After reading around on the forums and seeing people getting theirs fixed for around $120, I was more than willing to pay. HTC said the same price, but they just quoted me $55! It was a smallish crack and the touch sensor still worked.
Just wanted to let y'all know that it could be less as well as more! Cheers
Considering the shortage of amoled screens. Maybe you got an slcd screen instead?
It does sound like it. Super tft screen should be a lot cheaper to buy from sony since the technology has matured.

I recently did a swap because I dropped my phone and the screen cracked. Yesterday, I got my quote of $115. You were lucky to only have to pay that much

He probably had a cracked glass, not the display or digitizer.
Just to throw my two cents in....
I too had a cracked screen and the actual repair cost was $55. However, during my original phone conversation with HTC they quoted me $115.
How long did the turn around take for HTC to fix your phone?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I mailed it to them on July 26th and received it back yesterday, August 5.
not too bad of a turn around time. Just hope Ill keep this phone long enough and not damage it. Very tempting to sell it and buy the latest toy, not being under contract is nice. Almost went for the iphone 4 already, and still am tempted to do so. Most likely just going to unlock the 3gs I currently have sitting around.
I wish they'd put a new digitizer with the SLCD screens. I'd consider dropping my n1 heavily and pay to get the new screen lol.
I wonder if it's possible to jury-rig an Incredible's digitizer into the n1...
Just got it back today. They did say it would take longer as usual because the service center was backed up...in total it took 9 days for them to look at it, fix it, and send it back.
The screen looks quite similar. When looking closely it has the same AMOLED pattern my original phone had, do the SLCD screens also have that pixel pattern?
They ended up swapping the phone for the $55...and yes, I now have a locked bootloader which I can do a sneaky unlock on. Awesome!

I just thought I'd share the story of how my Nexus One became a 576 dollar(CA Tax) brick. I went hiking up in the Angeles Forest to go Bungee jumping on Saturday. It was a 5 mile hike, but not a too terribly hard one. I put my Nexus One in my bag and didn't think about it. When we got to the Bridge to Nowhere, the Bungee location, I took my Nexus One out of my bag to take some photos and video. I hit the power button and nothing happened. I knew my battery couldn't be dead. I took off my sunglasses and noticed spider cracks all over the screen originating from the bottom left of the screen.
It sucks, and I have no idea how it happened. I never took my bag off my back, I never hit anything. It is very depressing. I'm trying to email the google store support to see if i can get it refurbished or something so i don't have to buy a new one for full price. The screen displays nothing, but still responds to touch. I can feel when i hit the area that unlocked it the vibrating feedback. I doubt there are any AMOLED screens out there, or a way to easily replace it myself. Let's hope google can fix it somehow for a price less than buying a new one. If not, well then I'm boned.
Wow, sorry dude. I hope Google can help you out on this matter. Maybe you did bump it somewhere without knowing?
Are you sure it wasn't pressure from contents of the pack itself?
senseless post, never mind me.
Bummer...let us know if you can get it replaced.
So I guess we can safely say this isn't the Gorilla glass as found on the Droid.
pics? and does the phone not even turn on? ive see dozes of iphone users with cracked screens still touching away at it uncontrollably lol
yeah cracked capacitive touch screens usually continue to work fine and the screen under them should not be effected unless it took a pretty darn good hit
sucks to have happened to you so soon but i will say that personally having known how easy it is to crack these types of screens i have always kept my G1 in my jean pocket with the screen facing my leg at all times.
i've dropped my G1 about 5 or 6 times in the past 1+ year and the back of my phone is in much worse shape than the front but still no cracked screen i do however have a half way broken back cover

If you have it on T-Mobile, there's a way to get it replaced via asurion insurance for a $130 deductible.. Since it's still within the first 14 days of owning the device, you could do that.
read this sticky on the nexus one forums: http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/...surion-insurance-now-available-nexus-one.html
Just add insurance and you're saved. Tell them you have a cracked screen, and you're golden =) (never tell asurion that you had your phone stolen.. you'll need a police report)
If you're on AT&T though, you may be screwed. However if that's the case, you can call HTC and they can probably repair it for a fee.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into this! I'm on t-mobile, but i bought it unlocked. Lets hope it still works.
The phone still turns on, I see notification glows of the trackball. The buttons light up, I can even unlock the phone by sliding where i know the button is.. but the screen doesn't come on at all. it looks like it cracked at the bottom right and spider'd up most of the screen.
It was in a padded compartment of my bag, and it only had a few bottles of water(in an entirely different section of the bag) and my hoodie in it. I can't understand how it happened.
well it sure as hell didnt punch itself in the screen
Crazy, Ive had a couple close calls with my G1 and saw one of my friends G1s drop right in front of me and shatter at the movies but hers still worked just cracked everywhere. That really sucks.

From what I've read there's been a lot of different stories of whether or not asurion will cover the phone, but from what I can tell they do- and it's also listed on their phoneclaim.com site (though I don't recommend using it.. it's usually easier to call, I work for tmobile and customers that come in have tons of complaints from that)
To add insurance to the phone you may have to go into a retail store from what I read and show them a reciept from google that it was bought, and they'll add it to your account, so hopefully you can do that, heh. I'll keep a lookout for any new info and post it here, so keep us updated on the status ^^
Sounds like the water bottles may have hit it at an angle, there could have been a bump or something that caused the plastic lid of the bottle to become compressed against the phone, thus resulting in a pressure crack (which explains the spidering) Even if it's in the padded section, keep in mind that if you put enough pressure on a screen it'll crack, as everything has it's breaking point. For your next one nexus one (lol, 'nextus one') I'd probably recommend a hard-leather pouch for when you're going hiking so it doesn't happen again, and the soft-case for your pocket for less bulk
Once boxwave comes out with their anti-glare screen protectors, I'd suggest one of those as well to prevent the little nicks and such ^_^
Good luck!

seems like it might be a downside of an OLED screen. I've seen several cracked G1's work fine, it does surprise me that the N1 won't display anything at all.. maybe the video cable came unplugged somehow. Hmm.
I called T-mo and she said they show it as a phone that can make a claim if you already had insurance on your account, but that she wasn't able to add it to a new Nexus One since t-mobile does not support or sell it. I tried to talk her into it repeatedly and she said it just wouldn't let her. I said thanks and politely hung up. I'm gonna try calling back again to get someone else in a bit.
OMG! That really bites! Was it really hot out? I really feel for you I paid full price for mine too. Thats why I'm looking for a hard case. Hope it works out for you.
Same problem - cracked screen on Nexus One
OK I was not hiking or anything - just hanging out with my Nexus One in my pocket. Pulled it out and the screen looked funny. By the next morning, all black. It wasn't until I looked closer in bright light that I noticed several cracks in the internal screen, coming from the edges.
I think this is going to be a big problem for this phone. I've dropped my G1 about 20 times over the past 15 months and it's fine. I've even dunked it in a glass of water, dried it out, and it's fine. I did nothing to my Nexus One and the screen (inside! with no external damage whatsoever) is cracked and now does not work. This is lousy manufacturing.
I put a call into HTC and they are supposed to be sending me a fedex label to send them the phone, but I didn't tell them the screen is cracked, I just said the screen doesn't work. So I am expecting them to tell me I'll have to pay to replace the screen. The warranty number for HTC is 888-617-1113. If you call them and get the price for replacing the screen, please post it here so I and others know what to expect.
Also, there is a company in Dallas called dr cell phone (google it) which can repair screens the same day they receive your phone, you can just ship it to them. It costs somewhere between $75 and $175 and they said they will repair the Nexus One (they do many other HTC phones). However they told me they are waiting on parts from HTC so it could be 1-2 weeks before they get parts.
Hope this helps - I'm in the same boat. Good luck.
I compare the Nexus screen to Heros. It feels like Nexus has a plastic screen?

Sorry, but if you try to do the insurance thing listed here, your claim will be denied. Asurion checks to see when you last used the IMEI number to place a call. They will see that you have been unable to place any calls since a certain date and added insurance after that date. They will know your device was damaged before you added the insurance and deny the claim. Since your touch screen still works, perhaps try holding the search button to initiate a call through voice dialing. If you can make a call after adding the insurance, you should be good.

Same here. Always on the rear pocket, even when driving and its still in pristine shape (sold it yesterday, snif!). From your second assertion, looks like the G1's display is even stronger than the back (not as flexible, though).
There's a bright spot on my screen its not discoloured just brighter then the rest of the screen about the size of a pencil eraser I brought it to the Sprint store to get a replacement but they told me its because I dropped the phone yes I have dropped it previously and you can see the scratch but the off sent cracked at all just a scratch on the case I asked the tech if he could prove that it was from droping the phone he said he can't but wont order me a replacement has this issue happens to anyone else any ideas on what I should do?

go to a different store until they replace it
my replacement was like that, i was like, eh i can live with it!!
my first one did it. it was a biotch to get it replaced. Then my new one started doing the same thing in the same spot. It really only noticeable on white screens. I have insurance from best buy so im just going to smash the mofo and get a new one when i get back from the desert. hopefully they have some new hardware revisions out by then and it will be all better but ill probably just get stuck with a refurb.
I have the same issue with mine. It just started here recently. It's not bugging me too bad, so I'll just live with it. And I haven't done anything to mine (no drops).
So it's not something under my screen protector. Good to know.
It bothers me on bright white screens, but everything else about the phone is great. I'm not sure I'd trade this in and potentially get a phone with light leakage, screen raising, etc. Maybe I will eventually get it looked at, though. Like, after hardware 0004 and 0005 come out?
We'll see.
Could anybody post a pic of this phenomenon?
@zhensley-Unless you've just bought your phone and they roll out the 004 revision pretty soon, your chances of getting one are pretty slim. If i'm not mistaken after the 30 day return period any replacement phone you would get is a refurb. I'd definitely wait a looong while until the 002/3's are less common to even think about getting a refurb.
I have this too. I have not dropped it, and taken good care of it (albeit, without a case / screen protector). And yes, it only shows on white screens - and mine is the size of a large dime. It's annoying, but I can live with it. I don't even want to attempt to deal with Sprint.
+1
I am on my 2nd EVO - the first was not like this (002) this is a novatek 003 - and i only really notice it on white screens as well.. my phone has been in the official HTC rubber case since day one
but I can live with it for sure
Yeah my phone has that bright light to at the right too I had never dropped the phone its been the since I bought the phone
you guys shouldn't just sit on this problem. some of the earlier EVO's had this issue, there was a thread about this, and they took them back for replacements. my first one was like this. now mine is perfect.
Had the same problem with my first Evo, never dropped it, even my laptop has these spots.
So, I had the issue too.
I called into sprint store in West LA, and asked if I could get a replacement for the bright spots.
According to the rep I talked to this has been happening more and more; and said come into the store and we can order you a replacement.
I went to the store 5 hours later, and I talked to the same person I talked to on the phone, and he placed the order without even looking at the phone. I was in and out in 5 minutes.
Pretty Easy. Not sure why OP had so much difficulty.
The touchscreen died.
Last night when I used it, I notice the touchscreen has no more response.
Tried to power cycle (I still can use the trackball) and it doesn't help.
It's time to say goodbye and you're remembered.
I think I read it was $115 to replace the screen by sending it to HTC, you have this option still I guess.

hell, give it to me, i replaced my digitizer for 30$ and my phone still does anything i could ever need it to do, and if it cant do i then i can turn on the tether and my laptop can.
replacing the digitizer isn't too much of a pain in the ass other than removing / replacing the glue. i used some heavy duty 3M double sided tape which was just slightly too thick but it'll work until the nexus 3 comes out.
also, might it be a software issue? i've been having random touch screen problems ever since i installed the latest OTA (2.3.4) including non responsiveness and random input.
yeah i used spray adhesive on the tray that holds the led and digitizer, masked off properly worked like a charm
My N1 is showing this symptom too Something bad is coming

lol loved mine too, enough so that although I picked up an sgs2 I still have the nexi, a first time for that. I have always sold the old when the next thing came along.
I feel your pain. Please do give your N1 a proper send off.
However, with that said, granted that our work-horse phones are subject to daily wear & tear, but how are you guys handling your N1s? No reason why a digitizer becomes inoperable due to wear because it inherently has no moving parts. Unless of course it gets scratched or dropped.
I'm aware of the inferior digitizer with its multi-touch issue, but simply turning the screen off/on "resets" it. Other than that, it's still as responsive as day one.
N1s (especially when it first came out) aren't cheap. Gotta handle them, or any smartphone really, with kid gloves. I'm still using the cover that came with it and it has saved my N1 from quite a number of drops.
Bottom line, (modded) N1s should continue to keep up (and in some cases still kick ass) with newly released smartphones if we just handle them with a modicum of care.

Hey man dont let it go just yet. A power cycle isn't all you can do. First try to wipe and flash a new rom. If that dosnt work use fast boot and restore everything to original including your boot loader. I really hope its not dead. If you dont want to buy a new screen there are people who will, so please sell it or give it away on craigslist, you cant just give up on such a legendary phone.
I had one with screen raise ... otherwise great. I don't want the hassle of endless refund cycles.
So, for new (or recent) orders from the Play store which I am assuming is the fastest clearing channel... do they still have the screen lift problem.
i.e. has the hardware been rev'd yet ? Anyone with a recent delivery know....
I just got my replacement today. I don't want to speak too soon but it's been out of the box for about 2 hrs and hey it looks fine right now. I'm gonna charge it and use it a little and see if anything pops up so to say and I'll update later tonight.
Edit: I wish there was a way to tell the hardware revision if there is one at all. I might crack these both open before I send my other one back and see if I can spot any differences.
I don't consider the screen lift an issue so I would have to say you have been good since day one. Other than that I haven't heard anything on "New batches" being released.

Not sure how its NOT and issue. Considering if the screen lifts to much the tablet wont work correctly. That being said I have got my replacement and I have a feeling its going to do the same thing. If you look down the sides of the tablet you will notice where the glass doesnt connect to the case. Thats where the screen is going to lift and the way this one looks its going to be just a matter of time before the screen lifts.

I have had the screen lift since day one and have no issues since. Don't understand how a slim screen lift is going to bork the device.
Got my second unit Wednesday. It has screen lift as well.
I would definitely advise against buying retail, but I think Google can be trusted. I'm just going to hold onto this defective one for a month or two. Then I'll ask for a replacement.
No regrets, although I was pretty miffed about opening a new one with the same flaw when it happened.

I bought mine retail from Office Depot on 7/17 and haven't had a single problem with it.
In the UK I'm waiting until they physically have them in the stores. Right now it tends to be buy online and pick up in store a couple of days later. I got one last Friday from Tesco Direct and it had the screen-lift (this IS a fault) so took it straight back. I'd rather be taking back and getting a replacement straight away rather than waiting 2-3 days...or 10 days and counting with the crappy service offered by Google

Careful with buying in store. It may not be considered a fault (for the reasons expressed elsewhere in this thread) and if you do not have UK DSR law then you may not be able (allowed) to make a return. I wouldn't fancy my chances in CPW or Currys of doing a return if the device is functioning (but just not quite flush).
Most UK retailers allow you to return for simply not liking the product. In Tesco the guy told me it didn't matter if it was faulty as it was within their X days return. They'll be selling them in store in a couple of weeks apparently.
tribestos, fail to see how OCD relates to finding a fault on a piece of hardware. It's not like people are obsessively looking for faults. The screen isn't supposed to lift but it does. That's a design flaw.
So somebody must be taking the hit for all the returns... is it the retailer or do they just return the units back to the manufacturer and not pay for the duff ones ?

The replacement 7s poll has gotten sunnier, although people are voting prematurely. Also, it's not public, but I don't think many would tamper with it.
Although I have not seen a unit without this defect, there are at least a few posters there who should know exactly what to look for and haven't found any separation in their replacement whatsoever. That's a good sign, and that poll was pretty ugly last Wednesday, so the vast majority of respondents since then have been ticking perfect.
As for when this flaw will be officially dealt with, probably never. But don't hold that against Google. They can make right by rooting out the manufacturing flaw and dealing with unsatisfied customers on an individual basis. No need for any headlines.
Got my first Nexus 7 on the 17th. I was somewhat unhappy with how washed out the colors were. Also when I play a video the screen gets even more washed out for a short period of time. Generally just looks unsatisfactory. Also I have a row of pixels that sometimes flickers.
On the 24th I got my replacement Nexus 7. It was also washed out looking, had the same video playback issue. And the glass was raise on the left side if I held it there the screen would distort slightly.
I called Google today to get a feel on if I should try a second replacement or get a refund. The lady at Google said that Google has the new batch in now and says it has fixed the issues the first batch had with raised glass, pixel issues, and color quality.
So I'm doing a second RMA now. She's even letting me RMA the second device while I still have my first device (was worried I'd need to send that back before starting the second RMA).

You have that choice. But when I spend my money on something I expect it to be built w/o flaws. Hope the glass dont fall out on you when the screws get to lose! Oh you wont care tho it will still be irrelevant right?

Wow that is brilliant news... assuming that the CS adviser was being honest.

Yeah, I hope she wasn't blowing smoke up my butt. That happens too. But I figure with the 16GB Nexus 7 suddenly returning to the Play store and the CS telling me this, it's hopefully correct.
Hey everyone,
So I've gotten a smashed up Nexus 7 tablet from a friend, who said I get to keep it since she already got a Dell Venue 7 as a replacement tablet. I was looking up for a replacement screen and found out that the LCD panel is bonded to the glass using a super adhesive which meant that it's nearly impossible to remove without damaging the LCD unit itself. So I was looking for a replacement unit with an LCD display attached, what I found was that a majority of the display units are manufactured by CHUNGHWA which was not the original display manufacturer for this tablet. So my question is, since CHUNGHWA seems to be popular and cheaper than getting the original HYDIS panels:
How is the quality of these CHUNGHWA panels? Are the colours good and the viewing angles comparable with the HYDIS panels?
As long as they're comparable, I don't mind getting a CHUNGHWA replacement panel.
Please let me know if you guys have experiences with these panels as I haven't been able to find opinions on these panels on the Internet other than people are selling these panels as replacement panels.
Many thanks,
deltatux
This is not what you'd call rapid reply, but maybe someone still has this question.
I cracked my original N7 screen (Hydis) after couple weeks of usage. Bought Chunghwa replacement as it was the only available at the moment. And today it finally died after a year of agony. Basically, Chunghwa was much worse:
It was blinking. It seemed like from time to time (not always) it could not decide between two neighbour levels of auto brightness so started to switch between them like 5 times a sepond. Very annying.
Two white pixels occured in a month
It liked to touch itself, yeah. Sometimes it would start random touches until I switch the device off and back on.
Yesterday it started to report multiple touches along a vertical center line of display. Switching off/on didn't help any more. I disassembled the tablet hoping this is a bad contact and I can fix it just disconnecting/connecting the ribbons and after that digitizer died completely.
You better look for Hydis.
well I just got a replacement screen for mine... got the chumbawumba as well. hoping it works out for me. but hey, I only spent 20 for the smashed tablet and then 35 for the replacement screen/digitizer/bezel combo.

@schollianmj
What was your outcome?
At the moment I am debating on getting a chumbawumba one or buying a second hand screen (both touch and LCD have gone in mine)

Mine came out fine. been using it in my car a lot latley and no issues other than the screw issues. just be prepared for them to fight you and get a real screwdriver. I put screws in all 4 corners and I believe a couple down the sides. got maybe 2/3ds the screws in but you couldnt tell with the back cover snapped on.
Honestly I wasnt to worrried about getting the chumbawumba screen despite a few neg reviews because my tablet was bought for cheap with a smashed screen. I figured if it worked good then great for me. if it flaked out after a few months I would just get a new tablet.

Thanks for replying. I brought mine cheap too. Hadn't thought about it in that way so might just take your thing and risk it.
Having said this, I have just found a "dead" nexus 7 on eBay that's cheap too....
