So I hard reset my phone. And used the stock backup app to recover contacts txt and all the rest
Strange thing is everytime I soft reset phone. or turn it. Off and on again my contacts are gone. All the rest off the data stays like texts nd bookmarks

Actually, sounds like the backup is working fine, but there's something wrong with your phone's memory... try another hard reset and restore contacts, etc. again.
Maybe its an issue with auto sync? turn that off, restore n c what happens!!

the problmen axctually stems from the fact there wasno data connection available when restoring
this morning i did a restore and everything is working fine
Strangely tele2 sweden also experienced trouble with data connection this morning. I could make phone calls but there was no data connection at all. Any other networks noticed this?

So I go to Sprint today to move phone numbers between phones on my account. Everything is great until my hero won't connect for data. Nothing we tried worked. I am running Fresh 2.1.1. So they really got confused with menus not working or not being in the right places. Especially problematic was the fact that I could not update my profile. Clicking on it did nothing in my Rom.
So I left with np data. I knew that it must have something to do with my unofficial Rom, but there is no way I am giving up root. So, I went back to the office, did a nandroid backup, restored my original stock Sprint 1.5 android and updated my profile. Voila we have data! Then I restored my fresh 2.1 nandroid and everything still works.
Moral of this story? I hope you have a good 1.5 backup if you ever need to change the number on the phone and data does not come back, and maybe this story will help someone else out in the future.

If that happens again just try turning off mobile network and turn it back on.
I had a problem with one of the ROMs where I would lose data after about a day and all I had to do was toggle it off and on.
...Everything seems fine, browsers work, phone works, connected to wifi (so it says), background working, tried to dowload updates the dowlad bars show but no progress, tried to down load free and paid apps, again down load bars show but no progress.
did a couple of soft resets still the same, Ill leave it over night in case the app store is down then try a hard reset, unless someone comes up with an answer before then.
I had this same problem with a Samsung Captivate. ATT couldn't help(after swapping sims, making sure I had the correct data plan listed), Samsung couldn't help(after broken English conversation for an hour), nothing in the forums helped. I could only solve it by hard resetting the phone, but the problem came back after 3 days. I never found out what caused it, I just returned the phone. Try the market using 3G, I doubt this will help, but once my Streak wouldn't download apps over wifi this week, so i turned wifi off and BAM back in business B-)

Hi, I had this issue when I first got my Streak, I had to log into the Talk app with my gmail address and then the downloads started
Hi,
today I installed JPO through a reg hack and everything went very well. Now I've my good froyo... With a major problem: I can't send or read sms. If I open the SMS app, it will show the msg list, if I try opening one the phone starts vibrating and the app crashes. Same thing if I try to write.
I tried to wipe the cache partition, I tried to clear the application data. No way.
One good thing from this update: the RECOVERY MODE now WORKS, never worked before (at most I could get the DOWNLOAD MODE work by flashing something with Odin).
One neutral thing: GPS still sucks. It's really hard to see my girlfriend poor HTC Tattoo being fast and precise in GPS reception, while mine sucks so much. Really the bloody Tattoo can get so accurate it's scarying.
Anyway HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS SMS issue!?!? I Need to use them!
Which country/network? Have you tried an alternative SMS app like chompsms or handcent?
It's a T-Mobile (anyway it was debranded when I did the JM1 update a month ago). UK.
No I didn't try handcent sms. I'd like the standard one to work!
Do you think that a factory reset could work
same thing happened to me the day before yesterday - reflash and factory reset cured it for me
I also had the same problem. The factory reset helped me. No reflashing was needed.
I had the same problem. Factory reset was not enough, reflashing was needed. Also, it seems like it can be "preserved" in backuped settings of Messaging application - it returned when I restored these settings from Titanuim Backup after reflashing, so be careful
Hi guys,
I tried to do a search but didn't find anything that worked...
I've been recently losing my 3g/1x data connection a lot for long periods of time (30 min or more). It's annoying since I can't check my e-mail, or listen to Pandora, basically all the things I got this phone for since I'm limited to what I can do on my computer at work.
Anyway, is there a bizarro fix for this? I've tried rebooting the phone, airplane mode on/off, and updating my profile. I remember with my old medium intelligence phone I could tell it to check my e-mail or something and trick it into waking up the data but no such luck as the phone complacently accepts there's a connection error.
Thanks in advance!
You may want to try letting folks know if you are running stock or a custom rom, which one it is and what modem version. Whenever I run into strange issues with my phone that isn't attributed to the rom I'm running, I just ODiN back and reflash through the process and that usually takes care of most problems. G'luck.
I have noticed mine does that too occasionally. Turning 4g on and then back off usually makes 3g start working again for me.
In my case my phone sometimes has trouble finding 3g after using wifi for a while, toggling 4g almost always makes 3g work again.

Oh right! I'm just on the stock rom.
Toggling 4g and wifi doesn't work for me. Thanks for the suggestion though.
It happens more at work so it probably has something to do with that. I generally always end up roaming but I haven't had trouble in the past with using roaming data. It still says unlimited on the Sprint account website and will come back every once and a while. (I know because it'll notify me of new mail or something random.)
are you in an area of low reception? that could cause it but not sure if there is a work around for it...
this same thing happens to my wife's epic.but not regularly..
I updated the prl and seems to stopped doing it,,
I was having the same issue coming out of Airplane mode. The 3G was coming back sporadically and then not at all. I called Sprint support and they had me do a phone Restore through the service menu ##3282# (you need your MSL) and it reset the phone like it was going through the activation process. It wasn't a factory reset so I didn't have to reinstall any apps. It did work the first time but after that it started happening again.
I finally went into the Sprint store and they did a hard reset, which is the same as a factory reset (I think) Settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset. That was a couple of days ago and I haven't had the problem since.
Unfortunately, this requires completely wiping out your installed apps. I was on the stock rom and unrooted so I hadn't backed up with Titanium Backup (needs root). But I did use AppBak to backup my list of apps so that it was easier to restore them from the Market. If anyone knows a way to backup and restore similar to Titanium, that doesn't require root, let me know.
I was having the same problem with mine and nothing worked so they gave me another one. If it's that bad call sprint tech or take it they will probably give you another one

I use "Sprite Mechanic" for backing up my APK's to SD card. It only recognizes market and 3rd party installed apps. Can be found in the market for free.

Recently I've ad this problem where whatsapp sometimes enters some kind of idle mode and then it doesn't check for new messages for a long time unless I enter the app myself. Sometimes it's fine and sometimes it just does this...
I've recently deleted a few things which I hoped were bloatware, hopefully this hasn't affected the situation.
Any help appreciated.
I had this issue..
I did factory data reset and then its fixed..
But if you try then back up first..

What does factory reset actually reset? Do I lose any apps/data? I'm not sure if it's a full phone reset or..

Factory reset will clean your os..
All bad files will go, your phone will clean from all errors, like new phone..
Yes, you will loose your phone memory include all apps, sms, related to phone memory..
So, better to backup first is necessary..
U can backup apps by app called "app backup and restore" from playstore, it will targer all apps to external sd card and will save..
But for big data app like asphalt or any downloaded big data game, you need to backup manually, go to settings then application, then select sd card tab, then backup..
Or manually method for save big data apps, go to file manager then select phone memory then select the folder "android" then see data folder then backup which file you want..

There's already been a long discussion on this in another thread. A simple search would have helped you find it. This issue is mostly seen when you're using wifi rather than mobile data, and I've noticed it on multiple phones, not just the S4. It seems more like a whatsapp issue than the phone's issue.

Are you using Greenify or some other tool to freeze/hibernate apps.
This happened to me when I Greenify whatsapp app.
I notice that my phone gets notifications, whether it be Whatsapp or email, faster when I'm on 4G (Telstra, for those in Australia) vs wifi. Push notifications come almost instantly when on 4G. When on wifi (thats wireless N, connected to a 100mbps down 2mbps up cable connection) notifications can be delayed by up to a minute.
Previously when I was with a worse carrier (Vodafone AU) notifications on 3G (they only had 3G) would be significantly delayed and wifi was superior.
So my conclusion is that the network you're connected to determines whether or not notifications are delayed. However, I'd like to know why my 4G is superior to wifi, hope someone with more technical knowledge can chime in.
