[IDEA/DEV] OnStar-style crash response

In the US we have a system available in some cars called OnStar. The system, among many other things, is able to detect a crash and automatically contact emergency services. I guess cell phones are cutting into their profit margin because they've started running radio advertisements saying "What if you're in an accident and you can't reach your phone?"
Well that got me thinking... what if you can't reach your phone? And that gave me an idea... we can make a "clone" of OnStar.
Details
Many of our phones have G-Sensors. There is already an app out there to measure acceleration and G-Force.
We can create an app that you run in the car (perhaps hooked up with a car kit, windshield mount, etc). The app monitors acceleration/deceleration and G-Forces. When it detects a crash (instant deceleration and/or huge spike in G-Force), it plays a loud warning tone and displays a large "Cancel" button. If the cancel button is not pressed within a certain time period (15, 20, 30 seconds), it automatically calls 911 (or equivalent emergency number) and turns on speakerphone.
I can start the development of this myself, but certain things (e.g. the deceleration/G-Force measurement) I will need help with.
Before I start development I would like to gauge how much interest there would be in something like this.

I can contribuite with the development if you need some help, but for the mathematics I suggest to contact some developer who already worked with such stuffs.

The idea is good, but should be activated by user (i know, if he forgets...) : Imagine the problem if the device in in a suitcase or attache case, and the bag fall down (or is striked... )... The emergencies will be called just for a falling of bag... and the cancel button won't be seen...
I think this should be enabled (maybe by a profiler like G-profile or SBSH PhoneWeaver ???)

Surely a nice Idea.
To prevent false alarms a few other things could be taken into account, like sound level - If there is a sudden increase in sound level (crash whatever) or if it detected a "crash" it requires you shouting / using some voice command like features or whatever.

This is an phenomenal idea! Please do it. You guys could actually save lives with something like this. How many software ideas can actually save your life. Not sure if Onstar does this, but maybe have feature where, after it calls emergency assistance, it then calls your emergency contacts with message stating you have been in an accident and gives them your location if you have GPS enabled device.

I test it, but its not that what i´m looking for. it have to be preciselier. or maybe with same card where i can see the piont.

i would recommend using Garmin. you can save any point to the gps program (much like any GPS) but with Garmin, as you are just browsing the map, it will show you all the points when you are approaching without having to 'route' to it. it's perfect if you have many fishing spots on the lake and simply want to jump from one spot to another (again, without having to have the program 'route' to it).

I haven't tried that one myself (it has problems conecting to some in-built GPSs accordingto the comments and I can confirm this with my X1), but it looks pretty good and is still in dev.

a lot more features than you need, buy being able to store waypoints and showing them on live plots could be useful. I thoroughly recommend this app and have been using it for a couple of years now.

Update:
Latest version of 'Where Is' seems to work fine with the X1.
It's got a really nice simple interface and, if its granularity is enough, it should do exactly what you want.
Where Is will show a warning that it can't connect to the GPS until it acquires a lock - tap the icon that looks like a notepad to view the raw GPS log and if you see data then it's seeing your GPS fine and will lock as soon as it has enough sats.
I originally thought the GPS needed to be switched to 'unmanaged' by unchecking the box in the WinMo External GPS settings, but this seems to be a red herring. Maybe a soft restart of the device was what got it working, or maybe the message about not being able to connect to the GPS was just misleading.

Is anybody's working to satisfactory? Or am I the only one?
I never really used GPS till I got this device and only from the complaining here had it really got me interested . Although I use GPS maybe 3 times a year, I've made it a point to use it every drive I take to see if its still working.
I always get a lock within 5 seconds to at most a min. Stationary or moving don't matter. I've never had my phone say location not available.
My phone always sees 11 or more and only locks on to 3 or 4 once it locked 7...
When I hit navigate to then a destination it instantly finds me and routes me. While driving it every now and again has a blue circle but that's usually during lots of overpasses turns on freeways and etc. For the most part it has no circle ...
I will admit every now and again it'll lose route and not reroute so I back out and hit navigate again and back to navigating.
Its even found me in portland Oregon in the city.
So my question is, although GPS could be better I.e. faster lock, more birds to lock on and tracking while moving, it still has served its purpose and found me my way a few times when I'm lost.
On the way home I will use it again and it will find me almost instantly and navigate me all the way home...
Am I lucky? Or do others work good enough to get around, yes could be better, but is yours good enough like mine to where even if they don't fix it, its not that big of a deal cause for the most part for me it works?
Another thing is I'm beggining to think its hardware and software. Reason is messing with the settings does improve or have different results, but on the other hand the gps fixes seem to give everyone different results and why would Samsung release them all with poor GPS just to supposedly fix it in a few weeks/ wouldn't it have been easier to fix then ship em out?
Who knows, no one is for sure, but I just want to know who's is atleast satisfactory like mine? Maybe I just don't have high GPS standards cause I don't use it to get 1 meter off. If I'm atleast 50 meters away I think my eyes and brain can help me find the other 50 meters.
So are you satisfied even though it needs improvements? I am. I don't think it needs fixed, but as Samsung says "optimized".

Mine isn't as terrible as some people say on here, but there are definitely problems. Latitude, for instance, often falls back to network location even with a clear view of the sky. Driving, it will randomly drift far enough that the GPS goes to rerouting mode, trying to bring me back on course. And there are times that it just refuses to get a lock for 10-15 minutes, though luckily that doesn't happen too often. Definitely worst GPS performance than my G1.
But, all that being said.. Not so bad that I'm really stressing about it. I'll give Samsung/TMO a few more weeks for an update and hopefully they patch up the issues with Froyo. If not, or if the update gets delayed, I'll start tinkering with the fixes from the forums.

mine works fine too. quick to lock, navigation works perfectly. i was locking on 3-4 satellites last time i tried.
it's not very good indoors, and often has trouble determining location, but outdoors it has been completely satisfactory.
this is all with gps on, and use wireless networks off, btw. completely stock, and the compass works fine too.

I'm the same, I don't use GPS that much, but when I do it works fairly well. Its not the best I've used but it gets the job done. Only once when I was driving on the freeway could it not lock on.
I remember reading that a GPS fix leaked for the Captivate and it seemed to fix the issue. And the new SGS phones coming out for Verizon and Sprint seem to have better luck with GPS.

For me too GPS locks 95% times. However Navigation is the only application that crashes my phone once in a while....and I dont like that

Mine seems OK, with the light use I've given it. Haven't tested it out with route-tracing software like some have -- but for just getting an accurate lock, it seems on par with other phones I've used. (Maybe a little slower to lock.)

I had tested my GF's Samsung Moment alongside my Vibrant many times and the Moment hooks to GPS quickly and consistently. I cannot think how Samsung could implement an inferior GPS in their flagship phone!

My gps works flawlessly, when I read all these threads its hard to remaster because everyone I use gps it takes a matter of seconds to lock in and route me to my destination. Even in my area of living which is outside of the city it is very vet close to where I actually am and even right on. I would be frustrated if it didn't work as I do use my gps every so often but it is precise in my experience and I'm very happy with the final product.

I now have two GPS's in two of our cars. The primary reason for buying a GPS a while back was so I could meet up with guys that I often 4wheel with in various locations. I would get lost when somebody told me to meet them in a city that I didn't know very well. My wife saw how handy my GPS was and took it. I finally got a G1 and it was used as a backup in case the wife wouldn't let me use "My GPS".
Anyways fast forward a year or so. We bought a second GPS for her car. Why because she got the new one of course.
Now that I have 2 GPS's in my cars my phone has been well a secondary or I should say hardly ever used. However when I'm on foot and I get backwards its always been nice to know I could fire up my GPS and find my way somewhere. Lord knows I've been lost a few times in down town Seattle. Wandering around and firing up maps and then using the by foot option has saved me many times. Sure it didn't have to be accurate since all I needed to know was do I walk 3 blocks north then 1 to the west or is it 3 blocks to the west then 1 block to the north?
The Vibrant GPS works when I need it, but honestly I really wish it was a bit more like the G1. Its nearly useless when I use CardioTrainer and a few more apps.

I have had my Vibrant for about 45 days and the GPS has been awful since day one. I have tried some of the fixes which did help a little bit but I still have problems. The GPS cuts on and off so much that Cardio Trainer is pretty much useless most of the time. It has started to freeze on me while attempting to use Cardio Trainer today, which necessitated pulling the battery. The GPS normally shows me about 2 of 3 miles from where I actually am. The compass is just about totally useless. This is a wonderful phone and would be a fantastic phone if the compass and GPS just worked normally. I am starting to be concerned with the phone starting to freeze up as it has not done that in the past.

Mine worked great for a few weeks. Even though it wouldn't lock more than 3 or 4 satellites the performance was completely satisfactory. Then it got a little quirky with accuracy and my position started jumping around a lot. Then it started positioning me miles from where I actually was sometimes, causing Maps to lock up, causing the entire phone to lock up, and generally being unreliable.
Over the past week or so I've had to reboot the phone half the time I try to use the GPS in order to get it to work. I can usually get it to work at a satisfactory level eventually, but it's far from painless. I haven't tried any of the "fixes"...my GPS settings are stock.

On my first phone the GPS and phone in general was a disaster.
Once returned, my second phone is "ok" for driving assistance use, it takes awhile for a lock but it works. But I otherwise leave GPS turned off or else my phone will randomly shut down/reboot.
With trepidation I applied a no lag fix and it has turned my opinion of the phone from "meh" to wow (even though I was not even sure I had a lag problem, but little did I know).
So if GPS gets fixed and 2.2 deployed, and assuming 2.2 solves lag or a no-lag fix is implemented for 2.2, then I will be very happy. But it sure seems like a bit of grief to get to that point. Anything goes wrong down that path, and I'll focus on HTC or other devices... cause for similar past issues with hardware I never buy HP

Add a compass fix to that list and I'm there with ya.

After applying the gps fix I haven't had a problem since. I use the gps daily and have only had 1 restart. Had my vibrant since day 1. Maybe I just got lucky.

I completely understand the need to get the GPS fixed, but I have to honestly ask...why do so many people seem so worried about the compass?
Are there that many of you out there that wander around using the compass all the time ? Is it because of apps like Layar ?
Using a smartphone as a compass/gps on a hike is useless if you plan to be out more than a few hours so that can't be it.
Is it just the principle of the thing ... that they provide the feature so it should work properly out of the box?
I'm not trying to be a wise ass here...I'm honestly curious.

In a word: yes.
While I don't use Layar much, it would be great if it worked. I've tried to use Google Skymaps several times and gave up due to the compass completely freaking out when I hold the phone up to, you know, look at the sky. It's nice the have a working compass for Google Maps...even if it's just for street view. Yelp taunts me with directional functionality that doesn't work, and I could go on. In general I'd like to know that apps that use the magnetometer to detect orientation (and who knows what will come along that will use that functionality) will work. I don't think that's too much to ask.
Now, I also do a lot of city navigation on foot, and having a compass to figure out which way to walk when I come up from a subway on my way to a meeting is a huge help. Seriously. At that point I don't have a GPS because I've been underground.
I've used Android devices (like the G1) that are old-ish, and I've used Android devices that are not considered high-end devices with working compasses, so yeah, on principle I expect my high-end $500 device to work at least as well as they do. that sucks dude. i just noticed what you were saying about google sky map, mine was tripping out for a little while but then it finally settled down. can't really tell if it's pointing in the accurate direction because it's daylight
my compass has worked just fine on maps though. it always points me in the right direction, and even the compass on the "gps status" app is correct, birds locked on or not

If I hold the phone "just right" I can usually get the compass to work ok in things like Maps where accuracy isn't terribly important. It's still painfully slow compared to other Android devices I've used, though. Most I've seen have nearly instantaneous compass updates when you turn...on my Vibrant (both of them) I have to wait a while for it to settle down before I can tell how it's reading. When I hold it in an odd position...like you do for Skymaps...it's all over the place. Sometimes it works, but it's hard to tell unless you're manually keeping track of which way is North, which kinda defeats the purpose, eh?

[Q] Disabling Bluetooth AD2P Audio Autoplay

Hey everyone. So I find I have an annoying issue that is kind of pissing me off. I guess a majority of car makers have this wonderful "feature" that sends a "play" signal to the phone while connecting. This would be nice IF I could pick the app it would play with but the epic and other phones like to pick the defauly music player.
The downside is that I tend to stream pandora or slacker while on the road so each morning I get 2 songs playing at once lol.... rather annoying. I then need to load the music player and stop it. There are some good parts to what the cars do....like if an incoming call is answered it pauses the active player (usually slacker for me) while on the call.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to change any of this behavior? I guess that would have to be a kernel change or possibly a bluetooth apk if there is one? I would love to try to find a way to leave the pause portion there for calls but maybe like a check if there is a active player on top then play or pause is OK, but if in background, dont do anything.
I have searched a lot on this and it seems to be a common issue. But I just wanted to see if anyone has any ideas. I tried the app "autostarts" but it complains about not having root access even though the phone is rooted so that isnt an option it seems. It's probably wishful thinking, but was hoping maybe someone has an idea.
Or is there something I could use to kill Music Player for example "if" it was auto started and not run by me directly?

I suppose you could use a task killer and set it to kill the music player whenever it starts up. You could always disable it when your not using it. I wouldn't use it for anything else besides the music player that you wish to kill.

The problem I see with that is with most task killers they use a timer... unless I am missing one that will kill it automatically when it opens? The downside to that is if I use another app to monitor that app I have a feeling I am going to kill my battery life if it constantly monitoring.

You may be able to do this using tasker. It's not free (five bucks) and it's a bit complicated, but there is a week's trial on the developer's website.
I'm not allowed to post links, but just google tasker for android. The version in the market doesn't have the trial, though.The one on the developer's website is a buck cheaper and offers a trial.
If you aren't familiar with it, you can basically use it to take any input the phone uses (phone, sms, location data, gesture, bluetooth data, whatever) and make it output any event, so you could have it give a media all stop command every time you connect it to bluetooth. You could even have it automatically bring up a little menu with pandora, music player, last FM.. whatever media players you use.. after that. You could probably even get it to perform different behaviors depending on which bluetooth radio you connected to (so you could have it do something different in your car than in your friend's car for instance).
It's really a lifesaver of a program, well worth the five bucks I dropped on it, it's replace multiple other apps in my life. Not trying to sound too much like a commercial, but I have every reason to think it would do what you want. It is a bit complicated until you get the hang of it, though.

+1... was just about to say, Tasker can do it. Tasker has been the best $5 I've spent in a loonnnng time.
I got tired of getting up in the morning for my 1.5 hour morning commute (gotta drop the kid off to daycare in another county) and getting to work late because it had been rainy and terrible. Setting the alarm crazy early just to check and see if the weather was any good was not a pleasant prospect, and with winter on the way, I needed a solution.
So I spent an evening with Tasker. I had it perform an HTTP GET at Accuweather.com after passing my zip code to the website. I then had it search the returned text for words such as "rain", "snow" and storm". It runs this search at about 5:00 AM, and dependent upon the result, sets an alarm (with a snooze function that I programmed in). After the initial alarm, since I knew I'd be too tired to pay much attention to WHY it had woken me up early, I have it speak out loud "Good morning, you have been woken early today because it is [X weather] and [X degrees, after performing a Celcius to Farenheit conversion]. It is currently [time].
I plan on posting the Tasker profile to my blog in a couple days after I'm sure it contains no bugs (it'll probably snow in the morning so I'll be able to test that scenario).
Anyhow, this just gives a taste of what Tasker can do. I have it launch a list of apps when I plug into the headset jack, silence my phone if I get within 300 meters of work, or sound an alarm, vibrate, flash an LED, take pictures, and redirect outgoing calls to my girlfriend's phone if I send it a certain text message, to name a few very useful profiles I've got set up.
Tasker does everything without forcing you to learn any syntax or do any coding at all. It would be a matter of minutes to set up a scenario where, if you connect via Bluetooth, it waits a moment and terminates the default video player application and then launches the other application you want to use. One of the profiles I've forgotten to mention is one that, when I launch Navigation with the GPS off, closes Navigation, enables GPS, and loads Navigation back up. When I'm in the car I just want to touch Navigation, not screw with GPS settings.
Anyhow, enough of my gushing about Tasker. Seriously, best $5 app you'll ever buy. Trust me.

That might be pretty nice... wonder if it can tell the difference between a bluetooth headset and AD2P. I'll have to try it. Wonder if it could start my car with its application too like 30 min after my alarm hehe.

I've been playing with Tasker and it will do what I need Thanks! I ended up setting up a profile that when it connects to my vehicle only, it will kill music player, wait 3 seconds and then kill it again... it took that due to the fact the car doesnt send the play signal for a few seconds.

Simple remote tracking, mass management, etc.

When it comes to tracking, of course there's Cerberus. Total win for tracking your device, getting a picture, even video, current location, sending them messages, locking or wiping the device, etc. That's all well and good, but what if your Nexus 7 was part of the student batch stolen from work, and your job is within a school district? Suddenly the awesome picture/video taking functionality turns into a very massive concern.
What I'm curious about is whether or not there's an app that will show GPS location *only* of your device. No pictures, video, or anything fancy. Remote wipe/permanent lock would be pretty awesome as well. Does anything like this exist?
Also, how difficult would it be to write something like this? Doing our own in-house apps wouldn't be a bad idea at all, but I'm not even sure where to get started on a project like this. If tinkering with GPS tracking and whatnot could absorb a substantial amount of man-power and time, it may not be an optimal route.
About the mass management piece, I'm curious if anybody has any suggestions about controlling, say, 50 of these units. By control I mean disallow applications to be installed unless there's an admin override and prevent existing applications from being removed. Either that, or perhaps some sort of "deep freeze" functionality that continually resets the devices back to a clean slate.
Any/all suggestions are welcome!

How, exactly? Everything I'm reading about this is saying you have to text phone your the GPS word and it'll find it. My Nexus 7 is not a phone. How would I do this?

I tried out real time tracking... An app I used quite a while ago. It looked like it could work, but I'm curious if anybody knows if, from the Web interface, you can call on the unit to turn on the GPS remotely. This way if they're connected to their wifi we can at least get a feed for what's up... But of course without remote start, we got nothing. Any idea?
