Hey!
First I have to say Thank You for all the contributions you have made to the forums. My girlfriend and I both just bought Vibrants 2 weeks ago, and being the techy I am, have been reading all sorts of stuff in the forums. I actually have been visiting the XDA forums since last year when I got my MyTouch 3G. I haven't posted anything, because usually by the time I have a question, I come to the forums and find an answers then in the moments of happiness, fail to say thank you to the community.
So it's time to start contributing.
I've been reading about the numerous processes on how to get into the Recovery mode for the Vibrant, and the possibility of the Hardware Locked phones.
After exhausting all options, I decided to call Tmo and see if they could help. Well long story short I went back to the store, and they gave me a new procedure (at least one that I have not seen on the forums so far) to test out. And it works!!
I've been doing it over and over for the last hour and each time I've been able to get into recovery mode.
Here it is...
Start with the phone ON and NOT plugged into the computer OR wall for charging.
1. Power down the phone as usual. Wait until the "Goodbye" disappears and then wait a few more seconds. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING DURING THIS TIME.
2. Press and hold Vol+,Vol-, & Power.
3. Wait for the Vibrant logo to appear.
4. Wait for the Vibrant logo to disappear.
5. Wait for the Vibrant logo to appear again.
6. Release ONLY Vol+, & Power, and continue to hold Vol -.
RECOVERY MODE!!!
Most of the process I have seen tell you to hold down and keep holding both Vol+ and Vol-, but I could never get it to work.
Please let me know if this works for you.
And I also want to say that I"m sorry if I have posted this in the wrong spot, or this procedure is some where that I haven't read yet. But I finally found something that worked and wanted to share.
Good Luck!
Reg.
Didn't work for me. Lemme try again.
EDIT: Works! Awesome. I never heard of this way to enter recovery, but it's good. +1.
But I don't have a hardware locked Vibrant so maybe it's different for me.
I get in every time with every VIbrant i have used.
Power off phone
Power on holding power, vol up and vol down
When the Samsung logo appears let go of power and continue to hold vol up and vol down.
Works everytime for me..... *Shrugs*

Granted. But this procedure does not work for all vibrants.
I think OP is saying this method would work with hardware locked phones, where the normal recovery mode method doesn't work.
I'm trying this on my hardware locked phone right now. Third time's a charm?
*Edit* Nothing, 10 times unlucky.
Tested on Hardware Locked Vibrant, doesn't work.
The Vibrant screen disappearing and coming back is nothing but the phone powering on and off, because you are holding down the power key.
I had already tried this in the T-Mo store (the CSR walked usthrough it on the phone - we tried it about 50 times, mind you), and I just tried it again about 30 seconds ago.
I wish these threads would stop.
If you get locked out of your phone, brick it, whatever, and it's hardware locked.
Just get a damn replacement.
You're not going to get into recovery or download mode on it.
Seriously.
You won't.
I've been waiting for a replacement for like 5 days now, and I've been basically living on this forum. I've tried everything there is to try. Making new threads is not going to do anything but frustrate more people, because none of these magic methods will allow them to get into recovery/download via the hardware keys on a boot-up.
Edit: Exception is if you root and can disable the lockout via adb, of course. Most consumers who find this site via Google will already have this issue, and will likely not be rooted with USB debugging enabled. The phone makes it way too easy to disabled USB debugging that even if it came enabled by default, most people who charge with a laptop will see the notification and click it ignorantly (ignorant of the benefits it can provide in the event of a catastrophe like mine).

I actually saw someone in a reply mention something like this, but nothing ever came of it. They were looking for boot.bin and another file, which I can't remember at the moment.
Do you have any other info regarding a method to do this?

I think this is the latest fad for trolls. Post some crazy key combination that is supposed to work for hardware locked phones, claim it "WORKS 100%"! Bottom line, don't get your hopes up, it didn't work for me either.

it will only help you look like a troll, because the hardware locked phones domt evem attempt to read those key states on boot. The only way to fix it is with a firmware update.
there is no magic method to gettimg these phones in dlm/recovery.
so stop making threads about it.
to the person above: if u have usb debugging on u can use adb to disengage the lock, but in that case why even have a lock. the main issue is the android bug not allowimg legit owners to unlock their owm phones using their own google cred en tials.
if tjat didn't exist we wouldnt have to worry about these patt er n lockout threads.
a legit owner who gets the phone replaced would never sell the locked phone, unless they wanma pay t-mo or asurion an extra $300+ USD

I'm new you the Vibrant and not very techy at all, so what is the purpose of the recovery mode, other than the obvious term?

Well why did you click on the post, read it, then try the stated method? Did you have any hope? Or, were you looking forward to being frustrated? Really man? Really?
Bottom line: I don't think the OP promised any "magic" fix or claimed it would certainly help all Vibrant users. I took it as he/she was hopeful to be able to contribute something to the community believing it might help. I wish the posts where people are complaining about other people's posts (hardware locks, Froyo, etc.) would stop. Stop clicking.
Did work for me
Did work for me Oddity in the system I guess
Thanks for the find
Hi guys, and congratulations for the work you have put up in here. I have just bought my Vibrant and I am quite lost.... I did some reading but I would like you to specify some things if you can. The phone has the stock version T959UVJFD. I am intending to update to J16 via Kies Mini. Is there something that I would have to know, before doing that?
Also, I live in Greece, and I searched for a way to have greek Os on phone, but can't find any. Isn't there a way to have greek menus? There should be, because the Galaxy S that is sold here has greek menu...
I also read that Swype 1.60 supports greek, but I only have 1.57. What's the official way to update swype?
Finally, a little help about Roms, what do custom roms offer more than stock ones? Even more, does anybody greek in here recommend a specific mode that maybe offers better support for the greek language?
Thanks for taking the time to read this. All answers accepted!
You might want to get the unlock codes with the sgs unlock app on the market before you update to ji6.
I already have the unlock code! The problem is now I am trying to root my VIbrant, but I can't seem to enter recovery mode. I've tried all combinations. After I start it with both volume buttons pressed, the vibrant logo vanishes and when it appears again I release the power button, but it continues to boot normally. I also tried keeping all three buttons pressed all the time, but then it just reboots all the time (vibrant logo apperas and dissappear continuously). What's wrong?

Hold the volume up and down at the same time then press power button and hold it as soon as you see the vibrant screen let go of power and keep holding the volume up and down keys, this works every time for me.
I have tried that but with no result. Actually as I searched through the forums I found numerous people saying that this doesn't work for them, and they say something about hardware locked Vibrants or faulty ones. I just hoped I wasn't one of them, but that's my luck!
I know I have Few or no posts at all... but I am quite experienced with Android OS... I wish i could have contributed more to this forum before asking for help on such an INTRICATE problem.. Anyways
The rundown is this, in the sequence in which the things occured... Today i set my phone down, (Droid X, Rooted, Running Apex 1.4.1) and it was working perfectly fine. I then pick it up, absolutely nothing had been done to it between me setting it down and picking it up, and the hard buttons (Menu, Home, Back, Search, Volume Rockers, Camera Button) all not working, only the lock button on top. So, I think like I always do, Battery pull time. I preform a pull, and turn the phone back on, then it's stuck on "M", just stays there. I pull again, stuck again, nothing, one more time and it goes to stock recovery mode just the Android and Exclamation triangle, (I have clockworkmod installed) but of course, no hardbuttons are working so it's false hope. I press buttons over and over out of frustration and I bring up the menu, but that's all i can do, and i have to hold the Volume rocker down, and search to even do that, but besides that i can do nothing more. So I'm stuck at what I see as a dead end, can't move through recovery because buttons aren't working for whatever reason, so i can't flash SBF, or stock reset... So I'm asking for help, please.

have you tried getting it into bootloader mode?
hold vol - + camera + search while powering the device on
if you can get into bootloader mode than you can flash an sbf file
If you tried everything you can think of and still can't get it to do anything take it back to verizon. If you can't get it to work I doubt most of the employees at verizon would be able to get it to work either
Did you try a long battery pull. 30 seconds or more?

Pull the battery and then.plug the phone into.the wall charger. Then put the battery back in, and when the phone boots up it should boot to clockwork

Hello,
Straight to the point, Rooted UK Atrix, running 2.3.4. no other MOD OR rom or anything, i like motoblur.
Stupidly Used Bloatfreezer to freeze 'home' without having another launcher to return to. Can't use the phone now. Trying to reset (hard or soft i do not know the difference) and the phone reads ''fastboot'' then i toggle down using volume - to android recovery and the phone is coming up with starting rsd protocol x2 and nothing else (using the power + & - methods).
If i leave my phone to just boot it resides on a white screen teasing me with noises of logging in but i cannot see anything.
I'm really lost to be honest, i have no idea what to do and i am not good with terminology either (adw, flashboots, cm7 i have no idea what they are).
I know there are sooo many threads with different answer's so that is why i am starting a new thread.
To factory reset using recovery...
1.Power off the phone, press and hold volume down button, press power button.
2.Screen will come up with "Fastboot", press Vol down key to cycle through choices until you get "Android Recovery", press Vol up key
3.Wait for the "triangle ! / Android" screen then release the volume down button
*4.Tap on bottom right corner of the screen (may take a few times). a menu will come up
5.Tap on "wipe data/factory reset", and press OK. Another Confirmation screen will come. Press Yes and OK
6.After userdata is cleared, the "reboot system now" option will be highlighted by Default. Press OK.
7.Phone will reboot to initial setup MOTOBLUR screen.
NOTE/If on Android 2.3.4 then replace step #4 with pressing both Volume buttons at the same time. Also, use the Power button to activate the highlighted option instead of looking for the OK.

Can you get to android market via your computer? If so go to it, log in, find a launcher and install to your phone. Once rebooted to the phone, it *should* give you a choice or just automatically choose the new launcher. What does double tapping your home button bring you too? I was able to find my alternative launcher by moving around via that.
sounds like ya have frozen system files
prolly be easyest to unlock bootloader and push a custom rom to it (they work better than stock anyway
Yes i did freeze the home app.
I really mean thanks to those replied. Unfortunately i have tried the first suggestion but it doesn't let me get to step 3 with the triangle, fast boot - android recovery - can't fast boot 2 etc can't get passed that.
i have just plugged it in the Laptop, taking sim out, and it has started! i thought it was broken!! but unfortunately not 'home' yet...
SO it is at the motoblur login screen, should i log in? press factory reset? Any suggestions?
I'm not sure how to push an app straight to phone so i can install a launcher...
we're nearly there guys!
In addition to what Robkort said a few posts up ^^^ to get into the recovery on 2.3.4 you may have to scroll down once you see fastboot, until you see "Android Recovery" and press vol up - when the android dude comes up, if tapping the bottom right corner doesnt get you into recovery, press BOTH volume buttons at the same time.
It is now up and working with me just simply plugging it in, running moto sync, logging in to market from laptop and sending the launcher app..
Wifi was enabled luckily before i froze home, so when i pressed log in it went 'error' then launcher pro just popped up so now i think i just unfreeze home, turn it off, put my sim in and fingers crossed..
wish me luck!
Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
It's worrying how much happier i am now that i am back on top with my phone working. Pretty dependant we become!
All my widgets, and motoblur have gone, and some writing is in a different language :/ universal inbox is not there either.
Still Thanks for all the suggestions!
I suggest this thread should be 'FROZEN' or just stay open if anyone ever freezes 'home' without having another launcher installed.
I'm glad i didn't need to flash anything, put other ROMS on, hard reset losing everything, solved pretty simple luckily.
My power button has been malfunctioning for about 2 months now. That isn't to say it is 100% dead, but at times it'll work if I smack the button about a few times, and sometimes it will be completely unresponsive. I have read up on the subject and found a thread with a response from a guy claiming to be an engineer who said the micro switches they use in these phones are somewhat weak and only work for a limited number of presses. Recently, I changed roms, and to my surprise the power button worked great for a short period of time. Since then, I've found that when my power button starts acting up, wiping the dalvik cache put it back to normal. This lead me to thinking, and I've come to believe it could very well be a hardware problem that is meant to happen. I am by no means a coder/programmer but I have studied it enough to know that certain code can be written for a device that sets a "timer" for a piece of hardware to die out or malfunction. If that's the case with this, then it makes sense somewhat that wiping the dalvik cache resets this timer for a short time. Anyone have any thoughts? Am I crazy tinfoil hat wearer or does this make some sense?

I AGREE! I thought it broke a while ago but I did a complete wipe and put a brand new rom on it. Heck I almost sent it to Sammy but for some reason it stared working. I dont think its the dalvik cache though. I have a feeling its ClockworkMod Recovery because sometimes it says a key was disabled and I had problems after that. I couldnt lock my phone.

well, you solved your own theory in your statement. since when does smacking your phone equate to a software issue? my power button went in august, mostly. it started showing the behavior that you described about 4-6 weeks beforehand. i say mostly, because the physical button doesnt work anymore(rarely a response from it). but ive figured out how to work it to my advantage/needs. i can wake my phone by shaking it now, and put the screen to sleep. also can be done with a light smack in the right place on the back of the phone. but to be practicle, i remapped my search button to use as a power button and wake my phone with the volume button. really, the only hard part is navigating in the bootloader menu since the volume buttons wont work there with the power button broken. so ive learned to work it by lightly, very lightly, tapping on a certain place on the back of the phone near the power button. this "loosens" the volume buttons and lets me navigate the menu. then i tap the phone again to make a selection. this in no way indicates a software issue/conspiracy to me. when it just started displaying this behavior, i thought it might be a software issue too. but it turned out to be all physical damage.
You know, the funny thing about when it stops working is that it's never all at once.
It's a degrading process of malfunction until it takes repeated button pressing, not so much force, to work. After that it works so seldom that I'm forced to do something about it. It's for those reasons I think it's something more than a hardware problem.
From your experiences, even after a full wipe/new rom installation, your power button still doesn't work, if only for a brief time?
P.S. The new touch based recovery from team win works really well for those of us who can't use our power buttons

Hmm my guess is that there are multiple issues that result in a malfunctioning power button. Props to remapping your search button to lock your phone. It would be a great work around if my phone ever had this problem again. Have search to lock the phone and volume keys to wake it. I'm unsure how you remapped your search button though. Maybe you can tell me how?

ive been using twrp recovery for a while. even the non touch version has a no power button option. but i dont believe that theres anything else but hardware issues here. it is a degradation. at first it comes and goes, later it mostly just comes( ) and doesnt go. i can even hear a slight rattle in the power button area now if i shake the phone.
about after flashing.. at first, 50% of the time it would work after flashing, but it was just coincidence. but now no. btw, i flash many times a day, even then when it first started acting funny. flashing, wiping, it just doesnt make a difference, its coincidence.

you want v0241. i have all the power button functionality with my search key except waking the device(volume rocker wakes my device). short press screen off, long press power menu, long press plus volume down for screenshots.
@tw1tchy, I totally agree it is multiple factors, which is why I can only speak for myself based on my experiences, although your overall experience seems to be similar to mine.
@simms22, I have never noticed a rattle in my phone, its likely that you and I have different causes attributed to the power button failure.
Not trying to beat a dead horse but just for the sake of being thorough, have you tried ODIN? I noticed a substantial difference when I ODIN'ed back to stock.

I really like my Nexus S, but I kinda hope this power button self destruct kicks in soon. I see it as a feature - to make buying a Galaxy Nexus easier to justify. Good looking out Sammy.
I've had a similar problem for the last 4 months or so. It started when I dropped my nexus without the cover onto concrete floor. Not good I know.
But anyway...ever since then the power button been funny. Sometimes it didn't work at all and I couldn't turn the screen off and on. It was really bad. It took a while but now I kind of know how to handle it. Still annoying mind u.
Basically with mine the trick is to press the button really really hard towards the top end and it works fine. I've also noticed what some others are saying about changing rooms and doing resets etc. It seems to help as well.
But yeah...I still love my nexus. Lol. I think by me dropping it is the reason for my problems. It probably landed badly and loosened some part of the connection in that section or something. But as I said...all Is good now that I know the trick to it.

I've had my NS since Christmas Eve 2009 and the power button completely stopped working 2 days ago. I did notice over the past few weeks that it wasn't responding properly. TBH, my NS has been through a LOT in the past 14-months (multiple impacts, spillages, kids etc), I'm surprised it's lasted this long
I'm now using the ButtonRemapper app to use 'search' as the power button. Works great! Plus my volume keys wake the phone up so all is ok.
I love my NS and wish I bought another one when CPW had them for £150 sim free!
It might be time for me to let go of the NS , just have to decide which phone is next (but thats for another thread lol)
ugh mine is under a year old. im very angry that this happened so quickly. im gonna try giving samsung a call. hopefully the will replace it. i shouldn't have to hack my phone in order to make it usable.
@rener78 You seem to have a vast misunderstanding of how sarcasm works. Just as future reference, posting dry, tasteless irony up on the internet as a smart-mouthed statement of ill will is about as practical as a chocolate teapot.
@staplebox Lol! Well played, sir or madam. I can't say posting a thread containing the words conspiracy theory doesn't grant me at least a well placed snarky comment. Although to be fair, I was kinda bored when I wrote it.
@ALL Yes, I get it, we've all dropped our phones before. I guess I expected a bit more from Sammy since my little old HTC hero that I beat halfway to hell is still going strong, while I pampered this nexus and its already giving me problems >1 year in but that's a whole different discussion I suppose.

great mine just went out yesterday... had mine for a ltl over a year now.
No tapping certain areas or anything works.
I did notice it slowly degrade over the past few weeks.
I used the fix my power button app so my volume keys wake up my phone, but sometimes after using that 5 or 6 times it will stop working too so i have to plug my phone in the charger to turn it on. Is there another way of getting the volume keys to act as a wake button??
edit: i'm gonna try out that button remapper i saw in an earlier post.

if you are using an ics rom go to the main settings, security, lockscreen.. now disable the lockscreen. you can now wake your device with the volume button. its a feature built into ics.
interesting did not know this. Thanks, I think I'm still gonna use the button remapper to change the function of the search key to the power so I can reboot and stuff and go into recovery and such easier since i'm running cm9.

no. the button remapper app doesnt do anything when off or the screens off. honestly, i no boot many times a week(because i test the trinity kernel as its being developed before release), ive figured out a system of light taps near the power button to let the volume buttons let me scroll, and to select in the bootloader.so for me its a non issue. to power up from being powered up, i dont do anything. a, pluging in powers it. b, tapping the back powers it when no usb is available. c, it powers up by itself usually, seconds to a few minutes after powering off.
Being a heavy user of my nexus s since July 2011, the power button died last Sunday.
One of the most important problems i had after that was that i was unable to lock bootloader before giving the mobile to samsung service, because the stuck power button caused problems to fastboot commands and the bootloater usage(menu) in general.
Finally i decided to go to the service and give the phone. The result was that in about an hour they replaced the button and gave me back the mobile. The repair was covered by the 2 years warranty and the unlocked bootloader did not cause any problem to that.
Up to now i have a "brand new" nexus s and i hope that the new button will last much longer.
