I am new to the forum, and I just bought a new G1 off craigslist tonight. ($150, new in box, with two protective cases). Why should I root and modify it? What are the benefits? What will I be able to do that I can't do right now? Links?
Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
EDIT: Oh, I should have said that I am not looking for another hobby or technological fun (I get plenty of that!). I just need to know what I have to gain before I dig in. Thanks.
If you have to ask that, just don't bother.
soo many XXXX on here.

No need to be offensive. Post reported.
My reply is perfectly valid.. If you don't even know why you want root, what's the point..? Just be happy with what you've got.
Do a search for "Root" and just read.
Tethering (use your 3g connection on your laptop)
Apps to SD (the g1 only has a few megabytes of memory for apps/games, so you can use a lot more)
Eclair(live wallpapers, more features)
Multitouch(if your used to the iphone/ipod touch)
Hero/Sense (to get a different android experience)
SPEED! (some roms like superd/fastTest/CSDI are fast as hell!)
Themes (so you can make your phone look any way you want (pink notification bars ftw))
Thats about it.

Really, if you aren't looking for something you need to put a lot of work into, rooting and modifying your device probably isn't for you. Unless you want to be left with outdated and obsolete features. There are a lot of things about rooting that you really should keep up with. And if you can't make the commitment to it, it's probably best to just skip this.
But like I said before, you can do it now, forget about everything else and just keep outdated and obsolete features.
THANKS! It is a beautiful thing when a person chooses to be helpful and kind. I appreciate it.
I guess apps to the SD and the increased speed are the only two things that I would be interested in.
If the phone memory fills up, will anything else I install automatically go the the 2gb sim card?
I do not have a data plan and plan on just connecting to home and work wi-fi networks when I need to access the Internet. Will moding the G1 help with anything wi-fi related?

Don't get too interested. Due to the G1's slow processor, most multi-touch will be more like.. a bad synonym that I can't think of. Upgrading to the Nexus last week from this device.. was worth it.

That's basically what I meant, but with more words.
Well, after a couple days of using the phone and downloading productivity apps and games that I think I will use on a regular basis, I only have 10MB of space left on the phone. So, it looks like I will be rooting/modding out of necessity.
Why root/mod the G1?

Wow, my post used to help someone else. Guess it was not a stupid question after all. LOL.
Personaly I like being able to run Eclair on my phone. I just like the look and feel of it. That and using setcpu helps battery life. Just my 2 cents.

Well, it's over a year old, and something in the Android world is pretty much outdated after a few weeks
But here is some other reasons:
1) Not sure about this. Although, i'm pretty sure i remember using a multi-touch gallery a while ago.
2) I'm not sure why you'd want that anyway, it's pretty pointless. Also, that's only true for the home screen. There are apps on the marketplace that have 180° rotation. Cyanogen has also built in 180° rotation into his Nexus ROM so it could be possible on the G1.
3) I have no idea what the author means by this. Saving apps to your SDcard only means you can potentially install thousands of apps because they get saved to the SDcard instead of the phone. Also, i believe you can move the CACHE to the sdcard now too.
4) Downloading themes is very easy and incredibly simple to do now with Metamorph. It's pretty hard to 'soft-brick' your phone with this.
5) Not true at all. Everything is explained in very detailed tutorials. The only way you can mess up the Linux commands is if you can't read. Obviously, having a knowledge of Linux is very handy.
6) The firmware we have on our phones are MILES better than anything T-mobile releases, purely because devs get the OTA, mod it, and release something awesome, usually, the same day. Oh, you'd also lose root if you flashed one of these OTA's.
I'm not blaming the author of that thread at all, It's just things have improved ten fold since this time last year
Cyanogen has his 180 degree rotation in his newest Donut ROM (if you even really want it?)
If you use nandroid, there's never a reason to worry about a soft-brick. I nandroid every other day actually. Flashing something or not.
Finally, the person who got me into rooting was still running cyanogen 4.0.4 about a month ago and still loved it. you don't have to be "dedicated." of course, you'll be lacking some features you might find useful if you never update, but you'll still always be on top of a stock phone.
And, yes, meltus' famous louder volume hack. (If it wasn't for this I never would have been up for work with my mytouch alarm.)
Apps2sd - get a bigger sdcard. I have an 8gig class 6. payed 18 dollars for it on ebay (with free shipping) got it in 3 days. and yes, apps2sd might not free up your internal storage because of cache and all that.... but: it lets you install more apps. and: there are apps the clear your cache. you can even set it to clear periodically (mines clears every 24 hours.)
yes: I would suggest rooting, but I would also suggest that you read VERY closely and learn wtf to do before you ever even try.
this may seem like a silly question, but i have to return my incredible bec they are sending me a replacement, dead pixel, so before i try to root i would like to have it unrooted before i send it back...
so how do you unroot it?
thanx all
At the risk of starting a flamewar (and none of this is directly aimed at the OP):
A lot people need to chill on this. This root method is not ready for prime time yet (that's why they made the disclaimer that it's only really for power users).
As an average user, there is almost nothing gained by having root at this point (other than removing city id and MAYBE gaining tethering). I mean seriously, people who don't even know how to install the android sdk on their computers have no business attempting this.
The main reason most people want root is for custom roms and there aren't any yet.
To answer your question, yes, you can easily undo it with a factory wipe/flash, but again, what's the point in trying it when you have nothing to do with the privileges?

BOOO!
I've been seeing this kind of presumptuous junk pop up again in the Inc thread around the root issue, just like it used to around root season in late '08 for the G1. The one lesson I learned was this:
STOP TELLING PEOPLE THEY'RE NOT SMART/GOOD/CRAFTY ENOUGH TO ROOT!
And if you haven't checked recently, there are a ton of root-only apps on the market. Maybe he just likes #-signs better than $-signs. Whatever his reasons are, just let people be. This forum wouldn't exist if it weren't for natural curiosity.
really though at this point it's kinda based on the SD card you have an timing. to unroot though you just download and run the RUU on the forums here.

Dude,
Aside from the fact that they can break stuff (up to and including bricking their phone - yes I realize this process resulting in a brick is unlikely, but it's still possible), there's also another good reason... security. A lot of these people aren't 'linux guys' and don't even really understand what exactly 'root' even means. I bet $20 that if you had everyone in this forum in a room and walked around with a clipboard asking people 'What is UID 0?' maybe 20-30% of people would know the answer. That means that up to 80% of them probably don't quite understand all of the things inside this can of worms they're trying to open.
My comments weren't intended to be presumptuous, or to look down on people, or to thumb my nose at them, etc. I'm only pointing out that for average (or probably even most) users, there aren't really any everyday reasons to go through this.... especially if you don't know what you're doing. All risk, no reward. And that's exactly why the developers of the method are advising these types of users to wait for something that's more suitable for mass consumption.
Ya I love my phone the way it is, all I wanted to do is wifi tether haha. I rooted just fine and im no expert at all. It took about 20 minutes.
Thank you! To the answer on how to quickly unroot. I appreciate it...

Is there a way to unroot without wiping the phone?
Since when did wiping the phone remove root?
If you RUU the phone to unroot it is wiped and will need to re-do all the settings. I dont want to have to do that.
I know there's starting to be a lot of discussion on best methods to perma-root, backups, custom roms, etc.; however, the one thing that I've noticed sticking out was the S-Off 'hack'.
I'm still following all the various threads as best I can and granted, I don't have any hands-on experience yet if S-Off is not required to flash custom roms or do backups/restore and such after perma-root (from what I've read - correct me if I'm wrong), so what exactly is the benefit of doing so?
Search for what is s-off ??
Nah... why is it so hard to use the search box,
Go check the rooting flashing basics TUTORIAL thread
Everything is explained there.
I did read... apparently I'm blind though or it wasn't there previously. =>_>=
(On a side-note though, S-Off in search yields too many results about methods to achieve S-Off as opposed to what it does.)

When you go into the bootloader, you will see a notification saying "S-ON". This stands for "Security On" and it means that write protection is being turned on during the boot process and recovery images will not be applied without a valid signatur so when s-off you can use custom recovery.

I have a a question as i dont fully understand s-off either......
Is this soley to do with how clockwork or the desire z works ? By that i mean that on my hero im 's-on' and its never been an issue flashing different recovery images....or is it only required for the initial flash from stock recovery to custom as your using the bootloader?
I know that on my hero i could flash a recovery from a recovery so there was no requirement to use the bootloader.....
cheers in advance
You bought a house (phone), they didn't give you the keys (password). Are you just going to sit there outside the front door for the rest of your life, or are you going to break in (hack)?
Right... you own it. That means that you get to go inside (USE IT!!!).

I believe the thread was asking about the relevance of enabling S-Off....
Basically what the man is trying to say is why be a prisoner to the smartphone developers and except what they give you when you know for a precise fact your device is capable of doing more. Having root access allows you to have full customization of your phone in addition to performing way faster then the stock hardware that they give you. Don't be follower, but if a whole smartphone community say its worth don't ask questions, do it. Then you'll learn something.

EVERYONE on this forum understands the benefits of unlocking your phone through rooting and custom ROMs or we wouldnt be here.....Thats not the point
This thread was asking about the relevance/importance/purpose of the S-Off feature....and neither of you have answered anything to do with it
Anyone can follow instructions, but not everyone understands what it is they are doing.....and its by asking questions (like the one posted on this thread!!!) that enables us to better understand and apply in future.....now if everyone made posts like you have we definately wont learn anything! lol
If you hero is s-off then there will be certain things you can't do, lie change you splash screen.
However s-on back then was no as strong protection as s-on now, back then we were able to flash a new recovery and h-boot easily even if s-on but now htc have perfected the protection to make it a lot harder, basically we are very restricted in what we can "hack" while s-on.
In Lenny we trust,.... to say it in plain English.

No, you're not understanding. ROOT is like having access to the back yard (in addition to the front), because the gate was unlocked. s-off is like having the key to the front door.

Actually, 32A/B s-off and s-on are very similar to vision s-off and s-on. And similarly, it tended to be s-off in SPL ALONE.... i.e. the OLD permaroot method for vision.
Go look into DREAM JTAG thread, it explains it all. You need s-off to, for example, write hboot when all you've got is oemsbl -- and jtag was used to *temporarily* s-off the 32B's in order to accomplish that.
And BTW: You've got your ON's and OFF's reversed.... S = security... so S-ON = SECURITY ON = locked out. S-OFF = SECURITY OFF = full access.

Though, if the original poster is like me, then this is the first place he's read that S-Off/On means Security-Off/On.
While we're on this topic, apart from the obvious benefits of having S-OFF, are there any drawbacks or things to watch out for with it off? Is it easier to brick with it off etc?

Just got my shift today, and so far I'm head over heels with it I know I can't give a legitimate review until I've had it for at least a few weeks, so I'll make sure to pop back in after I've had it for a bit. The only complain I have at this point is the volume button placement; I've been accidentally tapping it as I close the slider. I have found a solution though! Get in the habit of placing your thumb a bit more to the right while using the keybboard, OR moving one or both of your thumbs to the top and bottom of your phone before closing the slider.

Glad to hear you're liking it so far! I've had mine for two days now and I'm proud to say I'm also head over heels.
I didn't think I'd be able to stand running Sense again, but it really flies on this phone. Volume placement doesn't bother me. Only thing that does is bloatware (man HTC really put a lot on this one!) Most of that is already gone, however.
I was looking around and it seems like there is no permanent root yet. Did you temp root and remove the bloatware? What are the downside to temp rooting over per rooting?

Yes I did.
The only downside I see is use of what root users deem necessary apps doesn't stick on reboot. Well, that and the obvious lack of rom selection.
S-Off is just a whole different game. I'm used to using fastboot commands, etc.
We'll see permaroot before too long and I'm sure we'll have great rom and theme selection after that.
Sorry for the stupid questions, but what exactly is a ROM? I'm still pretty new to the whole Android scene ;( S-off and Fastboot Commands as well

Think of a rom as a modified, sometimes heavily, version of the phone's operating system.
You'll see AOSP roms, that's Android the way Google meant it to be.
Sense roms, modified versions of HTC's releases.
I would give you a few great links but I'm on phone at the moment. I'll get them to ya a little later.
Haven't temp-rooted my shift because I thought I read that any bloatware you remove will come-back after re-boot. Can you comment?

I've seen reports of both.
Everything that I have removed has stayed gone. I haven't rebooted, but my phone has dies, so that's essentially the same thing.
I'm waiting for perm root and some healthy ROM development before I go back to the Shift. I thought thse things were like roted within 2 weeks of thier release though?
@Nmott93 - I've gathered a small collection of links to better guide you through your questions than I myself can in words.
You'll notice most users in these forums are extremely helpful. I think the biggest pet peeve is when people ask questions that are all ready answered in the op. Don't worry about them though!

Currently it cannot be done. The source code for the ROM will be released soon and soon after you will have more ROMS, better kernels and rooting. Until then its a wait period for you. Its good practice to wait after an update (OTA) is released to the wild because you lose root and essentially you are stuck with that ROM until things are released etc.
Hope that helps and welcome to XDA.!
How long....?
I'm a n00b and I know there is no root method with a 2.3 OTA if you are S-On. The bootloader is locked.
Question: Whats a typical time-frame for somebody to do the hack? Days, weeks, Months.
From what I gather and read this work-a-round is going to be harder.
The reason I ask is that I am about to kank my Comcast wireless service. Increased from $26.99 to $49.99. I think I'm better off paying Sprint $30 for the hotspot. I am better off waiting a bit, then root to get the free hotspot tether to work.
FWIW - Maybe there should be a sticky titled "EVO 4G 2.3 Hack Update! - Sprint: 4 , XDA:3" One post per day, saying just "nada, zilch, nothing, - patience grasshoper"
Anything to see the status is No Can Do.
People will be mercilessness with asking the same ridiculous question.

i would say average is a few weeks to a month based on previous ota getting rooted. however google seems to have done a good job at plugging all the holes and it may be considerably longer. no way to know how long really. just depends how much scouring it takes to find an exploit. take the rageagainstthecage exploit, that wasnt discovered until about 6 months after froyo was release iirc
I get aggravated to, but the guy asked the question in a decent enough. non-naab way.
Truth is, if you have 2.3.3 and you're S-on, there is no root, currently.
Give it some time, be patient and use the time to read as much as you can and get an idea of what you want and how you want to set it up once a root method is developed.
Specifically, I'd learn APS2SD/SD Card partitioning, Which ROMS suit your needs the best and how you want to set your screens up

op asked in a manner befitting someone who has not searched or tried to answer for himself hence is why he got some flammage. Schlenkerla, however, asked in an educated and obviously researched way which earned him a proper reply.
no root? How about another option?
ok, i have been reading every single day on how to re-root my evo. Now, im not asking if there is a root method yet, however i need to ask this.
Is is possible to revert the hboot, firmware, to a previous version. I an unable to install a ruu OS because im s-on of course. I would just like to know if there is ANY way to revert back to 2.2 so i can just root the normal way and start flashing roms daily again... It can be complicated, im highly technical, but i cant find anyhting talking about a way to do this.

not possible at this point. the 2.16 hboot will not allow an older version to be flashed.
Crap, that sucks! thanks for the info.
I am guessing the same goes with a factory reset.
Btw - what all does factory reset do?

Forums also don't need the same question asked in 50 different threads.

Or people running around being jerks on it. If a complete stranger asked you the same question for the 50th time in real life would you blow up in their face about it? No. So why would you on the internet? The internet makes people feel empowered to be rude because they aren't face to face. Let's just keep in mind that person on the other end is a human being, and we all are lazy and all don't search for stuff ok?
I can't tell you how many times my husband has said "I can't find the ketchup" and I say "did you look behind the milk?". The answer is always no, but that's where it is!
Maybe its just guys that have the problem with not knowing how to search.

Because if someone asks you a question you've heard over and over, they may not be in a position to do a simple search for the answer before they ask....

Look, I am not a flamer (at least , not where noobs are concerned). I normally just ignore questions that have been answered 1000 times. Believe it or not, I am actually a pretty polite dood, especially to people I don't know. That being said, the thought process that starts with "everybody does it" and ends with "fvk it, i'll just ask instead of bothering to search" is just wrong. Feel free to search through every thread I have ever started and show me were I started a thread asking a question that had already been done to death. Do it. People get flamed because others want the questions to STOP! They WANT noobs to be too afraid of flaming to ask a question. I was gone on vacation, and away from from XDA for basically a solid week. During that vacation, I managed to smash my phone's screen. As soon as I got home, I put in for my replacement, and immediately started searching for root methods for the newest OTA. It took less than 10 minutes to determine that there was no news...with the exception of this, which obviously is not very helpful.
In short: Don't start a new thread unless you are SURE that there is not already a thread about your topic. If you decide to do it anyway, don't complain when you get flamed. It is your own fault. Human nature is no excuse for anything. We are humans and have the power to observe both ourselves and the world around us, and we have the ability to modify our behavior based on those observations. For instance, I was absolutely positive, when I began writing this response, that at least one person would feel the need to flame me for it. Go ahead. I can take it. I put my big-boy pants on.
