Hardware help needed... - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

Hi everyone.
Seems this forum has at least a couple of people taking their Prophete apart (as I do) and collecting some hardware know-how.
I have two Prophetes (XDA Neos to be correct) with different problems.
I start with the history (how it comes) and will end with what I know know and where I do not get any further currently:
Prophete #1:
5 years old from O2 germany contract, G4 device (Rom versions to be posted on request, device is at home...). Was broken twice (no booting any more) during warranty and the got wet when I was hiking only with a shirt in a thunderstorm. No warranty of course, but device dead ;-( And nobody would repair it - not even for money. Pissed off from O2, but whatever...
So I found here somewhere the Maintenance Manual and disassembled the thing, dried everything and had to buy a new battery and since then it more or less works fine. The battery I was able to re-animate by charging with Laboratory power supply - The Prophete seems to go dead below a certain voltage and does not even try to charge the batt any more...
For a while I had strange illumination effects - screen fixed very bright with one half even brighter and bad color contrast - possible to work, but ugly. This disappeared slowly after 2 more years...
Then I had this well-known dead speaker-thing (dirt in headset socket) - also long time ago repaired.
But now (over the last 2 years, increasing lately a lot) I have this strange scratching noise on the main speaker. It was supposed to be a bad speaker why I bought on ebay a defective second Prophete (to be discussed below) and switched speakers - booth are fine in #2 but scratching in #1. The trick with some cardboard under the speaker cover also does not work reliably and not at all in last months.
What I found last time I took the device apart is: when I leave a finger nail thick gap between the front cover and the housing frame in the lower half of the device, then everything is fine. But that is unsatisfactory to work with a semi-disassambled phone!
I guess, it has to do with some hair-break in a connection on the mainboard or something with the contacts between the different boards (spring contacts for grounding?) or with the headphone socket.
DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THAT SCRATCHING NOISE and can help? Where should I search?
Device #2:
Bought 1 year ago as broken. Has a crack in the touch screen, but the screen responds fine and precise all the way down to < 1mm from the crack. After cleaning the screen and the front cover, the device started to work again (touch was inop. when I got the thing).
WLAN is dead. BT seems to work.
GSM did work fine. So the device got my wifes new mobile phone. And after 3 months it started to refuse contact to any GSM network.
If I search for networks, it lists all the providers around in germany, but when I have it connect to one, it times out. So I think the Radio (GSM) system is still working (at least receiving network names, tuning right frequencies etc.), but not correctly.
I did reflash the radio ROM, but no success so far.
Sometimes after cold boot, the telephone app in general and the settings specifically are very irresponsive (long answer time, complete WM crash, whjatever). Thus I consider reflashing the entire device.
Q:
- what are good radio and WM(best: 6.1 GER) ROMs to try? (No flashing experience so far)
- what are typical GSM and WLAN failure mechanisms of the Prophetes (bad solder points, bad spring contacts etc.) - i.e. where to look?
I could even consider a "make 1 good out of 2 broke" - action - but I am afraid, that booth devices have a somehow mainboard-located problem.
Thanks for any helpful comments!
Torsten

thats easy men...just take out the LCD from prophet 1, and also Put to Prophet 2.
search in youtube for prophet disassembling...take care
ps: check The LCD Code (some prophet make different LCD)

Vario II Touch Screen goes off :(

Hello
I bought mine Vario II (with CoPilot) just 8 days ago, so I've enjoyed it quite a lot for the past days
yet .. ~30 hours ago I found out that the touch screen was not responding at all .. well restart did not help, getting the battery out and putting it back again didn't help too ... I tried to do EVERYTHING with the thing ... starting with restoring factory settings (all the data! ) , ending with browsing the forums for common failures ...
Finally I ended up with the very start page where the Vario II asks for tapping the screen (irony huh ?) to start setting it up ..
Since I was not able to make it work again (the whole thing seemed to be working fine ... just the touch screen ... ) so I brought it to the local T-Mobile shop today in the morning.. guess what, the guy at the shop just removed the battery and put it back again (I've done that XXX times during the night) AND IT STARTED WORKING again ... I couldn't understand anything there, felt really lame
anyway after I've left the shop and used it for quite a bit it started again .. now I've kind of figured it out .. when I'm using the device actively (the temp raises) and it starts at the top right corner of the screen .. the touch screen just flickers there and then after a minute or so it doesn't respond at all any more .. if I just put it away and don't use it - the screen responds again after some time ...
NOW finally the question is: has anyone had any problems with Vario II like I do? I ought to think that it is a somewhat faulty device that I've got (it hasn't been physically damaged)
PS the touch-screen gets stagnant faster with bigger programs (CoPilot, Skype, etc...) and it takes some time to get stuck with just using the phone...
btw I've put a temperature thingy in the device - it shows that the battery temp is at 42 C . Isn't that a bit too much ?
yeah and how do I figure out what version it is ? I mean the S/N that is mentioned here ( http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Problems )
?

Yes, one of my Hermes' had the exact same problem - touch screen malfunction starting at the upper right corner when temperature rose. The usual tricks to solve the screen alignment problem (loosening the screws, removing the gasket with a stripe of a business card) didn't help at all. I returned the device and got a new one.

It's printed on the box (at least of an O2 Trion) and on the sticker underneath the battery. Just look for the S/N starting with HTC6xx... but "our" defect is not the normal SA problem, it seems to be much rarer and not described in the Wiki.
Cheers
Daniel
Thank you so much for the answer Daniel, I'll get them to change it tomorrow.
I have exactly the same problem with my TyTN. In the morning, after the phone has been off all night, the touchscreen works for maybe 30mins, then the phone warms up and the screen ceases functioning. Bizarre though - I got the phone about two weeks ago - the screen worked fine (i.e. under all temp. conditions) for about 7 days, then it decided to crap out. Tried all the usual SA type solutions - as you guys noted above they didn't work. Gonna have to go back to the shop and get it replaced :-(
Oh, nearly forgot, s/n is HT632
One other thing I noticed (not sure if this is normal behavior or if it started after the touchscreen borked) - When the phone is active (i.e. not locked or in standby,) the top status leds (wifi, bluetooth, gsm) don't flash. Once the device is put in standby (i.e. tapping the power button) they start flashing again. Like I said, not sure if this is normal or if its related to the touchscreen going.

This is definitely not normal. But it's an interesting observation. If the TyTN were a car, I'd say there's a bad ground connection somewhere.
Try a hard reset, and if that doesn't solve the problem, have it exchanged. (I very much doubt that a hard reset will help, but at least here customer service refuses to exchange a device before you tried a hard reset. )
Cheers
Daniel
Hard reset borked even more. Could't get past the touch screen calibration. Phone is now in the freezer to cool down - hopefully the touch screen will work long enough so I can get past the calibration
*EDIT* Just got it out the freezer (nice and cold now.) Hard reset, got through the calibration, everything ok for about 10 mins. LED's flashing with backlight on and touchscreen working. Then - touchscreen non-responsive at exactly the same time the status LED's cut out. I'm hypothesising that there's some kind of electrical short between the circuitry for the touchpad and the status LED's - it shorts as the devices temperature rises and (i guess) some of the materials expand and come into contact with each other. Since I don't want to void my warranty in case I have to take the phone back to the store, I haven't opened it up to confirm this. Has anyone had a detailed look at the connections at the top of the screen and around the status LED's to see if my explanation is at least possible? (then I might open it up and see if I can insulate the connections.)

I have the exact same problem!!
Two additional points :
1) my device screen will not switch off automaticaly and will stay on for ever unless I switch it off
2) When the issue manifests itself for the first time the device would automaticaly go back to the today screen like if the OK button would have been pressed many time or ... was stuck!!
That's my second Tytn device the first one had the SA defect.
I was so happy when I got my new one because the S/N showed HTC637XXX but sounds like a new issue even though I'm pretty convince that that the SA issue is not far from being related to this one.
My device SPV3100 HERM100
Hello lads,
Absolutely everything you've posted seems to be happening to my device.
Now the touch screen fails to respond even if it's cold (been lying on the bed for 5 hours doing nothing at all .. ). damn... seems like I'll have to ask the local shop to get me a free portable refrigerator for the thing to work properly

Might get a chance to have an internal look tomorrow. From memory, and can't remember if the Wiki or Japanese dismantling site shows this, but I recall only a single mylar ribbon cable coming from screen area through to main board. There are if memory serves push in multi connectors from the bottom hard keypad and from front camera board (inc LEDs) to the muti ribbon cable on the back of the screen. Thus, simply put the screen, camera, hard phone keys all connect at the back of the screen to a single multi ribbon cable that goes to main board. Possibility then of a short with digitizer is at least possible. Of course digitizers are suceptible to current leakage and field interference so would not have to be an actual physical contact but could just be a close proximity issue.

Facing the same problems...
... I've been thinking about repalcing the display and the touchscreen. But now, considering that it is a HW issue, I can only replace these two things. If the bug is in the module above the screen (statur leds and camera) or related to the wireing at the back of the screen, it won't get rid of the problem. On the other hand, if it is a problem with the screen getting too hot, then I'm on the right track...
Has anyone tried this yet?
I'll try to call HTC on monday, maybe they know where the bug is.
HTC is not able or not willing to share what they know about the problem...
Hello, they excuse my English, I am possessor of a TYNT and I am with he himself problem that you, the problem is a failure of weld in the processador, when it reaches certain temperature fails and cooling it or pressing strongly on the processor it lets fail.
Greetings.

There may well be truth in what you say, I too believe it is something similar in some cases.
Do you have any proof of your suggestion. Can you provide pics or a diagram of the solder point you mean??

Hmm? The processor...?
...sorry, don't think so.
It's just that this bug occurs after using a device for months, isn't it?
Now, the first two weeks I installed all kind of programs using the wireless LAN almost permanently. My Hermes was never as "hot" as during its first two weeks. And what about the sliding-out of the keyboard? Doesn’t it always start there? This just doesn't sound right, does it?
Just received an email from someone who drew my attention to the ribbon cable connecting the upper and the lower part. What if there is a short one due to the plastic scratching the cable and then... who knows?
However, I do not disagree as far as the temp is concerned. Therefore, I'll put my Hermes on ice and see how long it does things right...
And still, there is no chance that it is related to the processor. If the processors ALU is getting too hot the entire device would be effected, wouldn’t it?
Anyways, I'm determined to find out what it is!
++ I just found a very peculiar post in the WIZARD forum. It was about some top-side buttons that kept pressing
++ without even touching… Opening the assigned programs over and over again. Odd, isn’t it?
++ That’s a HTC device AND has a sliding keyboard with a ribbon cable as a connector…
++ Yet, it operates with a different processor on a different main board.
++
++ Still blaming the processor?

And you are right too! if it appears that I am tending to agree with both above posts when on the face of it they disagree with each other it's because:
1
There are different manifestations of this problem - the causes may not always be the same
2
I agree it's NOT the processor and firmly believe it's hardware related. Of course it could be be a break (sometimes intermittent) in contact somewhere between screen and board or even a broken contact on the board (IN SOME CASES)
3
In other cases it's just pressure being put on the touch sensitive screen often at the very inconvenient top right corner that closes/minimises applications or opens start menu.
There has not been a reliable way to fix this issue other than device replacement. Replacing the screen has been notable for it's failure to resolve the issue.

So do you think the bug is to be found on the main board at all?
I'm planning to replace some parts from the screen half. In fact there are just 3 possible error sources:
1) The lcd in combination with the digitalizer;
2) The ribbon cable connecting screen parts and keypad at bottom; and
3) The keypad at the bottom itself
The ribbon cable includs the electronics for the status leds as well as the EARphone. ;-)
Soon I will be on all three of the above parts and if the error ain't there... I'm going to be MAD.
Will keep you IN THE LOOP!
Hello again, my conclusion is based on which I have disassembled my TYNT completely and I have connected it without the keyboard, of this form I have hoped to that it began to fail, later I have been moving and touching in any case the flat cable that unites the motherboard with the screen, the small circuit that takes built-in without obtaining results, single I have even obtained that it returns to work blowing air on the strongly pressed processor or on. Another observation is that if just ignited the machine and working correctly we applied single heat on the processor, begins to fail the touch screen. To my also is to me strange east failure since the temperature of the processor is not excessive when it fails, in fact desire firmly to be mistaken because there am lost the guarantee. Seguire investigating is matendre informed to you.
Greetings.

May be a fault there, but if it's just a squeeze due to heat ? pressure it may not resolve the issue.

Again I have tested, with the disassembled machine totally, start up it, I hope to that the touch screen does not respond and I put my tynt in the refrigerator, after two minutes and without moving I touch it the screen and magic, works correctly hata that again coje the room temperature.
Greetings.

This is very interesting. When I said above it is not the processor, I meant it is not a software issue related to the processor. It can of course be a heat related problem with the processor. To summarise what you have found:
1
You have a device that when first started works OK
2
If you apply heat (but not much) to the processor it fails
3
If you apply pressure to the processor it works again
4
It begins working again when you blow on the processor or put it in the fridge.
5
If you move/press or ensure the ribbon cable has a firm contact - this has no effect.
Please post if any of the above is NOT correct ALSO please post which chip you are heating/pressing.
Cheers
Mike
Hello again, everything is correct except point 3 really when this failing and you press on the then microprocessor the touch screen works correctly. Associate images.
Greetings.
EDIT by Mike. Point 3 has been edited in Mike's post to show the correct situation.

Touchscreen dead (most of the time)

Hej,
the touchscreen of my O2 XDA Neo is dead... most of the time. After a long time (i.e. can't be told exactly) not using it, it works for a few strokes, so I can get the phone to run. Rapidly it changes then, first the right half of the screen ceases to work (nearly exactly the right half, fiddling with notes or align screen shows that), soon the whole screen doesn't react. Some time later it may work again.
Some of the software can be used by using only the navigation buttons, lot of the software (including dialing arbitrary numbers) can't.
Is there any way out? As the warranty is void, I don't hesitate to open the device, if it may help. But I guess it is not as simple as increasing or decreasing the pressure on the screens edges...
Or is there any input software that uses the navigation keys? The standard soft keyboard can't be used this way, the other additional keyboards I found surfing the net don't have this possibility too. (Is there a board here to ask for software for a specific OS? Or where is a good playce to do this?)
Thanks
Inmare
In short, sometimes it's working and sometimes it's not?
Maybe there is a loose connection somewhere? Although I'm afraid it won't be that easy, but who knows. Guess a touchscreen is quite a delicate piece of electronics.
I'm afraid I don't know any software for typing and stuff and using the keyboard with your keys etc.
It does for for some (short) time, then ceases to work - sometimes at once, sometimes slowly (first the right half, after some time the left).
I don't expect to be able to repair a defective touchscreen; I hope it's just a loose connector or such... this device uses star shaped screws smaller than grade 9, I have to get appropriate tools tomorrow (i.e. today as it is past 12pm... so yesterday is today too... so I already bought the tools yesterday? I need a digital diary again to keep track of this ). Lets see if I can get the device to be reliable again.
The digitizers are sold on eBay (example) for not much. Not sure how to install them tho.
Interesting. At least I now know the size of the screwdriver. And I see the connector... I think it is worth the try.
Here you can see the inside of the device. Looks like the digitizer and the display are packed together within a metal case, but maybe it is just the connector. Otherwise I will have to open this too.
I think I will do this in the far future. Next year
Thank you.
Hi Inmare,
is there any improvement
because I have the same problem with my jamin
what should I do?

Screen fading to white ongoing issue- MONEY AHEAD!

Hi all,
I need help, suggestions, anything with an issue I've had for a while. Since the time I started loading WM6 the screen has been randomly fading to white. I have LSVW latest rom 22/4 SE and 1.40.10 radio and 1.40oli although it doesn't matter what rom you load. I tried going back to WM5 and its better but now still fades to white as well.
on advise from oli and legolas I purchased a new battery but still have the same issue.
I have dropped my phone once which resulted in a crack to the right of the DEL/CR keys so could it be a HW issue and if you think so is it one I could open up the phone and fix?
Any and all help appreciated
IN FACT IF SOMEONE CAN RESOLVE THE ISSUE I WILL DONATE SOME CASH TO THEM!
test
Im updating to
LVSW 4-23 Full, Radio 1.40.30.00, SPL 2.10.Oli, IPL 1.04
seeing if any difference comes out.
This is not the first time this issue has been reported:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-301003.html
The conclusion is that it's hardware related. It may be as simple as one of the internal ribbon connectors having a less than firm connection. It may be brought on my anything from physical movement or pressure to internal pressure if the device gats warm. However, it is possible that there is a failing component. IMHO, a case of take it for replacement/repair or first check connectors if your brave and not worried about a warranty.

HHmmm interesting thread .. the only issue i have out of that is the fade to white one.
Maybe Hardware .. i got the phone off ebay and now it has a crack in it .. so i dare say it isnt under warranty any more. (even though its a max of 6 months old).
It may also be software. I experienced the WSOD on my JASJAM when playing with the GPS-related DLL's. Once this problem appeared when switching on the camera. The screen would turn white and soft reset would not fix this, only power off/on would sort it out. Seems that the drivers do not reset (some of) the hardware to a known state on boot.
Had EXACTLY the same problem. Hoped it would be a software problem. Hard-reset a few times to no avail. Upgraded to a couple of the WM6 ROMs. No change. I did notice that when it was cool it tended not to happen, but after being on the phone a couple minutes or using the PDA for a while, it would do it AGAIN.
One weird thing I noticed was that if I did a Soft-reset and held down the Left Soft-key, I could "force" it to fade to white on start-up! VERY WEIRD.
I finally bit the bullet, and sent it back to Telstra to get it sorted. Didn't want to void warranty myself.
It has been just over 2 weeks since I sent it off, and They have sent this reply...

Hello, I am emailing about an I-Mate JASJAM phone I sent for repairs early last week (tel # xxx ).
Can you please update me as to status of this repair, as the Telstra shop did not provide me with a second phone while I await return/repair/replacement of the phone.
Thanks,

So, I guess it IS a hardware problem. But then again, that kind of reply, sounds a bit "dodgy" as it doesn't seem to "technical" does it?
Hope this helps.

Their reply was not very technical - does not surprise me however. The people who repair these devices are usually faced with some component/connection/screen or a m/board that needs replaced. They often fail to take account of something as basic as the case pressing on the screen or other components - particularly when device is warm. So they replace the component they think is faulty and then discover the problem is still there. With this issue in particular I think that there are no faulty components just the case is a fraction of a millimetre too tight for the internal components and hence swapping out parts can have no effect. With this fault I advise people to go for a replacement not a repair if possible.
NB: This issue should not be confused with white screen that may appear after installing particular software or when an application crashes, or when the flashing of a new ROM goes wrong! The hardware issue arises most commonly when the device gets warm or put another way goes white after maybe 10 minutes of use and will continue to go white even after hard reset.
Mike
I have this same problem! =(
My phone screen recently (4-5 days ago) started to go white. I never saw this happen with my own eyes but when i picked up my phone and its sleeping i push the power button to get to an all white screen. I can hear noises when i touch the screen but no image other than white. I can solve this by removing the battery and putting it back in, then my scren works fine....its not verry often just like 1-3 times a day.
I want to try a hard reset but have a question first: My phone is unlocked by the ebay guy i got it from, will a hard reset lock my phone back to Cingular?
Next i want to try upgrading my ROM and Radio and anything else...im looking in the wiki for instructions on how to do this. Any help? What else shouls i upgrade?
Ive only had my Hermes for around 2 months so im new to much of this.
THanks!
I recently purchased a Used Imate Jasjam (Ex Telstra Australia) with this issue.
I pulled the unit apart, and reseated and pressed the Power and LCD Display Data Cables... attempting to ensure they were firmly fastened.
I then upgraded to LVSW's Latest WM6 Release.
I have had the Phone go to White once in that timeframe since. I brought it back by pressing the power button of, then one again.
I don't feel that it's really a "100%" Faulty Part... Because it works fine othertimes. It almost seems as if connections or a Data Cable has an Issue.
I'm intending tonight and using the Phone over the weekend to see if the issue continues to occur.
BAD NEWS!!
Well, got my phone back after a bit over 3 weeks I think? I kept ringing the repair center and emailing. Finally they said it was ready, and was sent back to the shop I bought it from. Rang the shop "no it's not here yet, we will ring you"... now the repair centre to the shop is a 20 min drive... on the 3rd, I rang again at 1pm and "no it's not here yet, we will ring you when it arrives." At this point I was really getting p*ed off. So I went to the shop, and demanded, and guess what was AT the Shop?!?!?!
Anyway, after 1 friggin day, I have lost the Red & Green phone buttons! As of tonight the whole bottom section no longer work, and the screen has gone white again.
The repair report listed 3 things replaced...one was a "bezel" another was a "poly" something. I will get the report a list the replaced bits if anyone likes, but their descriptions are kind of strange if ya ask me.
Anyway, I have to send the phone back for repairs again, which could take another 3 weeks +, which I think is completely PATHETIC OF TELSTRA, especially for the fact they dont give the same phone or even similar to "loan" while I wait for my defective $1300 phone to get "repaired"... (more like 'fiddled with' & "yeah, she'll be right mate"...
GRRRRR!!!!
My girlfriends phone was having the same problem. Try popping out your SD card and putting the phone into/out of sleep and see if that brings back a visible screen. Thats how we determined her situation was a hardware problem and not a problem with the rom.

Yes, sadly this is kind of predictable as I said in an earlier post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1233420&postcount=7
This is why, as I said, get a replacement not a repair if possible. My view is that the individual components are fine but connectors come loose or the heat generated causes pressure to be put on the screen etc So it's a problem with some cases and how the innards in some cases get squeezed. So off course changing the top poly board, connectors, bezel gasket, may by pot luck make a difference but is just as likely to make no difference at all.

Status Report:
After having my phone playing Video's Through the Night (My Way of a "Stress Test" to Generate Heat) I woke up the find the screen to be "almost completely" White.
Usually its gone completely, however in this instance I was able to see the icons through the whitewash.
I put the phone into sleep and back out and the Display is fine again.
Being that these phones are much easier to pull apart and put back together than my old JasJar I might to do some further experimentation.
I think the issue will have something to do with either one of the following
- Heat
- Pressure on the LCD from Parts Around it
- Faulty Ribbon or Power Leads to the LCD
My suggestions
- In the Case of Heat... I'll run the Same Test, with the Phone Directly in front of a small airconditioning unit I have.
- In the Case of Pressure, I'm going to look and see if I can place some extra Insulation Tape or Similar on the Phone to relieve this
- I wish I could find somewhere to buy the Replacement Ribbon Cables but I don't know where I can get them in Australia... any ideas?

We wait to see. Mind you one guy on these boards found he could get half an hour from his device if he put it in the freezer for a while - so I'm not sure that air-con will be strong enough!!!
Mike
Well Results.....
After pulling apart the unit and reconnected, I think I found my cause to simply be excess pressure.
I've removed the "Black Plastic" Micro SD Card from its Blanking Plate.
Since I've done this... not one White Screen Whatsoever.
I don't use an SD Card, so the issue is resolved for me, however it is very interesting.
Could be Pressure or Heat (Small Hole Might Increase Airflow/Allow for Greater Dissapation or something)
Hi folks,
i've also small experience with this "white screen" issue and just wanted to inform you about it.
I got the device from my former boss who did already complain about this "white screen" issue on his O² XDA trion with original ROM. (honestly i did not really believe him due to my experience with couple of other devices so after i got the device i was just wondering - ok back to the facts).
I installed on Friday the Windows Mobile VI Pro - BLACK 2.5 Release and until today it was running (as far as i remember expect one time) nearly perfect w/o white screens. About 45min ago, i flashed the device with BLACK 3.0 Release and got until now about 5-10 times a white screen.
I assume this is not a hardware ONLY issue but indeed very strange.
I'll go back to 2.5 and will look forward if i get again the white screen or it'll be ok.
Cheers so far

You are right to ask the question "is it hardware or software".
1
We know a white screens can arise if folk duff up flashing a new ROM.
2
We know there is a hardware caused white screen that comes and goes often when device gets warm.
3
But there maybe white screens caused by some kinds of crashing software or a buggy ROM etc
Crucially in terms of finding a cure will be distiguishing between these.
2 for most people is easy - take it back and get a replacement.
1 is a matter for the ROM upgrading and fixing boards
3 is a case of trying different ROMs testing 3 party software by selective installation until the problem starts or stops.
In your case I am worried that this is a number 2 device as it did sometimes get the problem before you flashed the ROM and now it's worse. It may only be worse because this particular ROM is generating more heat and consequently more white screens. (see explanations elsewhere).
I suppose if it's an occasional problem you might live with it but otherwise it's replacement at best and repair as a rather dodgy alternative.
Mike
Hey Mike,
well, before flashing the device with a custom ROM, in my opinion it was really difficult to use it.
By flashing it with V 2.5, it was very good usable and with V 3.0 it returned to become more unusable. Nevertheless, i upgraded 10min ago with HARD-SPL-V7 and it's running fine now (i've been wating with downgrading to V 2.5. If it returns to become unstable, i will downgrade to V 2.5 again.
I'll keep you informed.
yes for this particular "white screen" issue it will be useful to hear how things go - thanks
Mike
White screen - in my case definitely a hardware issue
Hi folks,
i was testing and playing around with my Hermes and today i found the problem (very funny because now i can't reproduce it anymore but just read ahead).
Today i was playing around and after pressing by accident on the case of the Hermes, the screen appeared disappeared and changed into white.
Please download the video i recorded from the attached link - you'll see that it was able to reproduce it by tapping on the case:
http://asuka.descipe.de/dphome/test/HTC_Hermes_White_Screen_issue.mp4
Please use VLC or MPC (additional codecs required) to watch the movie.
Honestly i'm not sure if this can be reproduced by anyone but this makes the whole situation much more clear.
Any feedback is welcome.
Cheers

Repaired HD2, now no signal, can't find any networks

Hiya, I've got a HD2 with a couple of problems.
My brother had it as contract upgrade from his iPhone 3G back in February, and it was fantastic for around a month. As he never needed the insurance on his iPhone, he didn't take it out on his HD2, and you know whats coming don't you? It fell from his pocket and cracked the screen pretty badly.
As he didn't want the hassle or expense of fixing it, he went back to the iPhone and left the HD2 in a drawer. I found it a couple of weeks ago and asked what he was doing with it, he said I could have it if I got it fixed. The digitiser was the only thing wrong with it, so I took it to a local phone repair shop. After a week away having the glass replaced, I picked it up today and have found a couple of problems.
1. The phone can't find any networks.
I know its locked to O2, but with my O2 SIM card in it, it won't find any networks (the signal strength icon is the phone mast with an exclamation mark). Manually or automatically searching doesn't make a difference.
2. The Volume buttons don't work
They don't seem to make any difference to sound levels when pressed, and they seem harder to press than they used to be.
Now, I think the second problem would be fixed with a simple take-apart-put-together job, but I'm more worried about the first problem. Why would the phone lose the ability to find a network? When the digitiser is replaced, does the antenna get removed? Could it be that it hasn't been reattached properly?
I'd take it back and get it fixed properly.
Found no networks: I don't know the Hardware of HTD2 explicitely in its assemling process so I can just guess:
For my Touch diamond I got the problem that the antennacable (a tiny internal coaxial cable) was unplugged. That may be the problem here, too if GSM-Antenna is softwired in HD2.
Or try a hardreset (probably reflashing)
to get to the screen you have to strip every last part of the hd2. hunt down the official assemble disassemble video.
your problems have all the hallmarks of assembly errors. an antenna cable gets tugged when you close the case, volume buttons get caught, etc etc
id take it back and have them look at it again.

I agree with that. And most likely they will do that for free as it was their fault (if its an assembly error)

Black screen of dead ---SOLVED!!! - in test period

First the problem.
Like many others HTC HD owners and I encountered this problem 2 days ago (i have nolonger waranty). i just was connected to my computer thru USB for couple hours, when i tried to power it on, the phone display dont comed on, but the phone worked fine (i maked couple conversations. After that i started to read about this problem, a lot of problems, but no solutions.
I try everthing - put in refrigerator (it worked until i turn off the display, pulled the battery for the night, and one bucket with operations without effect.
i install mymobiler and i was sure that my HD is working without display, then i disassemble the phone and checked the connectors, but no effect either.
i am radiocommunication and electronic engineer, and i don't give up so easily
i pulled the main board, and blowed the main board with hot air flow solder machine (i blowed exactly all over the shielding, from the bottom side not SIM card side), i wait for cooling then asemble the phone, and voala "Its alive"
NOW I AM IN TESTING PERIOD. I WILL WRITE WHEN I AM SURE THATS WORK FOR ME.
i have no pictures but i will make when i disassemle the phone again, because now is not fully asembled.
cheers!!!!!
p.s. i am sorry for my bad english
p.s. i am so happy trallllalalalalalal
It's not uncommon to see bad phone soldering on HTCs phones. Guess their factory isn't working right. Good job btw.
72 hours later everything looks great, the screen works perfektly, touch too, wireless communication too. i will post after few test again.
p.s. its look like my battery now have better handling....
6 un grande!
Wow!!! It's a good new. I had the same problem and I will try your solution. I hope it works on my phone.
Cheers!
I have problem from another type:
The problem is with signal. It was perfect until one day, the 3G has gone & then start losing the signal some times 3G return poor or strong, I take it to the HTC service center in Saudi Arabiya & the told me you have to change the main board then they do it but the same problem still there.
Now still have the problem even after change the main board, is there anything if have to change it or do it???
Note: it files down from me before this problem happened.

did you try to change the radio???
This could be caused by bad SIM card. Did you try another SIM? In my country it's not unussual for SIM cards to start malfunction out of the blue. Also, check contacts for grease or dust.

Hi, ssory for a stupid question, but what is "solder machine" with hot air flow? Is it idustrial fan? If yes, it can give to great temperature and can damage motherboard.
Was your idea to solder again all solder connections and roads?

the solder machine keep one temps at all around 280 degrees celsioum, i thunk the chips can be demaged with temture about 340 degrees, ofcourse it depends of how long time you will blow over the pcb. i don't resolder all tracks and elements (i have no such technology in my laboratory), i just blowed the shielded part of the mainboard, because i know that i can blow some smd element and they are very tiny.
p.s. i use this JBC AM6850 solder mahine
p.s.2 yes it was my idea - it is better than to do nothing with this PDA and throw it in the cupboard
The solution still work for me...
bueno suerte...
