I am having a problem with the email app, and wonder if anyone has seen this or can suggest a solution.
When I open the app to add an email account, I get a window which (patronizingly) explains how I will be done in 2 easy steps; I hit Next; I get a window asking for url and password ECXEPT this time the Next box is grayed out. I can't hit Next! There is also a "Manual Setup" button next to the Next button but it is also gray and I cannot press it either. My only option is to escape. I reset to factory settings. Same problem. There must be a defect in my factory settings? Is this a symptom of a bigger problem? Can I fix this, or download a fresh copy? How do I check email?
thanks to anyone who can solve this riddle,
alphanzo
have you tried entering your email and password?
yeah its not URL is email you put in.And the email app sucks anyways. go to market place and download k-9. Its much better, with the same type of easy setup.
Of course I've tried that. For instance, I type: mail.pas.rochester.edu. and [password], still nothing. And why would "manual setup" also not work? I don't want load my phone with redundant apps, and iif this one is not working how do I know there isn't a greater problem?
Its not asking for a url or your email server ip. Its asking for your actual email address. ie [email protected]ter.edu or whatever it may be.

What type of email are you trying to set up? I had the same problem when trying to set up my hotmail account. It wont accept much except gmail, i think?
it accepts most pop3/imap style email boxes
E-mail configuration on G1
Hi friends,
I have another problem with e-mail (POP3/IMAP) application on G1.
Everything's working fine except the e-mail automatic checking (that could be set up on some period of time) and deleting messages from the server.
1. Automatic checking (for POP3 or IMAP settings) is not working - don't know why... So, I have to check e-mail manually by clicking in Inbox or using refresh button
2. Deleting messages (for POP3 settings) is not working at all. Even if it is set up to delete messages from the server and message is deleted - it is going to Trash folder, then if it is deleted from Trash and refreshed it is still existing on the server and in the Trash folder on G1. I really don't know how to get it working... I have tried a few settings and it is not removing messages from the server at all.
Is anybody have it working? Thanks in advance for any help!
Regards.
Zencooler
It is the same for me using [email protected] with the correct password, just keeps saying that the username or password is wrong, which it isnt.
got my HD2 and cannot get gmail/googlemail to work, tried manual and auto. The HD2 keeps saying account user name or password wrong. it isnt. Activesync works, but i prefer gmail via imap.
any help please
I'm sure you have but have you tried your full email address as the username as well as just your name i.e. [email protected] or myname?
Sometimes I find it changes on what is required depending on where you are trying to access it from.

Tried Imap, worked.
i cannot get it to work!
Did you have it working on your previous phone or is this the first time you've used this service? Just checking as you need to activate pop3 or IMAP in Google settings first online.

i hace had it working many times.
Well if you had it working before and checked all the obvious settings, then I'm slightly stuck as Xmoo seems to be fine.
If no one else can help then I suppose it's HTC support that's where you need to try next....
I'll check mine tomorrow when it arrives...

maybe wrong password?
i wish it was that simple. i wonder if its because i came from htc hero?
also, no email accounts i setup synced until i went into the email account options and changed "the internet" to "t-mobile internet". so much for sim auto setup.

Coming from a Hero shouldn't make a difference. The Hero was using gmail push unless you manually configured imap on it.
Might be worth just double checking the ports etc to make sure. Don't get me wrong, I think you've probably got it all right, but best to be sure!
I'll be checking mine when I get it on Friday so if I have the problem, ill let you know, but I'm sure you'll have it sorted before then.
Sim Auto set up is great for novices, but not always what more experienced users want. I had to change my APN settings on hero to get faster / unproxied internet from o2.
Thanks everyone. Got it working.
I went into my gmail via pc and once again went into settings. This time I disabled pop (it was enabled along with imap) and from HD2 homescreen I added a new account. However, I didnt select GMail option, just other but everything just worked. Also, I didnt need to change the settings with the email account setup to "Tmobile Internet" as the "The Internet" setting just worked. Really really odd.
So I dont know if it was cured by turning off the pop setting, or setting gmail up on the HD2 via the other email option, but it works
Thanks for everyone who replied.
I have a similar but differnet issues.
Using Google exchange sync. it pushes contacts and calendar, but wont push ANY mail to my device (it synced the folders tho!) i've checked the dates, and the ranges to download, and it just wont do it at all. tried checking th ebox, unchecking th ebox, rechecking thebox (some people said it was second time lucky for them)
I've set up gmail as IMAP in the interim and that works fine. but im stumped as to why it wont exchange sync with the rest of the stuff!
Ok, i figured out my issue, and im surprise dit isnt documented anywher eon google,i found it on one of their forums and a member there discovered it, not a google Mod.
If you have subfolder under your inbox, it wont work.
i.e. if you have any "/" in your google mail labels (which is how GMAIL sets itself up if you use outlookwith IMAP on it),then it wont sync
i had sub folder sin outlook, so in gmail they becme labels such as:
Inbox/Ebay
Inbox/personal
and the "/" trips up the exchange sync. which seems very strange considering that the phone correctly recognises them as labels.
I had the same issue: my HD2 didn't want to sync with google. So I tried the option of disabling POP. At first it didn't work. But after I changed [email protected] to [email protected] it suddenly worked. I hope this helpes someone.
It worked for me but it doesnt push :S and ive set it to upon arrival of new mail or w.e it says..
It just doesnt push anything
I've got my gmail push working ok but, probs a silly question, how do you change the name of the account as mine is showing as Outlook and I've searched everywhere I know and can't find an option to change it to gmail

I was having the same exact issue and manually disabling POP from the web solved it for me! IMAP now working perfectly.
Balls. Spoke too soon. Still not working for me. Get the same username/pass error as before.
WooHoo!
Using the "Other" email account option seems to have fixed it. There must be something screwy in the IMAP settings that HTC Sense uses by default when you select Google Mail.
Ok,
This is getting weird now. I have two gmail accounts configured using the same method, one works perfectly and consistently, the other sporadically fails to connect/log-on etc...
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
EDIT:
There's no rhyme or reason to this. One account works perfectly everytime, the other account will work sometimes then randomly throw the username/password error.
I was forced to change my password today due to 30 day timing on the email password.
So where in the Atrix do I change the gmail password? I tried, accounts, gmail but there is no password box/option in there.
Any ideas?
I'm not understanding: GMAIL doesn't force you to change passwords at thirty days.

Well I work for the largest company in the world that uses Gmail as it's email system. Therefore gmail has corporate requirements of password changes.

Delete the account, and add it back up. Problem solved
"Therefore gmail has corporate requirements of password changes."
I understand now, but I think you mean "our corporate IP has requirements of password changes". GMAIL is incidental, their email policy probably applies to all email.
I poked around and saw no way to change passwords, that's odd. Before you try diablo's solution...Try changing the password, then accessing the account with the phone. It MIGHT be one of those invisible Google things, if the password is rejected I would expect the phone to ask you to confirm/re-enter the password. The same way that a lot of email clients do, when they get a "password rejected" messager from a mail server.
Or...ask the whiz kids in corporate IT.<G> I always figured if they're that concerned with security, they should ante up and buy RSA fobs for everyone. THAT's almost security. Passwords? Is it under your mouse pad, or your keyboard?<VBG>
if you use the actual gmail app on the phone, it should ask at some point when it tries to check.
Found this from some other forum:
I needed to change my gmail password for security reasons, but I knew this would mess with the G1 account too, since they use the same login info. I searched for a way to change/update the password on the phone and couldn't find it. So, on a whim I went to google.com/accounts on the browser, signed in, then clicked on "Change Password". After changing it successfully, I went back to the Home Screen on the phone, opened the GMail app, clicked on Menu, then Refresh. I got a sync error, but the notification gives an option to re-enter your password. I entered the new password, and voila, it worked.
Even the reasoning for this is pretty convincing:
i think they designed it like this so if you got your phone "stolen/lost" you HAVE a way to change your password via online rather than you phone cause obvious your phone is stolen/lost =D

I did this on my friends captivate and it worked. However there is no popup for a failed sync that allows you to update the password on the Atrix.
This is insane. Why would I be forced to delete an account and add bak to change a password.

Something is not right.
Look in ur 'status bar' or in the pull down notifications screen.
Are u sure sync ran? Try sending a test mail from a different account to this and see if it retrieves it properly. Reboot phone n see if the sync was using a cached connection.

This is insane. I tried synching in accounts and in gmail app as well. It fails but no option to reenter the password. Even google talk fails but only a retry option or a cancel option.
Since this is my master account I have to factory reset.

Wait. Try going to settings --> applications, and clear data for gmail, gmail storage, etc n see if that works.
I read horror stories about this but when I changed my password I was prompted. I forced a gmail sync which failed and it put an exclaimation mark in the notification bar which I dragged down and clicked. Prompted for a new password and then I was good to go. This was on a phone with Sense and 2.2
Only thing I would worry is if moto screwed it up but I doubt it.

This is absolutely insane that you cannot change a gmail password. Can anyone else try it? You can always change yours back...I can't since I cannot reuse passwords for 180 days.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to return the phone since I love it but I can't go through this every 30 days!

It worked fine for me. Got the little exclamation point notification, clicked, and entered my new password. Are you not getting that? Could it be some setting on your company's side? When you try and refresh your gmail app, does it just do nothing?

I have tried to sync in both the gmail app and sync in the accounts area in settings. Nothing really happens and definitely no notifications of failure in the app. When I try to sync in settings>accounts I get the following: Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." That is next to a sync logo with the red exclamation point in it. That notification appears in the window at the bottom and not in the notification bar.
When I have cell access again I will change my personal gmail account and see if I get a notification.
Ok so a bit more movement on the topic. I do get the notification that asks for the new password on my personal gmail account. I do not get that notification for the corporate gmail account.
Any ideas now?
Well it is working now. Did a factory reset, setup account again. It was working, changed my corporate gmail password and this time on t he phone I got the notification.
Only difference was that I did not have it rooted at the time. Hopefully it doesn't happen again!
Hi guys.
When I first got my S4, I decided to use G-Mail like I normally do. I turned off the notifications for the stock E-Mail program on the device, and used G-Mail.
Now I want to switch back to the stock E-Mail app. However, I can't figure out how to get the notifications back on. I tried going into the settings on the program, but it looks like "E-Mail notifications" is checked, so it should be working.
I went to the App manager and checked out the info for Email under the "All" tab. The "Show Notifications" has a greyed out checkmark next to it. Not sure why it's not green, but shouldn't it still work? Not sure why it's not giving me notifications.
When you went to email settings, did you click on your email addy to get to the rest of the settings? Just asking.

Yes, I did. You know what though? I just got a notification for an Email. I guess I was just surprised that it took so long. Took about an hour, it seemed. I tested G-Mail and it seems like it takes 3-5 minutes at most to get a notification for an e-mail I changed the settings in the default Email program to sync every 15 minutes.. I'm thinking that should make the notifications come more often. I wish it had G-Mail speed though. Main reason I want to use the Samsung program is for the SmartScreen features. Hopefully there will be a G-Mail app w/ SmartScreen support soon.
the Gmail app will push emails down. The standard doesn't do that for gmail unless you set it up as an exchange account, and instead poll's the server at a set interval that you can select.

It would be nice if I could select 5 minutes, but the minimum is 15 minutes apparently. How would I set it up as an exchange account?
Add a new exchange account to sync with. Where it asks for server, use m.google.com. Your username / password are the same as normal. Thats all

Hmm I tried doing this but I'm getting a Setup could not finish message "Unable to connect to server". I tried to make an exchange account and it automatically chose m.google.com. I used my normal username/PW. Not sure what the deal is. Do I need some kind of certificate?

If anyone is interested, the Exchange service on the G4 (at least the T-Mobile version) can be disabled via the apps menu and Google Exchange services can be installed.
This will allow you to use the GMail app with Exchange enabled hosts, like Hotmail/Outlook.com and retain push mail, contact and calendar sync.
Recommended steps:
If you have any accounts using email and exchange, remove them first.
Open Settings/General/Apps/All
Tap on Exchange (The LG one with the blue icon)
Force stop
Disable the Exchange Service
(Restarting your phone is recommended at this point)
Install Google Exchange Services
(Restarting your phone is recommended at this point as well)
Open GMail and you will have Exchange as an option when you add an account.
This is gold to me.
Thanks.
sweet thx!
edit: oops that didn't work for me it gets stuck constantly sync'ing and has some exchange service crashes hmm...
Works fine here so far. I just wish you could disable the remote administration requiring your device to use a PIN. I'd love to use Smart Lock.

It's important that you remove any old exchange accounts in email first, then force close the LG exchange service and disable it. If you don't disable it, then GMail will get stuck syncing.

Just waiting on root so I can keep my damn unlock screen without having to put in an 8 character password with numbers and special characters every time I want to unlock my phone.
I might just bite the bullet and buy touchdown for $20 because I heard it doesn't need to apply the permissions to your whole phone but just the app.

This. I have used Smart Lock on my N5 with no problems even though we are required to have a PIN. Fired up the G4 and immediately noticed once I setup email Smart Lock was grey and can't be used. I thought that by switching to Gmail for my Exchange email I could get around that only to find Gmail doesn't have Exchange support on this phone (until I found this thread).
Has anyone that has followed the instructions at the top been able to get Smart Lock working when Gmail is used for Exchange email? Or does Touchdown get around this?
I am going to test this out tonight - can't goof around too much while on the job!!

Outlook bypasses the security requirement, but it appears to only sync email, not calendars or contacts. You get prompted that Exchange wants you to accept these changes, but you have an option to deny them.

I'll have to look at that new outlook app closer then. It prompted me for the security permissions to wipe phone, pin, and all that crap so I exited out.
Touchdown is supposed to be all one contained environment so I don't think it syncs with the default apps. I could be wrong as I have never tried it since I always got a PIN bypasser working on my old phones. It is free for a month so try it out! I don't care about contacts and it would be nice to have calendar but I'm not heartbroken over it. What I would like to know is if you still get a notification of new mail. I would assume so but aren't allowed to preview it which is fine but I at least need to know I have mail.

Yeah that request seems to be standard whenever you setup Outlook, regardless of app. It was when it came to the lock screen settings, it allowed me to dismiss it.
I just tried the Outlook app and it required far less permissions then adding an exchange email through the android/lg settings. The regular settings wanted pretty much everything. Wipe, disable camera, password type, password length, password expiration, encrypt phone, disable sd card, etc etc. It had everything and probably because my company just checked everything. Now the question is if it would really do any of those things probably not because that it a further settings in Exchange but it just wants to be able to do all that.
The Outlook just wanted password rules, unlock attempts, lock screen, and encrypt phone. It asked to encrypt and I said no and phone still works. I was able to keep pattern lock screen but it disabled everything else besides pin and password. The Outlook app does not integrate well with Android so everything is contained in it's own app. I don't think it does notifications either since I sent an email and waited a good 10 minutes. My phone never went off but I open the app the email shows up but never as a notification.
So maybe the Outlook app will get you by for the time being.
Hrm - I'm on an LG G4 (EU H815 model, unlocked). No Google Exchange Services visible or available in the Play Store ...
I also have an old Galaxy S3 running 5.1.1 (PacMan rom) - that has Gmail with Exchange working just fine. It has the same version of Gmail as on the G4, but also has "Exchange Services" running. I can't find any other information on that though.
[EDIT] I just checked the link in the OP which looks like the latest apk, but the button for Play Store doesn't work - URL doesn't exist.
Quick question - I haven't disabled LG Exchange on the G4 yet - when I do it says that the app will be hidden from then on. What if one wants to re-enable it - will it still be visible on the Apps menu ?
TIA

Have you been able to figure this out? I have coworkers on a N6, N5, and a HTC One (M7), who all have our Corporate E-mail linked to their phone via either gmail or the htc e-mail app. They can all access their respective Smart Lock settings. On my phone, its grayed out.
Confused on what this does? Just lets you add a second exchange account to gmail? Are emails mixed together or do they remain separated? I like having my Email and Gmail in 2 different apps. I also like the LG email app.
