wait in a line, but part of me hopes that popularity of the Vibrant grows. I'd like the largest dev community on the TMobile version of the Galaxy S.
The change in release date a week out might of changed initial demands?
I think Samsung has a LOT of the devices around though to be honest, and if a store ran out, tmobile will still have them in stock at a warehouse and be in stock within a day or two.

True. The first clerk I spoke with at our downtown store thought the date was the 21st.
when i picked up my vibrant today, there were a few people purchasing it, however the clerk said that the mytouch slide had a line thouroughout the day on it's release date. i guess the reason being is that t-mobile advertised the **** out of the mytouch. even in the store all you see is the mytouch all ove the place. i guess if t-mobile advertised this phone as much as the mytouch slide then more people would've been there purchasing the phone.
I've read around somewhere that Samsung is going to be doing the advertising more than the carriers. I haven't seen any on TV or online, so I'm not sure if Samsung is going to start it any time soon.
I walked into the T-Mobile corp. store here in town around 11 CST. There were exactly one customer per sales rep, and the only other person in there looking for the vibrant was another guy from my job.
They had not even opened the shipping case of Vibrants until he arrived there. No displays, they had a demo unit, but it was locked in the drawer under one of the cash registers. They didn't even know if they were supposed to be selling them today.
I couldn't believe the total lack of advertising they had up--I'm talking none at all. Their "showcase" device was still the MTS. Go figure.
I just went to the Sprint store (< 20 min ago) to have them look at my EVO to see if the 4G radio was broken, simply because I rarely get a 4G signal, even in places marked 5 bars on Sprint's website. Anyway, the guy there said that the discrepancy was to be fixed by an update (when I asked what kind of update, he would only say: "from HTC") within the next couple of weeks. Supposedly this update will bring 4G performance in line with Sprint's coverage maps. He also said that Sprint Corporate finished training yesterday on the use of 2.2 on the EVO, which he told me was done being developed and soon to be released. He said that "2.2" will also increase WiMax range. When I asked him to confirm that 2.2 meant Froyo, he said yes.
So it appears that WiMax is about to get a huge range boost and Froyo is about to be released.
So it looks like Sprint is stepping up its support for this phone quite a bit. Great news that were not being abandoned until at least 2.2 has been out for a while.
I would not believe a word any sprint store employee says except maybe derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Yeah, unfortunately sprint store employees more often than not, are talking out their arse. I wish we could believe him, but even HTC only said "by Christmas".
froyo for evo in Q4 2010/Q1 2011 if were lucky.
By Christmas only means it will be sometime before Christmas people and even then it was about all of their devices including the Slide
While I don't think we'll get it before Q4, I can see HTC's reasoning behind saying Christmas.
That gives them a big window to release it. If they deliver early, people are stoked. If they fall behind, they have a nice buffer to stay within their promised date.
Better than promising by the end of Q3 and then having a problem crop up and not release until Q4.
People are still listening to in-store employees
I don't know where this Froyo gut is being held, but I think he should be released as soon as possible. If he's being held in N Korea, we should send al Gore to negotiate for his immediate release.
This is inhuman and I hope eveyone will write their congressman.

Don't lump all of us Sprint store employees together like that please. There are plenty of us who know exactly what we are talking about. The people making up stuff just to sound important or impress people are not the norm.
I can tell you that we have received no official training or word on 2.2 or Froyo in the stores. The only official word is what has already been said about Christmas from HTC. I wish there was, I really, really do.
I used an early build from darch on my old hero and liked the speed, can't wait for that on the Evo.

Not taking it personal. It just gets old hearing the same old crappy about Sprint. I know the company earned the bad rep, but a lot if the people who still cling onto those perceptions haven't tried Sprint in years.
Oh well, it's so much easier to ruin a rep than rebuild an already bad one.

I'm totally happy with Sprint after stints with ATT and Tmobile. Never tried Verizon.
I will say the Sprint store in Daytona Beach has to be THE worst of the worst. I only go in there to check out a phone on display. That store really does hurt Sprint's reputation in the local market place.

I'm considering an EVO for me and the wife, I wanted to wait on the Samsung Epic, but there still isn't an announced release date, and I'm a little worried about the openness of Samsung with their drivers (and the 'hackability' of the Galaxy S phones).
I went to Sprint yesterday and they said they are backordered on EVOs for 4 weeks. That is just crazy. Our Verizon contract expired yesterday and I'm itching for new phones, so I thought I could probably hit the Radio Shacks and Best Buys and see if I can get lucky (chances?). If not, I'll probably just preorder the Epic the first day it's available and if I don't like it find someone with an EVO and trade.
My main questions are the issues with the EVO I've heard. The main one was the 30FPS cap. Has this effectively been fixed by the developers here and around the internet even if it renders the HDMI out useless? Do the phones seem to be holding up okay, I had heard some complaints about build quality?
Thanks for any information...
I get 55fps (tested) with HDMI output (in theory still haven't tested). Navigation is as fast as an Iphone. Radioshack and Bestbuy all told me that it was impossible to get an evo without waiting for weeks. I called the best buy on the Hispanic side of town in San Antonio and they were stocked with a bunch of em. Just call around.

only issue with the build quality is I got a very small barely noticeable crack below the power button
bought my 4th evo on Wednesday at a local sprint store(last one they had). The guy behind me was PISSEEDDDD. first come first serve. Keeping checking the stores.
It was easy for me to get an Evo. The Sprint rep at the local store said that if you're a new customer you take priority over existing. I ordered mine from the Sprint store (because they were sold out at every location we went to.) and low and behold two days later he called me and said he just got 14 in stock and wanted to make sure I got mine before others started coming in for upgrades.
I am really enjoying the Evo so far and still tinkering on it daily. My GF says it is way to big for her interest but she did say it was a beautiful device.
EVO's are decent out of the box....
fabulous after rooting. 9.0 out of 10 for me and getting better.
After my experience with the Samsung Moment...and other Samsung products (Fridge, Blu-ray, other phones, etc...) I will be hard pressed to ever own another Samsung product. I think they rush things to market unfinished (ice marker on the fridge SUCKS..no fix, Blu-ray networking SUCKS...even for an experienced networking geek.
Amoled screens have terrific blacks. However, the resolution is less sharp to the eye due to the way they manage the RBG palette (search for details). To me they look a bit fuzzy compared to the LCD screens. My Novatec screen with the FPS fix is stunning.
THe Evo is a fine phone that will be in my pocket for awhile.
I'm going to pick mine up right now. I had to pay an old debt to sprint and they told me if they run my credit twice within 60 days it'll get flagged for fraud, so I'm hoping that doesn't happen. I don't know if they ran my credit when I payed that debt or not.
Let us know how you like yours!!
I have it since 8:10. I'm transferring the information from my Evo to it. I bought a really cool case with it.
Going to get mine at lunch time. Sprint store is about 6minutes away, hopefully they dont take the other 54min to get me paid and activated.
Yeah. Got mine and rooted it already. Waiting for a nandroid capable recovery and nand unlock. Cases at sprint were not that great. I might stop by bb today or tomorrow and get a screen pro put on it and see if they have better cases. Sprint had a neat dock but obviously you can't dock if you have a case.

Same here. Another person was there picking up the Epic, but other than that, we were alone in the store.
Initial Impressions
Very quick impressions...
Capacative buttons work absolutely FINE.
Going through the menu setting up various things the phone flies.
Email setup is much more of a pain the BB but I expected that and went through the same thing with the EVO
The phone has less of a 3G signal in my office thatn the EVO did but at least it's a solid one bar whereas my 9650 Bold would drop every call. Sprint sent me an Airwave yesterday to use in the office so once I get that up and running I'll be good to go. I have a strong 4g signal at home so I'll try that out this evening.
Absolutely love the screen. If you don't have an EVO sitting next to it for comparison, the screen is plenty big enough.
Keyboard is excellent
I'm guessing it's tyhe rounded corners...the phone is much more comfortable in the hand than the EVO was and for perhaps the same reason, fits much better in the pocket.
Looks great...I sense no "cheapness" factor to it at all.
I'll have more input after I get a chance to really work with it as the day progresses but I'm very happy with the decision to go with this device.
Edit/Delete Message
Further Updates on Call / Sound Quality and GPS:
Having spent the morning on the phone now, I have to say...for someone who wears hearing aids (me), the call quality both on the earpiece in the front and the rear speaker is simply the best I've ever experienced with wither BB or my previous EVO.
Totally impressed and that alone makes this phone worth it to me.
Interestingly, while the EPIC shows only one bar whereas the EVO used to show 2-3 here in my office, the EVO would drop about every third call and the connection was obviously poor. At one bar, the EPIC sounds darn solid.
GPS locked on in seconds from within my office and put me right where I am.
Fired up Sprint Nav, put my house in for a destination and much more quickly than my BB 9650 ever did, it had me on the way home...even though it's not time to go home
Picked mine up at around 8:15
So far loving the keyboard amd how smooth verything seems to be. Sprin had a really cool case with a ruberized back that I decided to buy and so did te other guy getting a epic.
I miss the big screen of the evo. But the samoled screen is definitely an improvement

Picked mine up about an hour ago. I was third in line when the Sprint store opened at 8AM. By the time I left about 20 minutes later, there where at least 6 other people there all wanting the Epic. Purchased all of the available accessories including the Media Dock.
Picked mine up at 8am sharp. Wasn't $350 upfront rather $250 like BB & RS are offering. Asked rep if I had to charge the battery when I got home and said no. Powered it up and it was only 50% charged. Tested GPS with google maps, cold locked right in after I turned on locate in settings. No 4g so far and I live between baltimore and richmond 4g areas, rep said I would have it but I know he was just blowing smoke up my arse about those things. He also kindly advised me that I would be receiving an automated survey call tomorrow and to give their store a 5 out of 1 scoring. I'll think about it.
All in all, pretty pleased with the smothness, minor lag when loading up xda page. Asphalt 5(demo) ran smooth, hardware keyboard has a great feel and good key spacing, and backlit keys are a major plus.
Let the custom ROMS begin!
Just got mine about an hour ago. The only downside is the layout on it but I'm sure some custom ROMS will come soon and I can't root so the wireless tether feature is not there. Overall very nice screen and the touch screen is great. I've only played with it for a half hour so I can't say a whole lot more about it.

It's a guarantee they will, it took 15 minutes for me to buy a car charger the other day.
It took me all of 16 minutes to return the Bold 9650, have them activate the EPIC, check that it worked, buy a case and get out of the store.
I didn't bother to have them set up my email accounts as I'll do it myself.

seeing a little credit in there is nice, I have to say form all the stories i have heard about sprint being on these boards for almost a year, I have had a pleasurable experience with them, the financing department is first class, had some billing issues with them and they were as pleasant as can be. I do feel their service can be better in their stores, as My trusty evo's charging port let go back in november, and i had some rough spots tryin to get sprint to help me, so i went to htc and they resolved my issue no problems, so in a nutshell i am a happy customer!
now, do i want a design4g, epic4g touch, or photon4g? LOL
Totally agree with you. I have had a very pleasant experience with Sprint as well. Had a couple small billing issues that were fixed very quickly and drop less calls now than with Verizon. I used Verizon for 9 years but the cost was getting out of control. So far over the last 20 months, I have saved $2256 by switching. Total win
Sprint is great for the price. Just wait til network vision rolls out and coverage increases.

Grats! I remember when I got my deposit back...was stoked to have 2 free months of service basically. As far as upgrading your phone I would hold off on that. I just recently purchased the EVO 4G because I really wasn't too impressed with the newer phones. Granted they are better than the EVO but just slightly which to me isn't worth either the upgrade credit or the extra cash. Wait for some more ICS phones and then upgrade....i'm betting Samsung and HTC will come out with something great.

Which part of northern Wisconsin? I use to live in a small town(Miladore) twenty minutes north of Stevens Point.
@brad check out the epic touch 4G thats what I'm looking at haha. My one year with Sprint is coming up April 15th. I know I'm not elgible for an upgrade but I figure ill treat myself anyway haha.

right outside of bayfield wisconson hmmm hour east of superior beaaaautiful up here and no computer repair business so here i am
I agree, I have had a pleasurable experience with them, their service is excellent.
Brad, I would wait until MWC. I am having the same debate, I am going to wait for my 2 years to officially upgrade but if I get the chance to try a different handset I will. My wife needs a replacement EVO but I am kind of hoping they wont have one and we will have to get something else... we will see. But HTC is going to be launching something BIG this year!
I'm waiting it out too. Galaxy Nexus, sure it has LTE but it is last year's technology. I have very high hopes for MWC and shall be revealed there.
Out of Design, Photon, or Epic Touch?
Design has basically no development community. Smaller screen, and single core just doesn't cut it for me.
Photon has Motoblur and it is a worldphone, if you're into that kind of thing. It has a small but quality development community, jokersax has put out some good stuff for them. Unlocking the bootloader borks 4G. You can relock to fix 4G, and you can't relock with custom kernels.
Epic Touch used to have Loss of Signal, which was an absolute pain. It is pretty much gone now. Took a while to get AOSP on it, but they have accomplished. They have the strongest development community out of the three. I think it is BML but I'm not sure. If it is, hopefully they will be able to convert it to MTD sometime in the near future.
OR wait
i can never wait for my upgrade i have about 4 months til my contract is up ... sadly i maybe switching to the evil empire (at&t) :/
thanks guys! think im gonna wait, love my evo to death, and i just got a kindle fire so i got a new device to hold me over haha!
you guys are the best

Hahaha I know that feeling all too well. I dropped my LG Optimus S a few months back and the screen just stopped working and I remember hoping I wouldn't be able to fix it so that I would be forced to get a new phone
I was a year and 6 months with sprint when they cancel my contact, for data usage when I was on unlimited data plan. Don't be, glad be sad haa ha

Have you considered calling them and letting them know that you have no service at your house. I was having the same problem as I live in a small town in southern california and they sent me a free airave. Granted its not the best solution in the world but it will provide you with coverage in your home as long as you have high speed internet.
I've had a few minor ups and down with Sprint as far as billing went, but next to nil issues with repairs or phone service. I wish it was my first year again. I've been with Sprint for close to a decade now.
As far as a new phone goes, I'm with one of the previous posters. There's yet to been a phone released that has made me want to make the switch. Especially due to many of the awesome ROMS that been developed for our phones in the past year or so. In some cases, it's literally like having a new phone every few months. lol

yes i have considered that but atm with google voice intergration i can still text fine over wifi so im content on waiting a little til i have more concrete plans and my internets its through phone company (it was through my cable in my previous town so i just hooked up a land line and/or use skype) thanks for the suggestion.
and my ex got the airave since it was tied to her plan damnit
I've been with Sprint since '99... And I've definitely had my ups and downs. Overall I'm very happy with my plan, unlimited, my Airave at no charge to boost signal at the house and my E4G that has a very mature development community... But I'm really hoping to see some quad core hotness released in the next few months...
