SIP/voip - EVO 4G General

Anyone using SIP or voip on their evo?
Would be a lot easier of skype was available, but seems like there is no alternative.

Sipdroid and Fring should both do SIP. I have tried Sipdroid myself (not on Evo though) and it worked OK.

I am Using
FRING >[SIP]>Gizmo5>>GoogleVoice>
it works great.

Just open an account at sipdroid.com and it works like Gizmo. They will assign you a phone number that you can use. I do this and it works great.

sipdroid.com just redirects me to their google page. Did you mean
https://www1.pbxes.com
?
Edit: registered with pbxes, and tried to input the info into sipdroid, but it says it can't register because of 404 error. :S
Edit2: Got sip configured with pbxes, but when i try to call out, it just automatically hangs up. Tried with and without google voice.
Googled my problem, and seems people have been having the same problem as me

Quick and easy solution that I found, which is 100% free:
1) Get Google Voice, set it up for your cellphone.
2) Sign up for Sipgate One. Yes, it only has limited numbers (like only in LA), but that doesn't matter.
3) Remove all forwarding options on Sipgate (aka, get rid of voicemail, busy, etc.)
4) Add Sipgate to Fring.
5) Add your Sipgate number to Google Voice.
Now people can call your GVoice and you can answer via Sipgate/Fring, and to make calls, just get on a computer, open up Google Voice's web page, and initiate the call from there. All Sipgate inbound (to your Sipgate number from any phone) are free.

Sorry, my bad. I meant sipgate.com. Signup for an account with them, then use sipdroid and GV Dialer. You will need a Google Voice account. Works perfect. When making a call through GV dialer, it will dial out and call you back through your Sipgate number and the call is answered through Sipdroid.
Sounds complicated but very easy to setup and use and works perfect. If you need detailed instructions, let me know and I can post them.

Any standard SIP provider should work. There are countless VoIP companies that provide service via SIP.

Search for nimbuzz in market. Add your Skype profile. Done.

[GUIDE] SIPdroid & Google Voice setup (updated 3-12-2010)

The guides listed here are extremely dated.
Not all services mentioned allow new users, and some now require a subscription. Also, the process has been simplified greatly since the creation of these tutorials.
I recommend using an application such as Groove IP to connect directly to Gtalk rather than bounce the call all over the place to different SIP providers.
Trying to find a way to verify GV w/o a active U.S. phone number? This info will still work for that, but you have to use IPKall routed to PBXes extension w/ "info" as DTMF type on (pbxes extension) settings.
Planning to do something more interesting like route multiple gv#s to one place? Than the info might still be useful to you, but only as a point of reference.
These instructions will explain how to get Sipdroid and Google Voice set up so you can use your Android phone with only WiFi or 3g/Edge (no cellular minutes). It also provides a solution to get Google Voice accounts validated for people who lack a US phone number.
Alright I guess these guides were a little more popular than expected. Kept exceeding bandwidth limits for the images, so I had to move 'em.
If you would like to view the original guides please visit my blog

While I didn't personally use the method myself, a post on the Google Voice discussion forum said you can perform your verification call on a Gizmo number (receive it by logging into the flash client at gizmo5.com)
The first time I set up an ipkall DID, it took a week. Kind of annoying.
Due to bandwidth limits causing the images to go down, I have moved the guides.
gurnted said:
Huh? I tried to use Gizmo to confirm my wife's account a couple weeks ago, and Google Voice said a Landline or Mobile had to be used as the primary forwarding number. If they have in fact changed their policy regarding this, its great news for international users. Maybe someone with a fresh account would be kind enough to give it a try and bless us with the results. Either way thanks for the info.

Well, I read that information roughly a month ago so it could have been changed. On Gizmo's gizmovoice.com page, they state that a user can buy a 6-month DID number to accept the GV confirmation call, so I guess its probable that a Gizmo number cannot be used for confirmation.
It's a shame it took so long for ipkall to get back to you. It usually does take a day or two, but a week is awful. Then again waiting 6-8 months for a Google Voice invite is a tad bit more irritating (but still well worth it)

Well it was before I even got my GV invite, mainly just as experimentation for getting my SIP setup. Free is free, so I wasn't really concerned.
By the way, I have updated the Sipdroid primer a little. Might make some more tweaks/update the sample pics later.
This is a great tutorial! I'm currently using just the gizmo5 + GV setup, what are the advantages to your way? I am assuming the 3 minute outgoing call limit is gone, but is there anything else?
My #1 complaint with the gizmo5 + GV method (and this may be Sipdroid's fault) is that it seems if I don't make or recieve a call for a few hours... maybe a day... then sipdroid sort of times out, disconnects, and I miss calls even though sipdroid still shows the green connected light. I'm just curious if getting away from gizmo5 would fix this? Thanks!

Thank you, and yes you are correct about the 3 minute limit, but you don't have to leave gizmo for that. Just set GV as default dialer and set call method to Call-Back in GV (Be sure to set gizmo # as callback in GV app). Other than that Gizmo5 charged for callerID at the time I set mine up, and I had alot of choppy calls when using them (even using X-Ten and Ekiga from pc). Also Google Voice did not (and I'm not sure if they do yet) allow a Gizmo # to be default forward. Using IPkall gives you a true US # which can be set as default and used to validate g.v. account. People who don't have a US # couldn't even forward to Gizmo until a default US land or mobile number was set.
As far as missed calls and sipdroid timing out, I believe it depends on how you are connecting. I haven't had any trouble with such issues while on 3g. In fact I use this as my only method of calling, and dropped down to just the data plan with my carrier. Before we got 3g where I live I would have similar problems on EDGE and WIFI networks. Try setting the minimum signal strength lower for the networks you will be using under advanced settings on sipdroid. Also be sure to use TCP rather than UDP. Required refresh time is alot longer with TCP and you will not get as many time-outs.
Another thing is it may very well be gizmo5 causing the timeout issue. I did miss a few calls and got alot more disconnects while I was testing to see if I could cut out a few legs of my forwarding scheme. Figured it would cut back on a little latancy, but It gave me issues so I switched back. Though Sipdroid supports any sip provider that uses the proper codecs, it is really designed to work well with PBXes. I have tried it with 4-5 providers and none worked as well as PBXes. Even gizmo5 worked better through PBXes than directly connecting from sipdroid.
Followed but Red light
sorry about that
ive gotten this setup correctly (i think), but i cannot get the pbxes->sipdroid part working.
if i call my ipkall number, i see the call register in sip2sip, and i see it in the history in pbxes.
sipdroid connects to pbxes fine, and the extension shows up as active. the call just never makes it to sipdroid
if i call from sipdroid OUT, i get a message that says please try again later and hangs up

There may be a problem with inbound routing settings. One thing you could try would be to skip sip2sip by forwarding ipkall directly to your pbxes extension. There are instructions on how to do this at pbxes. It works quite well. I will add this to the guide soon. I've just been a little busy lately.

There are quite a few things that could cause this.
What type of call are you trying to make? (are you calling another sip# or a pstn#)
Which sip provider do you use for outbound calls?
Is your outbound route configured properly at pbxes?
I just let GV handle the outbound calls with callback. I have a sipdiscount account configured for outbound, but I don't really use it much. That's why I didn't cover it in the guide. I'll help as much as I can, but you might also want to check out the Sipdroid Primer. It explains alot about using sipdroid to place calls.

Sipdroid+Gizmo+GV on Android
Hello,
First, thanks for your hard work enabling GV to work on an Android phone, like my unlocked G1 Dev Phone on AT&T EDGE in NYC.
I tried a different route, using Gizmo, Sipdroid, and GV. I set up GV to "use Google Voice for all calls", "call back" method, and WIFI and EDGE for connecting.
It all works just fine, calls to Canada are crystal clear, even away from WIFI on EDGE.
However, I just got my first wireless bill for this DATA ONLY phone (formerly a Blackberry), and was shocked that a 23-minute call to Canada cost me $16.00!
What happened?
Will your method fix the "free" nature of this system, is Gizmo the culprit here?
Please define how I should set up my data-only G1 to work properly with SIP, or do I just undo all the settings for Gizmo, and use the procedures you advise in your post?
Thank you!
if you use google voice....your not talking over the net...your talking over your cell line.

Sounds like your google voice also forwarded to your cell number. Make sure it's unchecked on their website under settings > phones. That would also explain why you got perfect calls even away from wifi/edge. You can be sure sipdroid is being used by the color of the call display. If it's a more blueish green it's a sip call. Regular green is cellular network.
OK guys sorry for the complete noobness ahead of time but I have no idea how this stuff works but I'm very interested in it. First of all my scenario is I'm going to be moving to the Philippines for nursing school next year and I want to keep in touch with my family while taking my unlocked G1 with me. I have a Google Voice number and a Gizmo5 account. I saw on the Gizmo5 site that I can't make calls for free but I can receive calls and talk as long as I like for free, I think... Say I'm receiving a call from the US when I'm in the Philippines and I answer. Are they dialing my SIP number or my GV number? And if they're calling my GV number are they being charged for standard domestic calling since it's a Houston #? Basically what I'm looking for is to use my Google Voice number and Gizmo5 account to talk to my family here for free while I'm in the Philippines without them being charged for long distance calls.
Could anyone help me out with this?

I set sipdroid up using gizmo5 and here's what I did
verify your gizmo through google voice then set google voice to forward incoming calls to your gizmo number
On the gizmo website you can set your google phone number as the outgoing ptsn just use the google voice tab and enter your gv # now all outgoing calls are free to any US #
Now setup your siddroid info username/password is gizmo username or phone # and your password
set your server to proxy01.sipphone.com
leave domain empty
port =5060
protocol = udp
and your done, now your friends, family can call your local number and it will forward all your calls to your phone anywhere with a internet connection and you can also make calls to any US number for free using the same connection
Hi:
Can I get back to using ipkall and pbxes in combo? It is not clear how to set this up. What exactly should I put in the 'SIP Phone Number' and 'SIP Proxy" fields?

Your sip phone number would be your pbxes extension
Example: gurnted-200
Sip Proxy would be: pbxes.com (.org works too but not as well)

Does the time limit no longer apply for Gizmo outgoing? I stopped using them when I got 2 days of choppy calls (both on sipdroid and pc softphone) and havn't been back since. Have they changed it so out calls through Google Voice are unlimited? Also it uses udp which needs to refresh 10x as often. The developer of sipdroid says this causes excessive battery drain. How well is it working for you?

To clarify. If you use the "Google Voice" app developed by Google you are indeed using your cell line. However, if one uses the "GV" app developed by Evan Charlton you are able to set callback number to whatever you choose. By choosing IPKall # as callback and forwarding it to a sip account, calls are made over the net/data plan through Sipdroid.

well i only answered that it worked with gizmoproject which is not free.. sipdroid would not work and from reading their notes i needed a proxy acct. which just complicated. it.. at least asip did work directly with my gizmo acct.. but i bought outgoing minutes.. think it is like 1.5c /minute or something..
i only use it for outgoing usually over wifi in places that att has no or crapy service (like our cottage) where i also have wireless

I've been looking around for a good guide to show how to setup Sipdroid for video calls using Gizmo5.
I tried setting up sipdroid with gizmo5 account and as of now voice call go through fine but video calls do not.
I suspect that a pbxes passthrough account may be necessary.
Can someone please point us to a guide or instructions to setup video calls with sipdroid/gizmo5?
Thanks!

Free Unlimited calling via Gizmo/G Voice

Has anyone tried using Gizmo/SIP in conjunction with 'google voice' and 'google voice call back' app? If you have myfaves on tmobile, you can get unlimited free calling using just google voice. However, if you dont have myfaves feature (like me ), there is a complicated or not so complicated workaround which can give u free unlimited calling on 3g.
so who has tried this and how was your experience?

pbxes.org has direct peering with google voice. It's much, much easier to set up now.
I posted some instructions here
http://androidforums.com/android-applications/252222-google-voice-pbxes-org-sipdroid-free-calls.html
You just need google voice installed, then download sipdroid from the market and it pretty much sets everything up automatically from there.
Quick Summary of the directions.
Get a google voice number and install google voice app.
Install sipdroid (free in market)
Run sipdroid and click the link at the bottom that says new PBX linked to my google voice
Verify your google voice account email is correct and enter your google voice password below (yes, you are giving them your password). Enter your pbxes.org password below that (that's creating a new password, so it can be anything).
Click Configure or Save. I don't recall exactly what it says at that step.
You might need to go into google voice->voice settings->phones and make sure you have a google chat account there and that it's enabled for forwarding.
Make and Receive VoIP calls using sipdroid. When you make outbound calls, your google voice number will appear as the caller ID. With inbound calls, as long as you have google talk checked off as a forwarding number in google voice and you have sipdroid running, sipdroid will "ring" and you can answer the call over VoIP.
Call history will appear in Google Voice AND on pbxes.org (even if sipdroid isn't open).
You might also have to check off the 3g option if you want to to work on 3g as well as wifi.
get magicjack and you can run a software hack to get your sip info from your magicjack device, then you have unlimited calls over wifi and 3g for only 20 bucks a year.

Except that MagicJack is garbage.
I have used Gizmo with GV and it works pretty good. Also used Sipgate with GV and that works good as well. That is for people who doesn't have a Gizmo account. Just make sure that all your phonecalls are made with GV when dialing out.
Also you can use Gizmo or Sipgate in conjunction with Sipsorcery, and setup your homephone if you have a PAP2T-NA and you can get rid of your homephone. I think that is where the nice value is.
I beg to differ Magicjack calls were alot better than sipgate.

I think this part makes this not worth it. Apart from your email, it has your Google Checkout which would make it easy for anyone to abuse it for purchases on the web. Even accepting that pbxes.org/sipdroid would never do it, if they get hacked, you are likely to be SOL. Avoidable.
If they could change the process to use OAUTH, it would be a lot safer.

Did you try to use your username and password at the pbxes.org website? If that works then check the settings for sipdroid on your phone, the first SIP Account should be filled in with your username-200, the -200 might be different but that's what I have. You can check this number on the website and clicking on Extensions. Also, check the password. It should register.

Thanks. Everything was set up fine on my end except the user name on SIP line one...where I didn't have the '-200' after my login id. Once I fixed that, I got a green dot and made a couple of test calls and I think its working fine now.
Its horrible that we have to give our google pass to the pbxes website.... to be honest, its kinda scary..I also had to delete all my google checkout info. Hopefully, this safety issue will be addressed soon.
Just a question though: Will my call history and voice mails be saved in Google Talk inbox like it used to be before?
Figured it out: Call history does show up in google voice account.
A caveat: SIP Droid app has to be running to be able to make and receive calls on it. If you exit it, you wouldn't be able to receive or place calls using it.
I will be checking how much battery SipDroid consumes. Post your experiences!!!!

When you use Google Voice on your mobile device, all that happens is you call a Google Voice phone line with your Sprint voice number, and then your call is patched and forwarded to the number you dialed. There's nothing "WiFi" about it.
To use WiFi calling, you need a SIP account that can connect to the POTS (Plain Old Telephone System, aka, a normal phoneline).
If you have Google Voice, and acted about a week ago, you could open Sipdroid, punch in your password, and it would create an account on PBXes which would create a SIP account which connected to your Google Voice number via the same servers as the Gmail Chat widget.
However, PBXes ran out of capacity, and shut off that feature for free accounts.
Another solution is to use a service like Sipgate ONE, which gives you a SIP account that connects to a landline number, and you can then add said number to Google Voice as a phone.
No matter what you do though, just get the SIP credentials/login, and add those to the Internet Calling section under Settings>Call settings.

How??? Since when does this work??
There's a way of using google voice via wifi calling.

I don't know if you can get SIPsorcery now or not. I've been using this set up for about 2 years now (give or take). If the internet is signal is good enough, this way rocks!
I used this set up when I was overseas to make and receive calls via my google voice.

What's the best way get Google Voice to work on an unactivated phone?

I have an HTC EVO (with a bad esn) that I'm using just on wifi - I'm using Google Voice and GrooveIP to make calls but without service I can't finish the Google voice setup - It needs an active # so that it can send a text.
My question is - Is there an easy way to get around this? I've looked around for answers and I've learned a little about SIP but it seems like there's got to be an easier way. The other thing I was thinking was to just flash it to cricket, activate service for an hour, activate GV and then cancel.
Anyone been through this already and have advice?
SIPAndroid might be useful. Back when I set it up it did not ask me for a confirmation SMS. I used the default provider that comes with the application.
The reason I am trying to finish activating GV on the phone is so I can text from the same GV # that I call from. Wouldn't going through a SIP service force me to use a different #?

No since you already have a phone # (your GV #), the SIP is just the connection between the phone line and the internet.
I take it your setting up through your computer? Stop what your doing. Its a pain in the butt. (I know from experience)
Just download the Google voice app and sign in using the email account used to set up your Google voice account. Takes like 2 min and no calling necessary

Worth a try.. and i dont think it would.. GV and others like it that have calling, like skype, generally KNOW your trying to not use talk time so they know to do it via internet/3g/4g/wifi

I just confirmed it on my phone. If you shutdown the radio but leave wifi on, GV will complain about being unable to place the call because of airplane mode. I'm using the network app to disable only the CDMA radio, all others (BT, WiMAX and Wifi) are enabled.
So yes, you MUST use a SIP to be able to use GV without the CDMA radio attempting to make a regular call.
I just remembered the name of the SIP app: SIPdroid
Thanks to fenixjn and the others in this thread. I got it going on my EVO 4g.
If u haven't figured out a way to set it up. use the internet. When it ask for a phone number use a landline number. After that u can use the google voice app like u wanted to. Hope that helps. After the activation call just unforward to that number and forward calls to gtalk or g chat. I forget exactly what the option is. I use groove IP to make and receive calls. I had sip Droid set up but it stopped working for me a few months ago. The money for groove IP is worth it. The calls are great quality. It has dropped calls on my a few times. But I can't complain for the ease of use and the low price.
Now I'm even more confused. I already set up the Google voice app and grooveIp and have been making and receiving calls just fine. My issue is having a number I can use to complete the Google voice app on my phone. The app wants to send me a confirmation text and since I have no service it cant. So now my question is how do I use SIPDroid to do that??

By the way if I wasn't clear - I'm only trying to get google voice fully on the phone so i can text over wifi too. If there's an easier way I'm all ears.
I used my home phone number to set up google voice(it is a vonage number now that I ported to them from my old land line company). I first set up the google voice on my computers and it went smoothly. I then took my EVO 4g (which does not have service) and connectected by wifi to the market and downloaded voice, it kept prompting me for a cell number and I didnt enter one but it did load google voice onto my phone. I then downloaded Sipdroid and used my Google Voice number and it handled everything. I can send and receieve text and can send and recieve calls. A friend did try to send me two picture files via the text messaging that would not come thru. I don't know if there are limitations on what you can send but the normal text messages come thru fine. The phone service works ok but the quality leaves something to be desired. I havent started trying to tweek that yet.
Thanks, I'll try it right now...

It can be done. I did it to mine. i cant remeber how cause its been a long time. Bit i thought all i did was add another number to gvoice on the computer. Then when it asked for comfermation it made a phone call to the number i had set up to forward it to. U may have to set up another gmail account just so u can get another gvoice number. Then use a number u can receive calls to ass the primary number. I'm gonna see if I can find the link I found the info for and post it for u. Don't be discouraged. It took me a while to figure out how to do it.
Thanks for all your help so far, I haven't got it working yet but I'm closer than I was

Alright I finally got it. It was actually pretty simple, I downloaded the text plus app to get a free number and used that to complete Google voice and voila.

Hi- could you explain in a bit more detail how you got GV to use your Text+ to complete the GV registration? I am trying to do the same exact thing you did, but cannot get GV to "see" my Text+ number. Thanks for any help you can offer...
[added note] just realized my sig line is waaay out of date...sorry!
It's been awhile and I promptly forgot everything but here's what I remember - Text plus lets you send and receive texts for free and lets you receive voice calls for free. As far as I recall GV needs to send you a text? or possibly a voice message. I think I just entered my Text + number as the cell # in GV and it all worked out
