I think it's more like $150-$200 difference without a contract.
With the Galaxy S you get a front-facing camera, as well as an unlocked phone without carrier logos plastered on the front - which alone might be worth it to many.
I also much prefer the large middle button on the Galaxy S, than the 4-button array on the carrier phones.
I understand the front facing camera and I much prefer the design of the I9000 but if I buy Captivate it will be with 2yr contract and I don't know if it is enough to justify the extra cash especially if I cannot upgrade to iPhone 4 and sell for profit.
If my Samsung Captivate is rooted the software on both devices will be the same correct?

Do you live in an area with 1900mhz 3g coverage? If not, you will be able to use only edge with the i9000.
I bought the SGS for AT&T because of the front camera, no AT&T tampering, and I prefer the SGS look over the Captivate. Also, I don't live anywhere near 3g, so I'm okay with just edge. But it did cost me an arm and a leg.
Is there a map where I can see 850 mhz v 1900 mhz I found one but it is old

In my part of Los Angeles, I get 3G/H on AT&T probably 70% of the time, the rest is E.
well I decided to purchase the Samsung Captivate, but would still like a map in case I decide to switch within 30 days
It might also be possible for you to get the dumb phone data plan if you have an international version of the Galaxy S because AT&T probably wouldn't have their IMEI numbers... But then again, I'm not 100% sure on how they do their sweeps so dont quote me on this
Afaik you won't be able to use custom roms, becouse of diffrences that captivate has. So yes its worth to pay more...

Does it have all the features that are missing in different versions of this phone? Such as camera flash, front camera etc?
Bell Canada is getting this phone, but it won't have flash. Not sure what other differences it will have.

international version is the first version to come out and no it does not have camera flash, but it does have front camera. I got mine from ebay.

Is there a version of this phone that has all the features? Sounds like the Bell Canada one will be the same as the international one.
Most importantly, the international model is 900/2100 mhz only while at&t is 850/2100 mhz. So big difference in radios

AT&T, with their infinite wisdom, decided to remove the front facing camera from the Captivate as to keep video calling "exclusive" to the iPhone 4. Bastards!
Anyway, is there any version of the Galaxy S out there that supports 850/1900 3G AND comes with the front camera? I know Rogers is getting their version some time in September, but no word as to whether the front camera will be included, nor do I want to wait that long

It doesn't have support for 850mhz 3G, or does it? New York city is primarily 850, which is why I'm looking for an 850/1900 compatible model

Is it DISABLED or is has the camera been removed. I can't tell since there are indications of some kind of sensors on the front above and to the left of the AT&T logo. If it has been disabled there is the possibility of enabling it with firmware or other software. If it has been removed, no software in the world is going to make a front-facing camera work. Do you have actual information or is this speculation?

and north america phone network does not officially support face to face phone calls yet (we are so technologically backwards here... sigh... )

I get the impression at ATT is trying to lessen the load on their data network. That's why they remove the front camera. They don't remove it from iPhone because they have already forced apple to also disable facetime over 3G in iPhone 4.
Bell's old 2G network was CDMA (and EVDO for 3G), but their HSPA Network is Sim Card based. This includes 3.5G Data as well as normal Voice/Text. So yes, the Bell Samsung Vibrant will work on AT&T as it as the same HSPA bands (850/1900) and it has a front facing camera.
Any unlocked phone that supports HSPA 850 OR 1900 will work on Bell. Their towers broadcast both frequencies, but you'll lose reception in rural areas (and basements) with phones that only support 1900 (like the Euro Galaxy S). I have a Telstra HTC Desire that has only the 850 band, works perfectly in all areas.
I hope the bell version doesn't have a front camera or else I will be very sad with my version. But oh well. By the time bell releases their version, perhaps the 4g epic will be out. Hardware Keyboard + Flash > 15 extra GB
well even so, i still prefer the Euro SGS with only the 1900 band & 2100 band working for both voice and data.
if all else fails, i can always revert back to my old HTC Athena for 850 bands in dire emergencies

Yes it will work, and yes it's GSM based with SIM. If you do a quick check of just the BELL website, they Sell APPLE products guys.. which as we know are DEFINITELY GSM... not only that but they sell sim cards on the front page.
I'm getting one first day, and I don't even live in Canada! It's a QUAD-band phone for one thing, world phone dudes... secondly.. it does support 850 HSDPA AT&T bands (they use the iphone4's for christ sakes of course they aren't CDMA!)
on Wiki (it's cited but no clue on validity) for Bell you will see it's basically Canada's AT&T correct? Ma Bell owns a whopping 39% of Bell it appears.
The euro version is not on 850 for us AT&T users so do NOT get that one, get the Canadian 'Vibrant' as they're calling it. I'm sure Rogers will shoot one out soon as well.
Anyways I checked out AT&T on facebook and it appears they are 'testing' LTE late this year and implementing next. I think that's a crock of sheet myself, they do everything last and give their users sheeeeet! Verizon and Sprint and even MetroPCS are rolling it out ASAP it appears beginning next year Goodluck out there kids!

Yeah I had a desire for 2 months loved it, wanted to move to the Galaxy, the screen is at least 5x better no sh*t do a side by side, I had both for over a month until I sold my Desire for over $150 what I paid for it on ebay hah.
forgot release date is 2 days August 6th and it has the SAME hardware buttons as the i9000 not like the 'Tmobile USA Vibrant', so this pup will flash up stock i9000 rocks asap!
Also guys Bell charges a whopping $75 to unlock their phones, I asked their reps 2 weeks ago with all the info. BUT you can easily go here ( http://www.unlock2go.com/ ) I spoke to their rep a week ago (they're based in Florida, USA) and they'll be doing unlocking for it, $29 one time of course.... not bad.
As for the front facing camera (FFC) I think we all know that once sprint launches the epic and such we will see TONS of free apps on the market for video chat, even more so on your data service not just wifi. Gravy! Live nude chats with the lady for free hah

There are a couple of threads around at the moment that are eluding to a 850 MHz version of the Galaxy S. I'm currently using an original UK I9000 (900/2100 MHz) and am sick of the terrible service of 900 MHz carriers in Australia.
As such, when people start getting their hands on 850 MHz unlocked Galaxy S would they mind listing the following information.
- Reseller / Carrier (if they sell outright)
- Reseller / Carrier Shipping Destinations
- Price
- Firmware Version
- Locked / Unlocked
Semi-related, I contacted HTC Australia a couple of times when I was considering purchasing the Desire. HTC confirmed with me that all versions of the Desire are absolutely identical in terms of hardware. This confirmed the research I had performed that the HTC's/Nexus' radio chip has the ability to support both 850/900 MHz (not necessarily simultaneously). So it is definitely the case that flashing firmware onto your phone can convert a 900 MHz phone to a 850 MHz phone or vice versa. However, the firmware that needs to be flashed probably isn't directly flashable using standard android tools. You probably require physical access to the radio frequency chip to flash firmware onto the chip as well as corresponding firmware onto the phone. Where I'm going with all this is...
If we have any electronically inclined people on these forums, on top of the above information I would love to know if someone is willing to investigate whether it is possible to dump radio chip firmware from their 850 MHz device.

Thanks. I did notice that thread however, it's actually why I started this one. I just figured it would be a good idea to have a central place for people to upload information. So we can compare between resellers and learn a bit about the devices from each reseller once people get them in their hands.
I'm looking forward to see results from the New Zealand model, and Bell.

inside the phone, after you take out the battery it's a GT-i9000M
firmware was something J?5 (forgot the middle letter)
the Euro/Asia version is GT-i9000
they actually finally revealed the updated page, 2 weeks ago it didn't have the Tech Spec yet

No idea about the CA model, but the NZ model is the same as the european just with the different radio bands but no ideas about when it will be released, I emailed samsung NZ asking about it but no response yet. All phones sold in NZ are unlocked even apples's iphone 4 which has an exclusive contract with vodafone here is sold unlocked.
interestingly enough the Asia version also has different radio than the NZ version, the NZ has 2100 band, but the Asia one doesn't in its place it keeps most of the lower bands

2100 is used here in NZ by vodafone but 2100 is used in loads of countries mainly through europe I think.

no problem as well, that's why i don't know why so many people are complaining about the GPS and "lag"
coming from Windows Mobile, this "lag" is nothing, GPS takes average 5~15 sec to pick up depending on weather, my old phone it takes 5 min to 1 hour to pick up
and waiting for the Windows software to load was always like an eternity, that's why iphone got so famous, because windows mobiles devices have always been slow, and i'm sure it will continue to be slow even with the same CPU, cuz my old phone was a 625Mhz CPU, and still didn't cut it, i OCed it to 650Mhz and it was not much better, but definitely noticeable... anyways.... the SGS i9000 is a dream to use.
GTA as well, 3G is mostly fine in most areas, but sometimes when you are down in the subway (the stations with open tunnels) it can't pick up 3G only G or Edge, and some parking lots
it is more a concern about traveling as, drive around Ontario/Quebec quite a bit, having the 850 band is a safety & bonus.
so if the new one from Bell works, i'll sell the UK i9000 version (sill in stock firmware but rooted)

I still cant get over that price though.. seems insane....
I am on AT&T for the main reason that I travel frequently to Europe and Asia (Japan, Hong Kong) and it's the carrier who happens to have devices with 3G bands compatible nearly worldwide (Even though I don't like so much the price AT&T is costing me...)
So... really considering now to switch to the Galaxy tab and say good bye to my good old TP2 (heavily overclocked so still with a bit of life in it !)
I have a few questions
1. there are rumors here and there saying the Tab for AT&T wont have the front facing camera (And then some other places where it's listed as a spec of the AT&T tab). Anybody can confirm / infirm this ? (Would be really pissed to pay such a price for the device if it has been castrated)
2. AT&T is the last US carrier not to have announced a launch date for the tab... (Maybe it's willing to be a bit nice to Apple and its recently commercialized iPad, or maybe it's just an old and slow company...). Pure speculation: is there a chance we'll be able to switch the tab bands from T-Mobile like some have successfully done with other Samsung phones from the galaxy family ?
3. Another pure speculation: has Samsung actually disabled the hardware for voice calls on the US versions ? I hope his will be solved by flashing another firmware. Otherwise I'll just end up buying an international version (Which will be much more expensive...)

What concerns me are the comments that suggest US carriers will somehow restrict their service to GT so only data will work (no voice). So that raises the question for those of us who get the unlocked version - how do we get our Gt on to ATT or others? I guess I'm asking which ATT phone is it close enough to that I can acuire and swap the SIM card?

Well, from what I hear is the 850/1900 band version will be an unlocked north amaerican version which can work with rogers (Canada) and at&t for the US by just adding your SIM card in. It is unknow weather the at&t network will identify the galaxy tab and change your plan accordingly if that is even how it will work with at&t. I beleive they WILL have a different plan for data for this device as T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon are following this. Also, the at&t version WILL be a different model in appreance and features as this unlocked one will not. Probablly because at&t WILL remove the front camera and who knows what else (thanks to the iphone). That is why the samsung site has not put the at&t version on their site yet. really do hope it will be treated as a PDA phone thru at&t's network (for the unlocked version)

I just heard today from Negri electronic that this version of the tab will not be available until JANUARY ...so don't bother pre-ordering it.

That's funny as they told me last Friday that the warehouse in CA is expecting them on November 10th. Also, I work near the mobile city online store in NYC and stopped in there and they said this week they would have them. hmmm
UPDATE: Just sent a message to my contact @ Nergi. He said they just received the notice that this version of the tab will not be in till early 2011. You were right clubtech... Was hoping you were wrong.. lol That sucks!

Figured I would fire up this thread and bump it up as Bell is releasing the Galaxy Tab on November 12th. That will be our solution for the 850/1900 3G version I guess..? I sent a message to Nergi to see if they will have this version. I'll keep you posted.
I have my G-Tab now (Euro version with phone and data working great on AT&T in USA) Be glad to answer questions. General comment: I LOVE it! The form factor and wt are just right for me and it has all the features I miss on my iPad. Only criticism is that I find Android a bit less stable than IOS but that might be what Gingerbread or Honeycomb will address.

Are you getting good 3g coverage? I see your in PA... Close to me. I know the 1900 band does blanket this area to some degree but the 850 band is alot stronger. I think I may wait for a full 3g band with both 850/1900 bands. Seems like the bell version will be the answer to that. Glad to hear you love the device.
I read that the bell version can't make any phone calls fyi .

Yes the 3g coverage is fine in the Reading area (better than my iphone, not sure why) I made decision to go for the Eur version when it became apparent the ATT version would be limited to data (no phone) and I couldn't get an answer on whether the "North American" version (with 850 UMTS) would arrive with phone capability OK. I saw a map of ATT 1900 coverage and saw that it takes care of at least 75% of the US, including virtuall all of the East, so I'm comfortable with my decision.

Yes that's my hope. It's also probably a sign the AT&T one must be around the corner
I could not find out whether the Bell one would have call functions or not (That would be another great sign or opportunity)

Hi, I've been a S4 user and a very intrigued reader on this website. XDA has taught me many great things about my Sprint S4. I'm now ready to make the leap to the Note 4 and I'm so confused with all of the different models available.
Here's what I want the phone to do:
- I live in the US, and I would like to set up the phone on the Straight Talk or AT&T network and I obviously want to take advantage of the fastest speeds Straight Talk/AT&T offers.
- I am traveling to England in the Summer for a month and I would like the phone to work on one of their networks. (I would like to have 4G, but if 3G is the only compatible band than that's fine, as long as I'm getting some sort of data).
- I travel to Canada on a monthly basis and I would like my Note 4 to be able to run on the Rogers Network and utilize the fast speeds Rogers offers.
Basically, which Note 4 model will satisfy my needs? I just want to take advantage of the fastest bands available in these places. I've been leaning towards the N910H because my understanding is that it is compatible with all of my above requirements. Is this true? If not, which model should I be look at?

I can't say for certain about Rogers Canada, but the US T-mobile variant- SM-910T- is what I have, and you should look into it. Maybe someone with Rogers can chime in about that.
It's 100% compatible with AT&T's fastest LTE bands and most 4G GSM bands used in Europe. It has an unlocked bootloader for easy rooting/ROM-flashing. There is an awesome XDA section devoted to it with some great ROMs and other tweaks. Of course, the major benefit is that if you stroll into a T-mobile store any buy one, it will have a warranty and service options if something were to possibly be wrong with it. Now, you'll need to get the phone SIM-unlocked either through T-mobile directly or an online sim-unlocking service (~ $20-30)
If you wanna spend less in the States, the 910T sells on craigslist, swappa, ebay, etc in pretty large numbers and it's very easy to obtain one in mint condition for a lot less than retail. Obviously, make sure that the device has a good IMEI through swappa.com before buying it used.
I find that lots of people buy the Note 4 and decide to sell it after a while- either they prefer something smaller, or an iPhone, or any number of other reasons like wanting extra cash, but there's tons of em on craigslist here in Chicago.
I bought a Sprint Note 4 in perfect condition from a guy for $350 the other week. Not saying you will necessarily have that type of luck, but just something to ponder.
i use 910U on rogers and AT&T gophone. also used it in the UK, most of europe and asia. this is an exynos taiwan variant with LTE. may not give you the fastest speeds everywhere but its awesome.
In the UK we get the Snapdragon 910F, but the 910H looks good according to the bands I've seen online (I don't know if they're correct mind!)
In the UK different networks use different bands (900, 1800, 2100, etc) for 3G; with some of the bands being shared amongst companies these days. Ideally you want a device that supports 900Mhz UTMS, and the 910H supports the band. The 900Mhz band has better indoor coverage than the higher frequencies as well.
Again 4G is on different bands depending on your provider, but the networks share most of the spectrum at the moment to reduce costs. I believe 4G is on 800, 1800, and 2600Mhz

IDK about LTE, but phones for China/HK will work on our 3G networks. I've tried a few 3G iphone knockoffs and had no issues.
