I think they are making a big mistake taking this stance on root & custom roms.

Maybe they should stop with Android then. The platform is all about being open. I lost all interest in this phone when this was confirmed.

the rooting/modding/flashing community is maybe at most 10-15% of users, and that's being super generous
most people will not even read that announcement, and if they do, most will have no idea what it means

i can only completely agree with that! i wanted it but now i ordered a galaxy S...screw you motorola!
Modders may only be a very small portion of their user base. But I'll tell everyone who ask to avoid the whole Moto line of phones. And being a Computer Guy I get asked a lot.
I too have posted my feelings on a couple of other boards. Even on my facebook. Android is open source and it is my understanding that Gingerbread is actually aiming at getting rid of overlays like Sense and Blur. Good for Google.
This wasn't even a fully open admission from Motorola. From what I understand the eFuse thing was found BY modders...and not explained by Motorola. That is down right devious.
I was seriously on the fence about this phone...been driving my friends nuts with comparisons between Evo and Droid X. Was going to have both of them in 30 day period to compare side by side for a week...
...now...I love my Evolina more and she is the phone for me. Canceling my spot on the waiting list.
Its really just a stop gap phone until we see a 4.3" HTC device or other super phone with more features. I can live without custom roms and root access on this phone for 6 months.

I'd say it much smaller than that. There also seems to be a lot of die hard ROM flashing types buying the phone anyways
I dislike the encrypted boot loader, but not enough to not buy the phone. I am assuming we will manage to get root access. And with that we can do a lot.
Only time will tell how big an issue the bootloader ends up being.
Coming from an htc eris to droid 2 about a week ago now. And man these boards are QUIET compared to the eris's android development. Is this due to motorolas encryption skills or people just dont have this phone. Or maybe perhaps they just dont care?
Can anyone shed some light on this please?
It is from all the reasons you listed, many people don't have the phone because they chose the X over the droid 2 and the locked bootloader discourages developers from doing anything, I think motorola is making a wrong move in the market personally because less people is going to buy the phone because there are slim developing oppertunities

I would say it is the lock bootloader. I am guessing that lots of people did not upgrade to Droid2 from Original Droid cause of the bootloader. I would still be on the OD if I dod not receive the D2 as a gift and would have not got it for myself because of the lock bootloader.
It's been slow recently but devs have overcome and done somethings that people didn't even think would happen, like Root and ROMs. We just need to be patient because our device is a bit of a challenge but I'm thankful for all of the people working to make this thing really rock!
Thats what i kind of figured it was ( the bootloader ). i don't really even think it's so much as people going with the droid x because even looking at their boards, its still quiet. yah they have a couple of "roms" (tranquility, focused) but not like the eris's kaos.froyo or any of the other completely re-done kernels.
Don't get me wrong i absolutely love this phone and do NOT miss my eris at all, but i just wish there was some interest from devs on this phone.
Oh well, i'll just keep checking the boards i guess.
There is interest from devs for this phone. It's just taking time for them to get past the problems. You don't see many posts yet because they are working on that. Once there are work arounds I'm sure the development will pick up.

The Droid 2 is my first smartphone when it comes to android and such. I bought it in October and ever since I heard about rooting/kernels/ROMs I have really been wandering about my purchase. Looking at the incredible I heard there was so much more available to them and I really began wandering even more. So I was hoping I could get some of you to confirm my purchase was in fact a good one. Especially since even with the locked bootloader I can still do most of what I want to do that people with an unlocked bootloader can do.
the droid 2 i believe is just about technologically the same as the dinc, 1GHz processor, slightly faster gpu, same amount of RAM, but the droid 2 has a keyboard
also, if you look through the development thread for the D2, there are several roms available, and you can overclock the processor like you can with most android handsets, so you really arent missing out on much when it comes to modding the droid 2
I agree and think the Droid 2 is slightly better for various reasons. It is also my first Android smart phone.
I think unlike older droids (D1) the Droid 2 doesn't really need the speed increase an overclock can provide and ROMs don't need to change much because the devices have included more things we like.
This is kind of a parallel to the Xbox modding from the original to the 360. The original couldn't store games or connect with certain devices so people learned how to mod them (software or otherwise) and they became more usable to the user because they could now store more on the hard drive and be able to upgrade the Hard drive for more storage space. All of these things are included in the 360 which can still be modded (with difficulty and sometimes dire consequences) but it doesn't really need to because a lot of the functionality gained by modding the first xbox is already available on the new one.
Coming from the Eris... yes, I absolutely regret getting this locked bootloader crap phone. A little more research before I bought would've been a good thing. Still would have been hard to pass up buy 1 referb for 50$ and get a 2nd free though.

Well I thank you for a response even if it was somewhat vague. What bothers you about the locked bootloader? We still have plenty of rom's. Can still overclock. Can still make backups. So instead of just saying the locked bootloader suxor, explain what makes you want a phone with an unlocked bootloader.

I used to swap roms all the time. Now when you swap roms to one made by another developer its recomended you sbf first. I could get by with never plugging the eris in to a pc. I could run different kernels on whatever rom which was very nice. I really miss cyanogenmod and the lock screen gestures. There's a ton more activity in eris dev and a ton more roms to play with. Hell, already got 3 gingerbread roms out for the eris. The locked bootloader has really limited this phone. The only thing it has over the eris is more mem and its faster. Keyboards nice too I guess. Id be sooo much happier with another htc though.
If you care so much about the development on a phone, then you shouldn't really get a phone, seriously, that's not what phones are for. The rom selection for the droid 2 is just fine and you can already do everything on it that you can for most other phones, minus gingerbread. You should be glad that development isn't like what it is on the droid 2 global, with only one usable rom that hasn't been updated in over a month.

youre right, I shouldnt have a phone. Thought this was a developer forum, my bad
Im not saying development is bad, im just saying that if you bought a phone for the development being made on the phone then its obvious your priorities aren't straight, im bummed that there isn't much development for the d2g, but so long as I can talk and text and do other things just fine on the phone and it last me a minimum of 1 day while doing it, then I have no complaints.

I hate to say it, but if you were that into ROM develepment, why did you make the jump after finding out about the locked bootloader in the first place? I had the Droid Pro before the D2 and then the Sammy Fascinate before that and the D1 prior to that. The D1 obviously had a lot of activity in the ROM department and was fun to play with, but I eventually got tired of changing the ROM so many times so once I found a good Kernel/ROM combo I never swapped again for the rest of the time I had the phone. When I made the switch to the Fascinate the weak reception forced me to get another phone and the DPro just came out so I made that switch and was happy for a while but couldn't handle the complete lack of development and the Blur was killing me. After reading about a ROM that looked good for me (Fission) I found someone willing to trade their D2 for my DPro and I'm absolutely loving this phone. Its everything I wanted, and I now have a phone I feel I can keep for the remainder of my contract and be happy with.
No remorse with the D2 for me.?

Who the hell are you to tell me my priorities aren't straight? ROM development is a big fn deal to me. It's my fn opinion, which i'm fully fn entitled to. Why my opinion and me stating my opinion when asked to clarify would cause you to go on a rant, especially on a fn developors forum, I have no idea. Get off your high horse buddy. I didn't find out about the bootloader being locked until after I made the jump.. see, I got two droid 2's for $50 total from verizon and my fiance needed a new phone... so.. I'm now the owner of a phone with a locked bootloader.

You do realize that you are coming off as a bit foolish when you act like development on a phone is more important than the function of the phone itself. I don't understand how you can absolutely hate the phone just because it has a locked bootloader, its one of the best pieces of hardware on the market and functions perfectly fine even with the locked bootloader. You think that a locked bootloader stopped devs like ang to make custom roms? It shouldn't even matter. I never said I don't give a crap about development on a phone, im running fission on my phone that I've heavily modified, heck I used to be a kernel developer for a linux distro called auroraOS, go check out their website, you'll see a familiar name on their dev list. Now please don't pollute the droid 2 forums with such hateful comments about the device, most of us here love our phones.

You do realize you come off a bit foolish stressing how unimportant development and modding is on a DEVELOPMENT AND MODDING forum. Especially when you come back talking about how much you've modded your phone AFTER saying that as long as you can talk and text you don't care, because it's a phone.
Agree with you on the locked bootloader being a non-issue for the most part. Of course, were it not for the locked bootloader, we would probably already have full gingerbread roms for this phone.
3 of my co-workers have dinc's. I much prefer my droid2.
I didn't say that you said people who own the phone suck, I just said that I believe you're reason for greatly disliking the phone is pretty foolish, especially since it can be worked around. Once a gingeebread rom leaks for our phones im sure that the locked bootloader wont even be relevant anymore.

You'd think I did as personally as you took it. The locked bootloader is relevant to me. If it's not relevant to you, fine. I'm glad you love your phone, enjoy it. I happen to not like mine.
Alright well this has gotten a little out of control. I basically got my opinion down so if a mod wants to close this thread I think that would be best as the bootloader is locked and there is nothing any of us here can do about it.
guys I think we all need to calm down when it comes to developers and
their work around here
Motorola has always been known for the Closed Playground when it comes to it's devices so when a dev starts a project, most of the comment here doesn't really help.
you need to remember that we don't have the source code for the kernel yet, the moto atrix is only recently BL unlocked and most important - devs are doing all of this work for free and on their spare time!!!
coming from a long line of Android Devices ( G1, Milestone, Desire HD ) i Know what waiting means and not always you get what you want when you want it.
Patience is not bad word and whining certainly doesn't help at all
i traded my fully i unlocked customizable Desire HD for the atrix and sometimes it's frustrating that i can't put whatever rom that i want on it but i know that talking **** about devs won't help me.
so sit back calm down and lets hope things will go faster from now on.

I agree with every word. Coming from HTC hero, and being used to replace roms almost on a daily basis, I can say that these chilish rushing was what ruined the hero dev community. The devs are doing wonderful job, and rushing them will only make them leave (khock for example...).
On an other matter, sortof, didnt the atrix kernel code was release right after the device was?

very well agree, i have been visiting this site for quite sometime, but keeping in the background since I do not know a WHOLE lot about modding and developing. Im starting to get the gist of it through books, and this website though.

Hi guys, I started this thread with the intent that the new users of our forum could first stop in and introduce their selves. They are the new blood around here and may very well have something useful to share with us! Use this thread as you see fit as long as you keep it clean and follow all the XDA rules
Enjoy!!!
Here I'll start us off:
Hi my name is Josh. I'm 27, married to the best woman in the world. We have a beautiful 5yo daughter who is now in school. I have one dog, one wolf mix, a cat, a hamster and a tank full of minnows(my daughter said we are not allowed to use them as bait, lol) I am U.S. Army Medically Retired. I was a 91B(mechanic)(originally a 63W for you old heads) in the Army until I hurt my back. I've been to Iraq twice, Egypt once, and did maint support operations on the Port of Beaumont, Texas and the Port of Olympia in Washington. I was there while the riots where going on. I did enjoy serving my country and am very proud to have been given this special opportunity. Now that I am out of the mil I can focus more on my family, living life and of course my geeky addiction.
Its been a fun road to now. I started out with my first Android phone the HTC Droid Eris. I enjoyed the works of many great devs and learned so much while using there Rom's. workshed, Tazzpatriot, condemned soul, conap, gnarlic man the list goes on... These guys are really who got me interested in developing and everything else. With there help a did a little theming for the Eris. It was mostly just minor stuff for Cm. As time past I eventually moved on to the HTC Droid Incredible. I've been here since March. I started out again doing some theming then I moved up to my DTR's (BUNKER BUSTER DTR and yes since I'm retired U.S Army thats why it is named something militaryish). Its a fun little project and its also my way of sticking it to the man, lol. Now most of my focus goes to my Roms. I have Pure Speed which is my first and my baby. I'm so proud of that rom. I also have Hybrid Speed, Sub Sonic and my latest my first ever 3.0 rom Pure Shooter.
All in all this Inc community has taught me so much and showed me a whole new world I never knew existed. We have good support, good people and great devs here. My time spent here is now just keeping my work updated and trying to help out as much as I can.
Anyways, enough with me blabbering on... Lets hear about you!
You know the phone is awesome when the introduce yourself thread is created a year and a half after release.

Hi Don me too, lol. BTW what are you doing in here old timer? Just kidding.
New Guy
Retired Navy with 30 years in Subs. (Missile Technician)
I used this forum to root the other day.
This site seems to be used as a reference for others so I went to the source.
I rooted to the CM7 and the new radio that came out with gingerbread.
After going through the rooting process I am ready not to go through the setup again. TB kept force closing after each app install(took a long time) I'll wait for awhile and let the guru's play with the new GB and see what develops.
I am Ryan, been here since day 1. The root process was crazy involved then... Memories! But I got it, after three days of trying after work! I try to help here from my experiences I've had with my Inc. I've rooted my girl's Desire, my Xoom, and this week my buddy's Inc is getting the business!
I've done some minor tweaking of existing code, but haven't done any ROM creating/modding. I've made themes for myself, so I understand how to replace/edit/create draw 9 PNG's and replacing other files in APKs. I've become pretty good with GIMP, but have never created images from scratch.
Other than that, I'm a smart ass, like to golf, and am currently moving in with my girl. I've met really cool people in these forums, who I continue to talk with via Twitter or Gtalk.
Looking forward to helping anyone out, and meeting new/existing DInc owners.

I was again slow to switch from sense over to AOSP, but now since I've done all that I really love my phone and even now I just figured out there's a whole mess more you can do with widgetlocker and other theming apps.

Some of the stuff on there I had no idea you could even do, it's amazing.
I think there'll probably be more user who've had their Dinc for a while rather than newer users BUT ANYWAYS.... Well my name's Antonio and I'm 17. I'm hoping to go to either Princeton or Boston University and become an Anesthesiologist. The Dinc is my first smartphone and I got it in September 2010, but didn't root until sometime around December. I had no idea what root was, I found out more about it when Gingerbread first came out and builds started coming out for the Dinc. I began to do some research and I found Xda, but I didn't become a member until March of this year. I have since then become a flashaholic and the longest continous time I've had a ROM has been Pure Shooter for two weeks so far.... Do we get a gold star for this? Lol

I've recently begun developing apps for Android just as a fun side project. I have not made a ROM yet, but I have been heavily debating it. I think I'll give it a try when the real Gingerbread OTA comes out, but we'll see since I'll be busy with school starting back up AND work in a few days...
I try to help people out because this is a community. I try to give feedback as much as possible and like to point people in the right direction if ever needed. I am a bit of a ROM flashing addict and even the ROMs that I don't try, I at least read about and get familiarized with! The Inc community is seriously awesome, and we've only gotten better as a whole. Thanks to the devs and to all the members for making my hobby even more enjoyable!
cool idea; you know, i've always wondered about a lot of us here..we always talk phones and whatnot, but we dunno anything about eachother lol
well i'm jay (clearly lol) and i'm from the shore of NJ, born and raised (not to be affiliated with that dirtbag trash on that bull**** TV show, sigh.) i'm 24, i've got my bachelors from rutgers university and my masters from monmouth..unfortunately, since our wonderful government is utter **** right now, the fact that my degrees deal with getting a job in the state/federal government realm isn't helping whatsoever, as I can't land a gov job for the life of me...so i currently work for a small family-owned Verizon store that sells vzw phones, accessories and FiOS. besides that, i'm a musician of 11 years (bass, guitar, drums) and i play bass in a band.
as for my wonderful android journey, it only began in may of 2010 when my buddy sold me his htc eris for 20 bucks when he got his dinc on release day in the mail in april. he told me it'd be fine for me since it was my first smartphone, but he was sick of it already (had it for like 4 months lol) and that it was super laggy to him, so he got the dinc. well, the eris lasted me barely 3 months..even after rooting it and upping my processor speed with setcpu, the thing was still super laggy and the typing lag was atrocious..
so i was one of the people who ordered the Dinc during the Great Amoled Shortage of '10 hahah...ordered it early July, and got it on July 29th...kept it stock for a while, thought the phone was AMAZXING bc there was no typing lag etc...and then that damn Froyo OTA hit, and my phone just started crapping out. typing lag was about as bad as it was on the eris after that OTA, and i almost threw this phone so many times. so finally, in january of '11 i rooted...put on lou's redemptive revolution, still had keyboard lag, and was just super angry.
then i saw Z roms come about, and my lag was finally gone, and i've been playing with new roms ever since. so yeah, safe to say i've easily had this phone for a year and have no intentions on upgrading anytime soon! haha
whoa, that was a book! but whatever. i love my inc, and after just installing synergy again and the Warm theme for the first time, it's bringing me back to my early days of rooting when my first Z rom was warm z two.point.two!! ahh nostalgia.
I'm somewhat new here, due to my recent activity. But I recently got hold of an Incredible after my Droid A855 had growing digitizer issues. I haven't looked back because I really grew to like the device because it's extremely light (sometimes a little too light for comfort), and it's been smooth as melted butter. I'm currently running gingerbread inc deck 1.2b beta on my rooted Incredible. For what I consider(ed) a stop gap device, I'll be hard pressed to find a 4G phone I'll like enough to use my upgrade from VZW..
Another march guy. My name is cameron. I'm 17, currently jobless, have way too much on my plate for a 17 year old, and have the best girlfriend and family I could ask for.
The job field I want to get into its automotive. I've been tearing apart 350 small blocks, 429 big blocks, honda engines, and everything in between since I could walk.
I'm an admitted crackflasher (flashed every rom in the dev section at least once) I was introduced to android when I got a motorola defy for christmas (it blew)
One day I eventually wanna have a family of my own with this girl right here.
