UPDATE 2: some people are reporting no fix or worse... hmmmm.. what's going on. Half say its getting great locks and others not... maybe its a location thing?
Farkkkkk
If the GPS is fixed in this rom, can we have some crow for the people saying it's not fixable via firmware?

Neat.
Has anyone been able to test out the compass? Whoever is making these videos, could someone ask them to demo Google Sky Map / Street View?
but this isnt for the vibrant right? or can it be ported over since they are so close to each other?

I'm having the dude test the compass... also even if this exact thing don't work on vibrant.. its proof that its software and fixable
.. that's all I really wanna know...
Update on compass soon....
It's the firmware for the Captivate, which flashes for different radios and so forth. It could be ported, but it would be a lot of unnecessary work.
To be honest, I find the idea of flashing different ROMs to be stressful. I stopped using my jailbroken iPhone because I grew tired of keeping up with flashing and jumping through hoops. I just want Samsung to fix the phone with an OTA, so I can go back to my normal life.
So, we have no word on a fix for the Vibrant. But one can assume that a fix on AT&T will find itself on the T-Mobile device.

The fix is leaked from samsung .. we will get one too. Point again is its fixable, we never knew this before till now.
Although its still not been said if its 100% working.. could be a start though
No, it's a great piece of encouragement. Still, unless something is said soon, I will probably return my phone until the official fix is out. I can always purchase it again at a later date. It's encouraging to see a leak from Samsung fix the problem, but I'm sure you can understand: $500+ is a lot to spend on a phone.
Keep delivering the good news. Hopefully the Compass has been fixed as well. I really love TouchWiz, and was dreading the possible jump to HTC Sense.

don't recall anyone saying it couldn't be fixed - can you point us at one?
the consensus opinion has been no one knew whether it was firmware or software
and btw, while this is good news, we're not totally certain this is a permanent "fix"
if it's still working in 2 or 3 weeks for the folks that installed it, then it might be considered a fix

Regardless its getting 8 satellite locks for a lot of people .. that's never happened before ... this is a leak so not even official. So official may even be better ....
I was very concerned about the compass as I wasn't convinced that could be fixed via firmware basd on what I saw in the GPS service screens (seemed laggy even straight from the device). Eugene373 posted a fix to GPS for rooted phones here ://to.ly/5TFy (add http to follow the link). I installed it and it fixed both GPS and compass for me personally. This for me was proof positive tha there will be an official Samsung fix released to solve this issue.

Mine has been doing it for a couple of weeks and I finally got fedup with this routine and called TMO and complained. I'm getting a replacement Vibrant in 3 days or so but I'm not holding my breath on it working any better really although I hope that it won't freeze and reboot at least. This official fix can't come fast enough because this GPS caused freezing and rebooting is really getting to me at this point.
Hey guys, I just wanted to post a rather positive thread for a change. I know it's been a long time coming and there have been a lot of hurdles along the way, but finally we've made it.
And from my point of view, it's goood.
Seriously, nearly all lag has completely disappeared, all applications open and close super fast, and everything just works as it should. NOTE: I haven't tried out GPS yet, but since I don't use GPS, I don't care whether it works or not. So I am a very satisfied customer and can say it was completely worth the wait. Well done Samsung! Now after all this positivity and good will I'm sure the rest of you will find ample reasons not to be satisfied, please have your say and let us know what you think of the new update.
Cheers!!!
The froyo I got from kies is ok (althought it came without market, which had to be installed manually). It was still a bit laggy tho, but much better than eclair.
Unfortunately I can't get the new update because kies states 100% battery is not enough for a firmware update...

please stop asking GPS. as I've done my research, no method to fix a crappy GPS, there's not gps fix thing in new released froyo. If you got a working GPS, it will always work, if your gps is not working, stop dreaming of getting it fixed by software update. either keep asking the retailer to replace it until you get a working one or, get an external gps instead. alternatively you can choose to return the phone and get a different one.
I'm gonna proceed the final one, return it and get a desire HD, if I'm lucky enough.

Except the retailer refused to replace it although I reported the problem and canceled the contract within 7 days. I still had to pay penalty to change the plan from SGS to iPhone 4. I know I can initiate legal action but it simply isn't worth the effort.

when will people learn that lock time is completely meaningless when ACCURACY is the main problem with the gps?
I just recently received a new Captivate today through the ATT insurance program that came preloaded with the JH7 Eclair build. The first feature that I was anxious about testing was the GPS since myself and others on this forum seemed to experience difficulty applying the OTA update from ATT. I drove an estimated 20 miles in the city and 15 miles on highway and noticed that I no longer experienced lag when making turns, or when I came to a complete stop and the navigation icon never jumped to adjacent streets or went over a 10m accuracy. I also was able to get a lock in 3-5 seconds while going 70MPH during my highway drive. When I returned home I rooted my phone and made a Nandroid backup and proceeded to flash cognition 2.4.1. Once I did this I decided to test the GPS again with a custom ROM installed and noticed that the GPS issues that I had previously experienced with my old phone were present once again. So after I tested the GPS on Cognition, I decided to restore to my original firmware and the GPS accuracy was restored to the favorable results as previously mentioned. What I am asking the community as well as the devlopers at XDA is if I provide you with my Nandroid backup files, would this be helpful in solving the GPS issues once and for all? I am just uncertain if maybe newer phones that came preloaded with JH7 may have different GPS settings than the OTA updates.
If the developers would like my Nandroid backup please just ask and I will upload.
UPDATE*
Here is the image file of the stock JH7 that has given me VERY accurate GPS results from the previous stated post. This is from a Nandroid backup and I do not know how you would go about installing this but I'm sure someone from here does and will test it. This has not been tested yet, but I respectfully challenge the developers and community to try this out to see if it is an improvement. This is an Eclair JH7 rom. Thank you for your time.

** Please note you will need to zoom in to notice all of the turns that I made. I also made a U-turn and traveled on some of the same roads in opposite directions. Everything is just as accurate as the day before.
UPDATE 3***
I would like to extend my thanks to mattbeau for trying this out and posting his results. The results furthermore prove my hypothesis and are consistent with my results. I requested mattbeau to post detailed instructions on how to flash it so others can try. Please I encourage others to give this a try the more tests we gather the easier it will be for the Developers to find what makes this different.

UPDATE 4****
Very special thank to mattbeau for posting instructions on how to get this to work. Still need a few more people to test this but so far this is the most accurate the GPS has ever been on the Captivate here it is:
download the following: http://www.multiupload.com/CB5PFRTRYF
extract with winrar or what ever you want
so this is what is working for me.
ensure the clockwork update.zip is insalled on the root of your internal SD card
create a folder /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/jh7gps/
copy system.img and nandroid.md5 to the above folder
Oneclick back to JF6
enable debugging under settings
using adb
adb restart recovery
select reinstall packages
(it will install teh clockwork recovery)
again select reinstall packages
select advanced restore
select jh7gps
select restore system
select yes
your phone will reboot with the new system.img installed
baseband is still jf6
If I could as that everyone that tries this please post their results. The more consistent this is the more things we can rule out.
UPDATE 5*****
I apologize that the megauploads links it temporarily unavailable. We are currently working on getting this back up as soon as possible. Also will be posting my My Tracks for day 3 shortly as well. I encourage anyone else to post their results as well.
Here is mattbeau's link that was originally on megauploads. Since some of you were having problems I moved it to here:
http://www.multiupload.com/CB5PFRTRYF
Let me know how this works out. I thank all of you for your assistance.
UPDATE 6******
Here is the My Tracks for the third day of testing. GPS accuracy does not appear to be deteriorating and have consistent results from previous tracks. This is looking more and more promising by the day. Comments are welcome!
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=114887993519189258855.00049509766fdff4bcb11&ll=34.720186,-77.346539&spn=0.005176,0.013078&t=h&z=17
Thank you mattbeau for your thorough comparison to other JH7 ROMs. Please keep us all posted on your findings.
Some people think that 2.4 caused GPS issues that were worse than stock. I'm not necessarily saying where I stand on the issue - but your decreased performance may just help prove that 2.4 is bad at GPS.
I feel skeptical that Samsung would have a different OTA JH7 and in store JH7 and what I said above sounds like a better idea. Hmm maybe I should go to an earlier version.... helpful either way!

I am definitely not certain as well, but the GPS performance that I am experiencing with this new phone is up to par with my Garmin. More notably, I have had my old captivate since early August and have tried out all official updates on it including JH7 that don't even compare to the perfect performance this one has. I am just trying to see if I could give my Nandroid backup to someone that knows more than I do and possibly solve this issue for custom rom development etc...
Wait a few days, if you still have awesome GPS then there might be something to it. I highly doubt it though.
Swyping...please read slowly!
im not sure about this although there quite possibly could be a combination of hardware and software. my wifes phone works perfectly with gps and we got ours at the same time but my gps has been horrible since day one but we use hers and no lag, jumping off the roads or anything

ive had 4 captivates so far. me and my wifes original 2 and 2 replacements. all 4 have been the same where sometimes there dead on accurate, and they might be like this for a week. then one day they might take 10 min. to get a lock where the day before it would lock instantly. overall id say the gps on all the phones ive had werent horrible, but could be better. im to the point now that i think its just a hardware issue, and no matter what settings we put in or what we change, the gps just isnt going to be perfect.

OP, so many of us are so over this GPS issue with these otherwise very nice performing phones. It's just a damn shame that Samsung let this line go to market with this type of problem. That being said, I, for one, appreciate those that continue to try to find a way to resolve this issue. I am one of those that read CLShortfuse's complete write-up on this matter and form that I feel pretty certain it is NOT a hardware issue; the same chip is used in other devices without issue. I think that the issue is with Samsung's coding and, perhaps, the placement of the chip in the phone.
I see a lot of notes about quick locks, slow locks, etc....the real issue is tracking, not locking. I have found that even my Garmin can take over a minute to lock, depending on where I am in the city (elevation, hills, etc.) and also is sometimes affected by weather. I've waited over 5 minutes for my Garmin to lock (only a few times) but when it does it stays locked and my tracking is very good. However, even my Garmin will loose me for a few seconds, especially when taking a ramp that it didn't expect me to (not the route it planned for me). Unfortunately, neither of my 2 Captivates worked this way. It's perplexing and frustrating. I can tell you that the fastest locks I ever got were immediately following the OTA update (I got mine through Kies Mini). Unfortunately, I flashed another ROM before I tested the tracking.
I hope some devs out there will take your offer seriously and take apart your backup, if possible.
I am going to upload the file once I have a friend with a captivate try it out first.
I agree with boomerod - remember the biggest problem for us is the losing a lock part mid-trip

are you kidding me??? zoom in on that track map, and you will see it takes you off the road all over the place. Accuracy is still horrible. I have never ever seen a phone go off track like that so dont tell us to "live with it". It may look good zoomed out but try actually looking closely at that and tell us it is perfect
Well buddy17, if you do look closely at that map you will notice that it is off less than 5 meters for the short period of time that it was off. Most GPS software maps auto lock onto streets when they are that close but when using My Tracks it does not. I am almost certain it is impossible to have GPS that is spot on all the time and this could also be due to the inaccuracy of Google My Tracks. If you would post your results I am sure you would see a significant difference in tracking.
Also the GPS performance on this firmware seems to not have the "turn lag" or movement while being stopped issues that I have previously experienced as well as what others have reported. I am almost done uploading and all I am respectfully requesting from the community is to try it out and see what happens please. I would like to thank the community for their time and effort to make our captivate have the best experience possible.

I agree with the others, this thread is a waste of time. Your software image is no different then the other 500,000 JH7 phones leaving the factory or that had the update. If Samsung made a fix, we would see a different version number.
They don't just replace files and leave the version numbers the same - that would be a support nightmare.
If someone was interested, they would just compare your files to another set and look for differences; BUT, because everyone else knows that files don't get changed without creating a new build, they are not going to spend time on your challenge.
Thought i'd post these here. Others can post theres as well. If I get any answers I'll post those here also.
1. Are there plans to fix the gps issues on the epic? Or is it simply hardware related?
2. Why did samsung choose the rfs file system?

I have a problem where the gps doesn't lock at random. Usually a battery pull clears the problem. Accuracy is usually within 30 feet or so.
Rfs? It was the thing they had at the time. On new phones they are using ext4.
Supposedly 2.2.1 official on Monday will address GPS.... we will see... not sure the point of that Q&A at this time (the next few days) as we have yet to see what they listened to for the build they are dropping in a few days. I honestly think he wants our input on matters other than software/hardware complaints that are well known. I think that will be useful if everyone is contented with the 2.2.1 release, Its not a bad thing to have a suggestion box, IF the issues are addressed somewhat promptly...
I asked:
Does Samsung intend to address the hardware keyboard issue that causes the phone to miss keystrokes?
and
one other question that I completely forgot.
Edit: strike that, just remembered.
Is Samsung going to offer firmware updates for the Camera which is available in the settings menu of the leaked 2.2 rom??

Gps locks fine and quickly, but then loses lock after 5-15 minutes. You have to manually turn the gps on and off again to get it to re lock.
And I asked because it was supposed to be addressed in an update that came our months ago but still happens for a lot of us.

I got a replacement like Jan 3, for my OG that I had since launch week, and aside from the screen fail, my original never dropped keys... not that I can remember... it also seems to be getting worse, and since January I have not gotten that much faster at typing on it to make a difference that way... but I HOPE its software... else I may end up with another TEP claim.

My question is what is samsung's plans for future os updates for the epic?

From the sound of it, Svetius at captivate says that xda will be filtering the questions before they go to Sammy.

I can probably easily tell you how they will answer it or at least summarize it..

1. Are there plans to fix the gps issues on the epic? Or is it simply hardware related?

We are working hard to isolate and fix this issue..
2. Why did samsung choose the rfs file system?

We chose RFS for its reliability (they made RFS themselves they are not going to say any bad about it)
3. What is Samsung's corporate position on open-source software development?

Samsung is committed to open source

Those will be your answers..in a fancier manner..
As for GPS locking , I lock just fine..I noticed Google Maps gets stuck here and there but if I use any other software there is no issue...

Generally not for long. Leave WiFi on for 2 days, without ever shutting it off. Then try getting a lock. Promise you won't be able to.
I've never had problems locking on to GPS
The problem that I share with many others is that the GPS will randomly stop connecting with satellites after 10-20 minutes of use. Sometimes a lot sooner than that. It'll reconnect after about 2 minutes, but its really annoying when you're using google nav.
I've tried using GPS status and I can see that it has a great signal, but it won't connect to a couple of sats at random times. Very buggy.
AFTER the update, if it happens, those with GPS issues should get an ALL GPS thread like the 2.2 one... it seems like a real clusterfuk as it stands, and theres no clear proof that its software, or a crappy GPS radio, and thats the end of the story. After the update, which claims to address GPS, those with GPS issues need to compare notes, and figure out as best as possible what is hardware limitation, what is software, what is user error. As stated above, other software besides google maps should be tried as well, in case there is something weird happening with that... I dont use GPS much, so I wonder why this issue keeps popping up so much, and people dont collaborate enough on solving the issue. After that best GPS fix ever thread popped up, I Odin'ed to DI18, and did all the steps, even considered going to DG27 or whatever to be extra retentive, but once I got all the way up to my rooted, rom'd setup, got 2 meters, or maybe 1... thats all I bothered with. I understand those that use their epics as a tom-tom need much higher standards of connectivity.... hopefully you wont be disappointed.
I hope so too. I work at several different locations and user the phone as nav. Gps locks fine, just loses lock soon enough, often at critical times...

Ok I hope I dont get flamed for this but it worked for me maybe it will for others. I just got my GPS working after getting off the phone with Tmobile support. I had it working on eclair and it stopped after froyo. I kind of hinted to them as to what I needed done and they did it! Now I know exactly what to ask for if this ever happens again. BTW Tmobile is the best hope we dont lose them to ATT.
Ok so whoever performed the gps script that is out there, the gps restore app or anything else on pretty much any rom and didnt get it to work can try calling Tmobile and asking them to restart your network connection. You will have to use a phone other than the vibrant. They will ask you to do a battery pull while the phone is on, they will do something on their end then ask you to turn your phone back on. When it turns back on the GPS should work, It did for me. If it doesnt work please dont flame me, it was worth a shot. If it helped then your welcome!
Thanks, any info for better performance is welcomed in my book!

There are great fixes out there for GPS adding this is just another worth a shot.

The reason I thought to share this was because like many people on many threads I noticed that the fixed didnt work and many dont want to open their phones and perform the hardware fix. But with this simple method maybe I can save a few people from prying open their phones and causing havoc. But it worked for me, now I get good gps reception, enough to use to get places with.
I've had great success with bionix v and the gingerbread gps fix. Stock bionix v will have gps loosing signal every few minutes. With the gingerbread gps fix, there are less locked birds but they have much higher snr and I don't loose signal. Using waze now with those mods I don't jump around the map like I did with stock bionix v
On this rom im running, i get a lock in less than a second and a stunning accuracy.

I've never been able to speak to anyone at Tmo who would halfway even understand me trying to explain to them the technique you just used. Not to say it wouldn't work but I don't think most of their reps would be capable of doing what you are suggesting even if they were 'able' to do it! Last guy I dealt with was a complete joke, kept putting me on hold and then would come back and say something like he was talking to someone else! I swear he was talking to 3 different people at once, putting people on hold, and not being able to remember who was on what line! Nightmare. Ugh. But hey, if you got a couple hours to waste trying and it works for ya then by all means go right ahead!

Actually you tell them your gps doesnt work and that it did before the froyo update. When it didnt work on eclair tell them that they had you pull the battery while the phone was on and then they sent something to your phone or reset the network. Idk who you talk to but I did this yesterday and it took less than a half hour. Worse comes to worst you get the android "experts" to do it.

Actually my GPS NEVER worked until i spent an hour on the phone *****ing and another hour on live chat until they swapped my phone with what i believe is a brand new one and now the GPS works perfectly! It's definitely a hardware problem. People do the hardware fix, it works, I swapped mine for a new one, it works. I didn't feel like popping my phone open and I'm no good with a soldering gun so why should I have to do the hardware fix myself?
My GPS works respectably well, maybe it just depends on manufacturing date.
