I live in Chicago (near Wrigley Field), however, I'm married, don't drink, and am a vegetarian, so I guess I'm out. JK .

I'm in Roscoe Village. Rooting and updating the Hero CDMA is really quite easy, but let me know if you still need a hand.

Is HTC expected to reveal any new products in Austin?

I know that some say the Supersonic will be released between the 24th and the 26th. But is there any possibility that it will be shown in Austin on Monday?
I'll tell you on Tuesday...hehehehe!
LOL ME TOO. They will announce they are lighting the fire under sprints ass about the 2.1 release.
Where and when in Austin? I work in Austin.

I'm hoping for a demo of the supersonic. With us having the wimax infrastructure in place, we are a natural location to showcase. (maybe if we say this enough times it will come true )

Gingerman is a cool bar. I'd say I would meet you there but by the time I get downtown it's going to be close to 7:00. There may be a line to get in (in typical SXSW fashion). Doors open at 7 and the first people in get some pretty cool swag from what I've read. Race you to the HTC booth!
Ooo! Didn't think about the lines! I was planning on being downtown around 5. Maybe I'll just go grab my spot then....

If anything spectacular happens I will post while I'm there.
BTW, the giveaways that GDGT are giving for the first ones through the doors consist of t-shirts and i-phone cases. I may show up later than previously planned.
Come on now! With a little bit of exactosurgery and some ducktape, that Iphone case would fit your Hero like a glove! All you need is a little initiative. Well that, and the exactoknife and ducktape.....

Lol! I just think it's funny that every event I go to in Austin (FunFunFunFest comes to mind) has someone handing out crappy iphone cases. Maybe I should stock up and sell them on ebay to unsuspecting Jobs-heads.
If i make it

Meh on the iWhat cases.... really I didnt even see APPLE on the list or AT&T.

My sentiments exactly.
Quoted from the Facebook message I received:
"Just a reminder that our event is tonight, look forward to seeing everyone! The event is all-ages and open to everyone, so please feel free to bring your friends.
We're also giving away a couple of hundred gdgt iPhone cases and t-shirts, but you'll have to get there early to get one!"
T-shirt could be OK if it's black.
Nah. They're prolly iShirts. Which means pink. Or didn't you know that pink is the new black?
someone ask htc if their gonna fix the dust under the screen defect on the hero's!

Comparing the screen to the iPhone, is it glass or plastic?
I'm switching from iPhone to Evo but I have not had the chance to hold one and compare build quality.
My question is how much lag is there? Not just the home screen but the apps. FOr instance, when you open messages, how long does it take to display things? That's the number one thing I hate about Sense. Too much f-ing lag.
joecrack305, if you're in miami let me know which store so that i can come check it out.

sorry havent responded
i have both hero and iphone and they feel plastic, the evo def feels like glass.
lag wise not existent at all i swear its so smooth
jvs60 - no ones technically suppose to know about us having the evo, but every corp store in america has one person with a evo. my supervisor is the one with the evo and i know my manager def wouldnt be a happy camper if i told you to swing by, but go to any store in miami and ask to see the evo advocates phone test your luck.
tried seeing one at my local corporate sprint store. met the advocate who had it, said he was sworn to not show it off or he would get in trouble.
it is so awesome. I feel like the guy from the burger king commercial who has the small hands and hates going to burger king when I am holding it. It is pretty big, and comes with an 8gb card in it. No lag at all when putting live wallpapers on there (unlike my rooted hero). Damn I love this phone!
giddyup!
I feel like such a school girl! This thing won't be out for another 3 weeks, and I'm scouring the internet for everything EVO!
From what I've seen online, the lag is minimal...remember it has a Snapdragon 1Ghz Processor in it...Go play with a HD2 and you'll get a feel for the speed...Android 2.2 is supposed to be faster than 2.1 from what i heard also.

Can you play with the keyboard? Is it easy to type and stuff? I am coming from using a slide out keyboard so I am kinda worried about having to start using a onscreen keyboard.
thanks
The hero was my first onscreen keyboard and the iPhone was my second
The hero I'd give a 7
the iPhone 10
evo so far a 10
The screen is so big and easy to type on it's amazing for the hero I use swype now and I will probably use that in the evo when I switch

Sprint announcement tonight ..

I just hope the people who are overly complaining stay that way. One thing that blows my mind is when someone complains before they even see the product. Now don't get me wrong I know everyone want a evo 2, but nothing wrong with sprint trying something new out. And to those threatening to leave your contract because of this, lol like people haven't said this before and got raped with no lube by the next carrier you went to - give me a break.
[update] This phone is horrid, i tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, and i guess you can't do that with sprint (my first time signing up with them in sept ember), oh well wait for MWC.

that would be a first but they can't even get Qik to work right. They need to enhance the service before bringing some phone with a hinge into the mix. EVO's screen is big enough WTF am I gonna really do with 2 and 3D don't ever go there. I need a 3D phone like I need a hole in my head. I can put my foot on a hinge while Sprint wears some 3D glasses and kickem in the face. This is upsetting.

What you need is some basic punctuation and grammar lessons. QIK works just fine for me. every time i've fired it up, it works exactly as described. as for the rest of it, is there any point to getting bent outta shape by an announcement that hasn't happened?

No one, not even you knows the full truth of what's coming out. So don't go beating on rumors and talk cause that just puts you in the middle of crowd. **Hurricane Irene*. Off-topic

I know this isn't Aria related but I was curious if anyone here in our little Aria community is in it's path? I live less than a half mile from the ocean at the Jersey Shore and it looks like we'll be getting a major hit from this thing. Time to break out the hurricane tote and make sure we are good to go.
Have to admit, this is the first storm in a long time that actually had me pretty nervous. Anyway, if you are going to feel this storm, please take the proper precautions and stay safe. It looks to be a real nasty one.

Nah, too many people to evacuate for something that's probably not going to cause a whole lot of real damage besides some flooding. Plus the state can't afford to let AC get shut down for a weekend.

I wish you were right and so do millions of others. Unfortunately, she isn't backing down. We just got the mandatory evacauation orders so it looks like we'll be leaving tomorrow once the windows are boarded up and the propert is secured.

A Homeless Guy in the Park says I should keep Froyo

He said Froyo is a great version.
I just bought a used Incredible, and I know that many people now have Gingerbread.
Do I have to do anything special to keep Froyo? Are there any kind of automatic or OTA upgrades I need to block?
This is my first droid.
I think the gingerbread update got pulled. So you are probably safe there

You really should not talk to homeless guys in the park, even if their named Einstein.
Moving to gingerbread was best thing I have done since i moved out of the park and got a house not built out of cardboard.
There are a few reasons I miss froyo, but on the whole gingerbread is superior.
For one, tasker never really worked the same after gingerbread. Google changed how apps could interact with the system rendering some of my secret agent-y profiles useless. I also had a phone finder profile that will no longer work as well.
Then there's the navigation-music volume issue. I've not had this issue since I switched to using Google music, but almost all third party music apps would not play nice with navigation volume.
Aside from those two issues, gingerbread is better.

If a ota update message pops up just cancel or decline it and you can keep froyo forever. If your phone is rooted you can dissable the update check by editing the build.prop file in /system.

in a lot of ways froyo is better, but as a whole development has moved on to gingerbread. So you will typically end up with better ROM's and overall performance from upgrading.
Not to mention that froyo has a couple security leaks that were patched in gingerbread. Nothing major or to be concerned about, but it is out there.
I love it that a homeless guy gave you smartphone advice I'm running a Gingerbread rom with some sense 2.1 mixed in and it runs amazingly well.
Don't take advice from a homeless man unless you need to know which bridge is the safest to sleep under.
GB > Froyo.
You would think the patched security flaws would be enough to upgrade, not to mention the performance upgrade. I guess for some people that's not enough, hell my one buddy is still running an old ass version of Froyo on his Droid 2. As soon as the devs got Gingerbread on this phone I switched and never looked back.

Jeez - the close-mindedness of people these days!
I get my smartphone advice from the local homeless population, car advice from the 7-11 cashier, my medical advice from the guy who sells bottled water by the interstate on-ramp, and relationship advice from the guy in the park who yells at dogs.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to boot up Eclair, pour some windshield-wiper fluid into my transmission, swallow half a bottle of Airborne for my aching knee, and fling poo at this girl I like.

Of course, it should never be confused with US Army Airborne School, of which you are a graduate, correct? I don't know a whole lot about that. I'll have to go ask the woman who scrubs toilets in my office.

Yes, I've been accused of that. What got me was the fact that most paratroopers, those who jump a lot, get bad knees and ankles from all the constant impact. And she probably does know a lot about the school. The military in general, with the exception of the Air Force that I noticed (I think it's the fact that there are few toilets on planes), is a firm believer in toilet scrubbing complete with the pine oil smell. We did have to get up at 0300 to clean restrooms that we rarely used. Fun times.
