Today at Sprint store I played the same YouTube video on the Hero and the Pre side by side. The Pre looked great, the Hero had a very low frame rate and poor resolution. I hope someone can tell me something was wrong with the Hero and it is not always like this.
I am seriously considering buying a Hero and have been spending a lot of time at my local Sprint story getting to know it. Today I was trying out flash video on many sites and they all looked bad like I described above. I just assumed the videos had a poor source until I tried a YouTube video on the Pre. It is hard to believe all the reviews I have been seeing of the Hero wouldn't have hammered it for this if it were a common problem.
maybe the reviews didn't hammer it since at the time the choice was 'average flash performance' vs 'no flash at all'... I always watch youtube vids in the You Tube app which plays them smooth as silk, even in HD (with the occasional flutter)
If the need for smooth Flash animations takes precedence over the 1001 other unbelievably high quality aspects of the HTC Hero, then you should probably just buy a Pre like all the other dorks...
The quality of the video on the actual YouTube app is way superior to that you will get going onto the main site via the browser and the HTC Flash player.
Regards,
Dave
I'm not sure if the YouTube app chooses the video quality for you or not based on your connection. But, if the video starts off on low quality, just hit the menu button, choose "more" on the pop-up menu, and then select High Quality. It's crystal clear after that.
Thanks for the replies. I will try to get back to the Sprint store today and try out the video quality options.
How do I know if the video is playing in the YouTube app or not? The video I tried played full screen. Must I navigate there from a separate app than the browser?
Erik
it is true, i did not know that. I usually watched videos through the site. Tried the youtube app on my hero and it is indeed crystal clear. Cool

It is a physically separate app from which you can search/view Youtube videos. It came preloaded on my GSM Hero, so I assume it's still on the Sprint Hero.
If you go to Youtube via the browser, it launches the HTC Flash Player when you try to view a video, and this is quite poor! Thinking about it, I think on the G1 if you were on YouTube in a browser, it would launch any videos via the Youtube app (since it doesn't have a flash player).
Regards,
Dave
It seems the phone should be smart enough to know you are loading YouTube videos and load the YouTube player instead of the HTC Flash Player.

I think the "idea" is that if you have flash, you don't need the YouTube app. Sadly, it's a bad idea!

exactly what I do and the quality is awesome, suck that the app wont allow you to choose HD for all videos.
Good advice in this thread and I would like too add I do not miss it Pre one bit. That device has some serious flaws not likely to be addressed for another year. Namely its weak SDK, lack of deep system / hardware access and lack of GPU support. The Pre can't use its own hardware properly much less the lack of options in all of the OS.

Wait, are you saying you have to do tell it to play high quality every time? That would suck indeed, and would be a serious oversight in functionality.

Yes you do unless on WiFi. Then I think it automatically goes into high quality mode
Pre vs and youtube
I stoped by a Bell to try a Pre and compared it to my HTC touch on same Bell network, yes picture was great on Pre but it was slow, in fact I gave up waiting for it to load some video as my touch was playing them in half the time. Today at work we had my touch on bell a Touch 2 Pro on Telus and a iPhone on rogers, all playing the same video from You Tube and nothing compared to the touch pro 2 for quality video was HD looking and played without jumping, the IPhone 3gs crashed tohe sound quit working we had to restart it, and it then worked but picture of video was not full screen as the other two had. Big differance was the way they handled buffering the IPhone buffered all at first then played non-stop the other two would play a few seconds then buffer for up to 2 minutes play a few seconds then again buffer. I then played my IPod Touch same video but wifi, again video did not fit all the screen but no buffering and no digitaizing. So all in all a big disapointment with all three networks and their ability to play streaming HD video!
I was at the Sprint store again today and tried to enable high quality, but could never find the setting. I pressed the menu button over and over again while the video was playing, but it never did anything. Also, I intentionally loaded a video via the YouTube App and the quality was still bad. Furthermore I rebooted the device to be sure it wasn't just loaded down with running programs.
Weird
With the video on you press menu > more > watch high quality.
That's what I did. I pushed the menu button next to the trackball and nothing happened. No menu appeared. I also pushed every other button and the touched the screen.
So I want some videos on my X10. I used ones I already had on my PC (MP4's) and put them on my phone. The quality is fine, some need to be made bigger as they have black areas on the sides. The problem is, there is lag. I'm talking about a second behing on music videos etc. I have tried about 4 conversion softwares now and they all produce the same results, some better than others however. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I have used Mobiola to convert my videos and they paly well on the X10.
You need to create a special profile for screen resolution and save it.
you just need to double tap the screen to full size the video and get rid of those black borders
Forget the conversion apps and just get the divx app.. Works fine without the hassle of converting!!
Hope it helps!!

Simr, I have the exact same problem and I can't seem to fix it regardless of what conversion program I use. I've read on other forums that other phones using the snapdragon proc are having the same prob. What's weird is that not everyone seems to be having the same issue. My temp fix has been to use the Rock divx player. Divx stuff plays in sync so I convert other formats to divx. Hopefully a firmware update will fix this.

Guys, i have an early beta version of player, which plays .avi, .mkv and other popular formats without any conversion, just uploaded 1.4gb avi movie from my pc, and it plays flawless, ~25fps. Does someone want to try it out ?

umm, when the file is playing, i just tap the screen twice - like how you would double click the mouse on your computer to open stuff
i was also going to suggest that maybe your video files are originally laggy before you put them on your x10 but according to adamupnorth, it sounds like a different issue, very strange...

this is because android 1.6 does not support hardware acceleration in the x10 ,2.1 will bring better video playback ,it will be 720p playback
I got an HDMI cable for my tablet, and I hooked it up to my monitor. My monitor does 1080p, but I can't seem to get the tablet to change from its native resolution.
It's alright as-is, but it looks poor, as it's all stretched(and hides the menu bar at the bottom), does anyone know how to change the res on it when HDMI is connected? I'm not too worried about losing the display on the unit, I'd just start up a movie and plug it in and watch.
Currently we are limited to 720p output, 1080p is promised in a futute update (June I believe).
Ah, okay.
Is there any way to change the resolution, though? I'd like it to run at the tablets native resolution(and not chop off the menu bar) if possible. Hard to read notifications when you get an e-mail or something when it's not there.

No, you'd need a 16:10 monitor to do that. Your monitor is 16:9, while your tablet is 16:10

I've got another screen that's 1680x1050 natively, does the same thing still.
My other complaint is that video output through HDMI is quite choppy and not quite sure what the cause is. My Atrix plays video through HDMI flawlessly. Any reasons as to why that may be?
I've got a similar issue with my 32" lg and my asus transformer, is there an app to "resize" the hdmi output ?
can't understand why but while handling hdmi connection my LG TV won't let me resize the image
Anyone find a solution? I just connected mine to my TV and its cutting off the edges and seems like it has a slight lag.
hdmi out perfect
I have used the HDMI out several times to both our Sanyo and Samsung LCD TVs.they scan and auto set tobthe correct resolution.
Watching movies to there work awesome butbsuck batter dead super quick.if hounding not plug your tablet in while watching on big screen it will be jerky and unreliable. Well it is for me anyway.
If im wrong sorry.
On my 40" Bravia, I can tweak the screen so that everything is visible. I haven't noticed any choppiness playing 720p... Haven't attempted anything 1080p yet. I'm using the Lightspeed rom with Richard's kernel, and I use Aimersoft Video Converter for my video files. Aimersoft has an Acer A500 profile that makes videos play flawlessly.

Can you see the menu bar at the bottom?
The menu bar is hidden from the TV screen always.
Yeah I can't see the menu bar, but I'm using the Xoom bluetooth keyboard which has the back, home and menu keys on it.
Guys the hdmi output is 1080p....(if you are on 4.010.40 or some simillar build..)....if you play a 1080p video...the resolution automatically changes from 720p to 1080p...

I'm not sure about the shortcuts on a standard keyboard. Why don't you play around with it and see if there are any? Then report back and let us know what they are

Is there a way for the transformer to play 1080p without stuttering? I know the hardware is pretty capable yet how come it cant even play 1080p without stuttering? The blackberry playbook plays 1080p flawlessly.
Click on the search box, type in flash video and read any of the dozens of threads on the subject.
If you would like short answers though - No and because it's a new OS with unoptimized software for the hardware in question which MAY eventually be up to the task of playing 1080p.
Also... you know there aren't that many dots on your screen right?

Hi
I have been on here a few times complaining about flash performance. Through the You Tube Application I did manage to stream both the Lord of the Rings and Batman Dark Knight trailers at 1080p with smooth performance. Looks brilliant.
Through the web browser I cant even stream 720p. Somtimes the You tube application struggles and buffers even with my 30 mb connection. Wonder if this is somthing to do with the network speed rather than it being the hardware and if somthing is off slightly be it with your wireless connection speed or the you tube network it falls over?

Adobe has this in their flash player 10.3 description, this should answer your question.
"For optimal performance and the most immersive experience on Android 3.1 tablets, view Flash Player delivered content in full screen by using the menu buttons provided by content providers, or by tapping content once followed by a long tap to bring down a button in the upper left corner which can be tapped to enable full screen mode."
What don't I know about this?
I just played several 1080p HD vids on my TF without stuttering...no problem.
Does the status bar disappear when you view a movie ? I like to have full 1280 x 800 resolution without the annoying status bar. I hope that it only shows when you tab on the movie and disappear when in playing mode.
Yes. The bar fades away to black, with the buttons reducing to very dimly lit dots.

I would use Samsung's media hub, if it ever worked for me (I have NEVER had media hub work, on every Samsung device I have ever owned). But even then, there's no guarantee they'll have a big enough selection or that they'll have what you're looking for.
No wonder people just do a Google search for whatever they're looking for, and then just get it from whoever has it, legal or not...

my understanding is that media hub only works on NA versions of the tab (tmobile, att) i have the original tab and when i flashed the european rom to enable calls i media hub would no longer work. I know we can get movies via the market with the 7.7 but only as rentals.

Depends on the aspect ratio of the video. Most will be letterboxed if you want to see the full picture. Most all video players have zoom options that will fill the screen, but then that will tend to cut off parts of the sides of most videos.
One option, if you don't want to be a pirate, is to convert DVDs using Handbrake, then upload them to your tab however you like uploading files.
ok i think i will try itunes to porchuse my content as it seems thats the only legal way to do so. my question to you guys that already play movies on the tab, what should i be looking for? any size restrictions? formart restrictions? it seems i can only get the standard version of the movie, as it states that in order to get the hd version my pc has to be windows 7 and have HDCP components, :-(
Back to the original question, No the status bar does not go away when watching videos. As Jade Eyed Wolf said it fades to black so as not to take your eye away from the image but it still takes up screen resolution and your videos get resized accordingly. I think this is a limitation of honeycomb and in ics hopefully it will completely disappear during full screen events like video watching. I have read online somewhere that a hide status bar apk might work but i am not exactly sure how.

There's still a blank space in full-screen mode on ICS on my OG 7". Rather than the faint dots, it's just full black. Again, I think with the aspect ratio of these things there's going to be deadspace in most videos anyway unless you zoom and crop.
Wish it can do full screen so at least screen aging becomes uniform

For normal videos yes but i still wish it was an option, things like older 4:3 videos get shrunk by the bottom bar and full screen activities like games and book reading loses space becuase of it too.
edit: just found Hide Bar it requires root so i haven't tried it yet. Also different bar hider app in market ,third bar hider
I have no idea if these things work with touchwiz at all. Try at your own risk.

You should have no issues with being able to playback full HD content where you can get it, even with very high bitrates of 9mbit/sec and such. Fortunately, the 7.7 is very good at being able to playback lot's of different formats, not least of which include DivX, h.264, VC1, MP4, etc. It's also very robust in terms of what containers you have them in too, so .avi, .mkv, .m4v, and a bunch of others should play fine. I think even .wmv works too.
Your only size restriction is the fact that only FAT32 is natively supported for the external storage, so that limits you to a 4GB file size. I know that there are some tricks to being able to mount NTFS external storage, but it's a bit of a hassle, and requires root.
