I've been searching for some hours, but I haven't found anything. Though I'm not that good at searching forums.
As the title says, is there a way to use Android as the primary operating system?
I am using darkstone HD2Froyo v1 now, and I won't be going back to WinMo after using it. So is it possible to remove WinMo and only use Android, that's my question.
I'm really sorry if I am reposting this.
Not to use from NAND, but there are some auto bootloaders that will find and run CLRCAD & Haret before WinMo boots fully.

There are rumours @ that a fully working hd² version is due sometime in Sept, but I think its still early days yet fingersX.

I have read the same rumors about a solid full bore ROM in Sept also. All I can say is.... I hope so. After having N1, Droid X, Droid, and iPhone... I am enjoying my HD2 running FROYO more than them all.

the SOD needs to be put the rest for GOOD on all phones 1st before we can start thinking about a NAND rom for android.. there are other issues as well such as the kernel code for directing running of android since it is a totally different OS to winmo..
I think most people feel T mobile and/or HTC dropped the ball by releasing the HD2 as a windows mobile device. I don't know contractually what they have with Microsoft in regards to the phone still, but seeing as windows mobile is dead in the water and there isn't an upgrade path for windows phone 7 I wouldn't mind an official android ROM released for the phone. I certainly want android on my phone, but I have doubts that this will come in any official capacity. Shame too because it could be used to draw attention to T mobile and HTC as it would certainly make news somewhere and potentially put a spotlight on them for new customers and increase sales for the existing product line.
I considered buying a samsung galaxy s but I can't part with my 4.3 inch screen. So i agree that id rather have android. winmo just isn't the mobile id for me I read the irclogs and cyanogen is looking to do a cm based ROM for the hd2 so maybe he could help with some of the other problems
I'm waiting for Android to get the same app (functionality) as I can get from WM first. I had an Android phone before I got the HD2. I tried Android on the HD2 a couple of days ago, but I kept wanting to use my WM apps.
Alreader2. I found 'fdreader' but it seems to only support epub files. Alreader2 supports html, text, doc, chm etc.. I like to read in various formats, so I need an Android app to replace Alreader2. (fdreader is nice though.)
TotalCommander. It can connect to my samba file server. 'Astro' for Android is supposed to support it, but it crashes after the first successful connection.
TCPMP. Rockplayer for Android is supposed to also support lots of video codecs, but I hate the 'R' logo at the top of the screen when a video is playing.
I personally prefer the HD2 to anything else. Even to the Evo. Networks aside I prefer the form factor of the HD2, its thinner and better feeling in the hand. Now that I've used this ROM its perfect. I'm never switching back. Short battery life isn't an issue to me l. I love my phone to death and I'm so happy I got it.

No more birds and bees.. I would tell my children a story of HD2 and Android. And they lived happily ever after.
Edit: Btw, if you look around, you should be able to spot similar posts/threads. We are currently unable to run android as a primary OS, but there are ROMs and winmo apps that allow you to auto boot android. General consensus says that a working full android rom is due in September.

there are apps which provides the same functions as those in Winmo.. its just that with the recent froyo release, there mayb compabitable issues.. another point to note is that we are running froyo froma kernel which is purely user-created, and not officially from HTC.. as a result, we have quite a lot of issues to iron out so there will be apps which might not run or install properly.. lastly, we are running an android build booted from winmo, stability will arrive once we clear the bugs and proceed onwards to NAND releases..
Here here!!! HD2 n Androd is match made in Dev Heaven!

Alreader2: Agreed. Bought it and am irked at essentially having thrown good cash away.
Total Commander: Try ES File Explorer. Nicer UI than Astro's to my preference. Neither file explorer crashed on me for sambas.
TCPMP: Legend has it an old revision of RockPlayer didn't have the R logo. Shame old stuff like that "DemoPlayer" named variant doesn't float around the web in any way once new versions, different only in the presence of a watermark, get released.

Did you have to do anything special to get Froyo to run on your HD2 other than copying stuff to your SD Card?
I just found out Desire ROM that was introduced by pocketnow and downloaded. After simple copying into my sd card I am able to run Desire Android OS on my HD2 from it with only ONE issue - Camera points out to press optical trackball to snap a photo - so I cannot use camera...
If there is a simple way of getting Froyo onto HD2 can you please direct me where to search?
Thanks!

Basically I just want something that'll last a day and won't just die quick like my G1. I really wanted to just skip out on the data plan and just get the 20$ unlimited text plan, but for some reason Blackberries REQUIRE the data plan and the cheaper spectrum just don't look as good.
So I'm stuck with Android, and well I just don't know what to decide. I love having a keyboard, so I was looking at the My Touch 3G slide, but then I saw the HTC HD2 which is pretty big, but just looks plain awesome.
The problem here is that it doesn't have a physical keyboard and I haven't really tried the on screen text alot, is it easy to use an on screen keyboard? I have a contract with T-Mobile so they'll give me that "2 years expired" discount.
I love having alot of apps (which I don't know if the HD2 has a dedicated app store to the scope of the android market), like taking high-res pictures (though it's not a MUST), I already have an iPod so music is set, but the battery life is also very important. I don't really care about size though.
The HD2 looks very awesome, but I don't know if I should just stick with an Android.
The on screen keyboard it nice and the best keyboard you can find on a non-apple device, as for the apps, Windows Mobile is lacking in that section, BUT, if you have a look in the Android Development thread for the HD2, you can have both WinMo and Android 2.2 FroYo running on the great phone that is the HTC HD2.
EDIT: Also, I am using Android on my HD2 to reply to your post, and its greeeaaat!

Wow, really? That's awesome if it can run Android!!
If I install android, can I still install apps to the SD card and such? Is getting Android on the HD2 safe and easy?
I'm actually pretty scared, I jailbroke/routed my G1 but it took quite awhile for me to get it right.. If the HD2 can run Android nice and or near perfect I'm settling on the HD2.

I have a SERIOUS disagreement with your statement that WinMo is lacking in the apps department. There are literally HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of applications made for WinMo. Just because they are not on the Marketplace, doesn't mean that they aren't there.
^
What kind of apps?
I had alot of fun messing around with soundboards, games, camera FX's, and other stuff like translators, shazam, and weird stuff. I just like having a variety of stuff available at disposal for some weird reason >_>
Also thanks for the replies guys, really appreciate it.

Ur right, there are hundreds of apps for WinMo, but android has thousands. and to the OP, Android runs completly off the SD card so all the apps are stored on the SD card as well as all the data and does not touch the HD2's NAND memory so you can dual boot WinMo 6.5 and Android 2.1/2.2.
It is easy to run Android on the HD2, jus put the files on the SD and run the two programs and ur set.
Sent from my HTC HD2 running DarkStone HD2Froyo v1
I dunno. The OP really sounds like he's a android fan. I've got nothing against that. Windows Mobile is not meant for all people and at time users making the change from iphone or android can find it difficult to adjust to the HD2. The keyboard for the HD2 is not great. I would recommend that you stick with an android OS phone such as the Vibrant or whatever it's called. But if you do wish to get the HD2 I've got a sticky with how to flash your phone videos, link in m sig.
This is tough, I was planning to get the phone today but I decided I wasn't ready to make the choice yet.
They have this "get 2 smart phones for the price of 1" offer which is why the My Touch 3G was a big choice for me so my little brother could get his phone updated as well, but I'd have to cancel the line (since it's for NEW customers) and re-open and change my number which seems stupid.
This is a hard choice
Vibrant vs HD2. I'm still torn between the two since they are similar except one has a bigger screen but no native android, and one has native android but doesn't have a big screen in comparison. I'll be honest here, I love free apps but I don't know if you can root the Vibrant and manually install apps (Confirm or Deny).
Still though.. I'm a bit torn >_> Arghh, why do these phones have to be so damn sexy?
will a custom ROM have android instead of WM6.5 ?? i mean it will direct boot to android or we still have to open android from WM6.5 ??
at the moment you run android as an application in windows mobile.
other way is to flash andoid to nand like we now flash our windows mobile roms.
as far as i know there is not enough room to flash both OSes to nand. <- pls correct me if im wrong
oh ok when it will be 100% functional with everything working it could be flashed to nand without the WM ?
why did u buy a winmo phone when u want android?
...the world as we know it...will come to an end... lol well what's most likely to happen is people wanting to get windows phone 7 on the phone.

i think thats wrong. android is NOT an app running in windows mobile. this would mean android is runnning as some kind of emulation. as far as i know, winmo is still needed in order to initialize the hardware. by starting haret.exe, the wince-kernel is shut down and a linux bootloader is started.
hopefully we'll be able to flash an android rom to nand and have a device which can hold either OS equally. I personally like the fact that the HD2 can become versatile. I agree - that if someone wants to run android only, he should buy an Android device. I wanted to have a taste of android with the ability to run WM as i have for the past 4 years.

I bought the device with the intent on running android. I am not help bent on completely removing it
There hasnt been a device until the evo 4g that had the same screen size. And since i dont hop carriers I cant use the evo.
The my touch 3g slide screen is too small
The my touch screen is too small
The samsung galaxy screen is too small
The g1 screen is too small.
The samsung behold 2 sucked !
THe cliq sucked
The nexus 1 screen is too small
So people do have reasons to have the hd2.
Plus a lot of people I have met with the hd2 didnt realize what they were buying. Most people hate the phone. They then see mine with android and fall in love.

Can some one answer this question. What windows mobile 6.5 do, that android can't do? This is my first WM phone and I tho it was alright. I would of got the Evo but I can't switch carriers until the end of the year. Since now we got android, I'm staying with t-mo. I pay full price for this phone ($560.00 in NYC) I first regretted and since android I don't. Anyways I found that android do much more for me than WM. So if I'm wrong please some one tell me. Ps: excuse my english.

For me, I would consider the NAND flash for Android ROM the 100% fully functional since that is of primary importance to me here.
I bought my HD2 even though I knew it had WM. And at the time I didn't want Android at all, just my WM, but with some configurations & such.
But now that I have Android running on it instead, I never want to go back.
And just like someone else said, there ain't an Android phone around that have the same hardware specs as the HD2. Except the EVO, but I've had my phone a long time before they released the EVO. And from what I know it's only available in the US. Maybe I could import one and configure it to run on Swedish networks, but wth..
The wife and I got this phone and she didn't realize it was Windows Mobile. This was my first experience with Sense UI and thought it was awesome.
I loved the phone for what it could do and actually "Used" it to it's potential. She "HATES" it. Then again, I don't blame her. Sense fails hard when it comes to texting and load lag
She can't wait till I can flash Android to her phone. Me, i'll stick with my options.

I don't think people who HATE WinMo buy this phone with the sole intent of putting another OS on it. I think most people bought it for the screen & the media capabilities. For me, I saw a lot of potential in the hardware specs and bought mine cause it's the last real WM phone(I'm sappy like that) and because it's a GSM phone that I can unlock & use for years to come. It was like buying a barebones PC that I could run whatever I want on & have multi-boot systems.
I decided to run Android on it initially out of sheer curiosity, and so I can learn the next OS I'm gonna be using. When WM dies out(it's GOING to happen, so we may as well face it), Android will be what I will move on to partly because its Linux & open source, and partly because there's no way in pus-spewing, blood-gutted hell that I would ever use an iPhone or Blackberry(WP7 has NEVER been an option). I must say, Android runs VERY well on this phone even in its current stage of development, I can't wait to see how awesome it'll be as a fully flashable rom. I'm already almost to the point of not even missing WM anymore. I've been running it for a week now & I'm getting to know how everything works & I love it. Very versatile & powerful, and quite stable. I don't think I quite realized just how many lockups and crashes I was really having with WM until I started using Android as my main OS. The first time I used Android I HATED it because I had a bad build & an underpowered phone(One of the first leaked Froyo builds on a Sprint Hero) and it ran like crap. But with the combo I've got now, it's simply awesome. Everything is so integrated & all the programs mesh together so beautifully. It really does 'just work', and it's hackable & customizable at the same time. Best of both worlds. If & when a NAND version of Android for the HD2 comes out, you can count me in.
Don't get me wrong, I will ALWAYS love WinMo. I think it's the best mobile OS there ever was, and it's incredibly sad that it's dying. It would still be going strong if Microsoft had just marketed it better & hadn't copped out with WP7. But I'm not gonna stay with a stagnant platform that nobody develops for anymore(I'd have stayed with Palm OS otherwise), and I was honestly starting to get bored with it. I had pushed WM to it's limits & did everything I could possibly do with it, and it's just time to move on. I believe Android is the wave of the future, and will eventually overtake the iPhone in popularity.
Plus I love robots, so anything named 'Android' is automatically cool in my book
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Friendly robots are a plus in my book.

I'm currently using a Vibrant (rooted, flashed, blah blah) but I've been looking into getting an HD2 to play with now that they're going for dirt cheap on craigslist. Before I do this, could anyone tell me if there are any 100% functional android roms out? I had an hd2 when it first came out, and wasn't a winmo fan. At all. But now that there's been a lot of progress made, I'm willing to give it another try.
No... there are currently no Android ROMs for the HD2. you still need a Windows Mobile ROM and run Android off of the SD
Please refer to the Android Development section in the other HD2 area for Android builds and news regarding Android development.
Nope, there is no a 100% working build yet. All android builds have users reporting SOD, long wake up time, and other issues like low in call volume levels.
Alright, thank you both. As for winmo, one of my main concerns was the lag in texting, using sense, etc. Have any steps been taken to improve these issues? I would search the forums if I could, but I'm getting a pretty lousy connection here in my building. Also, I didn't get very good 3g on my HD2. Have any connection fixes come out?
To answer your questions, No and Yes(Maybe). Texting through the HTC client is still as slow as ever, but if you disable it and use the regular WinMo text program everything is gravy. And the connection issues are probobly just your area, but you can always flash a new Radio ROM and see if it helps any.

The world will never know!
I can tell you that there is an offical 3.15 tmo rom out there as a RC. I've put it on several phones and so far can state that it has cured all problems we've experienced with the HD2.
I need to test swype+text tho, forgot about that one!!
Official 3.15 ROM eh? Where is the link?
Actually it's 3.14, and still officially in testing phase, although it's more of a release candidate. Splash screen says "Test, not for sale" and all that.
So "official" was a bad choice of a word, but I did get it directly from TMO.
I too own the Vibrant and got an HD2 to play around with. The HD2 is nice, but I love my Vibrant, and would never use the HD2 as a primary phone until a complete Android port is available. Nice hardware, just a POS OS. I am curious to see what the update brings to WinMo on the HD2. It goes without saying that I am anxiously awaiting a 100% functional Droid ROM on this thing.
See, its people like this that bring WinMo down for no reason. WinMo, especially on the HD2 is no "POS OS". WinMo runs circles around Android as far as compatability and open-ness is concerned. Android may look "nicer"(if looking like Ubuntu is nice...), but WinMo has it where it counts...*cough no rooting to access file system cough*.

Have you tried installing Cookies Home Tab Editor on your HD2? It's free and makes a Winmo phone have the same functionality as Android with all of the icons, widgets, etc. Supports multiple pages of icons with a home screen just like Android, but also with the sweet Windows mobile stuff as well. Double the awesome. Check it out if you haven't.
WinMo is just a little more nerdy in terms of customization compared to the Iphone and Android. There is a lot to learn and if you aren't at least semi computer savvy and into nerding out on your phone (reading a lot), it's not the phone for you. I wouldn't recommend it for my 60 year old mom.
Mostly, Winmo phones aren't awesome out of the box usually. In terms of out of the box, the HD2 is the best winmo phone that I've seen. Sense is clean.
I have an HD2, Jailbroken Iphone and a Rooted G1 and have played with newer Android devices. The HD2 is by far, still the best. It just does more awesome stuff. You can customize anything on Winmo. ANYTHING.
I really like all three operating systems though. None of them suck.
I have been watching the WP7 threads for a little while now and have noticed that there doesn't seen to be much activity in there.
I was wondering if WP7 isn't very popular among the community. For me, I love it. I think M$ has done pretty good with this one, and DFT have done even better, Thanks guys. Also thanks to the chefs too.

ANDROID 2.3.3 the BEST OS i am using it on my HD2
WP7 mainly, occasionally dip into Android on my SD, starting to think I may just use WP7 when the nodo comes out, beginning to get thoughts why do I need my hd2 when all I use is WP7.
Android is just to messy, not a single keyboard on android comes anywhere close to the Standard WP7 one, Android is becoming fragmented with now the tegra seperate apps, the seperate Expedia play ones also, this is where iPhone and WP7 will prevail. I know its difficult for this to not frament over time with new technologies but to have so many different speced Android devices available at the same time, that run different games and compatibility in my mind is a mess and I am starting to dislike where Android is heading.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
I can't understand why WP7 isn't as popular as WinMob 6.5 according to the poll at this moment in time. I have been using it as my full time OS since getting my phone back from repair 2 weeks ago. I only get the occasional lockup (albeit for a second or too) and the odd app might not work (i.e. Messenger) but overall, I am very happy with it. Considering too, the amount of bugs that had to be ironed out when Android was ported, it's bloody marvellous.
Hi.
I really like WP7 and I think it fits our HD2's, yet WP7 is very immature.
For the people who are planning on moving to WP7 instead of Android, what is the milestone you are waiting for?
For the people who are not planning on moving, what are the main reasons?
Currently, I'm waiting for Mango final and a very specific application - Whatsapp.
I realize there are alternatives, but most of my friends with iOS and Android are using Whatsapp.
Anyways, its not Whatsapp as a single application, but a maturity of WP7 as an OS...
Are there any other crucial issues you think should be resolved before WP7 can be used as a main OS?
i think hd2 will get ports from future matured releases of WP7 (at least for some time).
since my hd2 is not just a phone, i am not willing to consider moving on to native WP7 devices. if i can go for multiple OSs and play with all of them, why on earth i'd limit myself to just one?
but, tmo, if u'r phone is just a phone to make calls or browse internet, native WP7 is the choice for u.
but for me.. NO. i think i'll keep my HD2
point is, i dont need to chose between WP7 and android. i can keep both.

The OP didnt say anything about getting a native WP7 device, He was referring to using WP7 as main OS on your HD2.
@ OP
I'm contemplating keeping WP7 on my phone permanently since I can still play with Android on my Tab. I really like WP7, yes its not android (which is a great os) but its a great OS itself and runs really smooth.
I'm using WP7 on my HD2 and love it. I think WP7 is better than Android and the mature issue is getting less of an issue every day: apps are showing up every day.
is there contacts sync in wp7 sync from facebook and gmail

Yes, you can sync facebook, gmail and other sources.
It's the only os I use & only os I would use. Not a fan of Android, so that's not an alternative. WM was great for its time, but let's face it, that time is done. WP7 is the only os for me!

dont say that!!
WM may be the ugly sister that even her parents didnt want but its a beast of an OS, there is nothing and there is unlikely to ever be an OS that can do as much as WM can. yeah it looks crap, an runs crap, but it wins hands down in every other aspect. I'd love to dual boot WM and WP, but as it is Im running WP on my day to day device and WM on the backup device, WP is so much better with the UI it just makes using it plesant, I'll not be moving back but im also unlieky to ever trully leave WM either. Droid had a look in for 6 months before WP but got board with it.
Lol, I agree WM is a beast & very friendly to us super user types. Don't get me wrong I loved it when I used it. But now I'm completely hooked on WP. But when I get a native WP I'll switch my HD2 back to WM so I can tweak it again for fun. ^_^

I really really want to move to WP7 as my main OS however my biggest tidbits need to be fixed before I will do such. Mainly, no customization of ringtones/alert sounds (without sideloading apps, etc.)
I don't know if they corrected this in Mango but when I add my 15 year old Live ID, it intergrates all my contacts from that ID into my contact list. Same with Facebook!
I was a die hard fan of WM and Android is ok but not where my heart is. WM had lots of raw power and after playing with WP, it is really something I can see myself using.

Wow, you had a hotmail (HoTMaiL) account since before MS owned it, bet you there isnt many of us still kicking around! might i suggest trimming your contacts as if like mine, most of them no longer matter when going back to 1996
Facebook contacts can be removed if you dont already have that contact in you lists
I will stay definetly on WP7, I wanted to try Android, but then I heared that they are a lot of security vulnaribilities in the OS.
Aswell Apps in the Marketplace contain Malware, so I don't want to play roulette with my device...
Asking for live id and cant able so stuck back to android

im new to this, and it's my first reply on this site. and sorry if its a late reply.
i am currently running MIUI android and i love it! it's perfect for my HD2 and i am having no problems.
a few times i have flashed WP7 with 'ok' roms (not perfect) and loved it - even though i couldn't get live services and market activated.
ALSO...in the process of switching between android and WP7, it has really messed up my SD cards - even when using different ones for each OS.
but just like you, i can't live without whatsapp as i use it everyday without fail. so does anybody know if it's going to be possible to get whatapp on wp7? and i m not really following wp7 on hd2 so what stage is it at now? like stable, lots of bugs, or is there a perfect build out there?
I'm watching how Mango goes before I make a final call. Some of the features I'm looking for are hidden SSID support, SMS/call backup&restore, wifi hotspot. I use those features a lot so if they're in Mango like I've heard they are then I'll probably switch my HD2 to being a WP7 device full-time.
I have a handful of apps that I bought in Android that it looks like I'd need to re-buy but it's not more than ~15 dollars (USD) worth so I'd be okay with it.
I would move to wp7, but no wlan hotspot, no using wifi android tablet.
When I get drunk, I pull out my blackberry and trying to do anything is just a mess.
When I pull out my WP7 it makes me so glad, honestly that I can use my phone when I am drunk.
I'm actually going to test out WP7 soon and Im really hoping that mango turns out to be a success
Yes. Tried iPhone. Tried Android. Tried WP7. WP7 is for me.
