HD2 or DESIRE - need your inputs on this one..

Hello xda folks, i'm currently using my beloved touch pro 2 but wanting to uupgrade to HD2 for a long time now, i was wondering what can you suggest, HD2 or Desire? i would also love to be able to boot for android, i could have gotten the evo 4 but i live in ASIA and there is no GSM version of it. Any inputs/ideas are greatly appreciated. Can the HD2 handle the daily use for android? Fell in love with the Big screen on HD2 but ive tried desire and it kicks *ss any idea or inputs will really help

you can dual boot android on hd2..its not completely finished and still has a few issues but been using it for day 3 now and no crash or problems

would you suggest hd2 over desire? ive heard of horror stories on the keypad for hd2, but im sure desire is just the same since there is no dedicated keyboard like tp2

personally i would wait for the HTC Desire HD (Ace) which should come out in mid september apparently...
i probably could guarantee you, you wont use WinMo alot as i dont if u dont like it you can always get the HD2 ;D its still a one of best phone even after 10 months from launch and will be for a long time.

There are so many of these threads popping up, just get a Desire and be done with it. The HD2 will never run Android as well as a native Android phone and most people looking for/ used to it just ***** and moan about WM 6.5/6.5.x.
Or as someone else mentioned, if you can wait, see what becomes of the Desire HD.
I personally would take Windows Mobile over Android at the moment, I love this hunk of junk OS we have, I really do.

I completely agree with this statement... If you want to use android full-time, get a native android phone. People keep thinking that just because they have an android port running on the HD2 that it will run as well as a phone designed for android, but look at the history of these android ports... it's nothing new getting android to run on a winmo phone. They have android running GREAT on the HD2, but it's still an unofficial port and will never run as well as a phone designed for android. The drivers aren't optimized and we don't have a giant companie's expensive developer's to to develop it. Not saying our devs aren't doing an excellent job, cause they are... but they don't have the time or resources HTC does.
Personally, I think the HD2 is the best phone out... but I still prefer WinMo. I also love android, and I love to be able to use android on my phone as well. It's awesome to have my powerful winmo phone that can also boot into android when I want. But I bought the phone for WinMo... if I was gonna use android most of the time, I would buy an android phone. The HD2 is never gonna run android as smoothly and as stable as a native android phone, and no one should realistically expect it to.

HD2 with latest ROM looks amazing, runs amazing and is stable, the only reason id even consider Android is the app stores, there is no functional difference in my opinion and as such, if i were you, id choose by the hardware alone, all this WM bashing is BS, a decent ROM (i use Energy) works perfect. That said, im not bashing Android, im simply saying it doesnt offer anything new, its the same, except you can download hundreds more c**p in it.

will a custom ROM have android instead of WM6.5 ?? i mean it will direct boot to android or we still have to open android from WM6.5 ??

at the moment you run android as an application in windows mobile.
other way is to flash andoid to nand like we now flash our windows mobile roms.
as far as i know there is not enough room to flash both OSes to nand. <- pls correct me if im wrong

why did u buy a winmo phone when u want android?

what would happen ..... it will run 100% no more no less , alltho i doubt that will ever happen cuz it occasionally has bad days on nexus too , like all the OS-es

i think thats wrong. android is NOT an app running in windows mobile. this would mean android is runnning as some kind of emulation. as far as i know, winmo is still needed in order to initialize the hardware. by starting haret.exe, the wince-kernel is shut down and a linux bootloader is started.

hopefully we'll be able to flash an android rom to nand and have a device which can hold either OS equally. I personally like the fact that the HD2 can become versatile. I agree - that if someone wants to run android only, he should buy an Android device. I wanted to have a taste of android with the ability to run WM as i have for the past 4 years.

I bought the device with the intent on running android. I am not help bent on completely removing it
There hasnt been a device until the evo 4g that had the same screen size. And since i dont hop carriers I cant use the evo.

Can some one answer this question. What windows mobile 6.5 do, that android can't do? This is my first WM phone and I tho it was alright. I would of got the Evo but I can't switch carriers until the end of the year. Since now we got android, I'm staying with t-mo. I pay full price for this phone ($560.00 in NYC) I first regretted and since android I don't. Anyways I found that android do much more for me than WM. So if I'm wrong please some one tell me. Ps: excuse my english.

For me, I would consider the NAND flash for Android ROM the 100% fully functional since that is of primary importance to me here.

I bought my HD2 even though I knew it had WM. And at the time I didn't want Android at all, just my WM, but with some configurations & such.
But now that I have Android running on it instead, I never want to go back.
And just like someone else said, there ain't an Android phone around that have the same hardware specs as the HD2. Except the EVO, but I've had my phone a long time before they released the EVO. And from what I know it's only available in the US. Maybe I could import one and configure it to run on Swedish networks, but wth..

The wife and I got this phone and she didn't realize it was Windows Mobile. This was my first experience with Sense UI and thought it was awesome.
I loved the phone for what it could do and actually "Used" it to it's potential. She "HATES" it. Then again, I don't blame her. Sense fails hard when it comes to texting and load lag
She can't wait till I can flash Android to her phone. Me, i'll stick with my options.

I don't think people who HATE WinMo buy this phone with the sole intent of putting another OS on it. I think most people bought it for the screen & the media capabilities. For me, I saw a lot of potential in the hardware specs and bought mine cause it's the last real WM phone(I'm sappy like that) and because it's a GSM phone that I can unlock & use for years to come. It was like buying a barebones PC that I could run whatever I want on & have multi-boot systems.
I decided to run Android on it initially out of sheer curiosity, and so I can learn the next OS I'm gonna be using. When WM dies out(it's GOING to happen, so we may as well face it), Android will be what I will move on to partly because its Linux & open source, and partly because there's no way in pus-spewing, blood-gutted hell that I would ever use an iPhone or Blackberry(WP7 has NEVER been an option). I must say, Android runs VERY well on this phone even in its current stage of development, I can't wait to see how awesome it'll be as a fully flashable rom. I'm already almost to the point of not even missing WM anymore. I've been running it for a week now & I'm getting to know how everything works & I love it. Very versatile & powerful, and quite stable. I don't think I quite realized just how many lockups and crashes I was really having with WM until I started using Android as my main OS. The first time I used Android I HATED it because I had a bad build & an underpowered phone(One of the first leaked Froyo builds on a Sprint Hero) and it ran like crap. But with the combo I've got now, it's simply awesome. Everything is so integrated & all the programs mesh together so beautifully. It really does 'just work', and it's hackable & customizable at the same time. Best of both worlds. If & when a NAND version of Android for the HD2 comes out, you can count me in.
Don't get me wrong, I will ALWAYS love WinMo. I think it's the best mobile OS there ever was, and it's incredibly sad that it's dying. It would still be going strong if Microsoft had just marketed it better & hadn't copped out with WP7. But I'm not gonna stay with a stagnant platform that nobody develops for anymore(I'd have stayed with Palm OS otherwise), and I was honestly starting to get bored with it. I had pushed WM to it's limits & did everything I could possibly do with it, and it's just time to move on. I believe Android is the wave of the future, and will eventually overtake the iPhone in popularity.
Plus I love robots, so anything named 'Android' is automatically cool in my book

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Friendly robots are a plus in my book.

Once android 2.2 is fully working, android gingerbread will be released and people can start working on that. Windows phone 7 is also a possibility. Ubuntu is still under development as well. The possibilities are endless.

100% Functional ROM

I'm currently using a Vibrant (rooted, flashed, blah blah) but I've been looking into getting an HD2 to play with now that they're going for dirt cheap on craigslist. Before I do this, could anyone tell me if there are any 100% functional android roms out? I had an hd2 when it first came out, and wasn't a winmo fan. At all. But now that there's been a lot of progress made, I'm willing to give it another try.

No... there are currently no Android ROMs for the HD2. you still need a Windows Mobile ROM and run Android off of the SD

Nope, there is no a 100% working build yet. All android builds have users reporting SOD, long wake up time, and other issues like low in call volume levels.

Alright, thank you both. As for winmo, one of my main concerns was the lag in texting, using sense, etc. Have any steps been taken to improve these issues? I would search the forums if I could, but I'm getting a pretty lousy connection here in my building. Also, I didn't get very good 3g on my HD2. Have any connection fixes come out?

To answer your questions, No and Yes(Maybe). Texting through the HTC client is still as slow as ever, but if you disable it and use the regular WinMo text program everything is gravy. And the connection issues are probobly just your area, but you can always flash a new Radio ROM and see if it helps any.

Wow are stories are exactly the same! I had a HD2 the first week they came out then sold it because of WinMo. I also bought a Vibrant and still have it (Rooted and playing with ROMS). I now bought a HD2 to play with and experiment with ROMS and Android on it.

The world will never know!

I can tell you that there is an offical 3.15 tmo rom out there as a RC. I've put it on several phones and so far can state that it has cured all problems we've experienced with the HD2.
I need to test swype+text tho, forgot about that one!!

Actually it's 3.14, and still officially in testing phase, although it's more of a release candidate. Splash screen says "Test, not for sale" and all that.
So "official" was a bad choice of a word, but I did get it directly from TMO.

I too own the Vibrant and got an HD2 to play around with. The HD2 is nice, but I love my Vibrant, and would never use the HD2 as a primary phone until a complete Android port is available. Nice hardware, just a POS OS. I am curious to see what the update brings to WinMo on the HD2. It goes without saying that I am anxiously awaiting a 100% functional Droid ROM on this thing.

Have you tried installing Cookies Home Tab Editor on your HD2? It's free and makes a Winmo phone have the same functionality as Android with all of the icons, widgets, etc. Supports multiple pages of icons with a home screen just like Android, but also with the sweet Windows mobile stuff as well. Double the awesome. Check it out if you haven't.
WinMo is just a little more nerdy in terms of customization compared to the Iphone and Android. There is a lot to learn and if you aren't at least semi computer savvy and into nerding out on your phone (reading a lot), it's not the phone for you. I wouldn't recommend it for my 60 year old mom.
Mostly, Winmo phones aren't awesome out of the box usually. In terms of out of the box, the HD2 is the best winmo phone that I've seen. Sense is clean.
I have an HD2, Jailbroken Iphone and a Rooted G1 and have played with newer Android devices. The HD2 is by far, still the best. It just does more awesome stuff. You can customize anything on Winmo. ANYTHING.
I really like all three operating systems though. None of them suck.

hd2 vs mytouch slide?

i currently have the slide 3g that in theory i would really like to sell and pick up a newer vibrant or g2 but in reality i dont think anyone is gonna buy it
so i am left with a opportunity to trade for a hd2, but i am having my doubts
i know it can do both android and wm but it seems to have alot more quirky issues and i see alot of these phones for sale on craigslist.
so if the slide is updated as promised to 2.2 with sense, what would be other reasons to swap phones?????

Well the HD2 is much more powerful than the slide as far as specs are concerned, likewise the builds of Android it runs run much better than they do on the Slide. The HD2 has a bigger, higher resolution screen. And it runs WinMo.

I personally had the HD2, and once I switched over to the G2 I was amazed at what I missed out on. If you want hella features, keep the slide. If you want... a big screen.. Get the HD2 (or a Vibrant).

You would have access to everything your Android phone will do. You just have to find an Android build that works well for you. They aren't perfect yet, although it sounds like some are pretty close. Even cooler you can dual boot WinMo or Android... Best of both worlds really. Can't dual boot another OS on an Android phone, as far as I know...

I'm not trying to bash WinMo as I did like it, but what exactly does WinMo have on Android? Please enlighten me.

WinMo has, in my opinion, ease of expandability. IE, EVERYTHING about WinMo can be tweaked, moved, removed, or just plain changed in some way, all right out of the box, no convolutated(or in the case of the G2, temporary) rooting process required. WinMo has a better corporate install base of course. WinMo being a derivative of Windows of course, makes it so that alot of Windows programs have a WinMo port, the best of which being emulators. The emulator scene on WinMo is just phenominal. Give me time, i've got more.

the only short experience with windows mobile was with a tmobile Dash
and in my opinion was horrible as well as very difficult to navigate and deal with. however that may have been a earlier version of that software.
android seems to have the capability of being "tweaked, moved, removed, or just plain changed in some was," just like wm software just a bit different i guess it comes down to how much time you want to learn a new thing.

i just want to make sure that the andriod phone i have now can be duplicated in the hd2 phone, and im not loosing out on the features i have now such as sense and andriod market and some of the google apps

For the most part yeah, you will be getting if not the same experience running Android on the HD2 that you would on the slide, but prolly a better one because of the superior hardware. Most if not all Android builds for the HD2 feature the Market and Google apps built in.

Did I say that it had something on Android? I was saying that it can run Android and access the market, etc. Plus you can dual boot it with WinMo.
WinMo with Sense and CHT is pretty awesome in my opinion... More dumb apps or games would be the only thing that I can even think of that Android has over WinMo. I'm not really into games and stupid apps that I don't need. My HD2 does everything that I need it to do.
WinMo is super solid for business and everyday use. Having that with an Android dual boot is even better... Best of both worlds is better than only having an Android option IMHO. I'm into nerding out, so I find WinMo satisfies my geekyness. Flashing ROM's, Radios and doing tweaks are fun.

I admit I loved flashing ROM's, radios, tweaking. But it was just too plain for me, no apps, not much social networking. I'll admit it is perfect for a businessperson, but for me, and my priorities, Android successfully satisfied me. I know that it could have been dual booted, but running off a SD Card was kind of iffy to me. WinMo has the customization down, but no apps. Android has apps, and some customization. It just goes down to personal preference I guess. I mean I loved both devices, but Android just suited me better. Plus I like my real keyboard haha.

I've been eyeing the G2 and thinking about pickup up one for sure... Right now I've got the HD2 and an Iphone 2G 16GB. I gave my old G1 to my girlfriend. I agree that running Android off of the SD Card isn't my first choice, but I think it's OK... I only want a G2 because I'm a total phone nerd and like to have new stuff. Probably end up with a W7 phone eventually too.

I used to be a proud owner of an HTC HD, which I recently sold, and now I am wondering what to buy next. The next phone I would like to own is a phone running Android and I know that HTC HD2 is capable of that. What my question is, if there is a significant difference in the performance between same hardware Android phones and the Android on HTC HD2. In other words, is it worth buying the HTC HD2 for use as an Android phone, or should I pay a little more money and buy a Desire for example. I would also like to know if 3D games are playable on Android on the HTC HD2 (as they werent on the HD, lagged like hell). Thanks in advance

Don't buy an HD2, buy an android phone instead.

well you will probably end up rooting any phone you get anyway apparently. Games have been flawless on my HD2, including a pretty heavy game like heavy gunner 3d. not 1 single bit of lag. But unless you can find an hd2 dirt cheap I'd get the new nexus s

I know that it is not a ROM yet, is it like the one on the HTC HD (running Haret and its on the SD card) or is it something better? I read of some "Android Builds" but I don't really know the difference. Also will there ever be a Android ROM for the HD2 ?

my advice is if you have money to invest, buy either Desire HD or Nexus S. As much as smooth android runs on HD2, it is still can't be compared to a native android phone, the biggest problem being the battery drain. in standby it is alright, but when you use it it drains a lot.

I use Android on the HD2 because it's the one Tmo USA 3G capable phones hardware that I like that runs Android. I have/had Samsung Vibrant and prefer the HD2 hardware. I'm not a fan of the bulky G2. I like the 4.3" screen, and will not go back to using anything less than 4". I have not tried a MyTouch 4G because it doesn't offer anything compelling to draw me away from the HD2. But I have android running perfectly on my HD2, and it did take a bit of tinkering to get it running the way I want (Some SD cards work better than others, getting the build running, etc). Day to day it's every bit as good (and faster) than my Vibrant. There are a few minor quirks. Like having to unmount the card to install come applications from the marketplace. But, other than boot time there really isn't much advantage going to a phone that comes with Android.

It's nowhere near completion and I dont think it'll ever will. Even the blackstone like u said (which has been out for what 2yrs now?) still can't run android natively so you can kiss goodbye the possibility of android running on NAND anywhere in the distant future. It's a nice novelty idea to play around with if you already have an HD2 or familiar with the constant struggle that current developers are facing, but for everyday use, I'd say you're better off getting a pure android phone...much more efficient than what the HD2 can deliver on crutches.

Yeah, if you want to run android, you'll be better off getting a native android phone. Why buy a phone to run a port of android when you can get a phone that was made to run it.
Now if you also want to run winmo and don't mind putting in a lot of time testing out different android builds and working out bugs and quirks of a ported android, then the hd2 is a good phone... but don't expect it to run as well as a native android phone.

Yes it's taking time because there has been lot's of updates in android going on... and the developers has to keep up with those updates , hence it seems endless... but still HD2 is hell lot of device. and it can't be compared to native android devices....

I think you missed the whole point of what was said...

Well actually, the only thing I'd like to use Android for is the Games. I'm okay with using WinMo the other time (for browsing the net, watching movies. etc.). So I guess thats possible. Also why not buy an Android phone you ask? Well, cause the 4.3 inch Android phones are a hell of a lot more expensive. And one more thing, the HTC HD Blackstone didn't get a full Android ROM because all of the developers migrated to the HTC HD2 Leo.

So basically the only thing going for you are the 4.3in screen and the fact that it's cheaper than android phones in that price range? I don't know about a 4.3in but most samsung galaxy S line are about $150 with a 2yr contract and you can probably find an X10 for pennies. Unless you REALLLYYY want to dual boot winmo and android, I don't see why anyone would waste their time, money and energy and would get the HD2 just for running android to play games...don't you think that's a little ass-backward? Why would anyone want a winmo phone, running haret on SD card, booting android...just to play android games? hahaha

If you want android for gaming, I would get something from the Samsung galaxy line... it has a much better gpu, which isn't currently being taken advantage of by apps and games, but since Google's new development phone, the nexus s, is basicly a galaxy phone and has same chipset, future development and games will surely take advantage of it. Basicly, android developers and Google are going to use the nexus s as the standard to develop for like they currently use the nexus one... so many more games will be designed based around the chipset the nexus s and all the galaxy s line of phones use.

I can find one reason. HD2 i very good phone, but if i would like to get just phone i would use Nokia E51 or something similar... I like to play with my device, its kind of toy and HD2 has excellent dev community. Going back to original question. If you want just working device with Android buy something with Android installed natively, but if you don't mind or, like me, like playing with your phone HD2 is very good choice.

Well, I never use WinMo any more.
Android has everything I need.
And it is fast and I seldom experience bugs.
The only real downside is that you really have to be a power user. I spent a lot of hours updating and tweaking. But, then again, I love that
I agree that the HD2 is a nice device. The build quality is extraordinary.
I have had a look at both Desire HD and HD7 -- none of them have as good build quality. Samsung and SE always felt plastic-ish.
If you get a HD2 cheap today - sure, try it out.
But if I were to buy a new phone today - I would probably buy a native Android.

Alright so I thought id give my two cents. I've owned a nexus one and a galaxy s as far as Android phones go. I went back to the hd2 for a couple of reasons. First off, its a lot cheaper than any other phone with comparable hardware. Look on Craigslist Nd you can find a new hd2 for like $200. I like the screen better than the samoled

Didn't finish, lol. Anyways, the amoled screens aren't as clear as the lcd on the hd2. The colors and contrast of the amoled screens were amazing but I didn't like how you could see pixels. Second, the hd2 has so many roms, even more than the nexus one. And finally, from my experience, the hd2 has been a lot faster than either of those phones. I'm running a desire hd Rom and the quadrant score is higher than either of the phones I mentioned, even after I modded them. Last thing ill say is battery life is definitely not a big problem. Id get about 1 hour more with the nexus one or galaxy than my hd2 with Android. I can easily go 10+ hours on pretty heavy use. Turn internet off and you can go way way longer. So battery life with Android running off an SD card is fine. Oh last thing, changing builds is so easy, just copy a new build on your phone and that's it. So get an hd2. Won't regret it.
