Most likely a dumb question but if I got the update would it go through? I am running a rooted droid x currently so I wasnt sure if I needed to unroot it before I can update. I appreciate your answers!
Thanks

I'm not sure it's altogether clear on what you need to do. The more I read the more I'm building up an answer that sounds like:
"If you've simply rooted and changed anything that it probably won't matter. But if you've changed things (i.e. removed bloatware) the OTA is likely to fail, but we aren't 100% sure. To be most cautious you should restore all removed applications, restore all permissions, unroot and THEN do the update."
Not sure that helps...

I just realized the links aren't in that thread anymore. You can find almost exactly the same thread over at AndroidForums.

Sorry, but that is bad advice right there.
It's OK if people want to roll back to a factory configuration, but there is simply no good reason to over-write a 1.47 (or 1.49 S-OFF) bootloader with a bootloader that will possibly prevent root forever in order to do that.
Keep your options open, even if you want a "factory" phone.
Once again, there is nothing "new" about the so-called "official RUU" - it is THE SAME THING AS LEAK-V3.

meh... it's exactly what he asked. my guess is it's "going back to the store."
perhaps you should clarify for him then... as in your post, the bolded red text may lead him to install leak 3. better advice?
oh well... to each their own.
edit: had options been asked for, then those would have been presented.
in any case... so i'm out

If you want a plain phone then just go with JCase's "Plain Jane" Rom, if you really want to lose root for some reason then I guess you could flash the new 2.1 RUU but I'm not entirely sure why you would want to lose root though. Then again I'm not you and that's not my phone so good luck in whatever decision you decide
I just did the long and somewhat confusing process of unrooting. The reason I asked was to find a simple way to unroot because my trackball broke and I needed to use my warranty. It worked and I am already back with root on my "like-new" Droid Eris again!
This topic should be a sticky. For those whom want their facory warranty back for the sake of obtaining replacement phone. [STICKY]"How To Unroot Your Eris". This would be exelent. Note to moderator, this would be much appreciated.
So I am pretty new to Android and am looking to root my Droid X.
Just a few quick questions:
1. If I root now will I not be able to get 2.2 when that comes out later? Will I just have to unroot? Would it be bad for me to get rid of the bloatware (eg the .604 update required that certain apps be present)?
2. I know that the Droid 1 is going to get 2.2 with root by updating to a different ROM than the one that is OTA. What about Droid X users? Would we just have to stay at 2.1 (with root) until someone figures out how to root the 2.2 OTA update?
2. If my phone begins having problems can I unroot in a way that Verizon can never tell that I had root in the first place? Would this only be possible if the phone is working "well enough" to go through the unroot process?
3. Any real reasons that you guys would know of NOT to root? I am mostly concerned with improving battery life and just getting the few cool apps that are made possible via root.
I'm rooted and I'm about to send my device back to Verizon when they send me the new one. All you have to do is unroot and then restore the phone. Acoustic to factory defaults.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
hmmm, I think I'm being fooled with the number of questions there somehow. Can't figure out how though...
But anyway:
1. Yes, if you root now and 2.2 comes out, you can just unroot and upgrade. But you'll lose root most likely. I personally wouldn't remove bloatware at this point, just freeze with Titanium Backup, because you'll need those apps to upgrade. You can just unfreeze, make sure permissions are set right and install 2.2 when it rolls out.
2. Yes, at this point it's either stay rooted with 2.1 or upgrade to 2.2 and lose root. No custom ROMS yet.
2 (again). Yes, you can unroot if the phone is working. Just make sure all the bloat is in place, and Verizon won't know. As for the second question, if you brick your phone, you won't be able to do anything until we have access to custom ROMs. Basically you need to know what you're doing. If you're not sure how it'll affect the phone, better not touch it.
3. I'd say rooting greatly improves experience with this phone. You'll be able to install apps that manage your memory, help you save battery, and just do cool customizations =) Just as I said, make sure you know it's safe w/e you're doing.
I noticed there is a lot more development going on with the EVO(which I currently have) than with the Droid X... Is it difficult to develop for motorola, are there not enough developers working on this phone?
I ask because I currently have an EVO and I love that I can customize everything from the boot screen to what the volume buttons do... but the internet is slow on this thing and I can't take advantage of 4G most of time.
I'm planning on getting a Droid X but I just don't see anything as far as custom hacks and things... Any 2 cents welcomed
I'm sure this question is posted somewhere on here but I couldn't find it. This is my first post.
A friend of mine has a rooted Droid X with 2.1 right now. He wants to get updated to 2.2 but he doesn't want/need a new ROM or anything like that. The only reason he's rooted is so he can get free wifi hotspot.
What's the easiest/quickest way to get him updated to 2.2 (preferably without having to wipe)?

He can do the 2.2 OTA update, but he'll lose root. Of course, you can find a handful of 2.2 rooting methods on this board, so no biggie.
Best rooting method
Ok. Thanks for the quick response! What's the easiest way to root 2.2? I'm really new to all this (if you can't already tell).

I followed these instructions. Not sure if they're the easiest, but I can confirm that they work. Helped a couple of friends root after OTA with these steps, as well.

Easier
Even easier than that, go check the Droid 2 forum for the 1-click root by DarkOnion and Faceless... the 1 click method works for both the D2 and the DX.

Hi all -
Im recieving my DX in the mail today, and i need to update it to 320/340, rather than using the fancy update methods, is it safe to use the verizon ota updates to achieve the upgrades if im going to flash liberty 1.5 to it?

Yes, it is perfectly ok to use the OTA update from Verizon. that is what I did. The phone may come with 2.3.34 depending on whether it has been sitting on a shelf or not...
If it only has 2.3.15 then go ahead and go into settings--> about phone---> and you should find the update option.
Then just make sure to install z4root, root the phone, then install koush's bootstrap recovery and take a backup of your phone in its original state. It's always good to have a place to go back to in case something happens to your phone.
I have attached z4root and the bootstrap apk. If you need help with flashing liberty 1.5 be sure to post back, and I, or probably many others on the forum will be happy to help you out.
My brother's X seemed to be stock on an older VZW firmware so I manually flashed him to the one just before .621, rooted with Pete's tools, used Voodoo to backup root, then flashed the .621 SBF.
Voodoo is reporting that su is backed up but when I hit restore it doesn't work. The app actually says it is restoring but I don't get root -- or an error message.
Thoughts?
Flashing the phone lost your root, Voodoo OTA only works if you take the OTA
****. Well I hope someone figures out how to root the .621, or a way to SBF back to an older version.
We all do buddy!
Actually, if I obtain the temporary root and nuke all the Verizon bloatware, will it stay gone once the phone reboots?

Maybe just for those on .621. The Droid X still has plenty of life.
Hopefully an exploit will be released soon.

Got lucky
Sure you've heard all the nightmare stories. Stupid me (twice actually - read on) accepted the OTA a few weeks ago and yes, lost root, didn't have or even know about OTA Rootkeeper. Ended up bricking then SBF'ing to 621 - blah blah blah...
Lost my phone. Had insurance, got phone replaced, installed firmware on replacement .605 - YES! got root, OTA Rootkeeper and backup, restored my full back up of everything via Titanium Backup and am now back to where I was right before the OTA. Have no reason or desire to take 621 again.
One day last week, passed out on sofa, phone starts with non-stop notifications, half asleep, I pick it up and click something to get it to stop making so much noise, pass out again. Wake up a while later, pick up my phone, unlock it to see something like "Update 621 applied successfully" FFFUUUUU!!!!!!!
OTA Rootkeeper definitely saved the day.
New every two coming up in May - WANT Galaxy Journal (note) - will wait for it.
It really is a crushing feeling when the root got lost and there (still) is no method to regain it so I feel for ya. The scariest part about this is that there is no known exploit now, it's been a long while and if this cannot be rooted (out of the box with 621) - it may very well be a sign of the times for MotoRizon which is why I'm bailing.
good luck.

I suggest anyone who has SBF'd to 621 or done the OTA and lost root, to check out this thread on RootzWiki. It isn't root for 621, but its a viable workaround. What was found was that an SBF for the milestone X (sbf 604) could be flashed over 621, and then zergrushv4 could be used to root that. Now to do this you MUST use SBF_flash on Linux, otherwise you will flash your baseband and your data will not work (this can be corrected by a call to VZW asking them to reprovision your data). Once on this 604 your phone will report as a Milestone, but you can install BSR/CWM and flash over to a *GB* rom (froyo roms will not work, IIRC) and after that it'll report as DX (this can also be achieved using a build.prop edit, but who really wants stock? If you do just want stock and you do this build.prop edit, you will need to freeze/remove the updater or else it'll freak and try to update and bug you incessantly.) Hope this helps! I've got a dx2 personally but I've been following this thread hoping to glean some information for when our next update drops (which was supposed to happen like a week ago... -__-)
