I went and bricked my SGS again and thought great.. time to exchange again right? Wrong.
My Bell SGS is one of those cute ones that has no download mode. I thought all hope was lost. It wasn't.
It's simple, adb reboot recovery works fine. But trying to adb is a pain in the ass. Easy solution.
1) Get the one click root/unroot tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742403
2) Use the tool--any setting is fine, all we're using this for is getting into recovery mode. I clicked unroot 2.1.
3) Surprise! The tool can communicate with the phone just fine even though the phone is failing to boot. You're now in recovery mode.
4) Wipe the data and the cache on the device, and you're good as new. No flashing of update.zip required.
I guess that:
adb reboot recovery
would also work then?

You know, I have no idea. I'm assuming so since that's what I believe his software calls upon, but I've never actually tried it.
define your "bricked"
did you get this screen of
pc-!-phone ?
because in that screen, the phone is not recognized by windows when you plug in the USB cable
so ADB doesn't work when it's the phone is not listening to the PC

If your phone is 3 button disabled, no chance of recovery. If you have 3 button recovery enabled, it's no big deal.
Cant you just send it into Samsung to recover it if its under warentee??

it's called a SPL, it might be possible to be fixed if some developers figures out how to copy a good SPL over the defective SPL, but at the moment there is no fix

Someone please help
I was trying to run the DTJG4 with the 512 PITT through ODIN when it failed.
I tried again and it didnt flash, so I tried rebooting the phone.
Now I get nothing... just a black screen.
Plug in the power, nothing, plug in the USB, nothing.
Battery removed several times and tried powering up just with power and battery, and trying 3 button combo that didnt work before, but still nothing.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I had I9000M do this, 3 button mode was not working and had to return it. It happened during a kies update, luckly, 20 minutes after I had bought it. So I went to a different store and got my current phone. This phone is the best one of the three I've owned. Either 3 button mode just works, and the g-sensor calibration is much closer to being dead on. So there are good ones out there.
I've had 3 total. Here's a breakdown.
1. Purchased august 6th. First phone sold in the store. Download and Recovery modes worked 25% of the time. G-sensor calibration was horrible. Also could not be unlocked.
2. August 21st. Could not get the phone into either mode with button presses. Phone unlocked, but bricked via kies update. Never got to test the g-sensor. Last phone in same store as first purchase.
3. August 21st. Near perfect phone. 100% sucess gettung into download or recovery modes. Unlocked easily, and G-sensor is just slightly off. No need for calibration, unless using as leveling device. Purchased at a store that got initial stock on august 8th.
So, there ARE good phones out there. But the majority by the sounds of it are less than good. Which is unforunate.
As a former samsung owner as well, this is dissapointing. The original galaxy i7500L is still officially running android 1.5 in canada. I just hope and pray samsung doesn't drop this device from their dev cycles. And better yet.. Can fix all these problems with an update somehow...
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
So, only that specific screen counts as a brick?
On mine the 3 button combo doesn't work (I can only get to some weird "upload mode"), and the phone is stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000" screen when I boot it up.
Does that mean I should still be able to use ADB with it? The PC seems to recognize the phone (as "SAMSUNG USB Composite Device"), as well as Odin, but ADB doesn't.

I have just upgraded to FROYO through KIES after 3 HOURS of waiting.
But my is stuck at boot screen & vibrates..
i had tried the recovery but no use.
please help me...
Take the battery out, try recovery mode again.
Or you didnt uninstall your lagfix before updating.. If so, do a factory reset in the recovery console.
i did that by VOLUME UP + HOME + POWER.
it went into recovery mode i did every thing NO USE.
did wipe all data, factory, format sd card. Still no use.
i heard about hard reset VOLUME DOWN + (press & release) POWER
then clear storage.
BUT HARD RESET is not working for me..

If you are able to enter to download mode then try reflashing via odin it should work.

how much time would it take through ODIN for flashing???
I got the same issue here. And my SGS can not boot into download mode by hold 3 buttons.
Anyone knows what's the option for me now?
Thanks
Hi
I had the same issue it vibrated and didn't boot up. Remove SD Card, go to recovery via VOL UP + HOME + POWER button when you see boot screen releae all buttons. You are in recovery mode. Vol up down and select wipe data/ factory reset, confirm and your device shall boot.
My SGS booted after this and Yes I had OCLF lagfix installed, device rooted which I didn't remove prior to update. Now its fine again.
Now i tried to flash it through ODIN.
It was taking a long time so i stopped

From this screen you sholud be able to enter in downloadmode. And, but I'm not sure, from this screen Kies should be able to recover the phone too...
Any way:
Always is a solution.... Search here, on forum, about JIG method to unbrick Galaxy S. You have to made a 301kohms rezistor and connect it on 2 pins from a usb cable. You'll see more pictures, it's easy to made it...
This JIG rezistor will always put the phone in download mode. From here you can reflash with Odin any rom you want.
But, if Odin stopped, there are 2 possibilities: you don't have the phones drivers installed corectly, or (and most important) you don't close Kies from Task Manager before launch Odin. If Kies is runing will take the comm port busy and Odin can't use it to comunicate with the phone.
Always close all Kies applications before flashing with Odin. It's very important.
Good luck.

have you tried adb search youtube for a tutorial. you can reboot/recovery or download and much much more.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN DEBUGGING MODE WITH ADB. and i take out the sim card and ext sd card.
you use commands like c:\androidsdk\tools\adb reboot download
c:\androidsdk\tools\adb reboot recovery
c:\androidsdk\tools\adb reboot
also try apk 3.0 this lets you install apk's via your pc right to your phone, search for z4root apk on this site and use adb to reboot into recovery to apply update.zip
hope this helps, i also have no 3 button combo

Not sure why you would purposly stop Odin while it was running. All you are doing is creating a worse and worse situation for yourself by doing things like that.
It seems to me that you do not know enough about flashing, etc to even be concidering doing so, so... I reccomend that after you finally get your device up and running again that you ONLY flash through Kies and dont do anything else as you will likely end up with one issue after the other...

I am not familiar with the assembly and disassebly of tablets/phones but i have played around with the disassebly of a car's ecu. When a definition or usb cable is bad when flashing the ecu, bricking the ecu happens instantly but 95% of the time the bricked ecu can be recovered very easily with a power supply.
If i happened to brick the Nexus 7, can it be easily recovered?

Even though I have a bricked unit, it was because I was doing something stupid. 99% of the time, you can't really brick your tablet. Even if you screw it up where it won't boot, you can still connect it to the PC and push a factory reset to it and have it restored.
I've already done this a few times. The first time I freaked out, but once you restore it the first time you find out it's all gravy.
As long as you can get into the bootloader (power+ volume buttons when powered off) , and you have the factory image from here you can reflash it
how can you push it? if it wont get past the screen. I can get into recovery btw
extract the factory image to your folder with fastboot (typically platform-tools) then go into the bootloader and use the commands here

fastboot or adb from the PC is the short answer.
I couldn't even get into the Bootloader. It just stayed off. The screen wouldn't come on. The only thing I could do was get an APX connection on the PC which is completely useless at this point. Nothing worked.
I couldn't even get the screen to come on thus NO FASTBOOT commands. If anyone knows how to restore a N7 without adb or fastboot commands, I'd be thankful.
I returned mine back to Staples. If your screen turns on and gets stuck at the Google Logo or you can get into Recovery, then it isn't bricked and easily fixable.
Try the nexus toolkit. Worked for me!!

I think I may have finally killed mine.
I was flashing back to stock (woke up at 3am and couldn't get back to sleep. What else was there to do?) and in the middle of the toolkit sending "system" my data cable came loose. Fun! So I rebooted and had toolkit push again...waited 20 minutes with no luck.
So I did it all again and left the bastard on while I'm at work. Unless its pregnant...it shouldn't need more than 9 hours to push right?

Try using fastboot commands rather than the toolkit so we know where it's erroring out and can potentially help.

You may also try the tot method.
Can you recognize if the image behind the lines is small (centered on the screen) or a larger one ?
Because it might be that you've got blue circles, which are shown prior to entering the actual download mode..

I don't actually know if its going into download mode or not. I've taken another photo as below which shows what my phone looks like when plugged in, the lines move around like an animation to start of with then settle in this position - there isn't actually anything behind the lines. It's almost as if the screen is messed up and the pictures aren't displaying correctly. I seriously doubt it is a hardware issue as it was working just fine before using AutoRec.

So, I researched XDA forums and someone suggested pressing the Home+Power+Volume up. When I do it, it just enters a loop vibrating every 10 secs (approximately) with a black screen as per this picture
Continued researching XDA forums and found another post telling me to try pressing Home+Power+Volume down to enter an emergency menu. I did so and got the following screen with 2 options (Continue or cancel). I chose continue
When I pressed the volume button up, it showed me the following screen, and stayed there for at least 10 minutes
This reminded me I tried to install a new ROM about 2 years ago (this was my first Android phone), didn't work, but the phone worked well until I dropped it, 2 years after I tried installing a new ROM!
So, I tried repeating the same steps, but this time cancel it. It was stuck in the splash screen again.
In the meantime, I got myself a new phone and the only thing I want to do is to recover the pictures and videos I had in the Note 3.
When I connect the Galaxy Note 3 to my laptop using the original cable, when it's stuck on the splash screen, the laptop doesn't recognize the device and therefore doesn't read the content. The same applies if I press Home+Power+Volume up or Volume down.
What are my options? Is it possible to recover the phone maintaining the contents? Is there a physical device I can use to recover the data (ie. dismantle the phone and read the "hard drive" directly)?
Any help will be very appreciated. Many thanks in advance!
It seems a hardware problem, 'cause it occurs after a shock.
But, before going to panic or to pay a repair, you can try to extract the battery (though maybe it was already got off the phone on the fall).
Wait a minute or so, then re-connect the battery, restart the phone and pray...
Try again the Recovery mode : the home >vol up>power buttons (press Power as the last button). If you enter recovery, make a Factory reset.
If not Recovery, go to download mode, as your 3rd photo. Flash a STOCK firmware, this will not change your Knox.
It is all I can say about. Maybe another more expert member can give you better advice.
Still no joy

It seems a hardware problem, 'cause it occurs after a shock.
But, before going to panic or to pay a repair, you can try to extract the battery (though maybe it was already got off the phone on the fall).

Hi afternoon2 - thank you for your help. I have removed the battery and restarted the phone 1 million times. Unfortunately, it never progressed beyond the splash screen.
When I go into recovery mode (Home+Power+Volume up) it goes into vibrating cycle but never displays anything on the screen as described.
Any other suggestions folks?
even with it doing all that, can you hook it up as a us b device to get your data?

Hi gad42000 - thank you for the suggestions. Nope, when I plug in the phone via USB I can't see the phone on the laptop and therefore can't access any of the folders.
Is it possible to read the "hard drive" via some other hardware?
If it's a hardware problem (which I also believe it is) what can I do to recover the data?
I would in your shoes .
Install Samsung USB Drivers .
Change USB Port and change USB cable .

Hi JJEgan - thank you for the suggestion. I have installed the Samsung drivers via Kies and the cable is brand new. How do I change the USB port?
I think he means try different USB ports on the computer.

Hi audit13 - thanks for clarifying. Do you have any other suggestions on how to retrieve data?
Recuva if you can connect .
Or a Data Recovery Service may help but expensive .

What do you mean by "data". Your media, photos, etc, or the apps data?
My advice is to enter download mode, flash through Odin stock firmware and see what you get. Pick up the know how in the "General" forum of this device.
If success, you will not lose your media data.
If you can get the phone recognized by the computer, you could flash twrp, boot into twrp, mount the data partition, and copy the data to the computer.

Hi JJEgan - thank you for the suggestion. Any chance I can dismantle the phone and read the drive (ie. like the ones you connect hard drives to and mount as a USB)?

If the computer read the device, then he can recover not only the media but also the whole device by flashing it's latest firmware via Odin!

Apart from what flashing the firmware wipes .

A phone maybe recognised by a computer but that does not automatically mean Odin can be flashed.
Hello,
I have really killed my phone. Was testing the Linux swapping feature to increase my overall RAM size up to 4GB. Made the partition in the SD Card and all. But at the time of swapping is when I messed up the device, now it does not respond to anything! :
Of course, it doesn't boot
It does not reply to any keypress (even if I press Power button for more than 10 seconds)
Does not respond to the RESET button (that one next to the SIM tray)
Does not respond to charger (no signs of life, really)
Neither responds to USB connection (like I wouldnt have connected anything)
So neither fastboot/flash mode
COMPLETELY DEAD (like it was not any electronic device, just a mobile sample)
All I did for it was to swap the incorrect partition (the correct one should be mmcblk1p2):
mkswap /dev/block/mmcblk0p2;
echo 60 > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
swapon /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
<then reboot>

So I write this thread, in order you can avoid this situation. DO NOT DO THIS!!!
If any one has any idea about how to make it alive again, is welcome
Hopefully I would still be able to reclaim warranty service, because SONY would never know what happened to the device as it is completely dead :silly::silly::silly:

May be good way to get warranty actually
I agree with Pisiont, let us know what happens
I also agree with Pisiont, if you still have warranty... make use of it, maybe they'll accept the phone as BER (beyond economical repair) and send a new one : DDDDDD
"It does not reply to any keypress (even if I press Power button for more than 10 seconds)"
AFAIK pressing the power button doesn't do anything unless you press it together with both volume keys at the same time... then it should vibrate three times and completely shut down (as you removed battery). of course if your baby is completely bricked that probably doesn't help...
how about mkfs.ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
I found that there is a possibility to restore the device from Hard Brick. Suddenly the computer started recognising the Z3C as 'SOMC Flash device'. However, I cant Flashtool a ftf file because it does not detect the device.
I noticed that the LED shows red for a few seconds then turns off again and nothing...
I would try to QPST but I do not have the files

I tried this one but it does not find the device either (tried with 'fastboot_edl devices' and 'fastboot_edl reboot')

Which flashtool version are you using? Try older version 0.9.18.6 or 0.9.22.3 for example, might solve the detection issue

Hello. Someone use this script and send the device to sony for the warranty? They accepted the phone?
I want to send the phone to Sony, if I'm lucky they can also give me a new phone (like z5 compact, x compact) ecc..

So you basically want to brick your phone, send it to Sony and hope they send you a X Compact like they did for @Wajk.
Wow.

Sorry but I wont tell if they accepted or not, I think that is not a good action. If all the people did like this then the warranty service would be more strict than it currently is, they wouldnt allow us to unlock the bootloader, etc...
I think this thread should be closed...

I wasnt going to do that, currently I'm facing other, very frustrating issues... Just curious. I might need to sent it to warranty because of different reasons anyway...
Okay, so you got a new phone. Thanks
