Rooting after froyo - EVO 4G General

I'm new to this whole android scene and I updated my htc evo to froyo last night..
Before learning about root xD.
Am i correct in assuming that I can no longer root my phone for the time being?
Sorry if this has already been posted or a stupid question

No you will have to wait until one of the geniuses figures out how to root it.

thank you

2.1 Leak to 2.1 Root

Hi. I am a dev who is fairly new to the Android platform. I recently acquired a droid eris running 2.1 leak v3. I am interested in upgrading to root. I was wondering if anyone had achieved root in any of the leaks? If not, is anyone working on it? If so I may be able to help.
Thanks in advance and I apologize if any of these questions had already been answered. I have searched all over this forum and other forums and could not find a recent answer to these questions.
Also, I hear the OTA is right around the corner and might be the exact same as the third leak. Should I just wait until that comes out to attempt to achieve root? I do not want to spend hours of my time working on this only to have the OTA come out the next day and have done this for nothing.

There are versions of 2.1 rooted, but there is no current way to go from the leaks TO root. There are rooted roms based on 2.1 though.

Rooting updated EVO

okay guys, I tried to figure this out without bothering yall, but my newb knowledge is limited and I'm confused as hell. I was planning on rooting my phone today after reading about all the information I've been collecting from you guys, but now that I have updated my phone, will Toast's method using those files still allow me to root? Or do I need new files in order to root my phone? I see some files on developer page on new root but I'm confused if those are for phones already rooted or not...ahhhh
so I guess I'm asking is..if you have stock phone with new update applied, how do I go about rooting my evo?
We don't know yet. You should not have updated.
Quick and straight to the point, thanks for your reply. I guess I'm a motherfreakin idiot with the worst timing in the world for things like this. FML

quick question; if i root with Toast's method, then install the rooted updated rom that's in the dev section (by Calkulin), that should be fine, right?

So in order to fully root and nand unlock stock evo with new update, all I have to do is follow Toast's step 1&2 then apply the new rooted update on developer site? just wanna get things crystal clear so I don't risk bricking my evo..
I don't know or think it has been confirmed to work with the new update yet.
Toast step 1 will root the phone
Toast step 2 will unlock nand
Installing the new rooted update will flash the stock sprint rom without breaking your root.

There is some info going around in dev forum saying Toast's method will not work if you have the new OTA update applied on stock EVO saying you will get error messages and stuff although it will not brick your phone which is adding to more confusion..
has anyone successfully rooted their stock evo with new OTA update applied? or do I need to wait until devs come up with new files needed to root the evo?

You and me both my friend, you and me both. Sat there as the update came up and thought, I bet this is going to prevent me from rooting today ...
Yeah, ALL root is broken if you install the OTA.
Okay so I've been digging around and asking questions in dev forum, seems like there is no way for Stock EVO with OTA update to root their EVO yet. What bothers me is that I haven't seen a single post from a dev announcing that they are working on new root methods for Stock EVO with new OTA update.. they seem to be more concerned about fixing the issue around previously rooted EVOs, and I'm afraid we are getting left out... I hope this isn't the case, and hopefully one of our brilliant devs will give the new stock evo with OTA update owners some attention to this matter.

They're busy working on the kernel. Everybody was warned not to accept the OTA and those of us that chose to do it have to lie in our beds until the developers get around to it.

Seems like that is the case, someone from dev forum suggested that downgrading the OTA to previous one then rooting might wield some fruit, If I can figure out how to do that I'll be more than happy to be a guinea pig for you guys.

They busted their asses to get root the first time, and, as of right now, every EVO that you buy is capable of being rooted. Only people who update without heeding the warnings are affected, so it is kind of hard to convince a dev to throw down all of their current work to go back and try to solve this AGAIN. It should be a general rule of thumb that you NEVER install manufacturer's updates on any piece of electronics that you are interested in hacking/modifying/changing in any way. 99% of the time they provide some kind of security fixes that are not announced.

I have no doubt in my mind the devs are doing everything they can to provide us with their brilliant work, I have no one but myself to blame for updating the OTA without heeding their warnings. I'm sure once the devs iron out all the issues with previously rooted system, they will get around to us as they always have. I just wish there was any way I can contribute to putting some light onto this matter for those who made the mistake of updating their OTA..
Yeah, was kicking myself as I knew it was a mistake.
Am willing to try out some ish too, that is if an extra Guinea is needed.

[Q] A Request and Warning from Evo owner

First I am coming across product threads to request some information. As stated in my post, "I" am an Evo owner and are pretty well versed in rooting procedures flashing etc. It is my second hobby having rooted eight Evo's and de-facto maintaining them for friends and co-workers. I'm somewhat a flashaholic. However, my wife owns an Epic and recently has asked me to root her phone. Being so involved in the Evo community I really haven't had the time (or desire) to get immersed in a whole new system. So because of my procrastination, I would like to ask two simple questions and I will figure out the rest. For the Epic:
1. What is the quickest, most fool proof way to root and get permanent "S-on"?
2. What are a few of the most popular ROMs/kernals in use?
(I have a full evening to read and get this done, but reading through all the post will take a week so pointing me in the right direction would be a great help. Plus I don't want the OTA pushed to her phone and be locked out for weeks until a new exploit is found).
Now for the warning. I see many asking "what if I accept the OTA and I am rooted"? A warning from what happened with the Froyo update for the Evo. Those who accepted the OTA for the Evo were without root for nearly a month because a new exploit had to be discovered. The first root procedures were long and difficult (no one click roots here, the learning curve was pretty steep). Eventually easier exploits were found and posted but in the long run, accepting the OTA simply was not worth it. The funny thing is I had the official Sprint OTA (rooted) running five hours after it was released! So hold your horses if you are rooted but just itching to accept the OTA. You WILL lose root and it may be a while before you get it back. One of the manufacturers goals is to patch the root exploits and make it as difficult as they can to root it again. A rooted version of the OTA almost always pops up within 12 hours after release.
Thanks in advance for any replies and good luck, congratulations for the long overdue update!
There are only a few ROM choices at the moment as most chefs/devs were waiting for Froyo and source before developing for the Epic.
Samsung uses a proprietary RFS file system. If you plan on flashing one of the RFS based ROMs, use this One-click to install CWM and root-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
If you plan on going with ext4 file system, use this One-click root and CWM installer-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
Bonsai is a very nice/popular ext4 ROM.
Also, I suggest you familiarize yourself with Odin(Samsung flashing utility), as you might need it if something gets borked along the way.

One-click root as linked above is the fastest way. It's also stickied at the top of the forum. The one titled " Samsung Epic 4G Wiki - CLICK HERE AND USE THIS BEFORE POSTING".
We've been running leaked FroYo for months, and root was not an issue. Kernels compiled from the OTA source have not had root issues either.
I too am an Evo owner and was flashaholic until I found myn's Z with the SBC kernel and DT's a2sd with Davlik running on SD. With that said, I also own a Epic and have switched back and forth due to the GPS bug and no DT a2sd. I've finally settled on something that works though. I've used Superoneclick universal root since it's extremely easy, tried all of the roms until I settled on Truly Epic Rebirth 1.5 with EXT4 support since it's the only one that gave me consistent GPS (I use GPS alot being in Medical sales) and then I used the one click odexer tool to speed it up and reduce my Dalvik cache footprint. No DT a2sd but I have offered tkirton $50 to port his app over so I can use it on my epic (Just waiting on him when he has time).
I am new to android as the Epic is my first android phone. The easiest root option I have seen is the one click 2.5.5 in dev section. For roms I can't offer a suggestion but would wait until 2.2 drops. And for the warning all of the leaks were rooted with the same one click method. So unless they did something drastic rooting will not be an issue after the update. Plus I am sure the devs will have prerooted roms out within a few hours of the release.

I have an Evo and an Epic. Everyone here seemed to answer your question already but I wanted to inform you there is no "S-OFF" with the Galaxy S series. That security feature is only apart of HTC Android phones as far as I know. A simple "OneClickRoot" is sufficient for full access to the system.
Thanks for all your replies. I guess it's time to get busy!

Stuck on 2.2.1 How to root/downgrade to 2.1???

Is there any way to downgrade to 2.1 so i can root?
Obviously 2.2.1 can't be rooted at the moment.
Any way to turn the s-lock to off?
PLeeaaaaaseee helppp!
NO! Sorry but please search before starting a new thread, there's at least 3 others on the first page asking the same question! 2.2 cannot be rooted due to a new version of HBOOT. It is possible to downgrade but you can't root it it still has the new HBOOT. I know unrevoked have been working on it for some time (early Jan). I've heard they've bricked a few phones too so I wouldn't do anything silly. There is no ETA for it so just wait patiently like (most of) the rest of the people stuck on 2.2.
Rant over!

Answer regarding Desire Z and Updates

[[ MAIL ANSWER 1 on Updates in Q2 for the Desire Z ]]
Dear Espen Haugen,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Desire Z.
The 2.3 Gingerbread is scheduled to come to your device some time this week. 2.3 will be an FOTA update, so it will come straight from HTC however if it is a network branded phone, they might delay the update to check if it is alright, and then roll it out.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.

[[ MAIL ANSWER 2 on Unlocked Boot on the Desire Z. ]]
Dear Espen Haugen,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, we’re pleased to announce that we have heard everyone’s comments and constructive suggestions and have decided to go forward with this initiative. We are currently developing new bootloader unlocked software for android phones. HTC is still committed to allowing our customers to unlock the bootloaders if they wish, however we are still implementing the policy and many updates were already finalized prior to our change in policy.
We currently don’t have information regarding which phones will be unlocked unfortunately.
At the moment we dont have a schedule yet either, but stay tuned; we will let you know via our official website and official social media outlets.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but be assured that we are working on a solution for our customers and our commitment has not changed. Please stay tuned to our official channels for ongoing updates on how we will be implementing this policy. Thank you for your patience.

Anyone could write this man. If you really want us to believe this is true, then do a computer snapshot of the email/ conversation and post it. I contacted HTC support because the end of june is near.. and no update has shows at least on my device, being in norway. And always one or two steps behind everyone because of
our forever slow Telenor Mobil always slowing down the Update's progress..
And it was NOT from Tmobile... it was from the HTC support department...
I can confirm that the replies from HTC are real. Just logged in with the ticket number and email by firsty.. Hope they don't delay too much for South African unbranded Desire Zs
Really hope that they dont dissapoint us with this. And a much needed rootable phone... what a whack idea to lock us out like this.

This is a very noobish question but hopefully people will actually answer it anyways.. what exactly does an unlocked boot loader mean? Does it mean your phone is essentially always rooted ? So like I could overclock with any of those apps on the market?
Well, it means that it can be rooted using rooting tools. It will not be unlocked out-of-the-box. But capable of recieving Perm root.
The new update locked this feature, and the new bootloader made it impossible to use easy tools to root.
So would this then mean I'd skip the downgrade step? Would I be able to easily temp root? I've always wanted to try but with all the downgrading and code working I'm way too nervous
Yes, when the new bootloader is implemented on the devices it will be possible to use tools that does not require downgrade. As my Desire Z was rooted with Visionary before the .405 update, it SHOULD be possible to use Visionary ( maybe a new updated one for the new 2.3 ) to Temp and Perm root the phone once again.
There might be other tools available when the new bootloader gets on the devices. But there are not much info regarding when and how it will become available.. got no real answer except what i posted here from HTC.. rather cruel to us nerds But it's well worth the wait, i hope
Thanks much for the info! Guess I'll wait until it comes out and see what I can do with it cause I'd really like to give it a shot
Yeah, after my big update-fail loosing root, i have also waited.. even though they say that custom roms are better, i kinda like when my second HTC phone works.. so i take no "big" chances on bricking it So i'll wait too for the update, and see what happes.. i guess i'll brick it then
I know this may sound as bs and if so I'm sry but I just wanna know does this reply from htc relate to the desire Z's in the US only or worldwide?Hopefully with this out I'll be able to finally root my phone

No I don't know.I just tried to root it yesterday(for the first time actually) with visionary+ but thankfully I couldn't get it to temproot so I never got to the step to try and permroot it.What's the other method and is it anywhere near as simple as visionary?
When i rooted the first time i used Visionary too. But if you got a model with the new firmware, you cant root it because of the new bootloader.. With older models you could root, and install Ginger with no problem at all. Thats why they decided to go forward with removing the Root-locking bootloader..
And it seems like the answer i got was pretty basic, so to me it sounded like it was for Desire Z in general.. but Provider locked phones will of course be slower than unlocked phones that get the firmware directly from HTC and not the provider-haxed firmware.

Check the android dev subforum. or the wiki. there's a full guide on using visionary to only do temp root then gfree to do the perm root. From there, you can pick your choice of gingerbread roms. I'm using virtuous Unity 1.26. others have their preference, but check it out.

So basically from what I've read over there the only option for me is to downgrade to an earlier version, then temproot with visionary and permroot with gfree right?I was hoping I'd be able to install the coredroid rom but that'll be the easy part once I actually manage to root the phone.I mean if the update's gonna come in a matter of days why should I bother downgrading.Btw thanks for your replies guys
Yes, i believe it is because they havent really figured out how to root the newer version. As of waiting a few days for official gb, i have no idea since they promised to deliver during Q2 and since Q3 has just started, i dont know how long it will take for them to actually fulfill their promise.
But in the mean time, unity is a pretty good inbetweener.
You still have to root your phone if u want coredroid anyways, so no harm in doing it now and getting your pick of GB roms.
Sent from my Desire Z via XDA App
Well I wouldn't mind rooting it since I was trying to do it anyways but reading trough the threads and wiki for downgrading the dz all that adb fastboot and goldcard stuff seems way too complicated for me so I guess I'll wait for the official update and see if an easier method like the visionary one or whatever pops up
woah.. those are all different methods, you dont have to use all of them.
as I said:
Temp root via visionary
Perm root via Gfree
done.
no gold card and all that stuff.
