[Q] Screenshot of texting in landscape mode? - Vibrant General

Anyone have a screenshot of the vibrant texting in landscape mode?
I have yet to see a real Vibrant, only dummy phones. I am used to a physical keyboard, but really want to give the Vibrant a chance. I want to see what the virtual qwerty keyboard looks like in landscape mode. I have yet to find a picture of it, everyone shows us what the swype looks like in portriat mode.

I had the same ideas about physical keyboard. Swype + 4" keyboard is REALLY simple and i prefer it over a physical keyboard (G1).

others since swype isnt for everyone
Samsung
Android
Custom HTC_ime

I wondered the same thing before I bought the phone... Swype is great
In portrait; even enough to forget physical KB by itself. All the KB in landscape are super sensitive and MT supported so its almost like having a physical KB.
Vibe the XDApp

Well right now I am on my vibrant in portrait mode and this took less than one minute to type. Oh and by the way before I got mine I went to the immobile store and they let me test it out.

Yeah I use Swype on portrait. It's really accurate and not even worth switching to landscape to do it. I've tried Swype on my G1 and it was really nice and all that but sometimes it would be difficult due to the limitations on the screen size. 4" definitely makes it a lot easier.
I had a G1 since '08 and T-Mobile let me buy the Vibrant for 2 years for $164.99 when it first came out Contract wasn't even ended haha

A couple bought ones from the Android Market
Smart Keyboard Pro
My personal favorite right after HTC_IME
Better Keyboard

ok thats it , Better keyboard is customizable (Butt load of themes both free and payed on the market) and Smart Keyboard pro has some themes built in (i was showing the iDont aka iPhone style on the pic).
Theres a bunch of options so if you dont like the ones it comes with you can always get some on the market both free and payed

Hey i would advice you also check out the droid x keyboard. Takes up a lot of keyboard real estate but it is super accurate. It also seems to be a whole lot more effective in landscape mode. No lie, on a good streak i can probably hit up to 20 words per minute. Mind you this is also the first phone without a hardware keyboard i am using. The autocorrect is also a thing of beauty.
Edit: just found out that you cannot do that with tasker. If anyone knows a workaround to allow this plz let me know.
Btw: i sent this msg from my vibrant using the droid x keyboard.
Also.immediately you get your phone replace the stock browser with dolphin hd. I feel it beats all other browsers out there. Getting a program like tasker and settiglng a rule where it switches your keyboards when screen orientaton changes would be a great idea. Swype for portrait and droid x for landscape.

I never thought I'd ever buy a smartphone without a real keyboard, but Swype really has me converted. I find it much quicker and easier to swype in portrait mode rather than landscape since the distance to travel is shorter.

I've been using better keyboard since my G1. I've tried others and still find better keyboard to be the best out of any keyboard. I love it, full multitouch support as well.

I placed my order for a new Vibrant for myself and a new white MyTouch Slide for my wife.
I will probably keep my G1 as a backup, and then get rid of my wifes original MyTouch on ebay.
Thanks for the posts. It made my choice easier. I don't know if I will be able to give up the physical keyboard or not, but if worse comes to worse I can always swap the Vibrant pretty easily for a new MyTouch Slide, right?

I took out the other keys. It's actually pretty easy to take the keys out too. Just get an exacto knife and it will slide right underneath. The keys are only held together in the center, not all around.
wow man. I must say that i'm impressed.

Ouch that sounds??? Not good...I don't think I could do that...Maybe there's a way to cover those buttons that are not in use, and also disable them
OMG dude.. i am HIGHLY IMPRESSED! Would you think about starting a service, performing this task on other phones?
How difficult/time consuming is it? If we can workout the terms, i would love to have this done to my phone? Also, how likely would it be for us to raise the keys a bit? They arent very pronounced.
I couldn't do it but it defintely works fine. Glad your happy!
@Phen0m
Originally, I wanted to create a replacement keypad. Instead of having the keyboard, you'd open up the Epic and insert the new game pad.
I suppose I could continue work on that, this way I could sell the gamepad by itself to users so they could install it themselves.
But, I don't know how many people would honestly be interested in buying that.
If my effing proxy at work would cooperate I could view it. The website is blocked, but youtube isn't...funny how that works.
that is pretty cool unfortunatly i use my keypad too much and i cant find a free copy of the full droidemu, as iv no credit card to buy off the market.

I saw this on engadget. You could have waited for the gamegrip being developed for the Epic...
@Xhyperion
The game gripper isn't for me. I was looking for more of a PSPgo type of device. I'm not a fan of add-ons and stuff that I have to carry around.
For example, as soon as the Seidio battery extender comes out, I'm picking that up. I don't want to carry around additional batteries. I'm willing to deal with a little extra bulk if it means that my phone lasts twice as long.
Even though it's not for everyone, this is now the perfect device for me.

Hey, what's your take on the keyboard skipping key presses, as discussed over here:

Obviously it looks like your keyboard is registering every press. Do you know if you had any problems before you modded it?

Who misses the old Android keyboard?

I am trying my best to like this new keyboard but can't get used to it. I used to be able to quickly type on the old one but this new one is giving me issues. Is there a learning curve or something?
Yeah, it's called Smart Keyboard Pro
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
what google did was copy the keyboard from the droid x and just made the keys much smaller, which was their single biggest mistake and which explains some inaccuracy problems that people have been having, especially those with bigger/fatter fingers.
i use keyboard pro instead because i can adjust the size of the keys through the height adjustment feature. (yeah i have big hands/fingers). you can also adjust the multitouch sensitivity on it as well.
you can also download swype as an alternative from swype's website.
They need to make the space bar longer, and remove the period key. Pressing the space bar twice takes care of the period anyway.
I actually love the new android keyboard. I find it much more accurate than the froyo one. idk maybe its just me.

I agree with the spacebar being too small so i switched to swiftkey pro. If the spacebar was bigger i would switch back

I agree. I don't have as much errors on this one and it's the closest one to the iPhone keyboard (which was my favorite). On that 3.5" screen I was able to type out long text messages in portrait mode.
I think the oversensitivity of the Nexus S screen contributes to a lot of typoes and errors as well. Ever try holding your finger just above the screen, but not actually touching it? It'll register as a press. I'm sure when fast thumbs are glazing over the keyboard while typing, it causes mis-hits and repeated hits (like tthis or thiss - something that always happens to me). Oddly enough, sometimes the complete opposite will happen, when it doesn't register hits despite knowing I've hit the key (it'll have the popup preview). This happens especially with the keyboard (resulting in ths or tis, or things likethis). All annoying.
I've always been very critical of the Android typing experience. It's one of the few sore spots of the Android experience in general. Gingerbread stock is without question better than previous iterations, but it still pales in comparison to typing on an iPhone (or even an iPod touch). Anyone who has typed extensively on one would know the difference. I'm sure it's a combination of both hardware and software that makes it so successful; I can type with utter confidence on an iPhone/iPod Touch.
I wish I could say the same for Android. I'm hoping Blindtype will be implemented soon and change all this. I'm also hoping they'll grow a brain and depart from Apple by including features like Custom Auto-Correction. Until then, alternatives help. The new "optimized for Gingerbread" Better Keyboard 8 is quite good. Smart Keyboard Pro is good too (love the Custom Auto-Correction feature).

yeah moreso the droid x then the apple one, check the pic out. i always used the droid x apk on my older android devices and i thought this new one would be the same or an improvement. i guess i thought wrong but hey that's just my opinion.
The 2.3 keyboard is just too small. Measure it to smart keyboard or swift key and you will see what I mean.
I'm using swype and love it.
I use it, I have to admit... I am still learning how to hit the keys just right. However, it is an amazing keyboard, love it.

Adding a vote for the Gingerbread keyboard too. Everytime I have to go back to the Froyo keyboard on friends' devices or my work phone, I find it much harder to type on than my Nexus S. I used to always need the haptic feedback turned on with the Froyo keyboard too, but I haven't bothered turning it on with this keyboard.
I like the gingerbread keyboard. I type a wee bit faster than I did with the froyo KB.

Any new keyboards?

I have been using the stock Honeycomb keyboard and wanted to try something better ( well I think it's the fact that the Honeycomb keyboard has similar issues that the Gingerbread keyboard suffers from as well). I am right now typing this on my Xoom using the Thumb Keyboard 4.0 beta. I have tried the Tablet Keyboard on the market but it's just too slow and there is no multitouch compared to the Honeycomb keyboard. However the Thumb Keyboard Aldo lacks multi touch. Anyone know of an underground keyboard that no one knows of that I could try? I'm open to any other keyboard than the ones I have named. Preferably I would like something like the stock keyboard, thumb keyboard is great but it has a pretty big learning curve.
Thanks
Sent from my Xoom
Unfortunately the swift key beta is private and I was lucky enough to sign up for it when I had the chance and I can say it's awesome. When it comes out I think you'll be pleased.
Here I will type with the Android keyboard right now, it works great and I love it but sometimes when I type words such as back, it will repeat the CK at the end, which getts pretty annoying. I love this keyboard because it has the ease of access of smilies, comma, apostrophe, period, and dash plus forward slash. That's why I hate thumb keyboard. It doesn't have quick access to these, so it feels like a very unnatural experience when I type.
Sent from my Xoom
I'm not trying to sway you but Thumb Keyboard has easy access to all the things you just mentioned...
I've also tried Tablet Keyboard, it's like a free version of Thumb Keyboard. It's good but, to me, not as nice as TK.

Well, it's just on the Android Stock Keyboard, you get access to all of that right there on the lower right hand corner of the keyboard, you don't need to tap onto the symbols button to access the rest. I like Android Keyboard, I enjoyed the Tablet Keyboard, but it's just so lacking in features. Are there really no more keyboards available for Android? Anyone here making one? I would be willing to beta test.
Sent from my Xoom
I think it takes some getting used to
the thumb keyboard looks good for when you are holding the xoom at the same time - so you can access all the letters with just the thumbs!
my main gripe with it was the lack of long-press-numbers from the front keyboard layout - but holding the num button and pressing a key works alright
Thumb Keyboard is by far the best keyboard for Android Tablets. As stated before...it does take a little getting used to...but once you do you can type 2x to 3x faster then with stock...atleast that is how it is for my wife and I (we each have a Xoom).
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
+1 for Thumb Keyboard. Getting so used to it I don't think I'll ever use a different layout.
Thumb KB all the way. Very customizable
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Same here re: Thumb Keyboard. I love it. Don't need to go to the symbols layout for those characters; just need to long-press the right keys.
I really wouldn't mind thumb keyboard if it also had a full regular QWERTY keyboard lay out, because sometimes I use my Xoom on my lap and it's just very fast and comfortable to type with a full keyboard.

I actually tried the Tablet Keyboard again, it works well and I would be willing to learn and get used to it but the fact is that it has no multi touch, and the biggest downside is that there ate no auto correct options. It's a great keyboard but just not worth getting the time to get used to it. So far the Android keyboard is the best one to me, and thhat is sad considering that it makes mistakes like the one I just typed, and it sometimes auto double spaces for somme reason. Honestly we need a better keyboard, I still might have hope with Swift Keyboard, it actually looks pretty good.

Thumb Keyboard! It's the best money I've spent on the Android Market so far. It takes a few minutes to get used to, and the number keys are a bit of a stretch, but other than that, it's great.
I just installed WritePad too but mostly for kicks and giggles. I don't think there's any chance that WritePad will be faster or more efficient than Thumb Keyboard.

Old and great Better Keyboard 8, unfortunately unavailable to get from the market now
Fast, reliable, I just can't use any other keyboard. On my previous phone - X8 it was just perfect.
I hate keyboards like swype or predict-like where you can't switch it off, because I'm very very VERY fast typer and I mistype very rarely so I don't need any help in entering text.
I just use the stock keyboard, i see no reason why it would need replacing
TouchPal. Looks like the iPhone keyboard but has swype and better options.
Swiftkey x. Best keyboard I've ever used on any phone EVER. Better than any other Android keyboard and certainly better than the autocorrect failure on IOS.
I use one of the "Ice Cream Sandwich" Keyboards and love it:

There is nothing for me to "appreciate". I have used it for many hours and I struggle to type as accurately and as quickly as I can using the popular android keyboards. The auto correction is absolutely atrocious and the key calibration is garbage. Zero customisability too.
I absolutely love the stock one but it lacks the microphone feature.
So i wanted something that had microphone and swype. I ended up choosing Go Keyboard and I'm pretty satisfied with it except there is a small part at the bottom of the screen which is not reactive, hard sometimes to hit space because of that.

I used to use swiftkey x. but found a better one (at least for me) ULTRA KEYBOARD. it has the option to use swipe or not. you can also use gestures to enter symbols or hide the keyboard or delete words etc. several dictionaries. copy/paste/delete. suggestions (on/off) replacements (if I type tkvm it writes thank you very much (and you can personalize the suggestion)). themes.every one that is in the market. translator,... lots of more things... i recommended it
I use Swype because I'm super fast with it compared to regular touch typing. In certain apps I found the auto correction to be annoying though so it's disabled.

IMHO it is much more useful from the side. A vertical slider doesn't make much sense as you already have much vertical space on your display to read a message history f.e.. As soon as you hold your phone horizontally more than half of the display is blocked by the keyboard and on many phones you can't even browse your past messages without closing the keyboard. With a physical horizontal keyboard you can still read mails and/or messages - thinking of split screen with mail on one side and Signal, Threema or Google Search on the other - and type in each app by selecting it.
Landscape sliders can be incredibly useful, especially when they tilt. This one doesn't tilt yet, but the devs said they'd consider it. Once you add tilt to the mix, the keyboard becomes a media stand for netflixing et al, a insanely good ereader (lock the reader app in portrait, hold the phone like a book with your thumb over the arrow keys and use them to turn pages), and of course, more ergonomic for normal typing use and less annoying in re: glare. Having multitasking now, as hibiki mentions, is all the more reason for one. I hope this one turns out great. I do wish they'd offset the keys as the best of the last generation of landscape sliders did (HTC touch pros and droids) rather than just a grid like that, but if it tilts, I'll overlook that.
Also, what's good for any QWERTY enthusiasts is probably good for them all. If this one sells well, you can bet other form factors, including the treo/BB style portrait boards, will eventually be made as well. The first thing I thought of when I saw the Moto Z for the first time was a keyboard renaissance.

Just posting to completely agree with this. I have zero interest in a portrait physical keyboard, but always liked landscape sliders.
While this maybe a nice idea, am I the only one that notices the fatal flaw... there is no way of ever using the camera while the keyboard is in the retracted mode. The only way would be, to have to pull out the keyboard to allow the lens to be exposed.

Opening the keyboard doesn't feel like much of a chore for me, and it's not like the keyboard has to be attached at all times. If lots of pictures need to be taken for a while, toss the mod for a few hours. Fatal flaw? Different strokes I guess.
There's someone floating an eink mod right now with a short screen so as to not cover the lens. Personally I'd just as soon have it cover the camera and be a decent sized-screen.
The campaign is going to start today at 12:00 noon UK time. (GMT +0).
It will cost 60 USD for Super Early Birds and the regular price after Indiegogo will be 120 USD. The keyboard will be flippable as well.
will it fit on Moto Z Play? I think so...

It would be surprising if not, as it is a Moto Z line compatible Mod.
Dann schauen wir mal.....
The campaign looks promising. The keyboards checks all boxes for me. Tiltable, backlit and horizontal slider. I wish I could afford the special edition though. That cyan looks really smexy

It's live now. Thank you for all the support!
I backed it. They added tilt and I'm over the moon. I haven't seen a keyboard this good since 2010.
Backed it! Finally, a good 5 row slider keyboard for a high end phone! This project must succeed, spread the word!
I'm gonna support it. I already bought two. Ive been wanting a new phone w/ a physical keyboard for so long. My last phone before this one was the Droid 4
I voted to buy but only for the camera hole version.
I have my favorite keyboard....
Edit, I would be on fence til I demo'ed it.
My KB is the Bomb!
Editing features as good as these would be a must
