Whats so fancy about droidx? Friends talk it up over evo but still have not seen or tried their phone..

Meh...the difference is no custom ROM's or bootloader access on the Droid X.
~Jasecloud4
Nothing. Evo takes DroidX by pure usability alone.

So what u are saying is what you bought is all you get unlike evo? I like the fact you can root and get custom roms for evo.. it does beat our phone in video quality though.. Stopped at verizon after posted this and they are out so cant test for myself.. Went to youtube and they had a good benchtest for evo droidx and nexus 1.. Thanks for the response..
sent from my Evo
Yeah...the Droid X has this nifty feature called an EFUSE that automatically "bricks" the phone once it detects modification (to put it simply). Go over to the Droid X forum and notice how they don't have any custom ROM's listed.
The EVO has new ROM's and updates being posted every day.
~Jasecloud4
I dont know what I would be doing without this forum and everyone on here... Def not getting droidx now.. Thanks.. Im just glad when I got my tp2 I found this site.. thanks again for responses

Look up on youtube on the benchtest. I did droid x for search.. Im not sure if he uses 2.1 or what for bench for the evo but gets a 419 and but ran test on my froyo and got 1166 on quadrant? To me thats a big difference since he is trying to compare 3 devices.. Im stock 2.2 so how did the evo get suck low number.. Also I got in double digits on the graphic test on it and on the video I dont think it even got past 9fps? Any ideas or just trying to make droidx better?
sent from my Evo
Droid X came out before public availability of FroYo on the Evo so that's why the scores are low...when the Droid X gets froyo it'll outperform the Evo again.
Also its already been publicly stated by motorola that the efuse technology in the X doesn't brick the phone just prevents it from booting until a released software build is reinstalled.

My girlfriend just picked up the Droid X. Hardware-wise, I think it feels much nicer than the Evo. It feels a lot lighter and looks thinner because of the way it's shaped.
I'd still keep my custom ROMs though...
The evo needs root and custom roms IMO because its performance out of the box was terrible.
Droid X less so. However, digitally signed boot loader means I wouldn't touch it regardless.
Droid is nice phone but its antiquated already.... Are we forgetting that small tiny little fact that we have a front facing camera and WIMAX???? It might not be the best 4g signal but it still ahead of the game.. All the Droid X people will have to upgrade hardware once VZ goes LTE.. We will just need to updated WIMAX RADIO...lol

I forgot the only difference between WiMax and LTE is the band frequency which means we could enjoy all that 20>mb/s down goodness someday .
I tried the droid x at a local verizon a week or two ago; didn't impress me at all. Aesthetically, it looked like a kirf. Software wise, it was pretty ugly. I guess that may have been due to the store employee's setup, but it had this awkward green theme with the red eye that looked pretty nasty. Motoblur itself didn't really stand above AOSP imo; it was just kinda "there". Then again, the phone could be "alot" nicer with launcher pro and beautiful widgets.
But what wins it for me is , as xavier said, is the fact that the X is already outdated. Even though our phone might not be ''as" fast (do quadrant and linnpack scores absolutely translate to a better phone?), at least we have some features that will allow us to keep up with the phones released until it's time for our upgrade. I'd sacrifice the performance gain over long-term usability+peace of mind+convenience any time.

Thanks for these posts. I had heard that Sprint was probably going to be entering the LTE market and was wondering if the Evo would be able to take advantage of that technology.

LTE is not gsm. LTE is LTE. They are different. LTE can work on phones that have gsm or cdma radios.
EDIT: To further clarify things...GSM is only compatible with LTE technologies while CDMA is compatible with LTE and WIMAX

did you guys see the benchmark on linpack on the driod 2 runniing froyo.. scored like a 12 or something

Ugh. The Droid X is sooooooooooooooo ugly. And soooooo choppy with motoblur.
Also, don't put any stock in quadrant. The I/O portion of that benchmark is so flawed. Cyanogen was able to score 3000+ on it by exploiting the very same aspect of quadrant that gives the Droid X a high score. Yes, the X does better in 3D graphics, but that doesn't make up for everything else that's wrong with it.
I'd pick the EVO any day over the X.
the physical buttons are retarded.

Gota love that GPU.
It is nuts how bad the EVO tested. It would be interesting if they included the Incredible.
So.. I was pretty sure about wanting this... but some are saying to wait a month or two...... what is your guy's consensus on the subject?

Always wait a couple months and they'll be something better.
true... I just suppose if it something like front facing camera or some other feature I would never use is worth the wait for some.. I might as well just bite the bullet I think...
Ok, so as far as processors and GPUs go, do I have this right?
Samsung Galaxy S/iPhone4 > Droid X/2 > Evo/Incredible/HD2
Droid X is at least on par with iPhone 4 from what I've seen. Hard to compare the two since they run on a different OS.

I think we need to look at features that are actaul PHONE features.. not just which has more apps or a higher resolution.... which is actually better faster at making phone calls and has more capabilities that involve phone activities...
Sure they are much more than phones.. but we live in an advanced day now and we should not have to worry about how we hold a phone to get reception n things of such...
I myself think the PHONE parts ot the iphone suck, however I do think it is a cool device in some instances, so I bought an ipod touch and jailbroke it just for fun...
Hmmm.. the X is so tempting!!!
After I saw this video I became confused. So, the Nexus One is outdated for now? Is it worth buying the Nexus One now?

"This is about as good as we have right now. You can actually see how the Snapdragon, Hummingbird and OMAP all compare.
Obviously the Nexus one, Desire and Incredible are snapdragon, the Galaxy(jEPIC, Captivate, Vibrant and Verizons version) is the Hummingbird and the Droid Shadow(Droid X) is the OMAP and they are all clocked at 1 GHz.

I will have a droid x tomorrow as it was a replacement. In the mean time I bought a vibrant. I love the V but I also love the X!
I know this is X forum but I also posted this in the V forums to see if anyone there had to make a choice like mine!
If you had to choose, which one and why? WHY did you choose the X?
i was going to go with a droid x but the 2 year contract is killing me.........so i was looking for gsm phones and stumbled upon the galaxy s i9000 (international version) and the t mobile vibrant...... don't get me wrong the droid x is great... but imo i prefer a gsm phone with rich features such as samsung phones...

Rich features of the Samsung phones? The GSM versions of the Galaxy S don't even have a camera flash. I think you need to look at what's best for you and fits your needs CDMA or GSGSM and feature sets your looking for. I personally have been surprised and impressed with the Droid X.

I like the S-AMOLED screen on my Captivate for the most part. I do NOT like that its a pentile matrix. But the colors are very good on it.
I was in a toss up over this phone or the Droid X. I thought the screen on the DX was pretty good too, seeing as it is a LCD with full resolution, so its going to be crisper and sharper. But Moto drove me off with the whole e-fuse crap.
If your even trying to compare the two it doesn't seem like it would add up to switch.
Both are awesome android phones. If you like 'a little' weight the X seems prefect. Honestly the screen is enough to not even consider anything else until something better appears better then the galaxy s line.
So what if it doesn't have flash? Most phones take horrible camera shots in night. Buy a point and shoot if you want a camera.
Wait until CM6 is on your S it will be better than anything for a while.

Here's what I posted in the vibrant forum for those that care...
Finally decided to go with the droid x.
The V has a nice screen and all but having BOTH phones on hand and messing with them the x just wins, for ME.
The 4.3 which looks like a true landscape screen is just awesome to me.
I also tried a game called raging thunder 2 and the X kicked the V's butt.
With the V it is VERY VERY hard to control the car, no matter how much I adjust the steering settings. Maybe the game needs to be updated to the v's processor, I dont know.
With the X the steering was amazing, and so much more FUN to play that game and others. I will say this, the V has a much better smoooothness in schrolling around the phone than the X. I also LOVE the camera flash on the X, takes great pics in the dead darkness.
Thanks for playing guys!
I am actually returning my Vibrant and getting a Droid X. I loved my Vibrant, the screen is the best of any phone I have ever seen and almost alone that made me keep it but T-Mobile's coverage sucks. Yes when you are on 3G in an HSPA+ market it is lightening fast but you lose 3G all over the place. I live in Houston and have lost 3G all over the city even when outside. I had Sprint before all of this and never realized how good their 3G coverage was until I tried T-Mobile.
I would have waited for the Fascinate but I have ultimately realized that the Droid X is superior to the Galaxy in every way except the screen. So will take the Droid X and maybe in the Spring there will be a 4G Samsung with a Super AMOLED phone on Verizon that can replace it.

The Galaxy's GPU is better. Also, the Galaxy has a 16gb version while the Droid x only has 8gb. Nothing major though.
I have the galaxy s (international version) only because I was able to purchase it before the Droid X came out. I was able to try the Droid x at my local wal-mart and I would be happy with either one.

Sorry, I meant to say superior in every way for my purposes. Yes the GPU is better but I am not getting my phone for games. I am sure there are many that would get more out of the Vibrant or Galaxy.

Download android sensor data. Open it. Then run that game again.. some reason the accelerometer is buggy bit if you run that it smooths it out.. and the 6 axis motion sensor is sweet...
The vibrant may have 16gb of internal memory but correct me if im wrong only 2gigs of that is for apps. Im pretty sure its that way with the other galaxy s phones and te droid x all 8gb is partitioned for apps.

and ultimately... the choice is really up to you. pick up the x and test it for <30 days.. then wait a couple of weeks and test the fascinate. however, once the 2.2 update hits the x (and droid1 and incredible at the same time..) the decision should be a bit easier =P

Really ya wont go wrong with either choice...
All the reviews are making me nervous... thank god for a return policy.
Give me a chance to root and see if I can remove all this bloatware, bing crap.
Such a pretty device too....
ya no kidding huh?
I ordered a droid x almost 2 weeks ago and have been mulling over switching to the fascinate ever since. Apparently now I'll have to wait to receive my droid x and then bring it in and return it for the fascinate. Good thing it's coming tomorrow(they told me it would ship on the 13th).
I have no idea what to do. The fascinate looks great as far as specs go. It really just depends on how the custom roms are going to run on it, because there's no way I'm sticking with bing search and maps... EVERYONE has said it but it's just retarded!
Soo... the DX's bootloader is still locked. The Fascinate is "supposedly" completely unlocked. The DX is supposed to be getting Froyo anyday now right? And who knows when the Fascinate will get it... sometime this year huh?
I'm so tired of this stinky old Touch Pro 2 that I can't even check my twitter on anymore! I'm definately leaning towards trying the Fascinate. And I will DEFINATELY be rooting/hacking/overclocking to the fullest of it's capabilities. Sorry for going on.. I've had smartphones on my brain for the last week. At least most of ya'll understand what I'm going through.
Just one week? I have been thinking about Fascinate for months (ever since it was announced)
I knew Bing would be default search engine but I never thought it would be the only search engine.
Here I was, getting a bit antsy thinking Google might turn evil after the net neutrality deal, but MS is still the evil lord of technology.
First of all, the reviews (Gizmodo/Engadget/Droid Life) that were written about the Fascinate were all awful. Not a single one of them did the phone any justice, nor did they cover anything except how much they hated the fact that Bing was the only search engine and that TouchWiz has a lag issues and other problems. They never said anything about the hardware being superior to any other device vzw offers. There is no doubt that TouchWiz needs improving and that having only Bing is stupid. However this phone is awesome. The cpu/gpu/screen are all much better than the Droid X and the Droid 2 and the Droid Incredible. Once this thing is rooted and the ROMs start coming, it will be the king.

I'm pretty sure you were trolling though.
Actually I wasn't. What you pasted is literally about all they wrote. They seem like they are trying to prove a point that they hate what they did with Bing, so you shouldn't buy the phone. I think Gizmodo went as far as saying if you want a Galaxy S phone you should switch carriers...
I just think the reviews were all terribly ignorant, and not really fair compared to some of the other reviews i've seen them do. I don't even know how you can compare this phone to a Droid Incredible at this point, it's far superior in every category with the exception that Sense UI is likely a bit better than TouchWiz.
This is one of my favorites:
"Camera: This actually started out in the “Good” section and as I continued through the review, it had to be moved. 5MP? Really? The picture quality of shots taken with the camera aren’t bad at all, but with the Incredible and Droid X both sporting 8MP beasts, you’ve got to come strong."
This guy is clearly clueless, and what he says makes no sense at all.

lol, what a joke.
It's not trolling to say that the reviews aren't good. If he was trolling it would make more sense for him to be mocking the phone and saying it sucks. Instead he's saying the phone will likely be very popular even with all of the bad reviews.
Either way, imo the only good review is slash gear's b/c they gave a thorough in-depth review. Not a "lightning" review, not a quick overview, but a REAL review.
Now, let's get this back on topic.
I am not trusting any of the reviews at this point. I'll be picking up my fascinate tomorrow and I have high hopes and expectations.

lol, I'm with ya there. I just wish I didn't have to wait till after work.
I don't post here much, but I bought into the BOGO fascinate deal yesterday. I have been a WM nerd for years and was waiting for some decent WP7 devices before I upgraded from my TP2. I'm stuck on verizon, and it looks like there are no noteworthy WP7 launch devices. I also work for verizon, so I get an upgrade every 10 months. Figured I'd take a chance withandroid for the next 10 months to try the whole shebang.
Being a geek, I took one look at the specs and was impressed.
First: This is XDA. What does all this bing/touchwiz nonsense mean to us? The FIRST thing I do with any smartphone I get is root! Aren't the CNET/Amazon review boards for the people who can't get over these tiny carrier-specific idiosyncracies?
I keep reading the reviews as well--and most importantly the reviews in the user-submitted sections. The phone is getting absolutely flamed by people who don't even own it yet feel the need to rank it at a "1" on all levels because of Bing. Seriously?
I'm not worried about a thing. Once this phone is rooted, and I'm sure it won't take long, it's going to be a beast.
I got my fascinate this morning and it is a thing of beauty.
Unfortunately, I can use it yet. Verizon billing system is having issues in the Midwest and cant activate me yet. Atleast that's what their telling me.
But i'm having fun moving the puzzle piece around, haven't seen the word "BING" yet.

The Fascinate felt a whole lot snappier and smooth to me vs the DROID X/2. I'm having a tough time deciding which to go with.

They both seem like good contenders, but personally I am going for the within(galaxy II) unless sprint decides to put a keyboard on it. The sammys cameras have always been on the top list, and watching some vids on the sgs2, the phone destroys all other benchmarks. This video shows a side by side comparison with the 3d, and the sammy seems to win in every category. Motorola has big shoes to fill...
http://pocketnow.com/android/htc-evo...laxy-s-2-video
Photon has a photo button and kickstands and higher resolution. And we don't know the sg2 is faster, it has not been tested against the photon. There is rumored to be a Tegra 2 version on the sg2 out there and we might get that one in the us making it almost the same as the photon. Just saying
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I think you should check em both out and see which one you like more. People are acting like the sgs2 is some sort of god phone bit really all of these phones are so similarly spec'd that it really comes down to personal preference. I have the E3D and everything about it is sick. I may get an sgs2 to replace my OG EVO though as I would prefer that over the Motorola.
Tapa tapa tapa
I have had bad luck with samsung hardware
but man that photon4g is wayy to sexy
i woud go sgs2. but as said above, it REALLY depends on the processor. ofc, if it gets tegra 2, itll be the same, then its really cosmetics and stock ui... but from what ive read, the Exynos/Orion processors are MUCH faster than the competition. even at 1ghz, the exynos is supposed to be able to beat the tegra. fingers crossed.
The Photon, only because the Samsung GSII might not come in CDMA flavor (carrier blocking), from what I've read.
Otherwise, yeah the GSII.

This is what could really keeps me from considering the Photon but on the other hand, I really want the extra resolution the 3D and Photon have.
Another thing to consider is time to market with Software updates. Although the E3D, SGS2, and Photon all launch with Android 2.3 certain manufacturers are quicker and better at releasing official updates.
I for one have not seen a Samsung firmware release go as planned in over a year. Their updates seem to take forever and when they do roll out they are still buggy (The latest Froyo update to the Sprint version of the SGS was pulled twice before a proper release was done). HTC on the other hand updates first and updates often and very rarely has issues. As far as Motorola is concerned... I can't say as the Photon is the first Moto phone we will be carrying in a long time. That being said I am looking forward to the Photon but my biggest concern is SW support both official and third party.
The Photon is also launching with 2.2.......that and a locked bootloader is reason enough to not get it.
Tegra 2 is also overrated and the Adreno 220 and Exynos easily match, and even beat it in some benchmarks.
I haven't read it confirmed, but it seems likely that it will also have a Pentile display, so despite the higher resolution, it won't look as sharp, as say the screen on the EVO3D.

So it doesn't have a root yet like the 3d, ok

No the Photon is definitely launching with 2.3

It is unconfirmed as to if the boot loader will be locked, at least I have not had a reliable source confirm it. I'll see if I can corner the Motorola rep next time I see him though. If it's anything like the Atrix bootloader it shouldn't be much of an issue though. See:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/motorola-to-unlock-atrix-bootloader-in-future-update/
I am unfamiliar with the differences between a Pentile display and the one the Evo 3D uses. Can you elaborate on how it is inferior?
I'd get the SG2

Love my E3D but since this is for the photon or sgs2 then I would choose the sgs2.

i'm getting the photon. i'm sick of samsung and their lousy and untimely updates. it's between the evo3d and the photon for me, and the "3d" on the new evo really means nothing to me. motorola devices have always been high quality. i won't like the locked bootloader but sammy's record did it for me i guess. the unknown of the photon trumps samsung's terrible record.
dont base your choice SOLELY on the opinions of others. yea, use them to help you out but, when it comes down to it, it's YOUR choice...not theirs. so play around with each phone (I'm assuming you're waiting on the SGSII to land in order to do this anyway so you have the patience already lol). which ever you like better should be the one you get.

of course the photon doesn't have root yet....IT'S NOT RELEASED give it time...it will get it especially since Moto is looking to unlock the bootloader of the Atrix (dunno if it has been done yet)...they'll probably do the same with the Photon (probably not right out of the box tho)
when I was upgrading from the Hero, I went through the same thing (had to choose between OG Evo, Shift and Epic). I wanted the bigger screen so the shift was out right away. I played with both the Evo and the Epic and yea the Epic was better specs (the 1gHz Hummingbird vs 1gHz Snapdragon, Super AMOLED vs LED) but it just felt cheap to me (IMO that seems to be with A LOT of Samsung phones...i've had quite a few over the years and so did a friend of mine and they (the phones) all seemed like that). I knew the Evo had the better development community but that didn't affect my decision.
long story short, choose what YOU feel would be the better fit for YOU. test them out (also look at the Evo 3D to see what the others are talking about when it comes to the screen)

Meh. I think it looks ugly and MOTOBLUR just makes it that much more undesirable.

The locked bootloader makes it undesirable.
They unlock that and we could possibly talk.
I'm not considering it but I do like it's angular design & the kickstand.

Yeah that was something I forgot to mention.
Motorola Android phones on Verizon test well in battery life on anandtech.com. Hopefully this will be the same for their Sprint phones.
I'm probably going to save my upgrade for the next Nexus phone.

Im a former DroidX and Droid 2 owner and as far as hardware, Moto does it right. Best battery life and radios of any other phones ive had. I think Moto will follow through and unlock bootloaders later this year. So ill be getting a Photon on launch day.

Are you going to make a Rom for it once the bootloader is unlocked? Thinking about getting this phone.
I had the NS4G and really liked your rom, but had to return the phone because of the dropped calls.

I heard they had no plans on opening / unlocking the Photon ... ?

Motorola pretty much said the same thing as HTC. They will be unlocking bootloaders later this year. But, Moto also said it will be up to the carrier. Im almost certain Sprint will go with unlocked...Not to mention the Atrix has been hacked and they now have unlocked bootloaders.
Yeah, I remember hearing Moto say as much but also remember seeing, 'somewhere', that the plans didn't include the Photon even though it was a 'future' device. If I remember where, I'd hunt it down. It might not have been official but I am certain it was a Moto statement. It was a while ago ... hope it isn't the case as I know some folks are pretty interested in the device.

I had to return mine too :/ But I will get another soon. I will probably do something on the Photon, probably very basic though, i.e. debloat and maybe change a few of the awful blur/gb images lol.

Sweet, that's all I ask for
Props to the SGII (if does make it stateside) but I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised with the Photon.
Immediate pro's I see are:
- better signal (not a given but Moto's track record suggests it might be)
- dedicated camera button like the the 3D (I know you can shortcut it from the
home screen but it's note the same as a hardware button)
- kickstand since I don't use a case and love to pop it out for the kids to watch
movies while we're out to eat
- accessories (like the car dock) and provided HDMI cable
- higher resolution screen means more screenspace
- world phone for the possible yearly trip abroad
Likely con's:
- motoblur although having given up HTC Sense I've found I like stock android
better with my aged hero
- non AMOLED screen (SGII evidently rocks)
- initial locked bootloader
- older Tegra 2 when Tegra 3 is evidently due out later this year and is 5x faster
Anxious to see how it stacks up head to head in testing with the 3D since spec wise that things a beast.
Also doesn't have the newer 800MHz band that Sprint is migrating to.. other FCC passed phones starting with the EVO 3D have this. They're supposed to start the migration at the end of the year. It'll be a long process, but it should help with coverage down the road.

Stock, the Photon should beat the 3D in all benchmarks, the Atrix does. And the screen is actually very nice on these new dual core Motos. Granted, its not samoled, but still nice none the less.
It's possible it won't, but this will likely have a Pentile display too, so it won't be quite as sharp as the EVO 3D's display.
I'm excited for the phone, but i don't want to wait for and upgrade, i guess ill just have to pony up the dough (im guessing around $600?) haha
The more I see about this phone the more I like it. Looks a lot like the EVO to me. More than the 3D does. The dock option is just wicked with the tablet like interface and USB ability. My phone is mostly for business so it has some better features for me. Would be nice to have a phone with better battery life without having to rely on extended battery.
I was going to wait for the SGS2 also but by the time it hits Sprint other devices will beat the pants off it as far as speed goes. Hear quad core processors are in the works for maybe even Q4 of this year.
Still on the fence about burning my upgrade.

I agree. With quad cores possibly coming out late this year and the rumors of the Nexus Prime, really hate to get a Tegra 2 based phone. Then again, any technology buy is going to be dated the moment it's in your hands and thus as long as it does what I want it for which for me appears the Photon just might, it's probably better to get a phone sooner rather than later so that the upgrade timer becomes eligible again sooner
