What to do next addons/apps? - XPERIA X10 General

Right, I have debranded and updated to R2BA026. But I am not really sure what to do next, other than maybe add a theme? I still have the blue background on most screens and what to get a more modded feel.
Can anyone recommend which themes and I presume Beautiful Widgets? Also would be nice to get a list of essential (and non) apps, both paid and free.
Cheers

Tasker rocks my world.

Wel there's two dark themes by 2 dif people in the themes n apps thread! I'm new n iv decided to use one of them themes from before to modify it to my needs. I think I've done a pretty gud job so far!

Anything else?

You can get apps such as
Titanium backup (free & paid version) - for backing up apps, uninstalling n so forth!
Barnacle wifi tethering (free version) - for broadcasting your 3g signal as a wifi signal to other devices. (note.. if you do get this app. Go into settings and put athwlan0 in the 'lan' settings and make sure your wifi is off n 3g is on before you press the start button!
Shootme (free version) - take screenshot of your phones display
Mybackup (free version) - back up contacts sms emails n so forth.. there's also a full version called mybackuppro altho not sure about the differences! lol
Typefresh (free version) - used for changing fonts!
I'm sure there's more out there
Hope it helps!!

[Q] Please recommend apps - Milestone 2

First of all.. the moderators can move this to another section if this isn't the correct place to be posting this...
I have been waiting for the Milestone 2 section to pop up to ask this... but I guess that might take a little longer...
I'm using the stock ROM from Motorola Froyo 2.2.. My phone is rooted though... Not a big fan of BLUR for obvious reasons.. (Angdroid .. we are waiting for ur custom ROM eagerly to get rid of BLUR.. kudos to u bro to help us out)
So I want some recommendations on the apps that I should use for the list below. I'm using some apps but since the android world in full of awesome apps.. I just wanted to make sure that I'm using the best of the best..
I would really appreciate if someone can give a reason as to why I should NOT use a particular app..
Task Killer - _________ (using Avanced task killer)
Alarm & Timer - ________ (using stock) (hopefully nothing fancy is necessary here)
File Manager - _________(ASTRO)
Calendar - ___________ (using stock)
Dictionary - __________ (required. Preferably offline)
Camera - ___________ (using stock)
Camcorder - __________ (using stock)
Contacts - __________ (using stock)
Dialler - ___________ (using stock)
Office app - _________ (got Quickoffice as stock)
Browser - ___________ (Dolphin HD and Opera Mini)
Social Networking - _________ (I only use Facebook and I have got the official App)
Picture Gallery - ________ (Got QuickPic.. looking for something a little more fancy here)
Music Player - ___________ (got stock n WinAmp)
Text Messaging - __________ (Stock)
Exchange - ____________ (heard a lot about Exchange by Touchdown)
Launcher - ______________ (using Launcher Pro)
Other than that I have Google Goggles, Google Sky Maps, Google Maps, SetCPU, XDA app n Youtube..
One more thing, I would really appreciate if someone can suggest apps (especially launcher) which can give me better battery life..
Would also appreciate any interesting app that I'm missing..
Thanks in advance for your suggestions..
You don't need a task killer. FroYo is designed to handle running apps optimally and a task killer just gets in the way of doing that.
okay... thanks for tht....
Any other suggestions??
Well I keep advanced task killer froyo in case an app starts acting up and I need to kill it. I never kill everything though.
A great music player is miui music. Very good ui, downloads lyrics and album artwork free.
Miren web browser from the miui rom is also great.
Widgetlocker is nice. Widgets on your lockscreen and its only $1.
Launcherpro is a great home replacement to get ride of the blur launcher. Its super smooth and snappy. Paid version has some nice widgets.
Hope you find this helpful.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Thanks.. I'll try out miui music and miren browser.. Not to keen on keeping widgets on lock screen, so would keep away from Widgetlocker..
Have tried both Launcher Pro and ADWlauncher... Launcher Pro is super snappy... but ADWlauncher is catching up fast... Plus it has got loads of themes.. I cant decide between the two at the moment.. I guess battery consideration will dictate terms there....
More suggestions are welcome...
Root Explorer is a good file manager because it gives you access to your /system folder so you can eliminate those annoying camera shutter sounds. It costs $10.

Android mate is a free alternative to root explorer. It gives you root access to your /system folder. It might not have as many features as root explorer, but that's the price you pay for not paying lol

Facebook
Fancy Widget (HTC Clock type widget)
Fissiom Rom Manager
Google Goggles (Take pictures of things and automagically googles them)

XDA app of course
Just a few apps I use on my phone.
Thanks Mike for the list..
I do have Ad Free, Angry Birds, Facebook, Google Goggles n XDA apps..
Will give compass a try (donno how useful it is for me though).. CNET news and Google earth also seem to be good options...
About Droid overclock.. I did try Milestone overclock n was able to overclock my phone to 1300 MHz.. but my battery doesnt seem to last long (even without overclocking it hardly lasts a day).. Do u guys have a similar issue without battery?? If yes, can you suggest some ways to conserve it??
@orkillakilla: I have ASTRO.. Is Android mate a better option??

Im guessing since you have the Milestone 2 you prolly don't have it ROMed which I dont think you can at this point and time. There in lies your problem, the MotoBlur absolutely HATES batterys. Before I ROMed my phone I could barely last a day with mild useage, I can now last at least a day and a half. With overclocked =P.
To conserve use WiFi whenever possible. Put the screen brightness as low as you can tolerate it. If you don't mind disconnect your facebook account from your phone (That is constantly pulling data which is a main cause of battery drain).
Also, If you just got the phone I'm sure you are using it a ton which may drop off as time goes on (Once you get used to having this amazing mini computer in your pocket lol) which will drop the battery usage that display uses.
I also use "Data counter widget" because the native data counter bonkers :-(
There are Engadget, xda and Facebook apps in the store.
For internet tethering I use PdaNet - great app!
PowerAMP is my favorite music player. Haven't played much with it though.
QuickDic as dictionary.
QuickPic is okay, I use native Gallery.
Shakespeare App is great. All his books for free!
Widgetsoid to create my own widgets. Like it alot.
As for games I'm currently looking for a strong mills game. I have downloaded all mills game from the store but they all suck. Way too easy. The same for "Stratego" clone Legions...nice, but way too easy...
iPhone has a better choice for apps...really sucks

That is surely true..
But I dont think we Milestone 2 users are gonna see a custom ROM anytime soon... though m keeping my fingers crossed...
@oTToToTenTanz: Data counter is a good suggestion.. m nt too keen on games (except for angry birds) as I use my PSP for that...

Freezing Apps on Pro / Running Rooted GB

I love Gingerbread on the Pro, and love having it rooted (kudos to P3), but have noticed that its a little trickier to freeze unwanted apps (via Titanium Backup) without stumbling upon system conflicts.
Note - I use Launcher Pro Plus for my launcher app. I also use Handcent for SMS and K9 for all my email (4 gmail/google apps accounts); no MS Exchange
Thus far, the things I have successfully frozen:
Bookmarks Widget
CityID
Email
Email Authenticator
Files
Flickr
Help Center
Home screen tips
LastFM
Messaging
My Verizon Mobile
Myspace
New & Weather
News
NFS Shift
Orkut
Photobucket
Quickoffice
Rich Location
Skype mobile
Skyrock Authenticator
Social Messaging
Social Messaging Services
Social Networking
Social Sharing
Social Status
Task Manager

in my experience, freezing the authenticators seems to cause my motorola contacts to force close; e.g. I can't open any contacts. Not sure if skyrock messes anything up but probably check just in case

Agree. I have gone through several iterations arriving at the list that results with no force closes. So far, so good.
I've frozen DLNA as well, but it still seems to show up on my watchdog so I had to rename the apk to get rid of it.

As far as I know, there are 2 apps for DLNA. The first has the obvious name of DLNA but there is a second one where it has a different name but has "dlna" in the service name. Found using SystemApkManager
great list!
I followed this list and everything went great (but I did not freeze anything, I just cut & paste all apps on my SD card), except I lost my Messaging application (duh!) So I put the messaging APK back in the system/app folder and restarted, but the Messaging app still doesn't show in the app drawer. Any ideas? Am I supposed to "ADB Push" it?
Help Anyone?
Update: So I was trying to flash the TBH Gingerbread files via recovery & the flashing was aborted! But when I rebooted I found that my Messaging app has been restored Talk about lucky.

Help! How to ROOT the droid pro
Kudos for the list, and GB on Pro
I too am an avid Gingerbread Boy on Droid Pro. I had a Pro for almost 3 years, running v 2.3.4 (OTA updates from Froyo to GB 2.3.3, then OTW to 2.3.4), but never realized I couldn't root on 2.3.4 so I found a blog by Sarat Marudhuri, "Rooting For Dummies," and was all set to begin following his steps, including flashing back to 2.3.3.
This past Saturday, after a week of thinking my battery was becoming toasted as I couldn't maintain a good 3G signal and the battery kept wearing out in no time because when 3G returned and the Bloatwares all got happy and started up again, I was still avidly pursuing root. Sunday Page Plus had a major server shutdown, both web and phones, and my broker, Prepaid Online, told me all about it, and asked that I keep trying. At 20 minutes before 9 (central), I managed to score on the call in, and hit the "hold circle" with muzak for about 39 minutes, then got a recording stating the office hours, and the office was closed, so try tomorrow. A buddy of mine is manager of a corporate store, and had a Pro that someone had traded in, so he gave it to me. To my surprise, it was pristine in condition, and was still on 2.3.3! Now this evening, I've spent the past 5 hours working through Sarat's blog and yes, I am now officially "ROOTED" although I'm going to stick with the current version and avoid 2.3.4. I used his list to freeze at that Verizon Bloatware, and confirmed his list with your's!
Hats off to XDA-developers for giving us such a great resource to streamline our Android phones!

Any music player that comes with the ROM
Any signed Market or Launcher or Browser (I use newest market, ADWex and Dolphin)
Gallery (I use QuickPic)
Google Voice.apk
Google Quicksearch
Pico TTS
SNSAccount
Any Keyboard (I use Better Keyboard)
Any extra apps the developer put in that I don't use.
*When I say uninstall, I actually pull them out of /system/app and put them in a folder on my SD card, so JIC I want them back for some reason, I can just replace them. Sometimes TBpro won't back up executable portion of the APK, so if you uninstall it, you cannot restore.
These are what I Freeze
Alarm & Clock
Calendar
Device Management
Facebook*
Gmail*
Google+*
Maps*
Any video player (I use Moboplayer and it by far the best out there)
* These four will run in the background whether you have widgets or not, so I freeze and when I need them, I defrost, use and re-freeze.
I freeze
- DSP Manager
- Music (Stock, come with ICS)
- Search
- Setup
Rider, what settings do you use with JD btw? I used to have it on my myTouch 3G Slide, saw some improvement, but instead just turned off data completely unless I needed it.

DELETE THE BLOAT!
Download Root Explorer (i'm not associated with) and go to System/App to remove a lot of the bloatware that came on the phone. I strongly encourage researching what can & can NOT be removed. ALWAYS make a backup. Alternatively, you can use Titanium Backup (free) to uninstall the apps (I only know Root Explorer, it never fails me). Remember, I am not responsible. It will be some time before we have a custom ROM that removes this crap for us.
Here is a list of apps I recently used to remove a lot of bloat (I kept AllShare and ThinkOffice). After you backup, delete, go to settings > Applications > Menu > Filter > Show All and delete the leftovers from the apps, little traces left behind.
In that thread I also saw you can delete data_tmo/games (73MB) if you do not play/deleted The Sims.
Here is a list from the JFD builds (most of these are seen in future versions):
First off all the Standard Apps:
AccountAndSync.apk/odex -> The app in the drawer, not the settings.
AddToHome.apk/odex
AudioPostcard.apk/odex
Avatar.apk/odex -> The app that launches Avatar in the video player.
BuddiesNow.apk/odex
Dlna.apk/odex [Allshare]
FlashPlugin.apk/odex
GoGo.apk/odex
Infoalarm.apk/odex [Daily Briefing]
KindleStub.apk/odex
Layer-samsung.apk/odex
MediaHub.apk/odex
Memo.apk/odex
Mini Diary.apk/odex
MobiTV.apk/odex
MyAccountStub_4-5-10.apk/odex
Myfiles.apk/odex
Sims3_Samsung_Embed_Launcher.apk/odex
slackerradio.apk/odex
Swype-Tips.apk/odex
Telenav.apk/odex
thinkdroid.apk/odex [ThinkFree Office]
vvm-signed.apk/odex -> T-Mobile Visual Voicemail [can be re-downloaded from the market. for some reason that version is the preferred one.]
VoiceRecorder.apk/odex
VoceDialer.apk/odex
Writeandgo.apk/odex
TouchwizWidgets:
Day.apk/odex
DualClock.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_Calenderclock.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_Feedandupdate.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_stockclock.apk/odex
SamsungWidget_Weatherclock.apk/odex

Girl-proof Nexus 7 - lock down apps

Hey. I think my question is mostly around locking down apps somehow.
I have an N7 and i want to be able to give it to girls when they come over to play games, browse the web, Facebook etc.. Can anyone recommend the best way to hide all my stuff? I wanna load it with tonnes of games (all the stuff i bought but never played) but still have an app or two on there for me. Evernote, gmail etc.
I have chameleon and nova launchers, figured in nova i can hide apps but they can just be shown again via the options menu.. There's no password option.
Im running stock jb, rooted.
My only other thought is to manually backup>verify>uninstall via titanium apps like Gmail, then manually restore when i want them??
I searched for app lockers but most seem to be poorly maintained / aren't compatible with jb or are easily bypassed by the recent menu..
Does anyone have any suggestions for a device i can safely share with other people?

This is why I like Go Launcher:
It has a Running Apps section in the App Tray
You can hide apps
You can lock the desktop (nice for kids so they don't screw up your mojo)
While I don't personally use Go Launcher, it is pretty high in features and functionality. It has folder support in both the App drawer and desktop, themeable, and attractive. Sure you CAN unlock apps through options, but they'd probably never find it.
Somewhere I saw a profile manager where you could setup different users with different launchers, wallpapers, and apps. Might be worth checking out.
Go launcher also collects more data than it needs.
Remember CIQ? Yeah like that...

Yeah profile management would be perfect, like a login on a PC.. there was some mention of google getting a patent for this based on face recog but.. I might do a search to see if there is secure profile management somewhere..

Thanks for the tip. I'm wary of those premium but free apps sharing info >_< plus having paid for nova (albeit on the 25c sale) and chameleon, i'd rather find an option that uses those..

You can try app protector apps. You can lock it down with a pin
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I would try a Profile Manager, one for kids/missus, one for you.
Then you can easily switch between them as and when you need.
ZDBox has an app locker which seems to do the job for me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS56ZHdvcmtzLmFuZHJvaWQudG9vbGJveCJd
Yet to try those apps but so far the best solution I've found is to "freeze" the apps in Titanium Backup
It moves the links from the launcher.. every launcher, as if they arent there at all.
There seems to be a batch defrost/unfreeze option, but I'm not sure if theres an easy way to re-freeze a set of apps..
Not sure if titanium backup has a PIN / password option though.. but it would be complicated for a non-tech user to figure out how to unfreeze apps in Titanium Backup..
You could try SwitchMe. It basically reboots the tablet when you switch users. Each user can have their own apps, etc.
App lock could be worth a look.
Freezing in titanium is my solution and works great for that purpose unless she's an android nerd and you pissed her off enough for her to install titanium and thaw out your frozen apps.
