o2 locked vs unlocked difference? - Streak 5 General

im on o2 simplicity and thinking of buying streak locked to o2 handset.
is there any disadvantage of still having in locked to o2 in terms of cooking and new roms or anything else.
is the only disadvantage that i wont be able to put another companies sim in?
thanks

You CAN use any sim you like but you have to buy the rebel sim to unlock it, it costs £10 or around $12-$15

It shouldn't have any affect at all on cooking new custom ROMs (because O2 haven't used any branded firmwares, thank god) the only downside is you'll be locked to O2 for a year, until they release the unlock codes, or, use a Rebel Sim as kanej suggested

(ask) exec unlocker

hi...i'm looking to buy o2 exec on contract and i heard that we can unlock the phone in the chinatown is it right? and can you tell me where the exact location in the china town...the name of the shop or road??
Err... several questions here:
- Which Chinatown in which city?
- Where did you hear that someone can unlock it?
- Who told you it needs unlocking?

Are you saying that universals don't need to be unlocked?

My O2 Exec is unlocked. Lots of other people in these forums have bought O2 Execs that are unlocked. The original poster wants to buy an O2 Exec. There's a chance that it may be unlocked when he buys it, although there are also rumours that recent O2 Execs are now locked.
I'm saying nothing about Universals in general.
Note: The locked/unlocked status of the O2 Exec is not necessarily the same as JasJar, Dopod, M5000 etc. The lock status depends on the phone service provider.
I bought my xda exec from o2 online store and it is unlocked, same for my brothers, but my mate bought his from theO2 store and that is locked,
Also from what people have been saying the Orange branded spv M5000 is locked, dont know if theres any truth in that,
unlocked
N2H u buy the contract exec and its unlocked??
unlocker
I would like to know if in case the exec is locked can we unlocked the exec by changing the rom??
hi free_10w
I bought my xda when they 1st came out as soon as o2 had put it on its website I bought it for £233.00 for the device plus my monthly contract, the device came unlocked I had it exchanged because I done sumthing to it and again the device o2 online store customer services sent out was unlocked, then my brother bought his from o2 website and it was unlocked but when my mate and others bought theres from the store the devices were locked, the o2 online store must get a different batch then the rest of o2 because they have there own customer service team and way of doing things so if you have a normal contract they won't assist you, you have to call general customer services same with me when I first called customer services they told me i had to call the online account management team,
also with buzz's ROM unlocker will not sim unlock the device it will just allow you to edit what's in the ROM, and if you were to just change the ROM to jasjars it will still be sim locked,
I'm hoping one of the guys can get a simunlocking tool for the locked universals I'm getting oranges m5000 in a few weeks to sell but I know that it will be locked!!

Both that I have got from O2 (1 from a shop, and 1 online) were not sim locked. They may well lock them in the future though.

I thought mine was SIM unlocked. Heck everything seems unlocked and I got it from the O2 e store. Any quick way to tell if I'm SIM locked? :?
Put in a non-o2 sim and see if you can connect to the network. If so, you are unlocked and ready to rock.
If not, your device is locked and you'll need the tools from this site to sort that out

O2 supply all Contract phones unlocked now, think they realised there was no point in locking the phones as you are tied into a 12-18month contract anyway

Hello Tattoo community! Need urgent advice to potential buyer :)

Hello,
Probably will buy this device tomorrow, used, dont sure ifs its unbranded or Vodafone (Portugal) branded.
I have a question ...
- If it's unbranded (and so on unlocked), there's anything I need to know (something in the firmware), so I can install "anything" I want?
- If its branded and sim locked... it's easy to unbrand and unlock? Should I take a look of something on the firmware?
Really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Tiago
There is no good way yet to unlock the htc tattoo locked to orange uk except from using the ismart sim 2008. Besides the simlock problem, you have a smaller screen than other android devices. So some apps or games might not work properly.. but most of them do. Also you have limited access to the market, that is, you can access products that have been specified htc tattoo compliant only unless you root the device and install the cracked market app. Besides that everything is ok.

I never said it's tattoo orange uk... I said maybe its vodafone portugal tattoo...
smaller screen? what's the normal screen for tattoo ?
he ment its small screen, compared to other HTC phones, most phones got 3+ inches screen, tattoo is 2.8.
about unlocking - its ur rights to try put ur sim card in the phone before u buy it. Myn was unlocked, thought they sayd its locked to they network. At same time - they use same phones for selling as locked to they network with a contract, as same phones for selling it for full price...

I dont want to count with simcard... always had problems with it.
So its not easily possible to unlock and unbrand a tattoo ?
Dude, if I had the chance I would have bought a device which is easily upgradeable to another Android OS or other ROMS (maybe with different OS').
But returning to your issue:
Unbranding shouldn't be a problem (I removed Vodafone Germany branding), but with unlocking there are problems with certain providers. Just put your SIM in first and see if it boots, otherwise I would take another device if the tattoo should be locked.

But if I put my TMN sim card on Vodafone Tattoo, it's suppose to work ?
Not understood what you explained, sorry.
Some carriers sell phones that are locked to them, others sell unlocked phones.
Here in the UK for instance, vodafone phones are not locked and an HTC Tattoo bought from them can be used with any SIM. Ones sold by Orange are locked to them and can only be used with an Orange SIM.
I do not know if Vodafone in Portugal lock their phones or not, the simple way of checking is by trying your non vodafone SIM and seeing if it works.
Unlocking the Tattoo can be done but costs $15 or so I believe (although with the Desire they then charge you another $20 - a very dodgy practice), far better to buy one that's not locked in the first place unless you want to use it on the carrier it's locked to.
You posted a couple of days ago - have you already bought the phone? Was it unlocked? Or have you not bought it yet?

Now I understood.
Here in Portugal, ALL phones are SIM Locked. Unlock goes from 50$ to 150$.
That's why I asked if it's easy to do it by us.
HTCCode.com say on the front page that it costs $15 but people in the Desire forum are saying they are being told that their device costs more - but only after they've paid the $15.

Unlocking the Samsung Galaxy S I9000

This thread had to appear at somepoint.
I will soon have a phone from A1 Austria, so..
Anyone had success unlocking the phone already?
There are unlocking code sites, but not one of them offers a straight code for A1 of Austria for example. I guess you could get a code for unlocking a T-Mobile or Orange phone.

you can just pay the operator a fee to unlock, otherwise it has to be rooted first.
Got mine on Monday, from Vodafone and popped my old orange sim in while waiting for my number to port and it worked so the 16gb from Vodafone is unlocked or I got extremely lucky

Yea, some of them have never been locked by the operator. But the rest of them have.
For example Saunalahti here in Finland doesn't lock their HTC phones. They say it saves them money.

Mine's the same, so unless Lamatrast got it from the Reading Oracle Vodafone shop and they randomly had a batch of unlocked ones, Voda don't seem to be branding or locking them at all. Have tested with Voda, T-Mob and O2 sims and they all work fine.
Hiya
Is buying an unlock code the only way to unlock the phone? Or is there a more reliable way? Even if it's more complicated
Hey its not just Vodafone
Got my new Galaxy S from Orange, FREE on a £15 a month contract, (think they messed up). Tried to get a code to unlock it, and the guy said the "number" wasn't in their database.
Saw this thread, and thought hey what the hell, tried my 3 card in it and it's not locked either! strange thing is though, it has the specific orange apps (including Orange Maps) pre-loaded.
There is a GOD after all.
Just bought a brand new virgin contract card off ebay and put my orange sim in it, its not locked either, nice surprise Now to compare it to my desire!
keeping my fingers crossed for the Bell Vibrant (SGS i9000 850), hoping it is unlocked out of the box
so Bell's Samsung Galaxy S is not unlocked. Does anyone know how I can get it unlocked?
thanks.
via turbo sim / isim and other alikes, until some one can complete the software unlock
What would be the turbo sim / isim?
What about those apps on the market, like Galaxy_S Unlock?
I have to admit I am a little skeptic about them, but they have decent reviews and I am a noobie, so...
Just install and run Galaxy_S Unlock from the market. Worked for me on Gingerbread 2.3.4 and 3UK. I can use any sim now.

Streak sim unlock?

Hi guys just a bit of advice needed...
I have a o2 streak, but i want to use it on my other networks, should i wait a while for an unlock solution cos apparently the rebel sim doesnt work??
I just want to check if anyone even knows if unlocking the device is even possible? will we ever have it unlocked? And more to the point is anyone even trying to unlock it?
well, straight from the horses mouth...ie o2 is that they wont unlock a contracted phone for a 12month stint and a bought outright one (3 months) - ive just got mine from a guy that bought his outright (start of june) and got told he cant have a code til the start of sept - im currently going down another route to get the code from "a bloke i know..."
So it really depends on how you bought yours....
I bought a dell streak on ebay, And i am using an o2 payg sim in it, that i have had since dec 2009,i have applied for an unlock code from o2 by filling in there online form,as i have purchased the streak outright ,will i get it unlocked as stated in above thread, thanks.
Pretty slim my friend. If its a contract one youve got no chance - they wont unlock it for a year (i think thats already been said). Ive got a few irons in the fire at the moment, ill let you know what happens with mine once ive got my code (hopefully)

It actually means either
1. get a pay as you go o2 SIM
2. get an o2 compatible SIM
3. Get a rebel SIM
4. Pray for an unlock code
I did 3 and am currently doing a lot of 4 ;-)
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
we have a chance to come out code?
I believe that O2's position with the unlocking of SIM-free and pre-pay Streaks isn't actually legit.
Ofcom's guidelines are that O2 can only refuse to unlock the phone until they've recovered any subsidy offered on the phone - in the case of the SIM-free and and pre-pay versions that amounts to £0 and £30 respectively against the cost direct from Dell.
I would call O2 customer service and ask for the unlock code (they can ask for a reasonable fee for this). If they refuse tell them that you'll be reporting them to Ofcom and open a complaint with Ofcom (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/) if enough people do it I suspect they'll relent and do what they're legally obliged to do.
As far as the contract Streaks are concerned, they are within their rights to refuse to unlock for 12 months, but as they're getting their pound of flesh through contract payments whatever happens to the phone I can't see their justifcation for refusing...
Hope this helps...

O2 will not be unlocking Streaks for the forseeable future, that is fact whether you have filled in a form or spoke to a CSA who says thet they can do it....it will not happen

Hi
I have the dell streak, and am on vodafone UK ,i just received the rebelsim card 2 yesterday and put it in my streak, seems to be working fine with my vodafone sim,i am on a vodafone contract, all i did was put my vodafone sim card in an old nokia ,that does not have 3g,to get signal, and then put it in my streak with rebel sim and vodafone sim card ,seems to be working great, if you buy the rebel sim for the dell streak just now, they are giving you a free case for it,and a free screen protector, and if you enter the code "Rebel" during checkout you get an extra 5 percent off the total price,i paid £14.50 including postage in the uk the free case is quite cheap made, but for free,it will do until i find a better one i was a bit wary about getting the rebel sim at first, but now i am using it with vodafone uk and it works fine,so go for it

HI
Yes you get 3g but sometimes you can lose signal/service/just put it back to 2g in the streak, and it comes back no problem,i can receive texts and calls no problem give it a try, you have to keep data roaming on as well to get the 3g i think, something to do with the way the rebel sim unlocks the streak
Do you have to put the sim back into a 2G phone and then back in the streak. Or can you just set the Streak to 2G and then back to 3G?
Somehow vodafone 3g can work on Dell Streak with rebel sim. Im on 3 and no 3g with rebel sim. I dont want to stay with O2 so hence the sale of my Dell Streak, waiting for the unlocked one price go lower so I can afford one
