The vibrants supposed to have 512 mb of ram but when I check it with the android system app it says 325 max and whats worse it says I have only like 90 mb free where's the other 187 ( granted I know some is used by OS) and how come my ram usage is so high not running much smooth calendar fancy widgets excuse Me if this was answered
I would venture that it is because the kernel isn't using HighMem. I think we could probably compile the kernel from source and enable highmem like we did on the Nexus.

I read on another forum that the advertised RAM is 512M RAM but the Kernel on the SGS can only see 256M RAM.
Can current owners confirm this is indeed the case?
This might be slowing the phone if this is indeed the case.
Crap. Since it is running Android 2.1, there shouldnt be any problems whatsoever. Why dont you download Advanced task Killer and check out the amount of free ram yourself?

I don't own the device but am considering it.
I was wondering if one of current owners could check this and let us know.
Until 2.2 (froyo) isn't the most ram Android can read 256mb?
Nope.
The EVO reads 512M and is on 2.1
i believe the Desire too.
The N1 got a modied Kernel on 2.1 that was able to see 512M.
Ahh my bad sorry
I believe i read in another forum that it's using an outdated kernal. Someone can make a custom rom and fix it eventually.
First of all it does have 512 MB of ram. The problem is that the current kernel can only use 0x50000 KB of it. After reading a bit of the dpram module it seems that samsung report to the kernel that 0x50000 KB is the memory size of the device. I think they did it due to the aforementioned bug.

Do we know if 2.2 will fix this ?
2.2 should but i hope some talented dev can unlock the additional memory before that
I'm using Android System app to check and its showing me...
Ram: Max: 325Mo Free: 132Mo 40% (i have seen higher FREE Mo).
and when i run like almost all the apps i can think of, right now i have like 20 apps running I checked on (Advanced Task Killer) to see what is running, than I went back to Android System and now its showing me
Ram: Max: 325Mo Free: 35Mo.
I can notice lag but it still runs faster than my last N95 8gb. (With nothing running).
Hope this helps.
Hey everybody,
Most of the people says "You have only 256 mb Ram on your Device, you don't get Honeycomb!"
Pah! Are you kidding me?
Sibere did a test in the emulator with same specs as Gen8 Devices
Code:
[email protected]:/proc # cat meminfo
cat meminfo
MemTotal: 256596 kB
MemFree: 54432 kB
Buffers: 40 kB
Cached: 109068 kB
HC uses just 93 MB Ram
Froyo needs ~50-60 MB Ram!^^
So, thats good news i think
Just want to tell it everybody..
What do you say about this?
Thanks goes to sibere for testing
To be fair, Sibere did that with the SDK, correct. The full source Honeycomb might use a bit more than that. I hope we can run it though, I'm sure Honeycomb would probably run OK. But I get enough launcher reloads using Froyo after playing games or browsing the Internet. If Honeycomb uses more RAM than Froyo, I wonder how much more it would have to reload stuff after using Internet browsers or games, plus if it uses more RAM, that would mean when it reloads the launcher it would take longer to load, right. This may not be as much of an issue in Honeycomb because I'm sure it manages memory better than Froyo, but it still leaves me wondering and we wont truly know until someone gets Honeycomb running on our Gen 8s.
I'll keep hoping that it can run Honeycomb and that we eventually get it (or Gingerbread)
93Mb is just the system and the launcher.
As you start installing apps, some of them will need services to run in the background, sucking precious MB of RAM.
So yes HC could run on 256Mb, but we will never get an user experience as good as a device with 512Mb or 1GB or RAM.
I'd love to try HC on my 70. I don't run many apps anyway at the same time so if 90mb is needed for the core OS, 160mb for apps is enough for me.

there will never be 160mb free if you have 90core
on a nook with hc you have less then 200free on a running system.

Ram used for GPU is about 4mb. (adjustable in kernel build parameters if I'm not mistaken)
The thing is: Do we really want HC now? Look at the HC market... almost empty.
We'd better have gingerbread for now and wait for ice cream sandwich IMHO.
+1 for GB.
Better GC + SIP is prob. worth the hassle
Moved to proper forum.
So I have the original htc mytouch 3g and i see that the system only has 112 mb of usable ram so I am wondering if there is a way to make the system use all 192 mb of built in ram that it is supposed to have if anybody has a way to do this you can email me at [email protected] or pm me eather one works
No. There are two physical variants of the HTC Magic. One ships with more RAM than the other.
no crap i knew that one has more ram then the other but the mytouch 3g has 192 mb of ram but only has 112 usable so i want to let the system use all 192 mb of ram.
dont post a reply if you dont know what the heck your talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The radio needs ram too. And so do various other hardware components.
Remapping camera ram will get you 16mb (if I remember right). You might be able to take some from the gpu and break 3d. Idk what else you could do
You will have to modify a kernel to do that (it's already pretty much maxxed out)... and I think that camera mem is only 8mb... I remember ezterry saying that ~1mb could be squeezed out of the kernel in his 2708+ thread and so far he has helped us gain +14mb (112mb free)
If you know kernel development, the file you are looking to modify is arch/arm/mach-msm/board-sapphire.h
Hello, I own the 6 GB ram version, and I think multitasking could be seriously improved.
I'm using ex kernel manager with stock ROM and kernel, and when I check the ram use it is always MAX 75%.
No matter how many apps I open, I can't use more than my 75% total or ram.
It means that I'll have always at least 1400 mb of ram which is huge!
Does anyone know how to be able to use more ram?
I think having 500-600 free ram is enough...
So idk what's causing this I'm on havoc os 3.7 official and I've noticed that a lot of times if I have multiple apps open then switch to another app that one app will like close and re load the entire app as of it was killed because I dident have enough ram or something well when Icheck memory I have 4gb ram but my apps r force closing all the time or resetting as if I'm out of ram but my ram usage never goes up past like 2.4 GB so like why is my phone not using all my ram and how can I change it because this is annoying and I should be able to utilize my ram if not then why even have that much ram
Test a kernel manager like this https://github.com/SmartPack/SmartPack-Kernel-Manager/releases then low memory killer and or an other kernel
OK so the default values were low like 128 and 256 and about around there for everything in LMK so I changed them as high as they would go for the most part based on my total amount of ram and the lower the value the less ram an app is allowed to have before it is killed right?
Actually I think if the value is higher the apps will get killed more frequently so I guess I want them lower then?
