So whenever Sprint pushes its 2.1 update, will those of us with rooted heroes and custom roms have to unroot in order to receive the update? Or will we have to wait for the custom roms to support 2.1?
Just wondering, because I really want and like 2.1 but I don't want to wipe my data.
More than likely the debate here will have a 2.1 build that's fully functional long before Sprint pushes one but even if they don't after it. Gets pushed out the debate here will have one that supports root. If you ruu and take the ota update it may correct the security exploit that was used to root so you would have to wait until someone found a way to root it again.
Be pacient we have great devs on here it will only be a matter of time.
Dang predictive text
basically, wait until we have a ROM here to upgrade, don't get OTA if you want to keep root access. You might not be able to get it back
Source code released yesterday, so won't be much longer.
bye the time sprint pushes an update, there will be 3 other android phones to chose from.
edit: new android phones at sprint i mean
Yeah, Sprint sucks with updates being released in a timely manner. With my bberry, I was always using other carriers to update.
So I guess the consensus is to wait for our devs to get a full 2.1 rom working rather than unrooting and upgrading ota.
When the new dev roms come out, I was also wondering if I could save all my data, or how i could save all my data if a wipe was required.
If your phone is rooted, I would recommend an app from the market called "Backup for Root Users".

Thanks. I'll try that. Do you have any experience using it with one of the dev roms that need wipes? I am considering switching from modaco 2.0 to the aosp 2.1 but my concern was getting all my data back.
Ya it works. After you restore everything, you need to hard restart the phone (SEND+MENU+END) or it will be real slow until you do hard reset it.

Maybe there's a special way to do it, or maybe you don't backup everything, but Backup for Root Users totally effed up my restore when I moved from Fresh 1.1 to Modaco 2.0.
Actually, I tried Backup for Root Users, Astro File Manager, Titanium Backup, all of them sucked. (even after a fresh wipe of course)
I finally went back to my Fresh nandroid backup because I was getting so many FC's.
Maybe it was because it copied the APK's + "System Data" that did it, but it certainly didn't work, not smoothly anyway. :/
I've never had issues with Backup for Root Users. It takes time to restore everything & it is highly recommended that you hard reset your phone it it is finished restoring.

I've moved from Fresh to MoDaCo without wiping and it has worked just fine.
I have a backup made from Fresh, and I am planning on flashing AOSP 2.1 soon. I'll try the restore tool and tell you how it works. If it doesn't...That's what nandroid backups are for.
I have a question related to this topic. I have a rooted Hero with TTG 1.6 ROM running. Seems like right now, if I wanted to switch to a different ROM like Fresh, all I ever needed to do is copy the zip file to the SD root, reboot while holding the Home button down, and select "Install from .zip" or however it's phrased. When a new 2.1 ROM comes out, would it be that simple, or would there be more steps involved since the ROM isn't based on the current 1.5?

A factory wipe would probably be required (Not the RUU though)

How many apps does it support? Or is it even that? How much is the reware mybackup software? Do you have a link for it? And will it only work on rooted phones or can the backups be transferred to unrooted ones as well?
Before upgrading to the leaked 2.2 ROM, I did a full Nandroid and Titanium backup. After playing with the new ROM, I decided to go back to my old setup: 2.1 + leaked OTA.
I restored using Nandroid, expecting everything to look exactly the same as I left it - meaning all my apps, scenes, widgets, emails, SMS, etc from my last 2.1 setup would be in tact. Instead, what I got was 7 empty home screens, Swype no longer installed (or at least checkmarked to run in settings), and a bunch of apps that wanted to be reinstalled. I thought Nandroid was supposed to fully restore your system to the exact same appearance and function as when the backup was performed? What happened?
Luckily (or so I thought), I also had a Titanium backup. I had it reinstall all my apps + system settings, but again: my homescreens were still blank and my Swype still wasn't working. Most of my apps got their data back, with the exception of Touchdown, which said it was corrupt. I finally was able to restore some, but not all of my homescreens (sans widgets) by manually going through Titanium and clicking on a system file called: [Desktop] HTC Sense 1.0.
My questions are, why didn't Nandroid fully restore everything? And, why did I have to manually click on that file in Titanium to get it to restore my homescreens, even though I'd already told it to restore all apps+system files? Makes me wonder what else I'm missing and need to manually click on.
I have to say, this is the one drawback of the Android system vs Blackberry. It seems nearly impossible to get a clean, full restore.
I likewise did a nandroid backup, reverted to stock, updated radio & applied the 2.2 leak. Tried it out and nandroid restored back to my 2.1 install. Everything was as it should be, fully restored.
Not sure what you did wrong.

I didn't do anything wrong. I simply went into Titanium, hit "Backup all apps + settings," then restarted into Clockwork recovery and used "backup" through Nandroid.
When I restored, I hit "restore" in Nandroid. Then I hit, "Restore all apps+settings" in Titanium.
I don't trust the Android system's backup applications and fail-safes, largely because they're anything but.

Did you revert back to stock 2.1 or stock 2.1 + leaked OTA? I did the latter.
I havent had any problems with Nandroid. Even went right from the crap 2.2 back to the OTA in one click. I also used titanium backup...but just for my apps. Try only backing up your apps+data...leave the system alone. Then nandroid then install just the apps. I would maybe reroot if it persists.

Not trying to be insulting, but I've seen many reports of folks doing nandroid restoring after trying out 2.2 and no one else (that I've seen) has had the issue you are having. The obvious conclusion is...
When I restored, I hit "restore" in Nandroid. Then I hit, "Restore all apps+settings" in Titanium.

Why did you do a Titanium restore? You do know what a nandroid backup/restore does, right? The Titanium restore should have been harmless, but it was also 100% unnecessary.
The first time I did a nandroid restore, I wasn't paying attenttion and just asumed the backup file listed first was the most recent, (i.e. in descending order by date/time). But later found out (by taking the time to look), that the latest backup was on the bottom of the llist.
i need some help. i cant download from the market after i went back to a 2.1 rom from a 2.2 beta rom. any ideas?
Is it stuck on downloading?
Usually when it is, I just leave it there-- then after a few minutes, it will tell you it's installing.
You can also try going to Settings > Applications > Market and clearing data and cache. Then open up market again and let it refresh.
i tried that already and it still hasnt changed. even did a factory reset twice

I SO don't know what I'm talking about. Ever. But especially here.
However having said that, perhaps you flashed the baseband to 2.2 with the modem file and Odin, and need to flash it back to a 2.1.
Anyone confirm/feel free to correct me and call me names....
Also I've had issues with the market upon restoring backups after trying out different ROMs. Sometimes I stop all the backed-up market downloads, then clear the cache, the reboot and try downloading apps again one or two at a time and that works. Recently I had an issue where the market thought I didn't have a program installed, but I did have it from a Titanium backup. Market kept trying to restore it. Then I uninstalled it from my Epic and reinstalled it from the market.

I had the same issue when I reverted back to 2.1. Are you doing a restore from a nandroid backup? I tried doing a straight nandroid restore, failed. I tried wiping and flashing a 2.1 rom and then doing a data restore, failed. Finally, I just gave up and forwent the data restore. I had to rebuild everything, but it worked.
I'm sure you can find a more elegant solution, but it's what worked for me.

Ibwas having the same problem. It was caused by restoring from a nandroid backup. I just reflashed and restored all my apps manually
Tapatalkin it from my Epic 4G
i fixed it by going back to the 2.2 beta rom i was using. i reverted back to 2.1 because gps wasnt working but now gps is working on 2.2 and i have market access. i would say close this thread but i sure somebody else will have this problem and need the help so leave it open
So I'm new to this phone and I'm unsure about its backup process and its restore process. I come from the moto cliq phone and that phone had a different custom recovery that in my opinion was better.
With this clockwork recovery unless I'm doing something wrong I get force closes left and right when I do a rom restore. So what happens is I completely restore the rom and as soon as the phone loads into it everything will give me force close warnings which in return never let's me fully load in, making the restore crap! Because I have to start fresh.
So could anyone here tell me the proper process of backing up my rom/ restoring, using this clockwork recovery? Or is this a known bug? Rom I was using was EE 1.2.9.
Thank you for any sorta help.

I can't tell right off, because EE is updated now, but is EE 1.2.9 a froyo ROM? Some apps will FC because they are NOT for froyo. If you did the backup from eclair and then flashed to a Froyo rom you may see those FCs.
You might try booting into clockwork, wiping the cache and user data and system, then doing an advanced restore and restoring just the data. But again, apps that are not supposed to run on froyo will fc.
Also, it sounds like you can re-load everything fresh with too much hassle - you've had lots of practice by now - why not try flashing a new EE ROM like 2.0.0.01. Follow the instructions and FLASH the DK17 modem. Then you can reload your apps from the market and do an updated nandroid/clockwork backup.
EE 1.2.9 is the rom before the froyo beta drop that he did. When I do backups everything goes smoothly, but when I restore and I just hit restore a rom it seems to restore fine, but the min I pass the load up screen all I get is force close for everything.
I don't know if I'm doing my back ups or restores wrong or if maybe it could be the rom? But somehow I doubt its the rom. I'm trying to figure out if there's a procress to backup or restore that I'm doing wrong?
All I hit is back up when doing my nandroid and to restore I just hit restore, I didn't do advance restore. Any tips?
Thanks for the reply.

Are you using a theme? Any time I have tried to restore a theme it has caused endless force closes.

So at some point your phone is runnign with NO fc's? And then you back up and restore to test the backup, and suddenly you have FCs? You should not get FC's from restoring a nandroid backup that you had just made from a flawless ROM.
It's possible that one of your resident programs is conflicting with the others - if you go into settings, applications, running services, do you see anything there that perhaps should not be there?

You're exactly correct. A perfect example is right now I'm running EE 1.2.9 with no force closing problems with all my apps installed and everything is running smoothly, I made a back up and then wiped my phone completely of everything.
Then went ahead and tried hitting restore, everything seemed to have restored because I got no errors in recovery but the min the phone loaded into home screen I get errors like "launcher pro force close, beautiful widgets force close." And so on.. I've clicked over 100 times force close and everything seems to give to me force close errors renderng my phone useless, after the system restore.
So I had to start fresh again and just reinstalled everything and everything is working fine. Weird huh? I don't know what I could be doing wrong.
Thanks for the help.

You need to do an advanced restore and only restore data. Basically you flashing a 2.1 rom over a 2.2 rom this will break things. Since you are going from 2.1 to 2.2 your best bet is to reinstall all your apps from scratch or use titanium backup to restore your apps. You are bringing in data from 2.1 to 2.2 that shouldn't be there that is why your getting fc's.

I'm not updating to 2.2 yet. This all is happening on 2.1 using EE 1.2.9 (eclair.) Which doesn't make sense to me at all. Unless something is wrong with clockwork recovery?

Hey, I just decided to give decks 1.3d a try, so I backed up my apps with titanium backup. After I flash decks along with tiamat LEE, gps fix, vipermod, gapps with voicemail and titanium zip, I setup my phone and run titanium. Then, after trying to restore apps, my phone does a hot restart and doesn't restore anything. I tried updating busybox already, and I come from a sense Rom.

in that case when you restore them, restore app only (so w/o data)
You DID just backup your own personal apps, not any System, or Google or HTC apps, right?
