Question about unlocking & rooting - Legend General

I have a HTC Legend, Bell branded, that I unlocked using a code that I bought online. I'm now thinking about rooting the phone and I was wondering if I do, will that mess up the unlock? Even if it did, could I just enter the code again?
I'm new to the android scene, so I'm sorry for the noob question.

Good question, I didn't root mine but I did flash it with another RUU and it's still unlocked

Where did you get the unlock code?

I'm considering unlocking mine too because I'm suspicious that Bell won't update us to 2.2, considering the fact that they no longer sell the phone.

Very true but I contact HTC about the Legend not being sold at Bell anymore and the froyo update, they said that the HTC Legend not being sold is a rumor and that Froyo will be released in September. Maybe its a cover up?

Maybe, but I don't trust Bell one bit, especially not when it comes to support and customer service. If they aren't selling it anymore, I'm expecting the worst.

I totally agree with you. Today at the local mall, I went to the Bell Kiosk, not the actual store. So I saw two Bell sales rep because they were wearing the Bell T-Shirt and I mentioned that I bought an HTC Legend a few weeks ago and I heard that Bell won't be selling them due to AMOLED issues with HTC, then asked if there will be a Froyo update and when. All they did was nod their head saying no and said "No idea, sorry"...

Telus HTC Hero, can it be unlocked

Can the Telus HTC Hero be unlocked, without having any telus sim or being activated on telus in any way at all? I'm on Bell but want an android device. Was thinking of buying it, unlocking it, and throwing in a Bell sim.
unlock?
I am looking for the same answer, it should be able to get unlocked question is has anyone don it yet.
Unlocked and android 2
Better yet lets see it unlocked and android 2 installed!
There is a guy on eBay selling unlock code for the Telus Hero (try searching "telus hero"). If you are willing to shell out 25 bucks, you may want to try that. He said that he would refund you if his code didn't work.
Telus does not lock the phone, that's what the CSR told me. Pretty much u can put in any sim card to make it work.

That's really good news for us AT&T guys!!! I just need to buy one now, from what I hear Telus will not ship to the USA.
So far, actually buying one is the biggest issue. There's been discussion both here at XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=580418
and on some other forums, such as:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=1585687
About buying it. Apparently both Best Buy and Walmart in Canada have them, but only sell them in the store and won't ship them. (Best Buy's is on their website, but Walmart's doesn't seem to be).
I'm an AT&T subscriber that's been keeping an eye out for a way to buy a Telus HTC Hero. If I lived close to Canada, I'd drive up and get one, but I live in Georgia, so it's a bit far. I hope somebody finds a place online or something.
I'd be careful about believing the Telus CSR info that the phone is unlocked. Somebody posted on Boy Genius Report that they bought one and the phone IS locked.
See user "k386" comment here:

I just bought a Telus Hero from Best Buy today, and I can tell you that the phones are LOCKED. Bought a code off a website and unlocked it, it is now usable on Rogers, but I'm with bell, so I will have to get a Bell Sim tomorrow.

thanks for the heads up
I just got my brand new Hero from Telus at square one.
I then put my Rogers sim card in.
I unlocked it successfully through mobileincanada.com it took 10 minutes to receive the unlock code.
Everything is working great so far. Except for wifi ... having issues connecting to any hot spots? it may be just weak signal or something ... will do some more investigating.
btw. My old phone was the HTC HERMES (I loved it for many years) but it's time to move on
Hey all right! Congratulations!

So, just checking: You live in Canada, right? You didn't drive there from USA, right?
I'm just looking at this from afar. So that mall has a main Telus store and a satellite store. For the smaller store, I see that the store mgr or seller provides a non-telus email address. So, for those who want this phone, i don't guess you'd think he'd sell & ship them, right?
Because what were the requirements to buy the phone? I'm just curious since so many people in US are trying to find a source where to buy these phones from.
How much did mobileincanada charge to unlock? And would they be a possible source for buying telus phones, and re-selling & shipping, at a markup, to USA?

This is how I feel about my T-mobile Wing... My unlocked Europe/GSM version of the Hero arrives tomorrow. I wanted the brown color Then I should just have to call up t-mobile's data group and get the settings to use it, with my swapped out sim card, right? (I know, i know, i won't get 3G. That's okay with me. there are many tradeoffs)
You don't need to meet any requirements to buy the phone outright. Other than having the cash to do so
I've bought 3 this week for USA members to ship to them. Was no biggie.

Yes that's who I'm doing it for
I am waiting mine to arrive (my friend in Canada bought and shipped it to me).
Just now I went to HTC Canada's website and looked at the spec again:
Dual mode UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (900/2100MHz for
EU/Asia, 850/1900 for US and 850/2100 for Telstra)
It's funny how they list 850/1900 for US on HTC Canada's website, as if the phone was designed to work in the US. They could have put it much better by saying "850/1900 for Telus"... Only AT&T uses 850/1900 here in the US, and NO I don't think AT&T is carrying any Android device in the near future.
It's like "Hey, friends across the borders. I am sorry for making the Hero exclusively on CDMA networks in your country, but you know what, here is something that you may like."

Unlocked X10a

It seems that the majority of X10's in the market seem to be the X10i variant, however I am trying to locate the X10a, so I can use it with AT&T 3G.
I found a few small retailer sites that do say they offer the x10a, but seeing as they aren't exactly the most reputable of online stores, I am a bit hesitant to order.
Has anyone found unlocked X10a's sold directly from SE? Or is my only option to get one from a wireless provider outside the US that supports AT&T 3G bands such as Rogers?
Yup, or from a Canadian/US seller on Ebay, or from a Canadian friend who owes you a big favor.
go to amazon and search "xperia x10a" there is one that is 564.99. it doesnt say which bands are on it, the others that come up with the search all say 900/1700/2100. you might could call the seller or amazon and see if it is the x10a or x10i. they should be able to look at the box and tell you.
cant find anywhere other than that possibility. I bought one off of ebay. most expensive thing i have ever bought on ebay, scared me to death, but everything turned out fine. just look for a reputable seller on ebay with lots of positive feedback, use paypal, hope for the best.
i can say this, i love this phone, also using it on ATT. with the rumors that ATT are forcing nexus one users to use the $30 data plan instead of the $15 ($10 on family plan), i couldnt come up with a better android phone to use on ATT.
i can unlock x10
hi everyone, i can unlock x10 via code. email me at [email protected] and include your contact number.
just wait, X10 is coming to AT&T.
Thanks for the input guys.
I've found a site that sells it for about $614 and free shipping. They accept Paypal payments, so at least I feel a little safer with their buyer protection. I'll let you guys know when/if I receive the correct product.
As for waiting for AT&T to start carrying the X10, that's not an option for me for a few reasons. First, my N97 is on it's way out. It's beginning to seem really sluggish and the slide lock key fell off... Second is that I have the unlimited data plan, and would not like to be forced to downgrade to their 2GB data cap. Lastly, after hearing how AT&T is locking down some aspects of their Android software such as in the HTC Aria, I would rather not let them get their hands on my phone.

I remember reading this about eight months ago and now with the Samsung Captivate headed there I can't see them bringing in the X10.

Ouch, rogers quoted me 499 plus
Just posting a follow up.
I received my X10 last night, only took about a week, i suspect had i ordered the phone on monday morning instead of night, I would have had it by Friday.
I did receive an X10a, but it was a Rogers branded phone, already sim-unlocked.
If anyone wants the seller information so they can order it for themselves, pm me.
Just curious, but how could you tell it was rogers branded? Was there a rogers startup screen, or rogers apps somewhere, or physical rogers logo on the phone exterior or something? The reason i ask is because i bought mine used on ebay, and when i popped my att sim in and powered up, there was never any hint that it had anything to do with rogers, or any other carrier. I have just always wondered if there was some way to figure out where the phone originated from. I checked th service info or system info or whateverr from the secret menu, but all it said was custom. Anyway, glad you got your hands on one. I got it as my first android phone, came from a nokia n95, and overall have been pleased with it. Certain things i miss, but the goods have definitely outweighed the bads.

Yup, there is a Rogers screen after the initial Sony Ericsson screen. Also, there are a couple of Rogers apps, the moxier apps.
Most important, whether Rogers or stock, if it is a X10a, it should say so under settings -about phone -model number - x10a.
Oh, it is definitely an x10a, came in a sony ericsson box with x10a on the barcode and everything, and in the device info is listed as an x10a, has the att 3g bands and works fine. I have just been curious since I got it if it originally came from a wireless carrier in another country. When I bought the thing, I thought that the only x10a models that were made were made for rogers, i wasnt aware that they even made a generic, factory unlocked, unbranded version of the x10a.
btw, i believe moxier apps are standard on all xperia x10's, regardless of i or a designation, or carrier branding.
Yeah, the Rogers carrier logo on boot was the dead giveaway for me. Also the fact that I couldn't manually change configure the AT&T apn until I unbranded it.
I am pleasantly surprised by the speed of the X10 though. It puts my hd2 to shame.

HTC Legend reaches end of life at Bell

phandroid.com/2010/08/20/bells-htc-legend-already-hitting-end-of-life-due-to-supply-constraints/
What does this mean to those of us that just got one? Will they still roll out the Froyo update (if it ever comes out)?
It would have been nice to know this last month when I got it.
Froyo is coming for Legend. Wether Bell release it or not is another matter, and something you need to ask them.
I could consider goldcard and debranding ASAP and then just pick up the HTC updae when it arrives in the next few weeks.
Damn, that was a short lived phone launch. I got one last month and now they're discontinuing it. Good thing I'm rooted and can just install FroYo when it comes out, just in case Bell doesn't want to launch it for the Legend.

Which method did you use to root it? I've been toying with the idea (since I don't see much benefit in doing it yet) but if Bell stops supporting it entirely (including Froyo update) then I may have no choice.
Go to the developers section and look for the downgrade post and then run that, it should downgrade your bootloader to .0001 instead of. 0003 and then you can root it using the Modaco root tutorial. After that you can install custom roms.

AMOLED Supply Issues
The supply issue Bell is referring to, is a display one.
HTC is unable to acquire OLED from Samsung as the demand for the displays is too high.
As a result, HTC is unable to produce large quantities of the Legend and other AMOLED phones.
I would imagine another phone from HTC taking it's place such as the Aria (that has an LCD instead of OLED).
I'm glad I have my Legend ...as I love the AMOLED and unibody.

Above is not completely correct .Correct in that there is a shortage in amoled display, incorrect in that the device will not be produced anymore .. The new batches desires and Legends will have slcds ( super lcd, sony technique) ..Wass issues as an official press release by HTC here in the Netherlands .. The first desires here in the Netherlands with slcds are allready being sold.

No you don't need to root it but you'll need to build a goldcard, run a search on the forum
I'm with Virgin Mobile and apparently, they will continue to sell the Legend.
I just hope that Bell doesn't screw it's customers by not offering Froyo.
Bell is currently selling the HTC Legend for $399.99 without a contract in Vancouver.
Just unbrand your Legend and get OTA updated directly from HTC (not bell).
--io
If I unbrand my Legend, I mean do a sim unlock. Will it still work fine with Bell Canada?
A SIM unlock is different then debrand.* SIM Unlocking will let you use a different providers SIM Card than your current.* If you are with Bell and purchased a Bell Legend, SIM Unlocking will let you use your phone with Rogers, Fido, Telus.
*
What you need to do is create a GoldCard and unbrand your phone by flashing the original HTC Legend Firmware that isn't customized to a provider.
*
Instructions are already posted on the forum, seek and you shall find.

i love this phone having had a dozen or so in the last few years. mine is at&t unlocked so im sure the rogers one must be unlockable as well.
I just ordered one from dell after reading what froyo 2.2 can do on the streak which makes the streak a perfect device for me. The only downside is that it's locked to rogers, althought I'm on rogers network but i would love to have the flexibility to use other carriers in the event I am traveling aboard. I read somewhere that unlocking service is available but it's expensive - over $100. I checked with dell before I ordered and they said they don't offer the unlocking code. Now the last resource is going after rogers which I have not done yet, and I probably will do and just have to wait a little bit because it's still new until rogers put up the streak on their website.
I plan on using it on bell and rogers and just switch sim cards. My galaxy s is buggy as hell it will be sent away for 4 or 5 weeks for the second time and rogers doesnt work where I work but it the only other phone out in canada that I'm intrested in. well I don't mined paying 100 dollars to get it unlocked. What unlock site can be trusted.

I ordered one from Dell Canada on November 9 and the scheduled delivery date is this Thursday, November 18. When I read yesterday that unlocked Streaks are coming to the US in a few weeks with Froyo pre-loaded, I called Dell customer service (located in India) and asked to cancel my order. My order was still showing as "Not shipped" as of yesterday. The CSR told me that my order has almost gone through the manufacturing process and it is too late to cancel it now. He said I could refuse to take delivery when Purolator delivers it to me and that my money will be refunded. That's what I plan to do. I don't know if or when Dell Canada will sell the unlocked Streak, so I may have to get it from Dell USA.

I read about the unlocked version will be available soon in the US but I doubted that the unlocked version will be highly for T-Mobile users which is not compatible with rogers / at&t. Dell has exclusive contract with at&t and thus would not sell unlocked version compatible with at&t/rogers.

Unless things have changed in the last four days since I wrote to those guys, they said they cannot unlock the Dell Streak. It even says so on their website for the Dell Streak. I am not able to post the link, but when you go to the link you provided above, click on Rogers (it is at the top where they show the wireless carriers), then scroll down and click on 'Streak Dell of Rogers'. At the bottom of that page you will see where they say they cannot unlock the Streak. As I mentioned, to cross-check on that, I wrote them four days ago and they wrote back saying "No, sorry", they cannot unlock it.
When will rogers carry them in store i need the phone ASAP and can't get it mailed to me?
hmmm, thats weird. My email was sent today once I got confirmation of my new Streak being shipped. My email also included the IMEI, so maybe they quickly ran it. ????? Since they offer a good refund clause, I will try it when the phone shows up and let everyone know.

Rogers is selling outright for $599 and Dell is selling only $549 ........ Interesting. I bought mine from Dell and it will take weeks to get the phone but I could save $50.
I bought mine from rogers outright to use on fido.I got a rebel sim to unlock it and it worked.
I just went to the Mobileincanada website, put in the IMEI #, click on the button "Check if We can unlock your phone" and it gets back "Yes we can unlock your Dell Streak". At $20, I think this is a good deal ! Maybe I'll unlock it ... but then, I don't have any other Carrier's SIM to test.
If you put your IMEI code and it said it could then go ahead cause when i enter mine it says they can't unlock my streak at the moment. So i'm stuck with the Rebel sim card and there is no way i'm send it through the mail.
Rogers is providing unlock codes now

Need some info on Aria

So finally my gf is going to get her first smartphone!!! I think I am moreexcited about it than she is.... big steps in life..
anyways I had suggested the aria for her...well the only way to get it now is through att online.. not in any stores as they are going to discontinue it...
my question is I have been reading so far that it cannot be rooted and hacked once its been updated... is that like a forever thing? or can it be downgraded then flashed?
also does anyone know if it comes from att online already updated and set up?
I dont want her to get this phone if it is completely locked down...
the only other phones I suggested are the atrix and inspire.. however she likes the phones but she thinks they are just too big..
right now it looks like the atrix is going to be the way to go.... especially if this phone comes updated and unrootable.....
please any thought would help out.. especially if anyone knows if att updates the phone before they mail it to you.
thanks,

If it comes from AT&T with the Froyo 2.2 update applied, then it will be un-rootable, even if you downgrade back to 2.1.
If they are discontinuing the Aria, then I would say the chances are that the current stock on hand does not have the Froyo 2.2 update on it are very good and it's worth taking a chance on.
A couple things:
Are you starting new service with AT&T, or eligible for an upgrade and thus getting the phone at a discounted/free price OR
Are you paying full no-commitment pricing as you are already AT&T customer?
Either way, you might want to look at http://wireless.amazon.com/HTC-Aria-Android-Phone-AT/dp/B003RCJA6S/ref=sh_br_ph_12?ie=UTF8&transaction=INDIVIDUAL_NEW. Their price is good if you are buying the phone outright, it's where I purchased mine. You can also start new service or do upgrades via them as well I think. Their return policy is also sweet, you get up to 30 days to return the phone in case your girlfriend doesn't like it.
Mine came with Android 2.1 OS and I had it rooted and a custom ROM loaded on within an hour of opening the box!

Mine was purchased through the online store and it had 2.1 on it. So the chances are quite good you'll be able to root.

This is what I did and the phone came with 2.1. that was 6 weeks ago. Rooted and rommed...
So wait - if the phone has been updated to 2.2, it can NEVER be rooted and modded, like EVER?
That may change my eBay buying habits for this phone...

Its possible it may never happen. It all depends on whether someone figures out how to crack the newer hboot.

Oooh. That's scary.
You might try HERE. They are listed as having the 2.1 OS.
I need it unlocked to use up here in Canada - hence my worry about it coming with 2.2 on it. I'm just going to try to communicate with the eBay sellers and hope they know what they are talking about.
Unlocking a phone for use on other carriers is completely separate from rooting and installing custom ROMs. You can unlock a phone that has AT&T official 2.2 update on it.
Yeah, but wouldn't I be stuck with a bunch of AT&T apps I could never use in Canada?

Thank you so much for this link! I've been looking at the Aria as my first Android phone, but AT&T only offers a refurbished one as an upgrade. I could get the refurb Aria for $0 or an Inspire for $99 through AT&T. Like the OP's girlfriend, I don't like the size of the Inspire. Also looked at the Captivate, but it seems big too.
At Amazon, I got a new Aria for $50. They added the extra data plan at checkout. Should get it Tuesday.
