[Q] Where Do I Go From Here??? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I have been scouring these forums and Google for the last 2 hours and can't seem to find clear direction...
So I tried following a guide to root my MyTouch 3G, and of course it didn't work.
Here is my phone information:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0006 (SAPP30000)
CPLD-10
RADIO- 2.22.19.26I
The issue I am running into now, is that I am stuck on the ANDROID SETUP screen and my phone will NOT connect over Data. It is a Data-enabled SIM and worked 2 hours ago!
I figure my next step is to create a Goldcard and flash it properly, but I dont know how to get the CID code I need for the card...
Am I stepping in the right direction? Or totally wrong? haha
I also wanted to add, that it SEEMS to flash the stock ROM perfectly fine (well, it says OK after each segment) and the phone boots in fine, if I tried flashing a ROM that had "Setup Android Via WIFI" on it would it work?
I am scared to try anything else for fear I will take it to far...

Suppose I forgot to mention, it is an Original MyTouch 3G.
Does NOT have the 3mm jack

Which guide did you follow to root it? Do you have a custom recovery image loaded on? Have you called T-Mobile to confirm there's no issues with your phone in their system or their network near you?

I was following this guide:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-root-the-htc-mytouch-3g/
I know, I know, I was stupid for ignoring the Goldcard stuff in EVERY other guide.
Haven't tried loading custom recoveries, don't know if it would do anything else or not.
I have not called T-mobile, however it STILL isnt working, so thats like 6+ hours of outage, I kind of doubt that... Tried using EGDE connection too (I know that is working) and same issue.

Your going to have to use the GoldCard method since you've got a perfected SPL. Your data problem still could be something within T-Mobile's network. I would hit them up while your making your GoldCard, just to make sure everything is as it's suppose to be.

Well thats the issue... HOW do I get my CID if I cannot get past the SETUP ANDROID screen?
I think it will have to wait till tomorrow (so I can use a friend's phone)
Or is there a different way?

No, using a friend's phone to my knowledge would be your best bet. Unless you have a Windows Mobile phone laying around. I'm still looking around. Do you have a SD card reader and is not a USB adapter?

No WinMo phones, saw that I could do it with that...
The reason I got the MyTouch is because my TP2 took a swim. haha (Was a little more concerned with the $30,000 boat washing on shore than the phone)
I am using the reader built into my laptop... Otherwise I have the one on my printer... (using a SD-card-adapter) for it.

Thought I found something but nevermind. Guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Did you try it???
I need to install Visual Studio to compile it, but if you tried it and it didnt work then I wont bother.

No, didn't try it as I don't have Visual plus the internet in the cabin I've got rented just crapped out.

Holy hell... a lot of work

Alright, I have an HTC Magic which essentially acts as my backup phone since I have a Desire. I figured I would try my hand out at flashing a rom on the Magic. Am I missing something, because it seems like a LOT of work. For something that people make out to be so simple, it sure is a pain. Every step I take, I run into issues. At this point I need to:
- Make a Goldcard. (Actually done, I think...?)
- "Fix" my SPL as it's "perfected.
- Update the Radio since the "fix" will apparently mess it up.
- Update the recovery using a customer recovery image.
- Then maybe flash a ROM to it and hope it works.
Am I missing something...or is this WAY more work then people make it out to be. Looking through the forums before starting this... people made it seem like all you had to do was make a Goldcare, copy the rom .zip to it, and use the fastboot method to flash it. I have flashed ROMs on WinMo several times, and it's never been nearly this much run around...even when things mess up. I thought doing this on Android was easier then on WinMo...
So... am I missing something? Is there an easier way that doesn't involve all this run around? Even so, hopefully I have almost everything I need at this point. Is there anything else I am going to run into that is going to cause a need for even MORE work? Any tips here? Thanks.
UPDATE: On trying to flash the SPL "fix" it goes through the installation then tells me that the CID is incorrect. I have tried it 4 or 5 times, using two different cards. It shouldn't be wrong. Any help? Don't understand why it keeps telling me the CID is incorrect. I have noticed though, for some reason, every time I restart the Magic, it gives me a different number when trying to get the CID. Is there a way to bypass this? Have been trying for 4 hours and have gotten no where at all...

I guess that I should be moving this to General since this is a Q&A and not a means to simplify what you are trying to accomplish.

Wow, do I know how you feel.... I recently got a Vibrant (galaxy s). So sine I got a new phone I unrooted my MT3g and sent it in on warranty since it was kinda scratched, so I can give it to my wife. Well with my first phone I was able to do the on click root since it came originally loaded with cupcake.... Well as it turns out if it comes pre loaded with donut you can't downgrade any more...lol So I had to do the gold card method.....it sucked.....
I can't even get stuff to work with the Goldcard. It keeps telling me the CID is incorrect... which it may be, since it gives me a new number every time I restart the damned thing. It can't be this hard to root all Android devices I hope... this is just ridiculous.

No, its not.... A good example is to root the vibrant you just flash a update.zip file...lol. But the sapphire/magic/mytouch is a great phone with allot of development support. But from what I understand one of the hardest roots..
Well that sucks. Kinda wanted to see how Froyo would run on it, and wanted to get a feel of how it was done before attempting it on the Desire. How did you manage to get the thing flashed?

the CID error tells me your gold card creation failed.
Check the process description at theunlockr.com. that worked for me.
My first mistake was formatting FAT and NOT FAT32. It must be formatted FAT32.
I used a 2GB PNY and it works great.
yes, our phone (the sapphire, magic, MT3G, whatever the carrier calls it) is one of the craziest to root. I have the 1.2 version that came out after the fender, so by default i need to do the goldcard method. I made the goldcard, but then my daughter dropped my phone, and i had to get it replaced, someone is currently borrowing my card reader, so i have to wait to root the new one.
one step from reading the forums that alot of people miss, is replacing the first two digits of the "gold card id" to 00.. you have to do this, or the thing wont work. at least if you're having issues on the gold card step you're not close enough to the steps that can BRICK your phone...
all i can say is make sure you follow the directions STEP BY STEP, i've seen a number of people who flash the wrong image first and it totally bricks the phone. in my case that would suck, as being on the non-contract plan, i get no discount for new phones.
hope that helps a little.
Yes, the zeros are critical but as I recall theunlockr link above (paste and cut) takes care of that for you. The gold card is the hard part to get right.. The rest is very straightforward.
Thanks for the input guys. Going to try a few more things.
Alright. Following the instructions. Step by step, I am still getting "CID Incorrect! Update Fail!"
This is very frustrating as there isn't any reason it shouldn't be working...

Not to thread jack, you know you can use any GoldCard with any phone, as long as it was made properly.
Any ideas on why this one isn't working then? Saying "Incorrect CID" when I try to flash anything with it.
Not sure. I know it took me 3 tries to get mine working right.

[Q] Removed SDCard Fixes?

I have an issue I have been trying to figure out on my own. I have scoured the interwebs searching for a solution and every time I think I've found one, it ends up being a road-block. I'd like to be able to post a fix for other people in various forums if I can find a way around it. So here's my story...
So a week ago a rooted my phone, I used Universal Androot and the Rom Manager, my phone was perfect with the multi touch, pinch zoom and other goodies...then I got greedy. I started seeing Hero Roms flying around the web, I wanted one. In this process I nearly bricked my phone, so I decided to put a stock rom back on it. My intention was to re-root and just leave cyanogenmod on my phone.
The problem is...dun dun dun, the dreaded Removed SD Card error. Now my SD Card only reads in hboot. Something during the OS loading disables my SDCard. I have been sitting at my computer for almost the last 48 hrs trying to find a way to fix it, because phone is semi-useless without it. Here is what I have tried:
1 fastboot -c board.sapphire disable_sdcard=0;
This gives me an ok and finish status but appears to have done jack once OS is loaded
2 fastboot oem enableqxdm 0;
this is not working because I have the dreaded perfected SPL
3 I have tried the [How-to]Fix Perfected SPL;
all of the SAPPIMGs give me incorrect Model IDs
4 I have tried re-downloading stock ROMs in case it was corrupted, nada.
I have been trying to find a way to flash the SPL without an SDCard and it doesn't seem possible...
Phone Info:
Sapphire PVT 32A Ship S-On G
HBOOT-1.33.0013 (SAPP31000)
CPLD-13
RADIO-2.22.23.02
It's the US MT3G 3.5MM.
I'd like to be able to help other people with this same problem, with credit to the person(s) involved in stomping out this fire.
Thank you to all constructive posts, let us get one step closer to ruling our phones.
Sound like the problem that I had. Different phone (mines a Rogers Magic) but same issue.
I ended up having to install the offical Rogers rom with the RUU.exe and then use the fastboot oem enableqxdm 0 command. Then I could re-root and do what ever I wanted.
My thread is here
Any particular mode the phone should be in for RUU Rom to read it? Sorry for the newbie questions but I really would like to enhance my knowledge.
DO NOT DO THAT!!!!! Where did you get the sappimg to return your phone to stock? What ROM are you currently on?
I got the ROM from Shipped Roms, it's a stock rom. I'D LOVE to be able to flash an SPL without the sdcard so that I could enableqxdm 0 the card reader back into exitence. I am down for trying all options.
The phone is rooted, via a file manager I have access to the system files if that helps at all... is it possible to edit init files and put them back on the phone? would that help?
The thing is, you can't use an RUU like the other guy did to get an engineering SPL loaded, you'll have to use the goldcard method to do that with your phone. As for the sappimg, there's about probably about 30 different images you can get from that thread. Which one did you download specifically? If you didn't get the 2.10.531.4, then you grabbed the wrong one. You can get the right one from here and flash it from hboot. I would try that before going the goldcard route.

Have you checked to see if your getting the SD card mount issue from recovery?
Yeah sorry I didn't mean for you to copy what I did as mine is a rogers Magic and things are different for your phone.
I was just indicating how I had to fix my phone.
Hey Don, Yea I got the 2.10.531.4, from S-R.com, its initially how I saved the almost brick, and the stock recovery does give me a E:\cant mount SDCARD.
Part of me thinks the rom ".4" has some kind sdcard block...
And I am unable to get the CID for my phone without the phone reading the sdcard, it's like walking a maze, I get close to what I think is figuring it out, but no luck yet, and I would love to be able to cross post a fix to other forums with people that arent having luck with fixing this issue.
That's easy, your CID is T-MOB010. The ".4" does have an SD card block as I've used it several times in the past. That's the shipped ROM for the myTouch 1.2. I would start by reloading the sappimg.zip from the link I provided. It's probably not going to make a difference, but is about the easiest double-check to do. The other option is to use the "old school" rooting method in my signature to get an engineering SPL loaded and then trying the two fastboot commands you tried before. I imagine the first command appeared to go through but in reality, didn't, similar to trying to run the "fastboot boot" command on a perfected SPL.
Will do. Will report back with results soon

looking at the unlockr's site the CID comes up as a large string of numbers, where does T-MOB010 come into play?

There's two different CIDs. The one you get for the goldcard is specific to the SD card. You also have a Customer ID which is particular to the mobile company your phone is locked to. The one I provided is the CustomerID.

I rooted my Mytouch 3G 1.2 and have routinely upgraded the CM roms as they were released with no problems. I went to unroot the thing so i could sell it on ebay, but ran into problems. Currently it will load into Hboot, but will hang while unzipping system files. It appears to go into Fastboot, but I can't get a computer (fastboot commander or command prompt) to communicate with it. It shows fastboot and changes to Fastboot USB when connected to a computer, but that's all I get. I've tried various drivers and sappimg files. I have read that if it shows any signs of life then it can be saved. I have searched for hours trying to find solutions but haven't made any progress. Current Fastboot screen shows Sapphire RE Unknown 32A Eng S-Off H

That sounds about right Kevin and DonJuan. I've got a new baby and my attention to detail and directions isn't what it should be right now
I found that part of the problem I was having was with my wretched Vista laptop and a driver issue. When working on my XP desktop I can see the device in fastboot devices. I do have the headphone jack and realized that I do have the wrong radio. I think I'm sort of lost as to where my phone exists right now in the process of unrooting.
Thank you both for your fast replies.
Use the "Old school" rooting guide in my signature starting at Step #4. That will put you back on CM. I would leave it rooted to sell it unless you've got a buyer requesting for it to be stock as you may pull more interest. If your dead set on going back stock, you should be able to stop at Step #9 in the guide, turn the phone off, download this file, rename it to "sappimg.zip", put it on the root of your SD card, with it in the phone, turn it on holding volume down+power, and then follow the instructions on screen.
Awesome, I'm in Amon-Ra's recovery. Can I use it to restore a clockworkmod backup or are the two recovery methods incompatible? I guess part of my question should be whether my phone is technically rooted or unrooted at this point. Could I load a recovery from step nine of your guide and be done with it?
I tried using the stock img that you linked to (because I see stock MyTouch phones on eBay selling more often than rooted ones) but it gave me the Main version is older" message which is what got me started down this road in the first place. At this point, if I could get back to my backed up CM6.1 I would call it good.
P.S. I really appreciate your time and will donate.
If I'm not mistaken both recoveries use the nandroid backup. Just try restoring and see if it'll take. If not then you may just end up having to re-flash it. So what you were actually trying to do is flash the engineering SPL to bypass the version check. You flashed an entire sappimg which changes pretty much everything. Instead you should have used the engineering ZIP that's floating around which you would have flashed from recovery and it would've only changed the SPL.
I got everything back to where I started with your guidance. I guess you were right DonJuan, my CM6.1 MyTouch sold within 30 minutes on ebay for $125. Thanks again.

G2 blank screen

So my phone just died on me today. It's turned on, but the screen is blank. I can't see anything, the signs on the bottom (home, menu, back, search) area all bright, but pressing them doesn't help either. I've pulled out the battery the sim etc, but nothing. It'll ring if somebody calls/texts/emails but I won't know who the caller is. I can't even pick up the phone unless I've the original headphone on (by pressing the play button) and ofcourse can't make any phone calls either.
I live in Canada, and can't return it to Tmobile, since I bought it used from USA this year. This phone was bought in Oct last year by original owner so still under htc warranty.
I called htc today and they took down my address and credit card number and asked me to ship the phone to them since it's still under warranty. However I rooted this phone with s-off back in January, so I'm not sure if they'll find out. If they do they will charge me up to $39 for diagnosing the problem.
I tried going to recovery mode by holding volume down button and pressing power, but still blank screen. Is there anyway to un root it?
Do you guys think I should send it in for repair/exchange? Any advice on this will be appreciated. Thanks

If you can't fix it brick it for sure.
I'm gonna assume the phone is still working and able to access h boot and u just can't see the screen
Before you do this I recommend you to do everything you can to fix it.
Did you flash the hboot engineer?
Can you connect to your comp and access fastboot?
If you can't...welll then if I were u ill put a radio on sd card name it pc10img then click voulme up(assuming its flashing radio) (in hboot btw). Then pull out the battery to brick it completely.
well that's just my opinion

How can I put a radio on sd card when I can't access the drive? Is there a way to do it? And last, how does bricking it completely helps? Thanks
Does anybody know if it's a problem with the screen or something to do with the software? I've been able to hear the beeps while dialing random numbers after pressing talk/dial number (not that I could see what I was pressing), so I'm guessing it's the screen, but not sure.
Can somebody tell me using their G2 that after you connect it to your computer, approximately how low on the screen is the option to access the memory/phone drive? I remember that the first option was "Charge only" but can't remember the rest of them and their order.

Because they might check the phone for possible rooting and etc. And by completely bricking the phone they can't check if you rooted the phone or not and its caused by running custom romm

Well first to see if you can still fix the phone download sdk. and install it.
Then download the proper drivers for your phone. If your too lazy just go to htc website and download htc sync. It will download the drivers.
Next I'm guessing you didn't flash the hboot engineer?
Its in android develop section rooting thread. Gscrpit no adb needed something like that.
Idk if fastboot will still work or not though if yoh didn't flash the hboot engineer, I'm not sure x.x
You can still try. After install all the proper drivers and everything.
Now pull out battery to make sure ur phone is off. Put it back in click volume down and power button. Plug it in to computer
Open up adb and type in adb devices. If you get serial numbers of your phone then u can flash other rom using adb.
If not then well...its bricked.
put ur sd card on other phone or use sdcard adapter to move the radio on your sd card then put it back in your phone
Let me know if you need any help

Because they might check the phone for possible rooting and etc. And by completely bricking the phone they can't check if you rooted the phone or not and its caused by running custom romm

Are you absolutely sure about that? Because, if that's true then I'll might as well brick it if I'm unable to fix it.

Thanks for all your input.
I got the SDK from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
And then I also downloaded the htc sync.
However, I tried to search "Gscrpit no adb needed" but couldn't find anything.
In the link i posted above, there are two methods for installing ADB on windows, one is complete (seems very complicated) and other one is Quick way (without ADB). Does it matter which one I choose? I'm guessing the purpose of installing ABD on computer is to install a new rom in it, am I correct?

But if it's completely bricked, then how come I can still receive phone calls using my htc head phone? Also I thought bricking usually happens during the process of rooting the phone, however, this phone was rooted 4 months ago and had been working fine since then.
Edited!!!!!!!!!
Good news. I figured it out and ran adb and I'm able to see my device. Now big question how do I flash a new ROM or the stock ROM using ADB?

Cause ur phone wasn't bricked completely I was saying that if you were unable to fix it you might as well brick it completely.

Phone Bricked?

I have a stock myTouch 3G 32B that won't progress past the initial login screen. I have taken pictures of the different screen/areas that I can get to. I have tried multiple SIM cards at no avail. Any help appreciated! Thanks!!
That is not a brick. Not even close to being a brick. Imagine this, you try to turn your phone on and you're greeted with the old familiar splash screen, but it stays like that, nothing happens, you start to worry and decide to boot into recovery, same thing happens, you freak out and try fastboot, same result. That's a brick. That doesn't happen to too many people, but when it does, its effing scary.
Now onto your problem. Are you sure the Sims you tried had working data? Did you try them in another phone to verify?
Thanks tvall ... I guess I should have used a different word that bricked since I know a true brick is completely non functional. This phone however is completely useless at this state though. :-(
As for the SIM cards, they were taken out of my HD2 (running Android), my wifes HD2 (also Android), Samsung Vibrant, and then a dumb phone. All the smart phones have data plans and work when their proper SIM cards are installed.
Well the phone suggested to call customer care, and it is a SMARTphone. Try taking its advice?
What I do when I have major problems is flash a sappimg and start over. (That is also the only times my phone runs stock software. I rooted on day one and flashed cm haven't gone back to stock)
Maybe, if your ok with root, do the goldcard rooting process and see if a custom rom can get data?
The phone was purchased used off craigslist ... wasn't sure if that would come up or matter if customer care was called. The whole point of this is that I was hoping to root and get a custom rom on there (trying to fix up for my niece to use). The problem is though that I don't think that I can root without a goldcard and I can't create a gold card without getting into the settings page and getting info about the phone (right?). If there is a way to do any of this using ADB or any other method I am all ears.
Also you said something about flashing a sappimg and starting over ... can I do this without the phone being rooted? It is 100% stock AFAIK.

I was thinking that the gold card that is used to root the phone would have to be made with that phone as well. So I can use my G1 to make a goldcard that I can use to root this myTouch3G?

Yep. Goldcards are not phone specific
Thanks! I have never seen anything saying that in all of my research. I would have never figured that out on my own. I will create a gold card with my G1 when I get home from work and root that myTouch with it.
Thanks again!
