Hi folks,
I'm a developer at Facebook on the Android team. First off, thanks for bringing this to our attention. We have identified the bug that is causing this battery drain and are working on a fix now. As soon as the patch is ready, we'll push out an update. Thanks for the quick feedback and for your patience as we get this fixed!
Thanks,
David

Ahh, good to know that official..
Good news. Looks like the fix is out version 1.3.1
I just downloaded it. Hopefully I'll have better battery life tomorrow.
Holy crap. Is that what is happening to my battery the last few days. ..
My battery had been exceptionally terrible the last 2 days as well
Noticed version 1.3.1 is out now
Update and save those batteries
I had backed up my last copy of FB. Now that the developers noticed the issue and released and update, so will I. Coo'
This may be an obvious answer, but how do we update the facebook app that's installed with the os?

New update is still sucking my battery. Anyone got a link to the old version?
Edit: nevermind, you can just uninstall the updates by doing it in the market.
I wonder why some people have this problem and others don't. My friends sees the problem on his Incredible, but I don't see any drain on my N1.

Do you have the widget on the home screen? Otherwise check about phone, battery info, what's been using the battery and if android os is real high, then Facebook is probably preventing the phone from sleeping.

I havent had any problems with the new update, but then again, my facebook 'sync' options have never been enabled. I think today facebook updated itself again
I don't do anything with Facebook, but I do have the updated app installed and logged in. About 30 friends, sync with contacts, and no battery drain at all. System panel shows only 5 seconds of CPU time used over the last 8 hours.
Well I skipped Facebook 1.3.0 and 1.3.1 because of the battery drain. Today installed 1.3.2 and in 53 minutes the Facebook app was good for 50 minutes of partial wake time.
(and this is with update notifications set to never, etc.)
Uninstalled....reverted back to 1.2 and now no more partial wake usage from the app!
Having installed 1.3.2 my partial wake time is only 14s since unplugged for Facebook. I've got it set to notify me for messages and friend requests, plus it syncs contacts already in the phone. That said never had issues on 1.3.1.
Does anyone has the version 1.2 apk saved somewhere ? I'm looking for it and I can't desinstall the updates unfortunately.
Thank you in advance!
Any hosting service would do the trick
I haven't had a single problem in a week out of Facebook, in fact only the first day of using 1.3.1.

Just downloaded update and seems lot closer now to look like the iPhone one. I don't use Facebook app much so anybody notice any major differences since last one?
yep.. it auto updated this morning for me.. and its much nicer feel to it.. also like the little photo slider at the bottom.
wish they would implement facebook chat though
Much better, only thing I miss is to see who liked smth, option to slide to next picture when viewing pictures(it is so stupid to me to touch next and previous button) and chat

FB chat through the AIM client seems to work fine for me. But yes, it would be nice if we didn't have to run another app alongside the proper FB one.
Has anyone tried syncing contacts through Facebook rather than Facebook for HTC Sense? Since this update I have two Facebook accounts in the Accounts and Sync settings. If I try to use the new one it doesn't seem to work. It offers a new contact link but doesn't have pictures or anything attached to it.

while we wait for them to put chat on the app in the mean time download go chat the ui is good it looks like google talk
I can't believe items in the notification menu still take you to the mobile version of the site in your browser and don't stay within the app.
Apart from that, I like it.
Partial Wake usage withe the new 1.3 client
Check the "Partial Wake Usage" (*#*#4636#*#*): with Facebook client 1.3, no contact sync and autoupdate on "never" i have 100% usage (on facebook app)
A definite improvement... wish they'd change the horrible icon though.

Yep, I've just uninstalled the update.
Would this be because of the 'new notification implementation'? I did, for the first time ever, actually receive a notification whilst I had it installed!
It's using way to much of the cpu, too bad since I really liked the update but I need to uninstall it aswell Battery is more important!
Do people think a fix will come out for this? Surely this is an error, it uses way too much battery!

It has to be some sort of unforeseen thing. I would hope to see an update to fix this soon.
Mind you, I'm not overly impressed with the new features- was expected something far bigger and better.
I just wished, they can have a widget like the one on iphone where it displays the notifications on a corner.

Thank god I now know why my phone as gone from 100% to 0% in the space of 6 hrs.
Thought it was the Froyo update but can see now it looks like it's this new update.
Has anybody emailed them yet to inform them of the excessive battery increase?
Yes I have already mailed the developer

I installed it when I first saw that the 1.3 was released and I haven't noticed any difference what so ever on my battery usage. I don't use any taskkiller so I haven't killed it of.
is there any fix for the battery-usage-of-death issue ?
Facebook update 1.5 just rolled out, and added chat and push notifcations. However, mine do not seem to be working.
If I heard correctly, froyo isn't supported, since its only 2.2+ that has cloud APK support. Not 100% sure though.
I am currently running CM6.1 on my Dinc, which is based on 2.2.1, so I'm wondering why this isn't working.

1. not working.
2. If its REAL PUSH, why do we see Time Interval settings ?

Other people have said that it is working for things like comments and messages, and I've even seen a few people with push working on evo and inc, so I'm confused why it seems so hit or miss with people's updates.
EDIT: Ok, yeah, push is working for chat. Hrumph. If that's all they added, this is pretty stupid.

+1, the whole app actually needs a good rewrite!
Push is working for comments, messages, chat on my DInc, so it must be hit or miss
Ya I got push working for everything, time interval settings has nothing to do with it. I've been getting replies wall posts everything instantly in the form of a notification and its really nice and usefull

it's working for me but killing my battery at the same time. I had it on to refresh everyhour apparently and Facebook has been running in the background for over 3 hours which keeps my phone awake.

Well, then it's looking like maybe its a CM6.1 specific thing, huh.. lame. :/
My Dinc, stock 2.2, is receiving some things via instant push and other things at the interval update. It's stupid because if it would just push everything, I could turn the email updates off but I can't figure out what is consistently pushing yet.

Nope. I'm running Redemptive Rev. 2.1.3 and all i'm getting for push noti's is chat. And one message, but ive had MANY facebook notifications since updating, and none of them have pushed to my phone. The dev's for FB for android need to redo that entire app, imo. Compared to iphone's fb app, its a joke.

ditto.....
I was getting notifications for everything: comments, messages, wall posts, chat, etc...that is until I rooted.
Same. On Cyan nightly 184. I'll get no notifications pushed, sign on via pc, and see 3 IM comversations. Irritating.
No notifications here either. It seems like chat rapes my battery too.
Facebook is wrecking my battery. There was no issue before I actually launched the application, but ever since, it's been keeping my phone awake.
My phone's been unplugged for 6 hours, running 36.1% of that, with the screen on for 6.4% of that. That's about 2 hours awake, and almost a half hour of screen time. According to spare parts, facebook has kept the phjone awake like 6 times as long as the next offender, Android system. The rest of the apps on the list are little slivers.
This is with Facebook Notifications turned off in settings, and I'm like 75% sure I had signed out of chat.
I hadn't changed the default number of backups in Titanium, so I only have one backup of Facebook, which is from like the day after the update came out. Can I just uninstall it? Or will **** hit the fan?
Actually anybody know where I can find an APK for the last update of facebook? That worked fine. If I uninstall updates and then install that APK over the version that came on my phone it should be fine. I froze it for now in Titanium.
EDIT: I was able to downgrade back to facebook 1.4. Go either the Market or Application Settings, go to facebook, and uninstall the updates. Then install this over the version taht came with your phone: http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/download/temp/1288808520_Facebook_for_Android_1.4.0.apk
I've been having the same problem. some days my battery is fine and other time Facebook suck it dry. if I'm signed out of chat too.. i dont get it

I also am having no luck with any type of push on my DINC not even the chat is working for me and the battery life sucks like everyone else says. Everyone needs to email the devs and give them a ear full!

What version of MIUI? I'm running 12.11.1 and I am only getting chat notifications. When I was running Uber DesireZ I would get notifications for everything.
I've been getting great battery life but then recently noticed that I hit 50% by lunch (when usually, I hit 50% by 10-11pm, after unplugging in the morning like everyone else).
Then, I noticed that FB was showing me notifications after installing it a few days ago. I tried to find a way to disable notifications in FB, but there is no such option, so is it basically running all the time in the background? Makes ya wonder what Zuckerberg is tracking in the background?
I'm uninstalling FB tonight and see if I can get back the awesome 1.5-2 day battery life I'm used to.
It does drain battery terribly but I don't think its because of notifications. I think the chat refusing to close is causing a partial wake issue. Download spare parts and Facebook is always running. Probably best to just use the site.
I never have any problems with the facebook app. You can disable notifications in the settings.
I cant really speak to the chat problem. I have been signed out of chat since that feature was added.
So if you are having issues, try disabling notifications and signing out of chat. See if that makes any difference.

Cool, I'll put FB back on after a few days and try those suggestions. I wanna make sure that it was the culprit in my poor battery life.
I just left a comment for them about this in the Market. I'm also going to install it back again and uninstall it from the Market and mark it as Defective, so they get a second hint.

It's for sure the chat....just make sure you stay signed out of it and you wont have the drain issues.
I dropped the FB sync settings down to once or twice a day and that was a huge help on battery life. I don't use the widget, so instant status updates have no value to me and this allows the profile pics to stay relatively up to date.
I noticed the widget causing the most battery drain.
I think i will stick to the site.
New version of the Facebook app just came out. Version 1.5.1 if i recall. Might help those of you having battery drain issues.

I have read a number of posts where some are experiencing severe drain like me and others that are not. I have tried KE2, KG3, KG6 and now KG5 all have been the same as soon as push is enabled on my work email exchange account with the stock email app, there is an immediate drop in the battery graph and the phone heats up, with the awake time showing as almost constant even when screen is off.
This drains my battery at around 10%/hr whereas with sync set to manual, I am only getting a drain of up to 1%/hr. Problem is I want to use push!
So, anyone who is not experiencing this - what is the trick?
Or will we see this addrerssed at all, but so far loads of updated firmware and still this problem exists with me.
You can't have everything at a time dude. Give up good back up if you need Push, or give up push to have the opposite
I'm having the same issue. Give up the Push? Come on now. As far as i understand we paid big bucks for this phone and want all the features to work properly. This is stock option and a must for everyone, how good is the phone when you cant have push email in this day and age. This is first android (SGS2) i'm having 2nd thoughts about samsung.

Sorry, but that's completely false.
I have exchange sync on PUSH and gmail on PUSH. Always had it on push, since my Nexus One.
Battery drain is very very minimal.
For example with my SGS2 running Cognition 1.31 I just got around almost 40 hours with light use. That's with Bluetooth and Wifi on for most of that time.
If your email push is eating the battery... try to reinstall the Email.apk to one of the other ones floating around here (for example I use one from 2.3.4 with exchange security bypassed). No battery drain that I'd ever notice, and I get decent amount of emails through the day.
Remember that you have to reinstall by deleting/replacing Email.apk in system/apps (need root).
I've always hated the stock email client. Pony up for Moxier Mail. You'll definitely be glad you did. I have push scheduled for 10hours a day and I drop 2-3% an hour. An hour after I get off work it switches to manual poll. Also limit the number of folders you're pushing if that's possible in the mail app.

There is on the stock email app but not on the GMail one as far as I know. Even the timed sync seems to be causing me issues though. Very disappointed in this aspect.

Dude, seriously, try to root/delete Email.apk.
Get one of the other versions from xda, install that one.
Reboot, see if it works.
If nothing helps, just install Cognition.

I may try that then - havent come across the email.apk but then again havent tried searching yet. Is there a guide on how to replace the apk after rooting (need to do that as well, but already researched that)
Thanks for the advice.
Experiencing same problems as OP!
Have had a bunch of Android phones, and no other has this problem.
I've tried Stock mail, patched stock mail, patched AOSP mail and Enhanced Email.. They all give too much wakelock. Use BetterBatteryStats (charmonix) to catch your wakelocks.
Everyone,
just thought I would share this with you. I had discovered a problem in the native Email app with Exchange ActiveSync account. If a connection was lost a battery drain occurred which did not stop unless you killed the service, restarted your phone or put the connection back (a partial wake lock was not released in the sync service).
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9307
I have been in discussions with Google developers about this for a long time and they were not able to find or track down the bug. I managed then to compile the Email app myself, debug it, find the problem and fix it.
Google finally confirmed the bug...
You can see the symptoms explained in post #77.
At the end of the issue you can see my analysis and how the code was fixed.
Anyway, find the latest Email app below so you can download it.
The Email app version is 2.3.5r1 (latest Git repository version of Gingerbread 2.3.5r1)
The changes done
- Fixed battery drain (wake lock released properly)
- Calendar synchronization syncs all historic events (not only 14 days old and newer)
Installation notes
Since Email app is a system application you cannot just install it and replace the old one. The only way is to have a rooted phone and delete the old /system/app/email.apk (make a backup of course).
Reboot your phone and then install the new Email.apk. It is suggested to remove the accounts first otherwise you can get a FC.
That's great work Jacob!
This bug should exist on all gingerbread roms, no?
Should I just installed it or replace the original one with root explorer?
Can not synchronize ALL messages, maximum period is month!

Yes, a standard behavior of the Email app. I could bypass that too if you need. It's a shame that both Calendar and Email period of sync cannot be setup properly (whatever the user might desire)
Great news, thank you very much!!!
Will definitely test this evening .
Yes, ability to sync all mail would be nice, too, if it's not a problem for you .
This is great, good job.
I experimented the same issue and noone seemed to believe me. Well done.
EDIT: btw im a galaxy s cyanogen mod user, maybe you could post this in a more general forum
I'm not knowledgeable about these things, but how would someone go about getting this fix implemented into CM7? I'm also a Galaxy S CM7 user who has suffered from this issue and I've had to resort to using Moxier Mail as a remedy. If I install this fixed .apk, will it just get overwritten once I flash the next CM7 nightly? It would be great if it could be integrated into CM7.
Works very well on Samsung GalaxyS-CM7, thanks a lot!
One question though, the maximum sync period is one month, whereas in the CM7 client it can be set to unlimited (for email at least).
I also made a zip-file to flash this new email.apk. Made for galaxy S CM7, but I guess it should work on any CM7...
3h ago exchanged Email.apk and so far good. Switching to Flight produces 2mA drain. Synchronizing corporate mail and Contacts/Calendar works normally with no issues so far .
niiiiiceeeeee!!!!
but is there any way to get the app skaled when changing the devices-density???
it's been workin' with this one:

thx in advance...
Hi jakubklos,
I'm using airplain mode every night when I go to sleep and being aware of this annoying bug I usually kills the EMail app and stops all it syncs.
From now I can go to sleep knowing I won't be losing 10% or more of my battery while sleeping.
You're great man!
BTW, Beats me what takes Google so much time to fix it themselves.
genius, thanks jakubklos
Is this the same email app for sense roms or is it only ASOP that is effected by this issue?
Also, Way to go on showing google up!
