Im just wondering, why does SGS has video call and wifi tethering when only Android 2.2 supports wifi tethering and Android do not support video call (according to wikipedia). For example HTC Evo 4g is not able to make video call unless using 3rd party app such as Qik.
Is this a special development by the Samsung team to incoperate these features or what?
Im just confused
the opposite, whom ever edited the wiki, did not have all the facts
ask anyone using the i9000 model in Europe, they can do video call just fine, and data modem works in any country, as long as your computer is compatible

Yup! of course i know vid call is working. Just that android does not support vid call. Maybe its a special thingy tht samsung did wf google or what...
And im saying wifi tethering as in using the phone's wifi to make ad hoc connection. cuz right now , only android 2.2 officially supports that. And assuming samsung's android 2.1 is official rom it shouldnt have wifi tethering support. Which is mobile ap under Wireless COnnection option in settings.
tethering (data modem/usb/WiFi) has been supported since Android 1.5
many old android phones can enable that, some requires hacks or using 3rd party software
but in 2.1 it works out of the box at least in the SGS phone

It says supported handsets will be able to use videocalling

I've been trying to search for a solution to this, and haven't found anything yet on this topic. I keep seeing SIP and programs that require you to connect to a VoIP server, but I am not sure if this will accomplish the same goal. Basically I like how the Blackberry UMA technology connects via WiFi from overseas, and lets you make calls back to the US using your regular plan minutes with no long distance charges. Is there any way to do the same thing on the HD2 (US version)? I know the antenna's are not the same technology.
There is also an option for internet calling when you go to Settings Tab>Menu>All Settings>Personal>Phone>Internet. It reads:
Internet Calling
To set the calling network for your next call, select Internet Calling on the Home Screen.
Does this even do anything?
I too would be very interested in something like this as my reception at my home - inside or out - is very weak.
I have tried several different radios as well, but I'm not having any luck.
Ditto.. I could totally use this feature. Does anyone know if you must have hardware that supports it or is it just software that runs on the phone ?
As far as I know both the hardware and software must support UMA in order for it to work. For instance, I could use UMA calling on my Shadow 2009, but could'nt on my Shadow 2007, even though they ran the same build of WinMo. From what I understand UMA has to be built into the WiFi chip in order for it to work.
I have truphone, witch works great, but only for outgoing calls. I need something that works through wifi that I can get incoming calls as well as outgoing. This is the one and only thing that makes me miss my blackberry. If I wasn't merely 9 months into my 2 year contract I could afford the mytouch 4g or the G2 and enjoy uma, but I don't have 500 plus dollars for yet another new phone. Trust me I'd love a new Mytouch 4G but it's at least another year until I can get one. I know this is off topic but does anyone have any hands on knowledge about the signal boosters they sell online? what ones work? cuz I get like 1 bar in my house and it comes and goes but soon as i'm 3 doors up I have 5 bars and 3g. So I definitely need something.
I was searching for just the same thing and came across this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=380803
post 23 explains it, so now all thats needed is adaptation, but I'm not a programer.
Here are the files I did download, but I haven't tested them, nor would know how to "make" them work.
Hope someone can make this work, I get 0 service at home, cause I live in a rural area, but work in a metro.

But how does that explain the Wi-fi calling feature that is added through custom rom flashes for the Samsung Vibrant and the Nexus One? Both those devices never had UMA from the beginning but was added through custom flashes later on.
Yeah, Damenloader is right. How come there's a rom that gives the Vibrant and the Nexus UMA wifi calling ? Anybody ? I'd REALLY like to get UMA on my HD2.

Are you guys sure you're not confusing Wi-Fi calling for UMA? These are two different technologies. Wi-Fi calling is simply using a messenger program or SIP server to make calls using Wi-Fi. It's free to other Wi-Fi users or charged to account credits for phone numbers (Fringo, Skype, Nimbuzz, Google Voice). SIP servers work the same way (SIP Gate, etc.), you have to have an account with credit to make Wi-Fi calls to phone numbers.
Both of these Wi-Fi calling options require you to purchase calling credit to make calls to telephone numbers.
The idea behind UMA is that you do not have to purchase credit through a third party, but instead you use the minutes on your T-Mobile plan. For example, if you make a Wi-Fi call with a Blackberry (UMA-enabled phone), you would be connected through T-Mobile's servers (not 3rd party, ie: Skype), and they would simply deduct the minutes from your monthly plan. It would work the same with UMA as it would with a regular phone call through wireless service, free t-motbile to t-mobile, nights and weekends, etc.
I have searched this information thoroughly and have only come to conclude that UMA capability has to be built into the phone, via a chip or other. So far I have not seen anything about UMA being accessible through a program install or software mod.
If you simply want Wi-Fi calling it is possible with the HD2, as I have already done it with Skype and SIP Gate. It will be free if the person you are calling also has Skype, Nimbuzz, Fringo, etc. If you don't mind paying 2-10 cents/minute, then you can purchase the credit and make Wi-Fi calls to telephone numbers as well.
Hope this answers your question.
cu2cool, I believe you may have it a little wrong on the part of UMA. Like in the link I posted before, UMA isn't hardware or chip dependent, though phones like Blackberrys have a dedicated chip for the purpose. UMA is software dependent, and most likely radio dependent. My proof is in this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=807116 taken from a Nexus1 thread, which phone didn't have UMA support before some crafty guys worked it out. Don't get me wrong I'm no expert on the subject, just from reading around, I'm fairly certain its "possible" and all it should take is a crafty person with the know-how to make it work.
Edit: Just found this (actually had it opened for weeks and forgot I had it) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843433&page=6 a dev page for WIP on UMA-HD2_TMo-Android.
I finally just forked over the cash for a Mytouch 4G, and it was money well spent even if just for the wifi calling alone.

I think I just saw something that might help. It came out on the 11th of February. http://www.xda-developers.com/windows-mobile/windows-mobile-voip-sip-updated/
please make making a tethering app and wifi router a first priority in for the wp7... developers
MOD EDIT: Tethering instructions at post 11 onwards
The chances of this happening without 3rd party socket support is extremely low if not impossible. Until Microsoft allows sockets tethering will have to come from Microsoft themselves.
i though that that the phone would be capable , but that there would be no support or apps unless the cell service requested
That rumor turned out to be false. At launch WP7 will not tether but I'm sure we will see an update within the next couple of months that will add it. Since updates come from Microsoft directly I don't think carriers can block it.
I wouldn't say that carriers can't block it. If you look at the iPhone, it was blocked in the carrier settings on the phone.

Also, the carriers has a way detect you are using the phone as tethering or web-browsing, if your data plan doesn't include tethering, the tethering feature means nothing.
Doing some research to upgrade from my dumb ass x10 (was my in between phone) and found on Optus Australia site that Omnia 7 can be used as a tether, so I'm guessing that they are not blocking it.
But hey who knows till I get this next week bundled with an Xbox Kinect - woot.

There's a 99% chance that the site is wrong. WP7 does not support tethering of any kind right now.

Yes I know wp7 does not support tethering now, but it will.

I tether occasionally with my ATT Tilt running WM6.5.
I am about to receive my Focus this week, and I am confident that there will be the ability to tether this phone soon. History is on my side. In the meantime, I will pop my sim card into the Tilt if I need to tether.
The iPhone was a locked OS at first, the jailbreaks came soon, as did tethering.
As far as ATT being able to detect when it tethers, I doubt it.
In the past, the theory was they could detect the user agent string for the web browser as "not a mobile browser" but since the WP7 browser is a full browser, I see it as a simple matter for the tethering app to replace the user agent string on the fly, so the data stream appears to be for the bundled browser and not a desktop browser. Your laptop will browser will give you a normal experience on each page.
ATT has a money clamp on the data usage anyway, so I doubt they really care that much since as you would hit the 5 GB limit of the laptop tethering plan, you would have paid $65 ($25 for 2GB+$10 for 1GB+$10 for 1GB+$10 for 1GB). They have lost nothing.
How to use USB tethering on the Focus

Can someone who's done this post the usb drivers that get downloaded? I'm running on windows server 2008 R2 and suspect that it's not pulling them down because of this. I switched the phone to tethering mode, but when it connects and tries to add the driver it doesn't pull anything down.
guys i am in india ....i bought this phone for its awesome features unware of the feature of lack of video calls through 3g network....
i am still trying to figure out how to make a video call through 3g...
in nokia symbian os there is an option of making either a voice call or a video call....is there an option like this in motorola atrix...
guys i am trying very desperately for this....
i have tried fring and other video calls providing softwares but it requires the caller on the other end to also log in to fring or other video call software....
pls suggest me a software which on installation into my phone will alllow me to make as well as receive video calls from anyone with 3g video call facility on the other side....
thank u
Hello, by chance have you tried tango? Its in the app store I heard good things but haven't got to try it yet
Or fring ?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
No, there is no native app for android that doesn't require both parties to be logged in yet. That feature is called google voice video chat, and is currently available only on the motorola xoom, and other honeycomb devices.
I think he means video calling people over the 3G network not internet. I understand this protocol is not implemented in the States, so most of you guys who are in the States would not understand by this.
He wants to make a video call to any other 3G phone that supports video call. Without using the internet and without using any app. My Samsung Galaxy S has that feature. Im having Dell Streak and since its made for the US market, it is like the Atrix.. it doesnt support 3G video call.
Sigh. Galaxy S is made in Korea and the korean has 3G video call protocol implemented there. i think thats why they have.
Qik video app can do this they just release a new version altough sound is bad and video is upside down
maybe i am not using the search tool properly nor posting this in app section.
But anyone know any way to do so?
my xperia x10 is half dead already i would like to 3g tether to tablet for 3g uses.
I search the market for app, none of them seem to support it. Is there another method? I am not too great with this sort of things
would like a detail guide or explanation.
thank you.
p.s: also i would like to ask, is it possible to use rocket mobile 3g fingers from rogers (i live in canada) to obtain 3g? sorry i am not technical so no idea how these things goes.
I don't know anything about rocket mobile, but I just downloaded Quick Wifi Hotspot from the market yesterday and it worked fine while at the restaurant. I left the network open and named it my name and connected via the tablet with no issues. It's also free and that is helpful Hopefully it's compatible with whichever rom/android version you are using. I have an HD2 with an Android 2.3 ROM based on C7 (I think that's all the requisite info).
I have cheap zip cricket cell phone. I do love crickets service here in my area.thou some say its lame elsewhere.
Anyway I rooted my cell installed wireless tether.and when I turn it on my tablet or my notebook will connect automatically and its great for most things even tried Netflix yesterday. Pared with crickets unlimited plan for 50.00 a month.
Set wireless tether to Mac address security lots of people will try to connect.to use your internet.some just do it automatic ..
thank you, the reason i posted this is because my x10 still run on grandpa software (at least not 1.6) android 2.1.
Acer have an instruction on how to enable portable wi-fi option on phone and ad-hoc but 2.1 doesn't have that option yet.
since my phone is already half dead (thank to SE's crappy product), i don't know if i can root it and install custom rom before it brick or dead completely.
i will check out that method thanks.

How ever , in Offcial displays and websites show us "with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor at its heart, missing only the ability to make calls."
though it is Android 4.1, they cancel the function of making call. For fear that galaxy camera would impact the selling of S III.
>>>>>>>>>Network 4G、3G , HSPA+ 21Mbps (Not include Gsm communication)
Is it the problem of hardware ? Seach the words "call" in the web ,many replies show that they are confused the cancel of call function.
Don't worry, I or someone else in these forums will hack its core and make sure that we can make calls with it.
The galaxy camera CANNOT make calls.......It's just a camera with android on it.........you can put a 3G or 4G enabled sim on it to use its data(like the iPad),and NOT make calls......If you are interested in buying a phone with a good camera....wait for the Nokia Lumia phones with Pureview
Also S-ON/S-OFF are terms only for HTC devices......it's sort of their way to prevent access to the NAND

The reason that works is because it shares a modem with a device that can make phone calls. I'm not saying this camera doesn't. I'm saying don't go flashing that modem.
I have a galaxy camera inbound next week. Expect some threads in original development and development from me. I will be releasing Heimdall One-Click and CASUAL for this device shortly after I get ahold of it. I will also film some XDATVs on it. Then I will send it to Josh Groce at MobileTechVideos.com to get a JTAH flash on it.
I'm very excited to see what this thing can do
It can be done on a very simple way using CM10 : by enabling in build.prop the phone functions and using a Bluetooth headset. However, I think CM10 with Galaxy Camera is a no go, as all the main features are in TouchWiz on this device.
The harder method would be to modify the build.prop to let you make phone calls and then install the dialer&contacts apps .apk from S3 or Note 2. Here will be some compatibility issues, but they could be solved. The only thing you will need is a Bluetooth headset, which will run as speaker and mic.
Samsung can't remove the phone features in Android, just they can disable these functions, which we will enable again .
L.E.: The modem should not be a problem, because this device can receive 3G data for Internet via microSIM, correct?
just gonna state the obvious
Could you just use Skype/Google voice (us)
Would this not work? (Maybe need to grab apks as not supported) but wouldn't that work?

Yes, that will work. It's running Android and that's the only real requirement for those apps. It will probly also support Google+ Hangouts. Native phone calls are a different story though.

Surely you could make Voip calls on it. The device has a speaker, a microphone and data connectivity via Wifi or 3g/4g. You might look silly making calls on a camera but if you paired that with a Bluetooth adapter, then you'd be in business.

I wouldn't care about looking silly, but it would be a perfect device for holidays (or small get-outs and concerts/events). You run around making pictures all day, making very occasional phonecalls and whatsapping/skyping a bit in between .. if this device had call-capability I could leave my $600 smartphone at home and worry about only one expensive device in my pocket.
Besides, I'd laugh my ass off at people looking at me making a phonecall with this haha
The "what the ?!" faces will be priceless
The mic placement is no good for making traditional phone calls, the call quality will be terrible I think. I was really hoping this thing could make calls, I basically only use apps on my nexus 7 now and I only need a phone to take photos and make calls, this could have been it.
