Devs Need volunteers that are using 1.5

This is a call to arms for anyone still running 1.5 on their eris. We (developers) need people to capture the update process using wireshark (or an equivalent). This is needed for a new root attempt, but sadly all of the devs have already updated to 2.1 so we can't do this.
First go here and download the RUU:

Next you need to go to verizon's website and login to your account. Click "Suspend/Resume Service" and suspend your phone. You can resume service on the phone after you are done here with no penalties or charges.
Please follow these directions, taken from the first root thread

4) You can cancel the RUU install session on the PC, and unplug the USB cable if you want (so long as you have a well-charged battery!)
3) Power down the phone, and boot it back up holding the Call and End buttons simultaneously
4) Scroll down (or whatever it asks) to go from Fastboot mode to HBOOT mode
5) The phone will automatically discover the PB00IMG.ZIP file, and unpack it and verify it.
6) It will ask you if you want to install; when you (select and) enter Yes, the phone will reboot, and come up again - appearing as if it is repeating the same thing. This time, however, it won't stop and ask you - it will just begin the install.
7) Wait... Wait... Wait... Wait... and then wait some more. If I recall correctly, it seems to hang a little bit at the HTC splash screen after the reboot. That is normal - just WAIT and let the phone do it's thing.
That's it, except for:
8) You probably will want to dial *228 and choose option 1 to complete the programming of your phone - it will reboot after it completes.

After you are done, DO NOT start the OTA update that it prompts you to do.
Now we are going to install wireshark and setup the capture environment:
Download wireshark from http://www.wireshark.org/download.html for your versions of windows
Install it - make sure you also install WinPcap
At this point you should turn off any wireless encryption on your router. I know it's not necessary but it makes it easier to go through the captures.
Setup the wireless on your phone to connect to your wireless router and turn off your mobile data connection.
After you have turned off the wireless security on your router, we are going to start the wireshark capture.
Run wireshark - if you are on vista or windows 7 make sure to run it as an administrator
Click "Capture" then "Interfaces"
Click "options" next to the interface that your computer has an IP for
Make sure to check "Capture packets in promiscuous mode"
In the Capture Filter box, type "host <ip_address>" where <ip_address> is the ip address your router gave your phone
Make sure that "Automatic scrolling in live capture" is checked so you can ensure the capture is working
Click "Start"
At this point, you should browse the web with your phone. You should see lots of stuff scrolling by in the wireshark window.
If there isn't, you messed up something above and should try again.
If there is a lot of stuff scrolling by, continue:
Close the browser
In wireshark, click "Capture" then "Restart"
Reboot your phone
On your phone, go to "Settings" -> "About Phone" -> "Check for Updates" and go through with the OTA update
After the update is done and your phone is rebooted, go to wireshark and click "Capture" -> "Stop"
Then click "File" -> "Save As" and give it a name.
Upload that file to Megaupload, or Mediafire, or some other file sharing site, or any private server that I can get access to.
After you have uploaded the file please message me through the forums with a link to the file.

Isn't there a "logcat" line you can run through adb to get the same thing? Like, when the update is available, you can plug your phone into your computer, connect it to terminal using adb and run a logcat to find the address of the update.zip

You CANNOT downgrade from 2.1 to 1.5.

We don't need the location of the update file, we need all the extra network traffic that surrounds the OTA process.

We need to know, exactly, how the update process works.
I'm currently working on downgrading 2.1. Will post back a tut if i get it working

Scratch that. I don't think AVDs will get OTAs.

Sadly I tried this a while ago when messing around with AVD Skins but wasn't able to figure it out. If anyone can figure it out please let me know how you do it! -_-"

No need to go to all that trouble. I've already posted a link to the OTA update (1.16.605.1 -> 1.17.605.1) in this XDA thread a couple of days ago. Just copy n' paste into your browser's URL bar. I'll repeat it here for grins.

The OTA process drops the downloaded zip file into /cache, and somehow during reboot, it's presence is detected. If it "only" needs to be dropped in there, or there are some other hooks that need to be present at the reboot, I am not sure. I say "only" because that implies that root privilege is needed to do that - or perhaps it is possible to use "fastboot update" after rebooting the phone with $ adb '(sync; reboot -n oem-78)' The OTA zip file is not signed the way the RUU "rom.zip" files are; it uses the same signing methods as app (.apk) files - the SDK "jarsigner" method.
You can unpack the zip file and look at what it does - there is a script at
META-INF/com/google/android/update-script
which controls the update... and there is a binary patch executable included in zip which is called upon to do file-by-file binary patching.

Thanks for the info bftb0, but we aren't looking to snag the OTA file. We are actually trying to see what communication goes on between our phones and the verizon update servers.

FYI,
When you roll back to MR1, the phone seems to have already grabbed and downloaded the OTA update... in less time than it takes to hand-configure the phone. If you want to observe the OTA process via wireless, you need to prevent the phone from having Mobile network access, since that comes up by default after a FR or MRx rom burn.
Here's a long shot. Perform the MR1 rollback inside a cell dead zone, and conduct a MIM attack by setting up a server on the wireless net so the phone downloads a different OTA zip. You control DHCP for WiFi, so you also in principle control the DNS and routing the phone sees via WiFi. In principle, it's not possible because https should prevent Man-In-the-Middle... but if that (Google) server isn't correctly configured, maybe the phone is not really being too careful about certificate problems. (Either that or the Google server is tuning its' responses based on UA strings).

Sorry, my bad. I didn't read carefully enough.
I could probably attempt what you are asking for - I am quite familiar with wireshark (and even hardware sniffing of WiFi, so long as you have the right nic), but the fact that the phone seems to go and look for updates immediately after a FR or MRx update means that the "check for updates" thing may not do anything useful for you if there is already an update on the phone waiting to be installed by the time you start pressing menu buttons. (Thus the idea about "do MR1 in a cell dead zone")
Beyond that, there is a possibility that the update app does not do a wildcard host bind() when it sets up the socket when it inquires about updates with the Verizon servers - for instance, MMS service works exactly that way (it will only use the mobile network interface), and precisely so because of security considerations. Do you know whether or not any of the update conversation actually traverses WiFi if the mobile network is turned off?

You can force updates to occur over WiFi if the mobile network is turned off. Do you think this would work:
1. on 1.17 do a factory reset but do not activate the phone.
2. Initiate the downgrade process
2a. while downgrading, turn on packet capture
3. When the phone boots back up and wants you to call a number to activate, hang up
I think if you can skip the activation the phone will not have a mobile data connection, which would allow you to turn on wifi and initiate the update process.

gps conf ... HELP !!!

Hello. I am too having problems with the GPS fix. I googled, i have read fora, i wrote on fora, i have read even the facebook desire hd page where people from all over the world have the same problem with the GPS.
I have tried EVERYTHING, now the last chance is to change the region from the gps conf file....which i can remember being northamerica, while i live in europe. Maybe changing that to EUROPE will help me fix the gps problem.
To save changes to that file, i would need root access. I don't have root access. I don't need root access, i just want to change that file and see if the gps gets the fix faster than before....other than that, i have never wanted root access.
So, knowing my target....which is the most simple way to change that .conf file? I know that the visionary tool doesn't work anymore with froyo desire hd....so i can't root the phone...other methods look really complicated to me. there should be a way to edit the GPS file without doing a mess with roms and downgrades and everything...
please help !!!

You need root access to edit the file, there's no other solution that I know of. If you decide to root, use FasterFix from market to change the region.

You do not have any other option other than to root your device in order you to alter system files. Even if you download FasterFix in the market, you will need to have Superuser permission before the app can directly change system files for you.
If your build number is higher than 1.3xxxxxx, then you have to do a downgrade.
GPS performance has been affecting me in the past, but now i have found a solution(not sure yet, but it works for me until now). Now I got a fix within 5-15 seconds. At most is 30 seconds for the first fix.
Anyway, you should consider rooting. You can have full access throughout your device. My phone previous, battery life can last for a day, now at least two days. I am running different ROM and Kernel thats why.

ok could you link me to a really SIMPLE tutorial to do that? of course i think i'll have to do a hard reset? lose all my saved games and screen configurations.... sigh i just did a hard reset for the same reason (gps)....

Fasterfix will return an error both times, but if you open gps.conf from a file manager like ASTRO) you'll see that file had been changed.
After a while, Android reverts automatically gps.conf to notrh america ntp.
Didn't pay much attention to this, so i don't really know if Android reverts file on reboot or even without reboot.

i actually used faster fix, but as soon as i do anything, it says 'required root access' and doesn't do anything !! is that the error you're talking about ?
EDIT: i tried again...start faster fix: can't get root. change to europe = root access required. the gps.conf (i checked) is still on north-america.pool server ((

What are you talking about? You can't change system files without root and the app description clearly states that you need root access and busybox. It's not there to fool people is it?

i'm trying to root the phone...already on the first step i'm blocked: android developer kit doesn't find java SDK 64 bit....i googled and other people have this problem, i can't fix it, it just keeps saying that java was not found....OMG i had never thought rooting a phone would have been that difficult....i think i'll surrender and never use the gps in my life.
the installer of android SDK stops because it doesn't find java SDK. if i unzip the SDK, at the exit it says the same thing. I was able to make windows recognize the phone in debug mode as ADB interface....but then the
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuteradb shell
says 'not found'. anyway the java has something wrong with the android SDK that, as i said, keeps telling me that cannot find the java. i already entered the path in user variables...

while downloading the SDK, Don't download the exe, go with zip...I think that's what I did when I faced the issue last time.....

4.06.605.3 update is hitting phones as we type!

Okay. So I don't have the link to the PDF but you can get it from Verizon's website. Apparently this does not contain info stating that this update is Gingerbread, unlike 4.06.605.2. Weird. Devs and Mods: delete or move post if not in proper part of forum; no hard feelings.

Actually here in my area they recently put free wifi access all along I-94. Works pretty good but signal gets kinda low in some spots, probably between antennas.

I posted in the thread in the General forum but I'll repost here, in case devs don't go there. I have the update and I haven't installed it yet. The phone says that it has been downloaded and verified. If I can get something off the phone in this state that can help the devs let me know. I'm thinking the phone downloaded a file that I could copy and post or something. I just don't know where to look for it. It says the update is 87.8M

Try doing this from a terminal emulator window or adb:

The OTA .zip files which are downloaded from a Google server are not signed the same way as the RUU "rom.zip" files - they use the app .apk manifest signing method. (manifests and certs a la "jarsigner").
If you are interested in looking at the process that HTC/Verizon uses for the OTA updates, you can get the URL for the OTA zip the following way:
Run logcat on the pc and accept the update on the phone
$ adb logcat > logcat_accept.txt
This will sit like this (it continues to log output into the output file) until the phone reboots. At that point, the adb logcat job will terminate, and the name of the zip file will be indicated in the logfile in a message similar to:
W/SystemUpdateHelper( 64): !!! REBOOTING TO INSTALL /cache/desirec-ota-104882.7b1e5cca.zip !!!
Then, take the name of the file and paste it on the end of android.clients.google.com/updates/partner

Been trying to get ADB working but the package won't install. I have to head out or my wife will murder me. I won't update my phone until I try this out though. It might be tomorrow until I can get it done. Hopefully someone else will help out with the file. If they don't I will. Sorry for the delay but I gotta go.

Actually it's more annoying then amazing lol...I'm trying to work on my apps and the notification won't stop popping up and the file is in the way

Pardon my ignorance, but what *is* this 6.3MB file? Obviously it's an OTA zip file, but it's quite small.. this lone file updates the stock 2.2 ROM to 2.3.4?

I was out of the country and used my phone on wifi. Of course as soon as I am gone, I get the notification for the 2.3 update. I downloaded it (160 megs or so) over wifi, but didn't install it since I wasn't sure if it would turn off my airplane mode and I would get slammed by tons of txt which add up $$ quick. It was always in my notification bar for the update and when I cleared all notifications it was still there under "ongoing". I landed back in the US and turned on the cell. A few minutes later I looked in the notifications and the update was gone. Anyone know where the file was saved on my phone so I can go ahead and run the update? Thanks in advance. I checked the "about" screen and I am still running 2.2 (was hoping it automatically updated without me knowing it).

here, download THIS FILE, and rename it to "PD15IMG.zip"
place it in the root of your sdcard, reboot into hboot/bootloader by holding power +volume down buttons, then follow the onscreen instructions.

That file saranhai gave you is exactly what you need. Do as he says, and you'll get what you are wanting. Its the least dangerous flash you can make to your phone. If you walked into T-mobile and asked for the update they would pop in an sd card with that file and follow the same procedure.
BTW, its important that the name be all caps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe doing this manual install will wipe your device's memory. Just a heads up as a reminder to backup your data beforehand.

6055U Root method found

Hello all, I found a method to Root and get a custom recovery on our cricket variant, no donations required! You need to find a copy of sugar qct with a username and password, I don't remember exactly where I found it but it shouldn't be too difficult to find. Then you need to let it update to the latest build, which includes the programmer for our phone. If you don't see 6055u in the list it's not up to date. From there, Hook up your phone (may need to manually put it in download mode. Press upgrade and then navigate to the install directory, look in /bin and find where it downloads all the mbm files. Replace the one that starts with an r with the TWRP recovery for 6055. You may have to overwrite it multiple times during the process. If you did it correctly you will be able to boot into TWRP, if not try again. If you don't close sugar I believe it won't overwrite the firmware files, but I haven't messed with it much. I will try to write a tool to make it easier when I have the time but I'm pretty busy. Feel free to pm me with any questions and I will help the best I can.

Replace the one that starts with an r with the TWRP recovery for 6055. You may have to overwrite it multiple times during the process. If you did it correctly you will be able to boot into TWRP, if not try again. If you don't close sugar I believe it won't overwrite the firmware files, but I haven't messed with it much. I will try to write a tool to make it easier when I have the time but I'm pretty busy. Feel free to pm me with any questions and I will help the best I can.

Did a Google search for "sugar qct" and I see a couple of million hits for "The Sugar Act"... :laugh:
Tried Root Genius, and it, of course doesn't work...
If you happen to find a link for the app or method you stated, I would be eternally grateful... My lovely wife and I upgraded our phones to the Cricket 6055U, and, since, while not an Android developer, per se, can find my way around the device without being scared off...
So, with due respect, I'd ask if you have the app or name correct?

This should help with setting up sugar. The only difference here is to update it and you also need a username and password that I don't have on me at the moment. It will be a few hours until I get home but I will update asap.
Edit: nevermind lol, good luck friend. You may need a decent battery percentage as well

OK... apparently I'm an idiot... Running Windows 10 Pro, and the installer says it's going to install to an appropriate folder on C:\... yet, trying to find it, it really is weird.... I'm going to try on a VMWare Win 7 virtual PC, and see if I'm able to find it there, and move it to my actual C: drive...
If it works, I'll be grateful for your contribution and praise you to the highest heaven! :laugh:

Can't seem to get the beast to work...
If you would be so kind, would there be any way you'd be able to write up a concise step-by-step thing, if you've made it work... I've got the .chm file open on my desktop, and have spent a few hours trying to make it work to no avail.
Again, if it worked for you, your process would be welcome.

My point is that the site recommended seems to insist on Lollipop on the small beast... and there doesn't seem to be a recommendation for the .bin files, and, when installing on Win 10, it seems to install the Sugar app into some directory on my C: drive that is really not that accessible... Did it using a VMWare Win 7 32-bit virtual, and was able to access the directory, copy and paste to my regular C: drive (old Windows geek since Win 3.11... and DOS 3), and it seemed to run... (of course, running as Administrator), but it really doesn't seem to work for me... Again, I freely admit that I'm likely not doing something right, but even after some research and the included .chm file, I seem to be missing something.
Again, and begging your indulgence for seeming like a noob or a rube, but if I'm not making it happen, I rather think that the tips would be lost on someone for whom this is their first Android device...
Kinda frustrating, as, even though I've been a tech-support guy and database developer for more than 30 years, this thing has me stymied...
I found it fascinating for the *#*# command, earlier, from another noble soul, and, obviously, I also found that the device as configured says, basically... "Don't give a damn... you can turn this sucker on, but as soon as you exit this menu, I'm gonna turn it off again."
Just a little frustrating, and it seems that most of the tips and tricks elsewhere seem to be thinking that new owners of the 6055U are running Lollipop.... aaarrrgggghhh....
If it needs Lollipop to work, and if there's a relatively painless way to downgrade, and then upgrade from a ROM, I'm good with that... the Idol 3 seemed to require that, and it worked well for me, with just an evening's work. This one? Cricket seems to have had a warped sense of humor about it... I seriously dig the device, and, since my Idol 3 broke, and my lovely wife's LG G-Stylo (which was a pain in the ass, and next-to-impossible to root, and then be just perpetually stuck at the logo screen with an unfixable boot loop, if one screwed it up, and just required sending the beast back to LG, as long as one took out Cricket's warranty plan... <sigh>), we took the plunge on this one...
Not much for which I require root, but, since I spent good money on some legit apps (and lucked into a few ... ahem... not legit apps that worked for me), these things require root... I know there's a way to do it, and the Sugar app seems promising, but, mildly autistic guy that I am (and 60 years old, with a memory that doesn't work as it used to), a slimmed-down step-by-step doc would be helpful... should some noble soul put such together...
Apparently, the root method has worked for at least one member here.... But this weird old Jewish hippie doesn't see the mental diagram....

Hey everyone, sorry about the confusion. I installed on Windows 10 pro with no issues. As far as the page I linked you can disregard everything but the app itself. The update that downloads is marshmallow, and I've had no issues overwriting the latest version. I may have gotten sugar from a different location though, as soon as I get a chance I will do a better write up with everything. A helpful way to find the install directory would be right click on the shortcut from the start menu and click find Target / open file location. If it brings you to the folder with the shortcuts do it again and you will have the install directory. The app should be in (install dir)/tool and the downloaded updates go in (install dir)/bin under a folder that only shows up once you start the process within sugar. I will try to compile the information into a more user friendly format tonight but I can't make any promises on that.

Also just to clarify, I didn't use any chm file

I'm wondering if you could upload your version you have on your pc. I just spent the last month in jail here in Orlando fighting a case and the only proof I've got is on my phone on a phone that I deleted my videos on. I really need the videos back too get a not guilty if I gotta pay for it it's cool but I'm out on bond and all the recover videos apps require root

I got this to work last night. Typed up some instructions but didn't get them posted. They're on my PC at home and I'm at work.

Those are the basic instructions too except we don't need to swap out bout and use the TWRP from deckersu thread.
Once flashed it'll automatically reboot. I found you had to make sure you caught this and booted into TWRP right away don't let the phone boot. Then transfer SuperSU in TWRP and flash.

FYI this root method wipes your phone so I don't know if this will help your situation or not.

In sugar there is an option to not wipe, it's under session settings or something to that effect

Wish I had noticed that!! Oh well, stoked to have root and it's good to start fresh. Got Xposed installed today and finally got that annoying charging light turned off. Working on getting wifi tetherng working. Then if I can figure out how to get the dialer to be friends with Google voice this phone will have all its annoyance fixed

Thank you for finding this thread, it is the same one I found but I couldn't remember where it was the other day when I started this thread. Hopefully this will help the people who have been having issues, although I will admit a more painless method would be preferable. I'm currently working on modifying a dirtycow exploit to simply flash the recovery and reboot into twrp, if I get it to work I will zip it all up and post it here.

I got wifi tethering working I did a lot of things but I believe that did it was adding net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to my build.prop then I went into system/app and changed serviceentitlement.apk into serviceentitlement.oat using es file Explorer

Thanks for figuring this out!!! I'd been messing with it for a few days. The renaming the apk to .oat was the piece I was missing. That and a reboot got it working!!
